Guest Editor Bruce Pittman This month our Guest Editor is Bruce Pittman. Bruce was instrumental in helping us develop this month’s cover story and supporting features. If you’ve ever attended a lavish wedding, soiree or gala around town, you’ve probably seen Bruce’s work. Here, in his own words, Bruce explains how he became Nashville’s Event Planner Extraordinaire. -Ed Atlas

rom the time I was a kid, I have been fascinated with the process of planning events. Student Council was my "golden ticket" while growing up at Goodpasture Christian School. They NYK + Cali Wedding were the school’s "movers and shakers" and the ones who planned Photographers and executed campus events. A perfect fit for this guy! This passion, coupled with living in a home that cooked, baked and entertained as a family, led to an early career in catering that started "illegally" in my Lipscomb University dorm room. Wedding planners were around 18 years ago, but many couples utilized their florist or caterer to get them down the aisle. Soon, in addition to catering weddings, I began planning them. I enjoy planning weddings for several reasons. First and foremost, there is nothing like being part of one of the most memorable occasions for a couple. It's rare that I don't tear-up during a ceremony or while a heartfelt toast is made. And, there's nothing better than seeing couples faces when shown the reception prior to guest entry. Second, there are those weddings that come to you with special circumstances. Once, a father of the bride was terminally ill, and we all were just hoping he would be able to see his daughter walk down the aisle. And, there was the time I planned a wedding with a couple in which the bride shared with me that she was terminally ill. I feel these weddings take place with such different meaning. These wedding memories will always be part of my life. And I am always honored to be part of weddings within the LGBT community. The meaning of these weddings can be vastly different for these couples. Some have been life partners for years, never dreaming they would have the opportunity to marry. Other couples couples meet, date, become engaged and are married. It’s a traditional process for most, but still new to their community. I hope this issue serves you as a valued resource if you or someone you know is planning a wedding. “Thank you” to Lifestyle Publications for creating this special issue, and to the many partners that contributed to the included content. CITY ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO REGISTER WITH EVERBRIDGE EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM The recent wildfires in Gatlinburg have communities throughout Tennessee evaluating their emergency communications systems and protocols. Brentwood and Williamson County are prepared and have been partners on emergency notifications for many years. Since

Alert Emergency Notification System known as Everbridge. This system alerts residents throughout Brentwood and Williamson County in the event of natural disasters, chemical spills, wildfires, school lockdowns, and train derailments. Residents must sign up for the service in order to receive the alerts. However, to date only a small percentage the city’s 40,000 residents have registered. Everbridge has the ability to mass-notify the community via landline, cell phone, or simply any device that has a phone number. Residents are also able to create an account and register alerts for multiple locations like a child’s school or a spouse’s workplace. They can also choose to be notified via email or text messages. Itâ€™s no wonder that so many brides-to-be put so much time and consideration into choosing the perfect gown. Whether the design is traditional, contemporary or something unusual, sometimes the greatest challenge could be knowing where to begin. With that in mind, recently we visited The Barn at Sycamore Farms for a firsthand look at some of the stunning gowns created by Nashville designer Karen Hendrix. BROOKE GOWN Brooke is a dramatic mermaid silhouette of champagne Silk Charmeuse with an overlay of delicate Ivory Chantilly lace. The elongated bodice front has a squared sweetheart neckline supported by delicate silk straps with an open back to the waist. Handmade covered matching buttons of silk charmeuse and Chantilly lace trail down the back of the elongated bodice followed by a generous Chantilly lace train edged with a beautiful Chantilly lace trim. The color was chosen as one that compliments every complexion.

“Planning a wedding is a full time job, which most couples already have.”

No truer words could sum up why wedding and event planner Bruce Pittman is such a highly recognized and valued resource for couples planning a wedding in Nashville. He adds, “Teamed with their current jobs and life's obligations, most couples come to me with a heightened level of stress. At times, it may just be about venue selection or their budget. But many times wedding stress can run deeper.” Pittman says he notices sometimes stress can be brought on by other family members. “I always tell couples to loop me into any conversation and situation if a family member may be overwhelming them with opinions, or if communication is difficult due to a specific family dynamic." He adds that it can be helpful to introduce a neutral, unbiased person to serve as a mediator. In other situations, one or both individuals may become uneasy with a third party planning their wedding. “For those who 20

find it hard to [delegate] planning to someone else, I typically tell the person or couple to think of me as an executor," he says. "And for those who simply don't care for planning in general, relief is seen on their faces at the end of our initial meeting.” Pittman stresses that choosing licensed, insured, professional wedding partners is vital to the success of a couple's wedding. “‘Favors’ can flop, ‘friendships’ can become acquaintances and ‘great deals’ can turn into ‘worst nightmares.’ Creating your ‘A Team’ of wedding partners sets up a couple for peace of mind and a positive wedding experience."

First: Establish the Wedding Budget Creating a wedding budget is a top priority, since it serves as a guideline during the planning process. “I create the initial wedding budget which includes an estimated dollar amount for each category venue, catering, bar, wedding cake, etc. - based on the couple's estimated guest count,” says Pittman. “Each category includes potential wedding partners we will meet with and adding their quote amount for review and final selection. “Interestingly enough, most couples who contact me have already selected a venue or are in the process of making the selection. But sometimes the couple is either stressed from the experience or confused in the middle of the selection process.”

He explains that some couples lean toward a classic/ traditional venue such as Cheekwood Botanical Gardens. Other couples enjoy the more southern, relaxed feel of The Cordelle and some fall in love with a picturesque plantation or farm such as The Barn at Sycamore Farm or Carnton Plantation. “With any venue of interest, it is vital to know what is included in the rental fee, if the venue is open to the couple working with their vendors, and if the couple can provide their own alcohol,” says Pittman. “Obviously, the more that’s included in the rental fee, the better for the budget. And, anytime a couple is allowed to provide their own alcohol for a wedding, many dollars will be saved.”

Choosing the Best Hotel for Guests Pittman says when it comes to selecting a hotel for wedding guests, he looks at two things. “I break down hotel room block quotes by the area(s) in Nashville the couple wants their guest to say, and into blocks requiring attrition versus blocks that are complimentary.” He explains that attrition means the couple is responsible for filling a set percentage of the rooms each night contracted, or they must pay the difference to meet the required percentage. “I am an advocate for couples contracting mostly complimentary room blocks, which means they do not have any financial responsibility unless the block is cancelled entirely,” Pittman notes. “After gathering information, I review options with the couple to assist them in selecting the best option(s) for their guests.”

Social media is at our fingertips, and because of this, each couple I meet is now fairly, if not very, savvy about what they want and what resources are available to them. I tell each couple that they are the CEO of their own wedding and I am really in the role to ‘catch’ what they tell me, ‘review’ to ensure it makes sense logistically and ‘present’ scenarios and options for them to evaluate and approve to ensure they are set up for success.” 22

f you’ve lived or worked in Middle Tennessee for any length of time, you probably have some sort of relationship with Southern Trophy House. For decades, the family-owned company has been a fixture in the awards and personalization business. So if your child’s little league team won a championship, or your spouse received an award at work, chances are, the trophy, plaque or crystal award was designed and assembled locally within the four walls of the modest storefront at 2705 Nolensville Pike, Southern Trophy’s home since the business was founded in 1960. And the local connection is something the folks at Southern Trophy take seriously, as they have a long, rich history with the community. Brentwood resident, Sue Brown and her late husband, Vic Brown, purchased the company in 1990 from former Vanderbilt football coach, Bill Pace. At that time, the traditional trophy company dealt mostly in trophies and plaques. Over the years, many things about the company have changed. Sue Brown still owns Southern Trophy House (STH), but Sue’s son-in-law, Wilson Brim, manages the daily company operations, keeping it in the family. In addition to personnel changes, the business model has changed as well. STH has gone hi-tech with digital mockups and custom fabrications while 75 percent of their business is in Middle Tennessee. Wilson Brim, STH’s vice president, says, “On any given day, a customer could need crystal, gift bags or embroidered shirts. And our people know how to work within a budget. We can come up with something appropriate for whatever their need might be and deliver it on time.” Sales Manager, Daryle Jones who has been with STH for 20+ years says, “The emphasis on color printing is one of the biggest changes in our business.” Brim adds

that technology has been a rapidly changing factor in their business, as well. “In the past, a customer would mail their art work, therefore we had to allow time for transit. Technology has greatly reduced the production curve. Accuracy, timeliness, along with customer loyalty, are keys to success in the awards and personalization business.” STH’s reach extends far beyond its customers. Brim says, “You need to be a good corporate citizen and it’s something our employees do very well. Everyone wants to help their community.” Brim’s son, Will, was born with Down syndrome in 1999. “His birth really changed everybody in our family. It awakened us to what’s really important.” Will’s birth also inspired his family to become more actively involved with non-profits. Brim’s wife, Kathy, a speech pathologist at St. Thomas Midtown, is a former Down Syndrome Association of Middle Tennessee and Saddle Up! board member. Brim himself is a past Board Chair of Special Olympics Tennessee and his father-in-law served for many years on the board of what is now High Hopes Development Center, a Franklin preschool. And as would be expected, STH is proud of the various work it performs for middle Tennessee’s non-profit and disability community. “None of us chose this path, but everyone in our family has risen to the occasion to make sure our son succeeds.” Brim continues, “Something that is unique about Nashville is that it is the center for city, county and state government. That means numerous non-profit organizations are based here and those entities consistently recognize their donors and contributors. We receive a tremendous amount of work from the non-profit community and we reciprocate. We strive to be good corporate citizens.” More than a half century in the same building. Locally and family owned with an unwavering commitment to both their customers and their civic duties. Like a championship trophy, Southern Trophy House is a shining example of what makes this community a great place to live.

ike so many others, family is the epicenter of Dr. Dennis Wells' life. But when parents lose a child, and siblings their oldest brother, that epicenter is challenged in ways few can comprehend. That's where Wells and his family found themselves in 2005, when their oldest son and big brother, Dustin Jack Wells, died in a car accident. There was never a doubt that the family - including wife Doris and sons Landon (now 13) and Luke (now 12) - would go on. The question was "how?" For that answer, Wells, a prominent Brentwood aesthetic dentist for 35 years, turned to song. Dustin was a music major at Belmont University and the family found that to cope with their grief they would help others discover the joy that Dustin found in music. The result was The Dustin J. Wells Foundation and a partnership with Nashville's W.O. Smith Music School. This enduring relationship is keeping his son’s memory and honor alive by giving back to less fortunate music students through the Foundation's signature event, the annual The Gift of Music concert. “Some of my close friends were diligently searching for ways to help me cope with my loss," says Wells. "And generous people responded with acts of kindness, including over $50,000 in donations toward a fund set up in Dustin’s memory.” Another organization instrumental in the formation of The Dustin J. Wells Foundation and W.O. Smith Music School partnership was

the Crown Council, specifically his good friends and council members Greg and Steve Anderson. The Crown Council is a prestigious national alliance of leading-edge dentists who are strongly committed to promoting oral health, fighting oral cancer, and serving their communities through charitable work. Dr. Wells has been a member of the invitation-only Crown Council for many years. "The Crown Council’s annual meeting was scheduled to be in Nashville within a year of Dustin’s death," says Dr. Wells. "Calling on some of our dear friends and patients to perform, we filled the Wildhorse Saloon for an emotional night of music and celebration, and the Gift of Music event was born.” He adds that “it was only fitting” that the first audience for the newly established Gift of Music event was the Crown Council. The Council will be returning to Nashville for the tenth annual show on February 2. “This group has been a great source of healing for me," says Wells. "They are a true blessing and their friendship has been a true gift. “Dustin’s memory is being kept alive and this event allows for his life to continue to touch others. It was from the strength and support of this inner circle of caring people that the Dustin J. Wells Foundation was born.
