Building a Life of Intention

We often think of investment in terms of dollars and cents. But long before it becomes financial, investment is a decision, a choice to care enough about something today that we’re willing to give to it with the belief that it will matter tomorrow.

Every day, we’re investing. In the conversations we have. In the habits we build. In the people we show up for. When we choose to shop locally, attend a school event, or lend our expertise to a neighborhood organization, we’re helping shape the character and resilience of our community.

In this issue, we explore the many forms investment can take: from creating home sanctuaries for local flora and fauna, to finding new ways to care for ourselves and our health. Each story is a reminder that progress rarely happens by accident; it happens through intention.

As you move through this month, we invite you to reflect on where your time, energy, and attention are going. What are you building? Who are you lifting up? What future are you quietly shaping?

Here’s to thoughtful choices, steady growth, and the kind of returns that truly matter.

Happy April!

FOR BEES AND BEING

NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR A BOZEMAN MASTERPIECE

NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR A BOZEMAN MASTERPIECE

In the rugged beauty of the Gallatin Valley, landscape design often focuses on the “grand”—sweeping vistas and towering stone features. However,  Blanchford Landscape Group has recently captured the industry’s highest honors by focusing on the “micro.” Their “Pollinator Labyrinth” project has secured a  National 2nd Place NALP Award and a  1st Place Montana MNLA Award, proving that ecological stewardship and high-end design are not just compatible; they are inseparable.

"We didn't just plant a garden; we curated an experience where the architecture of the earth serves the delicate needs of Montana's native pollinators."

This isn’t just a garden; it is a functional ecosystem designed with the precision of an art gallery. By blending structural integrity with a deep respect for Montana’s native flora, Blanchford has created a space where the wild meets the refined.

THE VISION: BEYOND THE BLOOM

The “Pollinator Labyrinth” was born from a desire to solve two problems at once: how to provide a sanctuary for declining bee and butterfly populations, and how to create a meditative retreat for the homeowner. The result is a spiraling path of discovery.

Unlike traditional gardens that prioritize static beauty, this project was designed for  movement . As you walk the winding path, the sensory experience shifts—from the scent of crushed wild mint to the rhythmic humming of busy pollinators. It is a masterclass in “living architecture.”

ENGINEERING THE ECOSYSTEM

Winning a national award from the  National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) requires more than just a green thumb; it requires technical excellence. The Bozeman climate is notoriously

fickle, demanding a palette of plants that are as resilient as they are beautiful. Blanchfords team utilized a sophisticated irrigation strategy and soil conditioning to ensure the labyrinth thrived in high-altitude conditions. The selection includes:

• Native Perennials: Chosen for their varying bloom times to provide food from early spring through the first frost.

• Structural Stonework:  Sourced locally to ground the design in the Montana landscape.

• Biodiversity Anchors: Specific host plants for the Monarch butterfly and local honey bee species.

"Winning top honors at both the state and national levels validates our commitment to creating landscapes that are as ecologically vital as they are breathtaking."

LOCAL EXCELLENCE, NATIONAL IMPACT

While the NALP award signifies excellence on a grand scale, the  1st Place MNLA (Montana Nursery & Landscape Association) award hits closer to home. It recognizes Blanchford’s ability to navigate the specific challenges of the Intermountain West.

The MNLA judges noted the project’s “exceptional use of native species and its seamless integration into the surrounding environment.” It serves as a blueprint for the future of Big Sky landscaping—moving away from thirsty, manicured lawns toward vibrant, selfsustaining habitats.

THE LABYRINTH AS A LEGACY

A garden is never truly “finished”; it is a conversation between the designer and the seasons. The Pollinator Labyrinth is built to age gracefully, with perennials that will thicken and spread, further blurring

the lines between the curated path and the wild meadow beyond.

For Blanchford Landscape Group, these awards are a validation of their “Ecological Elegance” philosophy. They have proven that you don’t have to sacrifice luxury to support the planet. In the heart of Bozeman, they’ve built a place where nature doesn’t just survive—it flourishes.

A FUTURE IN BLOOM

As the Gallatin Valley continues to grow, the importance of projects like the Pollinator Labyrinth cannot be overstated. It stands as a testament to what is possible when a design firm prioritizes the health of the land as much as the aesthetic of the home.

Whether you are seeking a place for quiet reflection or looking to give back to the environment that makes Montana so special, the lesson from Blanchford’s award-winning year is clear: when we design for the smallest creatures, we create the greatest impact.

SURGERY, REIMAGINED

Investing in your health is one of the most important commitments you can make to yourself and your future. True wellness goes beyond a single procedure or appointment; it requires attention to sleep, nutrition, stress, movement, and emotional well-being. When we prioritize whole-person care, we improve outcomes, recovery, and long-term vitality. After all, your health is your foundation and if it suffers, your other investments will too.

WHAT LED YOU TO START THE CENTER FOR HOLISTIC SURGERY?

During Covid, I began learning about functional medicine and wellness. There was a day when I was going to get a massage and walked by numerous wellness practitioner offices in that same office and it hit me that I was not providing the best care for my patients who undergo an enormous amount of emotional and physical stress during surgery. It dawned on me that my patients were struggling with sleep, stress, optimizing, nutrition, and an affected micro biome, all of which should be optimized. To do this right and give holistic care to each patient, I opened the Center for Holistic Surgery.

At the Center for Holistic Surgery, healing goes beyond procedures to support the whole person
ARTICLE

WHY IS A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO SURGERY SO IMPORTANT?

Surgery is stressful to the patient in a way that most of medicine (and life for that matter) is not. Caring for the whole person empowers the patient to take control where normally they have none all while reducing risks and optimizing outcomes.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE TO HELP PATIENTS THROUGH THEIR SURGERY EXPERIENCE? WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THEM?

I offer a highly personalized approach to improving sleep, stress, nutrition, diet, and the microbiome, all of which are affected by surgical disease or injury and use my expertise in surgery to prepare them specifically for what I know they’ll be going through. This includes taking measures to counteract the anesthesia, positioning during surgery, surgical tools used, even down to how they’re strapped or taped to the table. Some operations induce the same stress response as a high-speed motor vehicle crash, and this approach gives the patients the best way to navigate that journey. Most health improvements done before surgery, called prehab, focus on exercise and improving blood pressure and diabetes. My approach takes into account the whole being.

HOW CAN PEOPLE LEARN MORE AND SEE IF THEY’RE A GOOD FIT TO WORK WITH YOU?

I offer a free phone consultation to get to know the patient, have them learn about my work, and then we discuss if I could benefit them. Anyone can check out my website and blogs to learn more. We all need a hand when going through stressful times, and no one should feel alone going into the operating room.

INDOOR PLANT GUIDE

Investing in indoor plants can not only spruce up your living space, but also bring numerous health and well-being benefits

Bringing the outdoors in with the use of house plants is a great way to add color and dimension to your space. We sat down with Jesse Nelson at Family Tree Nursery, based in Kansas, and discussed the benefits of incorporating plant life into your home.“There are plenty of studies on the health benefits of plants, and the evidence suggests that being around plants and caring for plant life increases overall wellness,” explains Nelson. “Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of  purifying the air.” There are a wide variety of indoor plants that work for any space and light situation that you may have. Regardless if you have a green thumb or a black thumb, there are plant varieties that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants to incorporate into your home.

SNAKE PLANT:

This plant goes by many names such as Snake Plant and Mother-in-Law’s Tongue and is one of the most popular indoor plants. The Snake Plant is for anyone from a green thumb to a black thumb because anyone can grow it. These hardy plants can adapt to any environment and can live in both high light and low light. Snake Plants are great for countertops and tabletops because they grow tall, not

wide. They are great bedside plants because they help purify the air as they go through photosynthesis at night. They only need to be watered about once a month. These plants can also be outdoor plants and can acclimate during the summer months. Be sure to spray the plants three to five times before bringing them back indoors to get rid of any bugs that could have made the plant their home.

ANTHURIUM:

Anthurium has gorgeous, colorful flowers and is the easiest indoor flowering plant to care for. It comes in a variety of colors including red, white, orange and purple. Anthurium likes to be dry, so let it go bone dry before watering. Fertilize every so often, especially when blooming. These plants do not like direct sunlight and can be repotted every three to five years.

HOPE PEPEROMIA:

This cascading plant is gaining popularity due to its succulent-like leaves and also because it is fairly easy to care for. The Hope Peperomia likes medium to bright direct sunlight. It does well as a tabletop plant or a hanging plant. Watering is only needed one time a month regardless of plant size.

“Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of  purifying the air.”

DRACAENA JANET-CRAIG COMPACTA:

This is a slow-growing variety that is architectural and compact. This plant is a great statement piece and looks great in an entryway or by a chair. There are a lot of varieties and colors of the Dracaena. They are very resilient in low light and are great for an office space with little or no light. They like to stay on the dry side, so they like to be watered when they are about ½ to ¾ of the way dry. When watering, give it a good soak. Protip: A moisture meter can be purchased and used to determine how dry your plant is to help determine when it is time to water again.

ZZ PLANT:

The ZZ plant, which its formal name is Zamioculas Zamiifolia, is a very easy plant to care for. They like anything from low light to bright light. These plants are hard to kill and can go a long time without being watered. Their bulbs hold a lot of moisture, so they only

need to be watered once a month. This is a great plant to give as a gift due to its ease of care and versatility. They are slow-growing and are great for counters and tabletops. There are new varieties coming out such as Lucky which has round leaves and Raven which is black.

CALATHEA ORNATA:

The Calathea Ornata has a ton of varieties and is a very artistic plant. This one is a little finicky and temperamental, so it can take a little bit of a green thumb to care for them. Faucet water can be hard on these plants, so they prefer distilled water. If brown tips appear, this means it is being over-watered or the water is hard.  They like medium to bright indirect light. They can grow to 1 ½ feet to 2 feet maximum.

FICUS RUBY:

The Ficus Ruby is in the Rubber Tree family and can come in a variety of colors. These plants like either direct light or bright indirect light. These can grow three to four trunks in a pot and can take on the appearance of a bush. They grow six to eight inches a year. This plant can go dry so watering about once a month is sufficient.

PHILODENDRON LICKETY SPLIT:

This plant comes in many varieties, but the lickety split is known as the most pleasing. They can get to be between four to six feet and grow both tall and wide. These houseplants need lots of space to grow. They like to stay about half dry and can be a little forgiving if they go a little dryer than they like. This plant likes medium to bright light and can acclimate to an outdoor plant during warmer months.

When choosing an indoor plant, call your local professionals or go to a local garden center to get the best information. They will be happy to help you decide what plant works best in your space and with your plant-abilities.
