Spreading Local Love I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another holiday greeting card and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. No matter how you choose to celebrate those you love this season, what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. We hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. We have an amazing community full of wonderful things to explore. All of the fantastic local businesses and new and exciting ways to experience this beautiful place we live in. I've always relished in walking down Main St. and saying “hello” or “good morning” to someone passing, to be greeted with the same kindness and warmth. Despite the fact that I don’t know this person and may never see them again, this kind regard is built into the DNA of Bozeman. It makes us unique and reminds us all that we’re not in this alone, and perpetuating these small kindnesses can make the difference in someone’s day or maybe even their week or month. While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community—but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at Mazevo or Wild Joe’s or snag a bottle of wine from Vino Per Tutti and some cheese from Mavens Market or Primal Market and indulge on a night in with family or friends. While you’re out, strike up a conversation with the barista, sales associate or the person next to you and spread some of that beautiful local love. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. In 1974, a group of dedicated Bozeman teachers and parents set out to form a social group that would not only change the lives of their children with disabilities but also help to progress Bozeman’s community for decades to come. These parents were brought together by their shared concern for their children with disabilities—what would they do after high school graduation? For those living with disabilities, the prospect of life post-high school is a daunting thing, and in Bozeman, there was a lack of support.

Rather than succumbing to their anxieties, Bozeman families rallied together, forming Reach Inc. Fast forward 50 years, and Reach Inc. has brought support and community to Bozeman in ways the families in 1974 could have only dreamed of. Over the years, Reach Inc. has grown from an afterschool group for socialization so much that now, Reach provides jobs, transportation, housing, and endless opportunities to every one of its clients. Reach Inc. is not a school; it is a community that aims to support its clients every step of the way. They emphasize that they are not telling any of their clients what to do—Reach Inc. is in the business of freedom and support, letting anxieties of the future go and focusing on making the most of today. For one, that might look like getting a job at one of their partners, Town Pump; for others, it may look like utilizing their transportation services to grocery shop. As education has progressed, schools have seen a significant influx in “inclusive learning”—allowing all students to learn together, regardless of their learning levels. Students living with disabilities have benefited from this change greatly; now, we as a community need to ensure we are offering this same inclusion not only in the workforce but in all aspects of our lives. Reach Inc. has worked tirelessly to ensure everyone in the Gallatin Valley lives in an inclusive community.

What started as a compassionate effort has blossomed and enriched hundreds of clients’ lives.

Carter’s Boots and Repair has been a part of the Bozeman community for 30 years and to celebrate that anniversary, they will be throwing a party in July which will also include a huge boot giveaway! What’s not to love about free boots? Originally known as Carter’s Cobbler Shop, the business started out on East Main in 1994. “My dad Jeff Carter is the 3rd generation and I am the 4th,” said Garrett Carter. “Dad had formerly worked for Schnee’s but eventually got the machinery himself.” Carters was originally just a repair shop then and the retail was added in 1997. Garrett began working with his dad in 2015 just part-time and continued all through college. He runs many of the repairs and does most of the advertising and all of the digital and social marketing. Jeff still oversees the entire operation and does a majority of the repairs himself, although not as much in their Kenetrek shop. “Repairs can be very simple, like just a rivet or a stitch, or they can be very complex, like a complete rebuild of a CONTINUED >

boot,” Jeff said. “We basically tear an item apart and put it back together. Using all new materials we repair an area that is torn, or dog chewed, or just worn out. I learned the basics from my old boss and taught myself a lot of stuff through the years and then passed that down to Garrett and other employees as needed.” When asked if he has a favorite type of boot, Jeff said, “I really like all kinds, but they can be very different. It all has to be handmade though, I wouldn’t waste my time if they weren’t.” Jeff said he likes work boots like the Nicks, Franks and Whites, hunting boots like Kenetrek and cowboy boots such as Black Jack.

“One aspect is comfort support and functionality, the other is beauty,” he said. “Leather is a beautiful, functional medium to work with so the cowboy boots can be all of those practical things and art, too.” Carter’s can also provide custom boots. “When we order a custom boot, we will measure and fit for the perfect boot, and completely design it with you every step of the way,” Jeff said. “Every single thing that you see on a boot can be designed to your desires or specifications. From the toe and the heel to the color, stitch, height, and scallop, you name it we do it,” he said.

Carter’s strives to take the time to do things right, whether it’s repairing a much loved pair of old boots or getting someone into the perfect pair of new boots they can fall in love with. One thing Garrett is very excited about all of the space in their new location. “We are adding more boots to our store all the time and we can now offer more products that we wanted to carry for years but didn’t have the space for,” he said. In a world of rushing around and disposable fast fashion Carter’s strives to take the time to do things right, whether it’s repairing a much loved pair of old boots or getting someone into the perfect pair of new boots they can fall in love with. “We want to give the best customer service that is possible and develop lasting community relationships,” Jeff said. “It’s what we do.” CONTINUED >

What’s in a voice? If you live in a home where a ballgame and sports announcers are often in the background, the announcer’s voice and temperament can make or break your love of the game. The MSU Bobcats have had a variety of broadcasters over the years, and our university’s basketball teams presently have a fitting local personality speaking for them. Bozeman native, sports announcer, and indisputable character Ian Laird comes from humble beginnings. Now calling games for MSU men’s and women’s basketball on ESPN+, Laird began working in radio at KPRK-AM in Livingston in the late 1990s. He later moved on to California, Oregon, and Nevada before returning to Montana. But his career behind the mic began at a spot that only locals of a certain generation will recognize: the Skate Palace. As the head DJ for the Skate Palace in high school, Laird found an outlet for his gifts of gab and wit. He didn’t necessarily want to get into the family business (his parents opened JV Restaurant Supply & Design in 1976), so he interned at KMMS-FM radio on weekends, monitoring pre-taped shows. Although he didn’t get any airtime himself, the experience solidified his love of radio. He went on to graduate from Brown Institute in Minneapolis, and came back to Bozeman to pursue local radio.

At KPRK-AM Laird had his own show from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., where he played music, Paul Harvey, and local agricultural news. On Saturday nights, he had a slot playing rockand-roll from 9 p.m. to midnight. “It was one of those old stations where you actually shut it down,” Laird remembers. “At midnight I’d turn the power off, and the building would go completely dark and static. And then at 4 a.m., you’d turn it back on – and pray.” Fortuitously, his title was Sports Director and part of the job was calling games for the Rangers, Park High’s football team. This was his introduction to doing play-by-play, and he was hooked. In 1999 he accepted a job at KBOZ-FM as a DJ. “This was when radio was huge; everyone listened to radio,” says Laird. “Back then, if you wanted a song, you had to listen to the radio and wait for it.” But it turned out there was a long trial period first, which Laird spent doing early-morning meter readings, pulling copy, and prep work for the other DJs. He left after seven months. Following an attempt at KXTG-FM in Portland, Laird moved all over the western U.S., pursuing different jobs, but didn’t find anything solid. He returned to Bozeman to try out the family business and was approached to do playby-play for Mtsports.tv while they broadcast the Bozeman High Hawks basketball games.

To this day, Laird calls games for the Hawks, as well as the Gallatin High Raptors, but now he does it for KGVM-FM, a nonprofit radio station in Bozeman. Although not a paying gig, Laird doesn’t care. “I just wanted to get back into it — I love doing it,” he says. Meanwhile, he became the COO of J&V, while raising his children Camden and Taylor with his wife, Kristin. “She’s really been the driving force behind all this,” says Laird of Kristin. “She couldn’t be more supportive, even when I have to take off to a game in Billings or something last-minute.” In November of 2022, MSU’s associate Athletics Director Bethany Cordell contacted Laird about being the announcer for MSU Bobcat basketball for ESPN+. The games are filmed through Montana PBS, but unlike most schools that just pipe in their radio voice, MSU knew about Laird and his flair for entertainment, and it was a perfect fit. Now with something of a cult following, Laird is in his second year of calling for MSU basketball. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid to be the voice of the Bobcats. I’m just their basketball voice on ESPN+, but it’s still awesome to be able to do this, and sometimes be recognized.” Indeed, Laird has followers across social media platforms, fans on message board discussions, and folks such as yours truly who tune in just to listen to him, not to watch basketball. “I was terrible at sports in high school, and that’s why I love talking about them today,” Laird laughs. “It turns out I’m gifted with gab but not athletic ability…I’m the easy listening of play-by-play.”
