Another year of new relationships, and old friends March can bring many different kinds of weather in Montana, but we usually get some sunshine and warm days to help us begin to think about our summer plans. The kids can see summer vacation coming and my middle schoolers refusing to wear the appropriate cold-weather gear will begin to look a little less foolish. In Bozeman there are so many things that summer brings, it would be hard to guess which you might be looking forward to the most. For me, this year, I am looking forward to color. Beautiful colors and long light for photographs. We have had the honor of working with many writers, photographers and business owners in the past years. We hope to meet new talents and visionaries in the years to come! People may be familiar with the Bozeman 3, a nonprofit organization working to assist children fighting cancer in Gallatin County, but now the operation has a brand-new name, and Tobi Kirsch, newest board president, wants to shed some new light on “The Lightwell Foundation.” The original Bozeman 3 rose out of a unique bond, forged between three families as they shared their experiences while fighting for the lives of their children. All of them were far from home, far from their support system, and they met in the hallways of Seattle Children’s Hospital in the Oncology Unit in 2012. “While each one of their children faced a different form of cancer, these kids along with their parents, definitely possessed a resolve to fight,” Tobi said. “They bonded over things like, a mutual love of the Bridger Mountains, or shopping at the same grocery store,” she said. “There were small things like that as well as momentous things…. knowing what it’s like to cradle your child in a small room while waiting for test results and missing entire seasons at home…. they wept together when it seemed cancer was winning and rejoiced together at the many victories.” It was through these shared experiences and a common desire to support other local families facing similar challenges, that the Bozeman 3 finally became a reality in 2014. Now, 8 years of providing support to many more families than the original 3, and recognizing the grown opportunities of the organization, the Bozeman 3 has been renamed Lightwell Foundation and currently has 5 members on the board. “We would like to have 9 so we are in the process of recruiting right now,” Tobi said.

The organization hosts 3 fundraisers each year to raise the necessary funds for providing support to all the families they help and according to Tobi, all three are a “ton of fun” with a different feel surrounding each. The first is a Super Bowl Fun Run which is held the morning of Super Bowl Sunday. The R Bar downtown is utilized as headquarters and is the start and finish line for the 5 K run. The second fundraiser is the “Give Big Gallatin Valley” and the third, held in mid-September, is the “End of Summer Fun Fest” complete with a band, a silent auction, bouncy houses for the kids and lots of fun activities and treats. “They help us to do what we do,” Tobi said. “Lightwell not only offers financial and peer support to Gallatin County families who are battling cancer, we also support pediatric cancer research.” She said there are many things that set Lightwell apart from other non-profits and one of those is the fact that the board is made up strictly of volunteers with each member serving for 3 years. “And, when we give quarterly to our families, they get to decide themselves where they need the money the most,” Tobi said. “We do not dictate how they use the funds or ask for proof of any financial information from the families.” If anyone is interested in getting involved with the Lightwell Foundation, whether it’s joining the board, making a donation or just volunteering at one of the events, they can go to the website at https://www. thebozeman3.org and email the foundation directly with their contact information. “You can also find us on Facebook and Instagram where we always have updates,” Tobi said. “We love our community and all the support they have always offered and hope to get even more people involved.” CONTINUED >

Where do you go for steak in Bozeman? There are many options, and rightly so. This is cattle country, and our fair city used to be quite the agricultural cow town. But as everyone knows, Bozeman has been experiencing remarkable growth for many years. With that growth comes a new dining option: J.W. Heist Steakhouse, in the heart of downtown Bozeman. Opened on January 3 by co-owners Michael Ochsner and Brent Evje, Heist is located at 27 East Main Street, and describes itself as offering timeless fare such as prime beef, fresh seafood, classic cocktails, and an award-winning wine list. Ochsner and Evje wanted to create a unique, sophisticated restaurant that pays homage to Montana’s ranching history while providing Bozeman with a classic American steakhouse. Patrons will find the entrance to Heist tucked inside a black-walled vestibule, and are greeted by a large Hereford oil painting upon entering the 5,600-square foot space. Locallycrafted leather and velvet banquettes line the brick walls, which used to enclose the dearly departed Crossroads Kitchen Supply store. Local art from Montana Trails Gallery and Tierney Fine Art adorn these walls, depicting Montana imagery like landscapes, wildlife, trappers, rodeos, and Yellowstone (all for sale on consignment). The antique Brunswick bar is center stage, showcasing a bowtied bartender expertly spinning cocktail shakers. Subtle jazz plays in the background, completing the warm, loungey vibe. Heist’s décor comes courtesy of William Peace of Peace Design, with

eclectic touches like bronze Western sculptures, a mounted red hartebeest head on the east-facing wall, and a stained-glass gate salvaged from a terminal at JFK International Airport. “Most of the light fixtures and hardware are from the old Waldorf Astoria in New York,” said Ochsner. Heist used locally-milled wood for its floors and trim, as well as basalt from nearby Paradise Valley for the hearth. The upscale menu does not disappoint, boasting a range of traditional starters, soup and salad options, composed dishes, and a worthy selection of steaks, which can be upgraded with such choices as fire-grilled mushrooms or penta crumbles (a bleu cheese variety), and steak sauces like green peppercorn or bearnaise. “The Argentinian-style grill is ideal for a fire-driven steakhouse,” explained John Thayer, Heist’s executive chef. “We chose fire because of its versatility and character, and also because it can proliferate into the rest of the menu in some way.” There is no chicken option to be found, but yes, a vegetarian can eat at Heist. Stay tuned. The other night, a pair of diners occupied a cozy booth for two, starting with a French Mediterranean rosé. The crab cake was just the right balance of briny and rich. One of the pair enjoyed the chopped salad and pasta primavera, a creamy tagliatelle with seared vegetables and hints of fresh basil. The other chose the 8-ounce Coulotte, mashed potatoes with snipped chives, and grilled broccolini. The essence of the white oak was palpable, but did not override the perfect flavor and velvety texture of the steak, which was cooked well-done as requested with no shaming from the server. When it came time for dessert, the Baked Alaska Flambé was the obvious choice. With its huckleberry, pistachio, and flaming kirsch, this particular confection thrilled the taste buds while entertaining the neighbors. So what inspired this refined, oldtimey yet new, and elegant steakhouse? After Evje and Ochsner met through the restaurant industry, they purchased

Plonk Wine in 2009. That same year, Boodles, a beloved Bozeman restaurant/ bar, was destroyed in a natural gas explosion. Both Evje and Ochsner found that they missed the atmosphere of Boodles, and started planning a new establishment that they hoped would evoke a similar experience. “We were going for an authentic ambiance and a space that feels like it’s been here for CONTINUED >

a long time,” explained Ochsner, “and Boodles had that. It had a timeless feeling, like it could have been there for 80 years and you wouldn’t have known it.” Evje’s proud heritage is also an influence. His great-grandfather, J.W. Heist, was born in Electric, Montana, in 1896 and was raised on a ranch in Cinnabar Basin outside Yellowstone Park. J.W. worked the ranch until he and his wife Alma relocated to Manhattan to

raise Polled Hereford bulls. He passed in 1993, leaving a rare legacy in the new steakhouse that bears his name. in Kitchen Design A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement. CONTINUED >

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while

others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen. CONTINUED >

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens.
