LIFESTYLE LETTER

Honoring the Men of Bozeman in our “Men’s Issue” This month we are proud to introduce you to Norm Dreyer and Rock Steady Boxing, and the healing effects of motion-specific exercise on Parkinson's disease. Mr. Dreyer has brought this form of therapy into the Gallatin Valley as a coach and mentor and created a whole new community. There are more than 300 known Parkinson's cases in the Gallatin Valley, and Rock Steady Boxing is helping more than 10% of them. The story is inspiring and another reminder of our local ingenuity and strength. I want to thank Top Tier Boxing for letting us use their facility for photos. They were gracious and accommodating, as we all have learned to appreciate from our fellow Montana residents. Carter’s Boots and Repair shares what it takes to not only perform true craftsman-level repairs but also be long-standing community partners. Their services not only support the Gallatin Valley community but they enjoy a broad reach across the United States and beyond because the craftsmanship they are able to perform has become a rare and valued commodity. Robert Leonard, a long standing cobbler and designer at Carter’s Boots and Repair, graces our cover. For many, Mr. Leonard's presence on Main Street has been recognized by locals for years and he has become nothing short of an icon. Patrick Kainz, or PK as he is more widely known, was a gracious host for our interview and photoshoot for award-winning MAP Brewing, one of our more substantial local breweries. His staff is loyal and proud to offer a gathering place over on Manley Drive. Just as we did last month for the “Ladies Issue” we are celebrating the men of Bozeman that drive our community. As we move into the summer season, we will be appreciating all of them as they serve our community and bring joy and service to our community.

Map Brewing Company The result of dedication and vision ARTICLE BY JEREMY GOOD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY 406 PHOTO

Nestled along the shore of the Bozeman beach with the Bridger Mountain range as a backdrop, MAP Brewing Company welcomes locals and visitors alike to enjoy both great food and great beer in their industrial-modern brewery and restaurant. Whether dining al fresco, sitting at the well-apportioned bar or dining at a table, you will be treated to a Montana experience you will not forget. MAP is a waterfront mecca with mountain vistas to be enjoyed throughout the year. MAP opened seven years ago but it feels as if they’ve been around for much longer. Owner Patrick (PK) Kainz is a 30-year resident who had a vision of

creating a one-of-a-kind experience around the brews they offer, and he’s accomplished just that. His wife, a local blacksmith, artist, and painter exhibits her work throughout. Repurposed whiskey barrels full of aging beer sit at the entrance of the brewing and canning facility, and a team of knowledgeable waitstaff ensures that each guest gets a world class experience. The brewery did not immediately offer culinary options, but PK quickly realized that he had a unique opportunity to offer something most breweries were not: good beer accompanied by good food. While the kitchen was being constructed, they brought in food

trucks, and once completed, they handcrafted the menu to include more than typical pub fare. They have grown from 16 employees in the beginning to upwards of 70 employees as they maximize the space and their menu. Ingredients for both the beer and the food are sourced from local producers. Be it malted barley or local beef, or a host of complimenting ingredients, they endeavor to keep their award-winning beer and made-from-scratch menu rooted in the richness of Montana’s agriculture. The malted barley is both harvested and malted with local Montana producers. PK worked with local malting facilities to more closely match capacity to demand in order to source exclusively from homegrown businesses for this key beer ingredient. Spent grain is sent to local ranches to feed their cattle and pigs in what equates to a dessert for the farm animals and adds further sustainability to their brewing process. The brewing and canning facilities are adjacent to the dining area. Large fifty-thousand-pound silos store the malted barley as it’s readied for the brewing process. These silos are filled up every three months to supply their robust brewing and canning operation. On brewing and canning days the savory aroma is heady. MAP distinguishes itself by also distributing their beer using in-house workers and not outsourcing their distribution to ensure they maintain a more personal relationship with their customers. Their service area the Gallatin and Paradise Valleys along with surrounding communities such as Big Sky, but chances are you will find Strange Cattle or another of their beers in most of the area’s food and drink locations. Although distribution remains localized, MAP Brewing enters beers in many national competitions and has won multiple medals which are displayed - in true Montana style - on the rack of an elk trophy. With the explosive growth of breweries in the United States, now

around nine thousand, winning the number of gold and silver medals they have is an impressive feat. MAP Brewing Company enjoys sponsoring events and being involved in the Bozeman community. Monday evenings are pint nights that support a local nonprofit. Every month they rotate which organization they support. Throughout the year they sponsor additional events such as film festivals and cross country or downhill ski races. PK says that “being part of and supporting the community is a crucial part of who we are as a business.” MAP Brewing Company has quickly become a Bozeman landmark. A homegrown business whose values are rooted in local involvement from start to finish defines success for all of us. Go see for yourself: They are open daily from 12 pm to 8 pm at 510 Manley Road.

The smell of leather and shoe shine fills your nose as you enter Carter’s Boots and Repair, a welcome scent met by a welcoming pup. Tawnie the dog, listed as Head of Morale on the company’s website, holds down the fort as you’re greeted by the Carters themselves. At first glance, the shop seems retail-oriented with shelves and racks adorned with vests and hats. But it’s behind the counter where the magic happens. Sewing machines older than the store itself find themselves scattered between the shoes and purses. Lasts and pliers are strewn across desktops, and of course, the warming perfume of leather creates centuries-old aromatherapy. A bustling business on East Main Street, Carter’s Boots and Repair has been a Bozeman staple since 1994. Jeff Carter, a cobbler for over 40 years now, his son Garrett, and leatherworker Robert Leonard are the masterminds behind the business, repairing shoes, belts, purses, etc. from all around the country. “We’ll get a couple of repairs shipped in each week… it’s hard to find a place like this now,” Garrett Carter explained. Carter’s is one of the few existing cobbler shops still around. With a wide variety of boot styles and leathers - and an even wider variety of services - it’s hard to beat what you get at Carter’s. “Repairs are a constant, we’re always finding new ways to repair stuff,” Garrett noted. The services they offer include fixing purses

22

FASH ION F OR WA R D | LOCAL S E RVI CE S

and belts, as well as resoling and reheeling shoes, applying patchwork and stitching on old or damaged leather, and fixing custom-ordered boots. “We grew about 25% last year,” Garrett shared - this growth has led them to seek out a stand alone location, and within the year Carter’s will find a home in the building where the Paint Pot used to be at 549 East Main. “This will add about another 100 square feet,” he mentioned, hoping it will allow them to have a little more independence with their space. Keep an eye out for the black and green logo going up next to the Music Villa this September. Carter’s is a Bozeman treasure: The shop has a lot to offer not only in terms of boots and services but in its ability to make customers feel at home. Every person who walks through the door is treated as an honored guest, and the atmosphere of the store feels genuine and homey. With inviting and friendly service and prices that are hard to beat, Carter’s has become a well-deserved staple to many Bozemanites and Montanans alike. Like Garrett Carter said himself, it’s hard to find many stores nowadays that will make you feel like you’re part of the family. Next time you’re in the market for some new boots, or are just looking to fix yours up a bit, come on down to Carter’s for an experience you won’t likely get anywhere else.

FIGHTING PARKINSON’S WITH EXERCISE

28

I NSP IR E D BY | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

NORM DREYER IS ROCK STEADY For Norm Dreyer, the word quit is not in his vocabulary. An avid motorcyclist and outdoorsman, as well as owner and operator of First Choice Home Health in Bozeman, Norm wasn’t about to let something like Parkinson’s Disease get in the way of his busy life. Diagnosed on his 60th birthday, he admits he had symptoms for a few years prior but had pretty much ignored them. “But once you get an actual diagnosis, you start researching everything you can to find out about what you are facing,” he said. “And the number one thing I found that all neurologists agree on, is the best treatment for Parkinson’s is exercise, exercise, exercise!” Armed with this information, Dreyer, himself an occupational therapist, began to look into what the best exercise regime would be for himself. And that is how he first heard of Rock Steady Boxing, a nonprofit organization designed to give people with Parkinson’s disease hope, by improving their quality of life through a non-contact boxing-based fitness curriculum. “Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative movement disorder that causes a deterioration of motor skills, balance, and speech,” Norm explained. “Studies in the 80s and 90s have shown us that the specific movements in boxing help with all those things as well as core strength, rhythm, posture, and gait.” Not only that but “it’s very satisfying

ARTICLE BY CAMILLE BISSELL

to hit a bag” he said with a laugh. “It’s like, take THAT, Parkinson’s!” Rock Steady is the only program of its kind and was founded in 2006 through the friendship of two men, Scott Newman and Vince Perez. Newman, a former prosecutor in Marion County Indiana, was diagnosed at the early age of 40, and Perez “refused to let his friend go without a fight.” He turned to his experience as a Golden Glove boxer and came up with a program that attacks Parkinson’s at all its vulnerable neurological points. “I was really impressed by everything I read on it, so I took the trip to Indianapolis to receive training as an instructor and coach,” Norm said. He says he was the only one out of 50 trainees who had the disease. “Most of them were fitness trainers or physical therapists or gym owners,” he explained. Armed with all new tools, Norm came back to Bozeman and started up the Rock Steady Boxing Yellowstone Bozeman chapter. Classes are currently held at the Prime Performance and Physio Gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 pm to 3:30 at 253 Village Center Lane in Four Corners. Zoom classes are also available. As for Norm, six years after his diagnosis and he still hasn’t let Parkinson’s slow him down any. Recently, he opted to undergo a procedure known as DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) at the Mayo Clinic. DBS involves inserting electrodes into targeted areas of

the brain using an MRI and recording all brain cell activity during the procedure. Not everyone with the disease can qualify and there were months of tests before Norm received the good news that he was considered a prime candidate. He was awake during the 5-hour long procedure and remembers the minute the doctor told him, “That’s it right there! Look at your hand now!” And for the first time in years, there was no tremor. Norm is quick though to let people know this is not a cure, it just helps slow down and contain the symptoms. He encourages anyone with Parkinson’s disease to check out Rock Steady and see just what a difference it can make.“It’s only for people with the disease and so there is really a sense of camaraderie,” Norm said. “It’s like a support group and a workout all rolled up in one!”

MEN’S GROOMING

ARTICLE BY ALEXIS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAPELLIS

SALONS ARE NOT JUST FOR WOMAN ANYMORE

Salons are not solely a woman’s world anymore. Men’s grooming has greatly evolved over the last 15 years. The Montana alpha male of years ago would never have dreamt of stepping foot into a women’s hair salon. Now, many men have chosen to embrace the process in all forms from more frequent haircuts, coloring and smoothing treatments, skincare regimens, waxing, and nail services. We now live in a truly global community and an even more media-driven world. We are often influenced not only by those around us but by the many trends we see from around the world. Finding a good stylist who can and will understand your needs is key. Booking more frequent appointments is a great way to get more organized and build a better relationship with your stylist and salon. Your stylist will then be able
