LIFESTYLE LETTER
Celebrating the Women of Bozeman This month we are celebrating some of the many amazing women of Bozeman - and we celebrate mothers on Sunday May 8! On our cover, looking like superheroes, are Brenda Stredwick and son, Everett. The founder of Iron Maiden Welding, Brenda is not only an incredibly talented metal artist but is passing on those skills to her son. “A woman with a voice is, by definition, a strong woman,” observes Melinda French Gates. Alongside Brenda, read about Instagram® sensations, Those Drywall Chicks. Brittany and Ashley Luly. The Karate Kids, a/k/a the Singleton girls, are self-taught National Champions and Olympians. More powerhouses: Nancy Mahone of Moka Boutique, has a team of fashionable creatives; two doors down Main; Babs Noel and Alara’s ensemble are visionaries; around the corner are Anne Houle’s StretchLab and Lauren Hutson, oenologist of Blend, a Bozeman Winery. In Big Sky, Dr. Kaley Burns and Kallie Harrison offer Big Sky Natural Health, where clients find professionalism, deeply informed practitioners, and always big, positive energy. Jessi McCloud runs JLM Construction and is a fierce mentor for young professionals. Kris Nunn’s eponymous interior design firm dovetails with architecture, because it more adroitly expresses her clients’ vision of home. Taunya Fagan has created a Real Estate Co-op, a platform which is designed to allow realtors to be independent. Ballet dancers, in order to pirouette, must focus on a fixed object to avoid losing balance. Similarly, in an ever-evolving community, touchstones of integrity must stay constant. In a month celebrating women, we take a moment to pause and toast the myriad businesswomen who have found their niche, expanded their gifts to touch all of us, and who so nimbly create the Bozeman we know today. Cheers to you all, and to all our Moms out there, Happy Mothers Day!

KARATE KIDS Self Taught Champions
ARTICLE BY JEREMY GOOD
It all started during a family vacation when a family of Montana girls decided they wanted to go to the Olympics in Karate. Zac Singleton, their father, calls it a pound of Montana grit. Had they ever practiced or been exposed firsthand to karate? No. But fulfilling that dream, is a Montana story of resilience and dedication that reaches throughout the world. Four of the five girls in the family are national karate champions, one of the girls is on track for the 2026 Olympics as the sole representative of the United States in karate; and they created a world class traditional and sport karate, training facility right here in Bozeman with a three-time world champion Sensei Elisa Au teaching the next generation. Every little kid has a dream. They talk about it and often those dreams change as they age. For these girls, that dream became a reality as they stuck with it under the most inauspicious of circumstances. The beginning of the dream was days spent training using farm equipment and internet videos to begin training for a sport they knew nothing about. Zac recalls a day months after the vacation when he asked his wife where the girls were. They were in the barn training as they had nearly every day with a gym put together from whatever materials they could find. He knew at that point the girls were serious about their dream.

Fast forward several years and the family is now traveling around the globe to compete in the sport they love. Despite a foundation of no traditional training and the intimidating cost of competing on the global stage, this family has realized the dreams of their girls and are passing that on to more families at the Montana Karate Academy.

B ACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE
Growing up on a ranch in Idaho, Brenda Stredwick says the motto was “If you don’t fix it yourself it doesn’t get fixed” and that was how an eight-year old little girl first got into welding. “I followed dad around all over the place,” she said, “and so finally to keep me from being underfoot he taught me how to weld. It worked out for both of us because dad really hated welding himself.” Brenda says she was always artistic and enjoyed drawing but it wasn’t until her teenage years that she first turned her welding skills into artwork. “I was 16 and working at a restaurant and to make some extra money I started building and selling horseshoe coat racks.” Her side business took off quickly and soon people were asking her to make all sorts of things and Iron Maiden Welding was born. “It was a slow process,” Brenda said “I was doing all the work at home and dragging the welder out into the yard.” She explained that her father started bringing wood home and finally, wall by wall, an actual shop came into fruition. Brenda has designed and constructed all sorts of projects from yard flowers, signs, railings and memorial pieces: all while being self-taught. “I went to a trade school briefly in Coeur d’Alene, but they really couldn’t teach me anything I didn’t know. In fact she said her dad even taught her how to weld by sound with her eyes closed, because “the old helmets were so heavy I couldn’t see through them anyway.” She said some of her favorite projects are when a customer brings her old tools that belonged to their grandfather and asks
her to design something out of it. One of her favorite undertakings and the biggest piece she has worked on involved turning a 1940 pick-up truck into a planter. “It didn’t have a motor and it was completely gutted,” Brenda explained. “ So I used a plasma welder to cut designs into it, planted flowers in the hood area and put a bench inside where people can sit and have pictures made.” After running Iron Maiden Welding for 16 years in Salmon, Idaho, Brenda made the move to Montana and has been in business in Bozeman for the past 13 years. Her first shop was on Jackrabbit Road but for a year now she has been at the new and larger location at 351 Floss Flats Road in Belgrade. The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 to 3 and in addition to Brenda’s art pieces, she also has jewelry from different local vendors such as Spot of Gold, Jo Jones Jewelry and Bonepile Bling. It’s not every day that someone can say they love what they do but Brenda definitely can. “I don’t feel like I’ve ever had a day of work” she said. “I really enjoy it.” And it’s definitely turning into a family tradition. Her 11 year old son Everett Pavlovick began following in his mother’s footsteps few months ago and already has back orders for his art, which is also on display at the shop. Iron Maiden Welding will be hosting a big “Spring into Spring” sale the weekend of April 8-9. For more information you can check out both the Facebook and Instagram page or call (406) 388-4121.

Those Drywall Chicks From Hanging to Taping, these ladies are getting it done. ARTICLE BY MIA PETERSON
Drywall is an industry where one is going to get their hands dirty. And no two people know that lifestyle better than the dynamic duo, Ashley and Brittany Luly of Luly Drywall, otherwise known as “Those Drywall Chicks.” The women have been busy: from taking on the family business to becoming a huge presence on social media, these sisters, joined at the hip and twins through and through, amount their success and their passion to two things: their family values and their love of the art of drywall. Brittany put it best: “You don’t choose drywall, drywall chooses you.” She attributed their success

to the fact that not only were they taught the art of drywalling from a very young age, but from their own father, who always encouraged them to get their hands dirty. The sisters enjoy hunting, fishing and a variety of outdoor activities that Montanans enjoy. Concerning Bozeman in particular, Those Drywall Chicks reflected that they have an enduring love of this place and never want to leave. They repeatedly experience support and encouragement from the Bozeman community. When asked how does it feels to sometimes be the only women on the job site, the sisters replied, “There are moments when a guy will

be like ‘Hey, can I talk to the boss?’ and my sister or I have to say, ‘that’d be me,’ but really, we are seeing huge support on job sites and are becoming well established.” The sisters never thought that they would become the powerhouse they have become today. These two sisters who

HAIR
PROPERLY APPLIED EXTENSIONS
T O D AY
ARTICLE BY KELLE GUILFORD PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAPELLIS SALON
30
G IV IN G BAC K | BEAU TY
“A salon used to simply be the place for someone to receive regular hair maintenance and purchase basic hair products. Fast forward to present day, and there are many salons, spas, and shops who offer a myriad of services and retail. Having been apart of the beauty industry for almost thirteen years, I’ve seen the demand for hair services come and go over the years. As the Gallatin Valley continues to grow at record rates, the more service and retail offerings are now available. Hair extensions are not a new service but has seen increasing demand over the last several years. Hand-tied extensions are the new favorite technique. The method starts by taking wefts of hair and stacking them on top of each other to form a row. The row is then tied to the natural hair with beads and string. One row can add thickness while two to four rows can add both thickness and length. This service can take several hours and may include a hair cut and color. Expect to move the extension hair up every eight to twelve weeks depending on the outgrowth of hair. If taken care of properly, the wefts can last up to a year. The same rules apply to taking care of extensions as they do for your natural hair. Always use salon grade products and wash your hair once or twice a week. To encourage the longevity of the wefts, and to keep them silky smooth, perform a deep conditioning masque once or twice a month. Budget more time to blow dry, but once they are styled, the curls can last for days. Hair extensions are not a necessity but a luxury that can be well deserved. The exhausted mother, who has little time for herself, remembers taking pride in her appearance and will love being able to fix her hair once and have it last several days. The college student, who is looking for that extra boost of confidence and will save her pennies to achieve her statement look. The successful business woman, who will value the initial investment of time on the front end so she can perform minimal maintenance at home for a polished look in every meeting. Finally, hair extensions can benefit the woman who suffers from hair loss. No matter the reason, alopecia, cancer, or a stressful life event, hair extensions can bring her comfort and happiness. Bozeman and the surrounding area has a number of hair stylists. Qualities such as a willingness to learn new techniques and investing in new product lines are what separate the good ones from the incredible ones. When you select your new salon and stylist, expect your stylist to be a good listener and interpreter of the client’s request. Your stylist should be artistic and creative. Most importantly, your stylist should have a happy and positive attitude to be able to give you the ultimate experience in the chair.”
