CLIENT TESTIMONIAL “I have worked with 4 different realtors and Taunya by far was the best agent I have worked with. In the beginning she took the time to understand what we were looking for in a house and followed up with sending us great listings. We are coming from out of state, so she was our eyes and ears on the ground. She spent time going and seeing all the houses we were looking at and gave us a fair judgement of the house with videos and commentary that made us feel comfortable to buy a house out of state. She always talked us through offer strategies and did a great market study of the area. Once we found the house we were looking for she helped us make it reality. It only took us two offers to find the right property. She helped negotiate closing cost credits and furniture to be left in house. Not only would I rate her a 10/10 as a realtor, but she’s also an amazing person. Go with her, you will not be disappointed.” Ryan T. - BOUGHT with Taunya!

LIFESTYLE LETTER
The change of seasons
October 2022 PUBLISHER

Rebecca Ballotta | rebeccaballotta2.0@gmail.com
I love all of the changes of seasons, but fall and spring are my favorites, even the cold days. October generally represents a sense of impending winter. It is only a matter of time before we see our first snow if we haven’t already. We sign off on summer in October and hopefully still enjoy fall, but in Montana, that is not always the case. We can also see a warm fall all month long, but it’s the last month that we can expect that as a possibility. In Montana, we are generally pretty well on our way in preparation for winter. We have our winter coats and boots available and are ready to wake up any morning to snow on the ground. School is well underway, the tourist season in Bozeman has passed, and we begin to look at the expected snowfall for the year and get our ski gear ready to go. Football Season is underway, coffee becomes a daily staple again, and, at least in my case, flannel is the shirt of choice. Even in the warmest Octobers, we get days where the cold winds of changing seasons cut through our clothes and begin to train our bodies for the winter months. For me, in January, the best temperature is 28 degrees. You stay dry, the cold doesn’t cut through, and the layers are comfortable. By March, 45 degrees is almost too hot. But after the summer heat, that first windy day at 30 degrees can feel pretty cold. That day often comes in October. All that said, I'll take cold over hot, and the fall weather in October can be counted on to not get into the 90s. We could get feet of snow and hold below freezing for a time, but it probably won’t last too long. Halloween kicks off the holiday season and gives reason to celebrate. We start to plan for the other upcoming holidays and, for parents, school events become a priority. There are many things to look forward to in October. A TASTE OF RANCH LIFE Wickens Ranch Delivers it From Their Pasture to Your Table
14
LOCA LLY SOU R CE D | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
“The cattle business is tough. Commodity beef pricing is based on the market, not the quality of the livestock.”
Wickens Ranch has been a long-standing, respected family ranch in Winefred, Montana for generations. My family as ranchers, livestock auction yard owners, and community partners have known them to be good people, solid beef producers, and community partners. When I learned that they were producing fresh, premium cuts of beef, it was not surprising. When I realized that they are also delivering it, rather than shipping it, that was a little unexpected, so I had to ask why. When I spoke with Jason Wickens about it, he was able to explain the business model very well. The cattle business is tough. Commodity beef pricing is based on the market, not the quality of the livestock. No matter how hard a rancher works to create the absolute best livestock, through years of breeding and a lifetime of care, the price will still be driven by the market. So the Wickens brothers, Jason, Matt, and Eric, decided that, rather than leave the fate of the longstanding, multigenerational family ranch to the market, they would take their high-quality beef directly to the consumer. This was no simple task, however. To accomplish this, they had to add multiple new industries to their business. The ranch had always been in the livestock industry. By the nature of the business, ranchers sometimes are also in the transportation industry. Taking the finished product directly to the consumer meant they also had to learn the processing industry, including the safety and quality control elements. This venture also required learning the retail industry, including the warehousing and inventory management requirements. CONTINUED >

“What Wickens Ranch offers is the absolute most direct ‘farm to table’ experience available in beef. They set up booths at the farmers market, right alongside other ag producers, allowing people to literally buy everything they need for dinner directly, from the farmers who harvest and sell their produce in person to the ranchers who produce the main course.” To get the finished product into the consumer's hands, they considered the shipping industry, which has its own problems, not the least of which are the potentially sweeping changes in its expense. Shipping is also not very personal, and they want that direct personal contact. They determined that, rather than shipping, they would deliver locally, to a prime market that would appreciate the quality they are offering. So they found themselves back in the transportation industry. Delivering beef requires sufficient packaging and process to provide the absolute best quality product. Delivery requires staffing and vehicles and is still subject to fuel prices. The market Wickens Ranch serves is Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley. Since not all of the Bozeman residents live in Bozeman year-round, they sometimes do ship to loyal customers at their request. Most of the beef is delivered locally, directly from the rancher to the end user. What Wickens Ranch offers is the absolute most direct “farm to table” experience available in beef. They set up booths at the farmers market, right alongside other ag producers, allowing

people to literally buy everything they need for dinner directly, from the farmers who harvest and sell their produce in person to the ranchers who produce the main course. The Wickens brothers are also community partners. They can regularly be found grilling and donating burgers at local events. Jason Wickens provided the grills and the beef, and ran the grill himself for one of our recent local Bozeman City Lifestyle magazine events. People in the livestock and agricultural industries have long been known for ingenuity and hard work. The Wickens brothers have taken even that to the next level. They take the highest quality livestock, process it into the highest quality consumer product, and deliver it with the highest quality standards. They have truly raised the bar, exclusively for Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley, for the main course at dinner. Look for the Wickens Ranch ad in this magazine for their contact information so you can become part of something special, contribute locally, and get the highest quality beef delivered to your doorstep.

Blend
Serving fine foods with fine wines 20
M UST SE E | FOOD + BEVE RAGE
If you’re looking for fine dining and excellent wine, look no further than Blend in downtown Bozeman. Owner Michael Ruhland, originally from Memphis and a self-taught chef, had worked in establishments such as The Yellowstone Club and the Rainbow Ranch for 20 years, and it was those experiences which spurred him to bring some of that culture to the Bozeman area. “I gained the experience I needed in those positions, but the place wasn’t mine,” Michael said. “I wanted to pair my foods with my wine in my own place,” so Blend first opened their doors in July 2018. The Valo Cellar wines are made strictly with grapes from Washington and are processed in a custom crush facility in Walla Walla under the direction of winemaker Matías Kúsulas. They’re then brought to the facility in Four Corners for bottling. Valo, one of the wine styles featured at Blend, is also available at Ruhland’s new establishment in the Vancouver Waterfront Development. Valo wines focus on Bordeauuz and Rhone varieties as well as Burgundian style chardonnays, and more recently, the Pinot Noirs using grapes from both sides of the Columbia Valley as a way to enjoy, compare, and contrast the strengths and differences of Washington and Oregon Pinots. Selections of these wines include the 2019 Valo Cellars Chardonnay, aged for 12 months in French Oak puncheons prior to bottling; the 2018 Valo Cellars Merlot featuring sagebrush and chocolate aromas with wild blackberry; and the 2018 Valo Cellars Malbec Syrah, a deeply colored wine with blackberry compote, chocolate cake and herbal undertones. Massalto wines are also featured at Blend and the winery in Vancouver, including both the 2019 and 2020 Massalto “Sauvalanche” White Wine, the 2019 Massalto “Irreverent” Viognier, the 2020 Massalto “Extravaganza” Cinsault, the 2019 Massalto “Interstellar” Mourvedre, and the 2020 Massalto “The Point of No Return” Grenache. “I want to bring some of the Washington brand of winery to Bozeman,” Michael said. “We have wine tasting at Blend, wine pairing dinners, and I would really like to see our wine club grow and evolve.” The wine club features new releases every quarter, usually offering white wines in the spring and summer and red wines during the fall and winter, and members get the very first taste. Membership is $120 per release and the dates are midMarch, mid-June, mid-September, and early December. Members can also skip any release without being charged.

M UST SE E | FOOD + BEVE RAGE
Under the direction of new manager Rob Patterson, Blend is also working on offering larger wine pairing dinners with even more entrees to choose from. Currently, patrons can choose from selections such as a cheese and charcuterie board featuring 3 meats and 3 cheeses, smoked salmon dip, pulled pork sliders, herb Valencia almonds, and sweets such as spiced chocolate mousse and Amaltheia goat cheese panna cotta. Each selection can be paired with just the right selection of wine, and customers can also enjoy live music every Friday and Saturday night featuring local artists. Ladies night is a regular at Blend as well, offering ½ off small plates and $5 glasses of tap wine and $20 bottles every Tuesday night. While Blend does feature wine on tap, Michael says he is really trying to promote the wine growlers, a container designed to be filled, refilled, and covered for the
purpose of off-premises consumption or secure transportation of the wine for later consumption. The modern glass growler was first introduced by Charlie and Ernie Otto of Otto Brothers Brewing Company in Wilson, Wyoming, and, while mainly associated with beer, Michael believes the growlers are really the way to go for wine as well. Lastly, if you are looking for the perfect venue for your private party, Blend will take care of everything from the details and logistics to all the food and wine. Catering is also offered for private dinner parties up to 40 people and wine and appetizer parties up to 70 people, featuring both cold and hot appetizers. Located at 31 S Wilson in downtown Bozeman, Blend is open from 4 to 9 pm Monday through Thursday, 12 to 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and is closed on Sundays.

Eat Well, Live Well, and Be Well THE WELL JUICERY IS RIGHT HERE IN BOZEMAN
ARTICLE BY CAMILLE BISSELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY 406 PHOTO What started out as a health crisis has turned into one unique eatery right here in Bozeman. Sierra Brask, owner of The Well Juicery, credits her own experiences with an unrecognizable illness that sparked her quest to find a healthy nontraditional treatment. “My symptoms started in high school,” she said. “But by the time I was 23 I wasn’t walking or talking!” Sierra said the doctors were baffled and suggested everything from Multiple Sclerosis to Lyme disease. “All they did was keep throwing pills at me. And nothing worked, so I decided to walk away from conventional medicine.” She set out on her own and for the next 4 years, traveled all over the world doing research in Switzerland,

Germany, Mexico, and all over the United States. “I learned something new from every place I visited,” she said. “I turned my own body into a giant science experiment, and it finally dawned on me, it’s all about what we put in and on our bodies!” A native of Bozeman, Sierra decided she wanted to bring what she had learned to her own hometown and The Well Juicery was born and opened its doors for business November 2021. Located at 4575 Valley Common Drive Suite 101, the establishment isn’t what one would expect from a juicery. “Everything we use is 100% organic and not just smoothies either,” Sierra said. “Our juices aren’t like what you find in your fridge, they are all cold pressed with a hydraulic press which means you
keep all the vitamins and minerals intact and don’t lose anything through heat and air like you would with a blender. And we are also the only juicery I’ve come across that uses wild blueberries as an ingredient. They are full of antioxidants and very medicinal.” The Well Juicery features a menu of all the items Sierra has been making for herself for years. Items such as juices, smoothies, wellness shots, smoothie bowls, healthy snacks, hot elixirs, including Mexican Hot Chocolate and Golden Chai, and lunch items such as avocado toast, chickpea green salads, and grab-and-go wraps. “I want people to know I do more than just juice,” Sierra said. “I live by our motto, ‘Eat well, live well and be well.’” CONTINUED >

Food as Hair Care Not What You Might Think ARTICLE BY MARCI HENRY
You might think this article is about home remedies that include items like mayonnaise or eggs as leave-in conditioners or spreading honey lilac (insert all-natural ingredient here) for hair volume. However, the aspect of food in the hair industry we’re going to review is how the food you consume could affect your hair health. Getting down to the “roots” of the matter, your hair is, as I consider it, your biggest accessory. The growth rate, overall health, and visual brilliance are affected by several health-related topics, and food represents a large interest as a contributing factor. By all means, don’t stop eating those cheeseburgers or hitting that late-night munchie sesh at the fridge just yet because, as we all know, when we talk about food – individual results may vary. Studies suggest deficiencies in vitamins B12, D, biotin, riboflavin, iron, and other nutrients are associated with

hair loss. Eating a balanced diet that is rich in these vitamins and minerals may help promote hair growth, especially if you’re not getting proper values of nutrition. Just a few of the foods that can directly contribute to hair health are: eggs, leafy greens, fatty fish, berries, avocadoes, nuts, oysters, and naturally raised meats. This isn’t just the “coursed dinner” list my husband took me to the other evening; it’s a set-list for some foods you can start incorporating into your diet to promote healthy factors for your hair. Fortunately, correcting a deficiency in any of the nutrients that relate to hair health may help treat hair loss and promote the rate and quality of hair growth. Although you can’t change some factors, like age and genetics, one factor you likely have more control over is your diet. And remember life’s too short to not eat great food and have amazing looking hair.
