THE AUGUST ISSUE OF BOZEMAN LIFE MAGAZINE HAS SPECIAL MEANING TO ME ON A PERSONAL LEVEL. Dream Flights is bringing Operation September Freedom to Bozeman on August 15th. My grandfather flew B-17 missions in the Pacific theater of WWII. He is no longer with us to celebrate, but I know he would have greatly appreciated a chance to take a Dream Fight. He may even have been trained in a Boeing Stearman biplane, such as the ones they are using.. I want to thank Greg Baker of Billion Auto Group, who organized this event, for

including Bozeman Life Magazine. I am proud to be a part of the Bozeman leg of the Operation September Freedom tour to honor those of the Greatest Generation. It was a delight to work with Greg and Brian Sprenger, Director of the Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport to coordinate the logistics. The Cedar Ridge Equines story also resonates personally. Having grown up in an agriculture family, ranching and livestock are my roots. Amy Precter’s operation at Cedar Ridge Equines goes far beyond horse boarding and riding lessons. One of the things I appreciate about how she runs her camps is the involvement she offers

Watching the kids demonstrate respect to the teachers and animals is a pleasure. Cedar Ridge Equines is truly a great community service. I hope to see many of the readers of Bozeman Life Magazine at the Dream Flights event on August 15th. I also would like to encourage supporters of Operation

LOCALLY OWNED IN THE PURSUIT OF PLAY…

ARTICLE ZOE STRAUSS

State of Play STATE OF PLAY IS AN INTENTIONAL AND MODERN INDOOR PLAY AND ART SPACE WHERE PLAY CULTURE IS BEING RE-INVENTED. Coming to Bozeman, Winter 2021/22, State of Play’s creative and educationally-informed space will engage families with children ages 0-6, making it a place where children and grown-ups can connect through the power of play. State of Play will be a parent or caregiver accompaniment experience, inviting the grownup to join the child in play and art-making opportunities. Cofounders Kama Werner and Katie Dolen come from backgrounds in business and progressive early childhood education, respectively. Their mission is to create a space where education, community, and intentional design merge to make an engaging and inviting environment for children and grownups. The foundation of their philosophy revolves around exposing the important life skills that occur when children play, such as problem

solving, collaboration, independence, perseverance, and emotional regulation. Openended play materials -those without instructions or pre-determined rules - give children the freedom and courage to explore and imagine; they provide opportunities to highlight the beauty of spontaneity and nurture creativity, curiosity, and innovation. While play is their primary focus, State of Play is committed to building a strong community in Bozeman. This community-centric approach will create a supportive and informative space for parents and caregivers to access helpful resources, gathering leading field experts and developmental information all in one place. State of Play believes that a major part of building a strong community is inclusivity. ALL people deserve access to high quality creative experiences. Through State of Play’s Equitable Access program, they have already established a scholarship program and will work with local non-profits to connect even more people to have access to these impactful play programs. From infants to grownups there will be opportunities for EVERYONE to Play, Connect and Grow! State of Play is thrilled to be working with Bozeman design firm “MFGR Designs” in order to balance whimsy and imagination with function and high design. Their 3,000 square foot facility in Bozeman’s Cannery District will be sure to bring joy to our ever growing community.

MAPS TO BETTER PERFORMANCE AND FASTER RECOVERY

16

Bozeman Life | August 2021

WE HAVE A NEW ADDITION FOR INCREASING PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE AND SPEEDING RECOVERY IN BOZEMAN. STRETCHLAB, located a few doors down from BLEND on Willson, is open and ready to assist Bozeman’s highly active citizens of all ages and levels of activity with assisted stretching, which allows for a deeper, more targeted stretch than can be achieved on our own. For golfers, improved flexibility can be a stroke changer. For athletes in more vigorous sports, stretching leads to better performance and recovery. For those who are working long hours, proper stretching can ensure better sleep and less pain. As we age, things we want tight begin to loosen, and things we want loose start to tighten. This can lead to poor posture and possible injury. Retaining flexibility becomes more difficult and simultaneously becomes more important. STRETCHLAB utilizes MAPS, a revolutionary 3D body scanning tool to determine areas that need attention so they can customize your stretch for maximum effectiveness.

TAUNYA FAGAN’S ESTATE HOUSE IS THE END RESULT OF YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AND A DESIRE TO HELP OTHERS. It took years of experience and a recipe that included empathy, ambition, developing relationships, and hard work. When Taunya began her real estate career with Prudential, there were many long-established processes consistently practiced by all of the local realtors. Taunya recognized that to stand out she had to be different, do more. Her mentor, Joyce Miller, hired her as an assis-

and monthly magazines, and created television commercials advertising her listings. Taunya had the wisdom to create a website when she first started out in 2004, but she says she didn’t use it at all. Then one day in 2007, a friend of hers told her about SEO (Search Engine Optimization). “He said he knew someone selling blow-up swimming pools on the World Wide Web and making a killing just because they figured out how to make the most of keywords,” she explained. Fagan turned that information over to her husband Brett, and for the next several years, he worked non-stop to make her website “the first one that came up” in Bozeman

and Montana real estate searches. She also said Brett was the first in Montana to effectively utilize all platforms of social media for real estate, establishing a presence everywhere. This partnership with her husband, Brett, worked out well, She said, “We are both chiefs, and he’s chief over his domain, I’m chief over mine. He’s brilliant at what he does, has his masters in English, and is all self-taught.” She said, “He had my website on the top of every keyword search imaginable and that was before Zillow, Trulia, etc… He’s definitely my web GURU!” Taunya spent ten years working at Prudential and was the top performer in Montana for the last five of those years. Even during the real estate crash in 2008, while others were shutting down, Taunya says she had a revolving door.

Her client and good friend Jon Stites, with Edward Jones, finally convinced her to make a change. “Why are you paying high brokerage fees when you could be doing this yourself?” he asked. As the conversation developed, the real estate coop began to take shape… In creating a structure that can provide a work-

For the Brokers, they had an opportunity for collaboration and comradery with like-minded professionals while also being independent. “I love the concept,” Taunya said. “Brokers can lease their own space and be their own boss.” It offers each Broker the freedom to run their own business with shared common facilities.

Taunya wanted to create an elegant space that could comfortably house independent Brokers, sharing common areas, such as the beautiful lounge area, conference room, and adjacent kitchen, but also include private, professional office spaces with beautiful views. Taunya designed the space to allow for large gatherings and events but it is also warm and inviting for guests entering on a quiet afternoon. Utilizing extensive real estate design, an eye for detail, and a talent for expressing the brand, she created ESTATE House. Taunya gave her ideas and designs to Stites and they worked together to make her dream come true. ESTATE House is a modern and unique real estate model which offers personal, boutique, and luxury services. ESTATE House features top independent, highly experienced Brokers in the area including The Marcie HahnKnoff Group, Michael Blevins, Michael Morgner, and Taunya Fagan. Brokers don’t have to pay high franchise fees or splits and Taunya states they can write off the lease fee as a business expense each year. It’s a win/win for everyone! “It also offers everyone the support and collaboration of their peers,” Fagan said. “You can be independent without being a Lone Ranger.”

OUR TOWN

SUMMER CAMP GETS WESTERN DREAM

IT,

BELIEVE

IT,

AND

ACHIEVE IT! That is the motto of Amy Prechter, owner of Cedar Ridge Equine in Bozeman, a full-service horse facility. Amy herself has been on the back of a horse since she was 4 years old living in Grass Valley, California, and credits her father Ed with getting her started. “We raised Morgans,” she explained. “So I’ve always been around horses and when I first started college in California, I was already teaching riding lessons and helping out with camps. I knew I’d never finish school if I stayed there because I was so involved with those things, so I came to MSU to finish my degree.” But after just a few months, Amy says she knew “I just couldn’t be without a horse” and so Cedar Ridge came into being. It’s made up of ten acres and includes a large indoor arena, several

barns, and enough horses for all of the riders, of all ages. But there is a very strict policy on boarding your horses, Amy explained. “I don’t want any of them ignored, and so we have a program called dedicated riders and if you are boarding your horse here you have to commit to six riding lessons each month.” In addition to the dedicated riders, Cedar Ridge also offers year-round classes and clinics in basic horsemanship,

riding,

Western Dressage, speed events, halter and showmanship, barrel and pole clinics, and a stable hand program. The summer camps include youth, beginner, and advanced and run from June through August. Currently, 90% of the horses are provided by the facility and Amy says she has kids of all ages from five years old up to college-aged and with all levels of skill.

But it’s not all about riding and competitions. “That’s why the stable hand program is so important,” she explained. “They learn that with a horse also comes responsibility and focus.” Youngsters in this program will do everything from mucking out stalls to repairing fences while learning all about the equipment that comes with a horse. They even help out with the petting zoo and the garden. CONTINUED >

“We host workshops for 4-H and the scouts,” Amy said. “I’m

currently the leader of the Gallatin Gallopers 4-H club and the Horseless Horse Project geared towards working with those that aren’t able to own their own horse.” And Cedar Ridge has even hosted focus workshops for soccer teams!” In addition to all that, Amy is certified with EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) which, in simple terms, is a form of using horses to help promote mental health and well-being. She also has participated in

working with young people from Eagle Mount in Bozeman which offers individuals with physical disabilities the opportunity to experience adventures such as horseback riding. With no lack of things to keep her busy, she still has the time to host an upcoming fun event with local artist Allison McGee called “ride and paint.” This will be held in August and features an afternoon of riding followed by appetizers, beverages, and a guided horse-themed painting lesson with McGee.

BALANCE Crafting and journaling are done outside, whenever possible, on the grass under a canopy of beautiful trees.

Bozeman Life | August 2021

NOT JUST HORSES There are a lot more than horses for the kids to learn about at Cedar Ridge Equine. They learn to care for all sorts of livestock, including ponies, cattle, pigs, goats, chickens and there are several barn cats prowling about.

FACILITY

FROM THE COVER

We’d like to introduce Ed, the newest addition to the

family at Cedar Ridge. The foal was not only named after the famous “Mr. Ed” but also Amy’s father Ed, who

passed away this spring. “Dad would have loved that,” she said. “And trust me we have high hopes for Ed!”

Learning to care for the horses is just as important as learning to ride them. Grooming, feeding graining and properly putting tack on a horse are taught at camp as well. They are waiting for you.

CULINARY CREATIONS

Chef ’s Ta ble ARTICLE ZOE STRAUSS | PHOTOGRAPHY CONTENT CREATIVE LAB GARLIC HAS LONG BEEN CONSIDERED PROTECTIVE AND A STAPLE FOR GOOD HEALTH. Ancient midwives kept strings of garlic in birthing rooms to ward off evil. King Tutankhamun’s tomb was found with cloves of garlic scattered among the priceless treasures. For Bozeman’s own Monte Faretto, the love for and propagation of garlic also has ancestral roots. “My mother was a long distance operator during the days of landlines. My dad was in the navy and when he’d call home to his mother, his call would route through my mother’s desk. He picked her up over the phone, had a date, and they married 21 days later. They lived happily together until both passed on at 93 years old. Dad had continued what his father-in-law had begun, in both profession and pastime: They were millworkers and garlic farmers. My granddad used to say that he grew ‘garlic, cabbage, and garlic.’ Dad always used his own crop proceeds to pay land taxes. Mom made a fresh baguette in the mornings, brushed with roasted garlic and sun-dried tomatoes. Wonderful! “When dad’s eyesight began to fail, I began helping him with his crops, turning out my first crop in 2011. I’ve been growing strong ever since, turning out around 300 pounds per year. “When Joe and Meg Romano developed Nina’s Tacos & Tequila, they needed tables. I was a welder by trade and built some tables. My farming was an early organic conversation with consummate chefs, so I

began supplying them and we enjoyed the fruits of all our labor. A common passion for garlic brought us together! My mom passed away last November and a fifty-pound box of garlic fell from the garage shelf that I’d forgotten about. I gave it to Joe and he made a broth out of it. I just keep replanting garlic for mom and dad.” What are Monte’s plans for the future of his garlic obsession? He has written a grant to install a more efficient irrigation system. Eventually, he would like to add an intern to assist with planting and harvest. You’ll find Monte’s Garlic-for-Sale sign in August, at the corner of Third and Parkview off of S. 19th on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 2 to 5 pm. And if you’d like to grow your own, Monte advises, “Plant in early September before it snows or freezes. Put a bulb in the ground, tip-up. The following July, when tips begin to turn brown, harvest and cure it.”
