Working on the story, we got to collaborate with employees that truly appreciate their roles working for Kenyon Noble. There is so much pride in what they do and the company they work for, it is both humbling and inspiring. Prior to the Covid upheaval, Kenyon Noble put on multiple events to support the local communities. They are chomping at the bit to get started on that again, at full scale, when it is possible. Some of the events they host have been father & son traditions for generations. Even the expansions into the neighboring communities can be seen as a commu-

DECADES OF EXPERIENCE, A PASSION FOR BEING THE BEST, STATE OF THE ART EQUIPMENT & LOVE OF SKIING MY MEMORIES OF BEING A SKI TECH ARE A CHERISHED CONNECTION TO ANOTHER TIME WHEN FREE-HEELING WAS CALLED PINNING. In those days, we used a stone grinder and a belt sander, edged with a file and waxed with an iron. Nick & Melinda Turner have taken that classic ski shop, added decades of impassioned experience, installed state-of-the-art equipment, hired skilled seasoned staff, to create an experience that provides the absolute best boot fitting and ski tuning available and yet retains the feel of the days of old. 14

They have even converted an ancient soda bottle vending machine into a kegerator, and offer complimentary brew. SKI TUNING The Stone Grinder is automated and lovingly named the “Montana Snow Star”. After “blanking” the base, they apply their signature structure called “Cotton Mouth”, designed to create the best base performance for our local conditions. Both stages include an emulsion fluid that prevents edge rust. Skis then move to the Edging Machine named “Crystal Edge”. The side and base are done simultaneously and since it is automated, you get the perfect bevel every time. Finally, the skis move to the Infrared Waxing machine. The wax is applied first, then the machine travels back and forth across the skis, maintaining the perfect temperature to infuse the wax into the base.

BOOT FITTING The first “step” is onto the “Boot Doc” which does 3-D imaging and measuring of the foot to the millimeter. The next “step” is onto the “Podo Scope” which measures weight distribution, arch height, and dorsal flexion (foot flexibility). Then they test shell fit with no liner to see how the shell matches the foot. Once the data is gathered, they work on the stock liner or build a custom liner for the boot. After the liner comes the custom-molded Footbed which is a very technical process on its own merit. Finally, they apply “Posting Material” to support the arch and to support the longevity of the custom fit. Hi-Tech can still be Old School

MONTANA BECAME A STATE IN 1889
THE KENYON NOBLE LUMBER COMPANY HAS BEEN A PILLAR IN SOUTHWESTERN MONTANA COMMUNITIES FOR OVER 130 YEARS! Our journey began in 1882 with the Pray Lumber Mill, established locally and owned by George Flanders. Located at the mouth of Hyalite Canyon, the Pray Lumber Mill was in a prime spot for harvesting Lumber. However, due to the mill being so far out of town, it struggled to sell to locals, especially during the harsh Montana winters. This is where our founder, Squire C. Kenyon, entered the picture. S.C Kenyon moved to Bozeman in 1889. Originally drawn by the gold rush to Montana from Iowa, S.C Kenyon- being a savvy businessman, quickly realized there was something even more valuable than gold in Montana- The growing need for lumber and building supplies!

THE HISTORY OF KENYON NOBLE (CONTINUED)
Having had previous experience in the lumber industry in Iowa, S.C Kenyon started the S.C Kenyon Lumber Company in 1889 in Anaconda, MT. Later that same year, S.C Kenyon relocated his business to Bozeman where he purchased a local lumber mill, Pray Lumber; using his S.C Kenyon Lumber Company as a retail store front for the Lumber Mill. This storefront not only offered the people of Bozeman and surrounding areas more access to the lumber from the mill, but also a wide selection of other building materials, hardware, housewares, and coal. In 1892, with the business growing, S.C Kenyon decided to partner with long time Pray Lumber employee Thomas E. Noble. nI 1906 they incorporated the company as the Kenyon Noble Lumber Company we know today. Years later in 1929, after S.C Kenyon’s passing, his partner T.E Noble took over as co-president with S.C Kenyon’s son, Carlisle Kenyon. Then, in 1933, Carlisle took over the family business as sole president of the Kenyon Noble Lumber Company. Carlisle had been a prominent worker in his father’s lumber yards since the young age of 13 and knew the company well. After graduating from Drake University, he was more than ready to guide the company through the challenges the world would face in the following years. While S.C Kenyon and T.E Noble established the Kenyon Noble Lumber Company as a vital business in the growing community, it was Carlisle Kenyon, (being so devoted to his father’s business), that was able to sustain the company’s growth and lead it to flourish during difficult times. Carlisle’s reputation was even once revered in a local paper, stating that “(I)f a person were able to take all the

THE HISTORY OF KENYON NOBLE (CONTINUED)
With an increase in major projects and the prediction of the Gallatin Valley’s development west toward Belgrade, Kenyon Noble expanded their services to offer more products and an even greater selection to their local contractors and customers. Bozeman Brick Block & Tile was founded in 1974, and Kenyon Noble Truss Plant in 1983, making KNLC the most versatile company in the Southwest Montana trades industry. This helped builders to take their projects from foundations to finishes, with a wider variety of products and services that assisted in the growth of Belgrade. Along with Kenyon Noble’s growth, so too did the Ogle family. Where, from a young age were brothers William Jr and Rick grew up within the company working for their father, just as Carlisle Kenyon had done with his father. After graduating from Bozeman Highschool, the brothers went on to pursue higher education; William Jr, who, after graduating from Stanford University, joined the army corps of engineers and spent several years abroad. Rick, who, after graduating from Colorado University, went on to play in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions. After several years away from home the brothers returned to the company and town that had seen them grow from young boys in the lumber yard to men ready to guide the company into the next generation. In 1978, the brothers William Jr & Rick Ogle took over the business operations from their father, and continued his legacy. Leading the company through its rapid growth from the early 80’s to current day. The brothers also headed the process of the Kenyon Noble Lumber Company rebranding and logo creation in 1996.

CULINARY CREATIONS
chef ’s ta ble NOTHING IS MORE LUXURIOUS THAN A WEEKEND MORNING DOING WHATEVER YOU WANT. Except that followed by Urban Kitchen’s “Rock n’ Roll Brunch”. Call your friends, pull out your bell-bottoms, strap on your air guitar, and get ready to dazzle them with this rare gem find. After working and eating in the most epic food cities on earth, UK’s owner’s Joe and Meg Romano would spend their days off exploring restaurants, not only because of the world-class culinary offerings but because the eatery had an atmosphere that somehow made the food taste even better. What they quickly realized about Bozeman was that this town loves food, knows real Rock N’ Roll, and is not afraid to dress up. Enter the Rock N Roll Brunch. Urban Kitchen is already known for food that delivers commonplace items taken quite seriously. Homemade English muffins and cheddar chive buttermilk biscuits yes, they even hand grate the butter. Step into The Rock n’ Roll brunch and you quickly realize - The Romanos do nothing halfway. With a wow-in-a-glass attitude, you’ll find Bottomless Mimosas and the “The Notorious Biggie” - a 24 ounce House Bloody Mary which includes: fried chicken, poached shrimp, pepperoncini, and a jalapeno meat stick. When asked if all of that was ‘in’ the Bloody Mary? Joe makes a hand gesture that looks something like a small mountain and says “Yes, it’s a pretty big deal.” Thousands of miles away from Broadway, in a normal year, Bozeman was hungry for a theatrical event right here in town. Every Saturday and Sunday Urban Kitchen delivers all of the elements that maintain their already delicious and generous portions: Drum roll, please… A perfect and timeless playlist, themed menu items like “The Skinny Elvis” and bedazzled servers decked out with teased hair and platform shoes. Music means something different to everyone; this brunch sensation serves it all up from playlist to plate in a unique and lively way which, YES, actually makes the food taste better.
