Making a Masterpiece CELEBRATING ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER'S 60TH ANNIVERSARY A TRUE MASTERPIECE IS KNOWN FOR ITS LEGACY. This spring, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater celebrates its 60th season of making masterpieces. The John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. is hosting performances including Alvin Ailey’s must-see American production, Revelations. According to The Kennedy Center description, “Now more than ever, the world needs the power of dance to bring people together and connect us all by our common humanity. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater continues to push the art form into fascinating new territory while still honoring signature classics like Ailey’s masterpiece of hope and redemption, Revelations.” Premieres this season include Rennie Harris’ Lazarus; Ronald K. Brown, the 2018 Dance Magazine Award recipient;

The Kennedy Center lauds Program A by saying, “In Lazarus, the Company’s first two-act ballet, acclaimed hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris is inspired by the life and legacy of Mr. Ailey. Co-commissioned by the Kennedy Center, Lazarus connects past and present as a powerful work that addresses the racial inequities America faced when Mr. Ailey founded the company in 1958 and still faces today.” Program B will feature Kairos, The Call, Revelations and Robert Battle’s Juba on Feb. 6 and 10. The Kennedy Center describes Program B with the following: “Ronald K. Brown’s The Call is a joyous mix of modern and African dance that fits the Ailey dancers perfectly, and fail to inspire. His seventh work for the Company—set to recordings by Yo-Yo Ma, Mary Lou Williams and Asase Yaa Entertainment Group—promises to once again rouse audiences with Brown’s infectious call for harmony and hope. Ailey is the first American company to perform Kairos by British iconoclast Wayne McGregor, whose inventive contemporary ballet is played out to Max Richter’s reimagining of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Like McGregor’s wildly popular Chroma, Kairos uses walls to create a starkly dramatic onstage world—the perfect setting for his sinuous, angular movement. Artistic Director Robert Battle’s Juba, his first creation for Ailey, is a modern-day “Rite of Spring” with an abstract twist—an electrifying thrill ride through ritual and folk tradition. Often times, the dentist can be a source of anxiety for children (and adults), but Dr. “Scott” Lawrence and Dr. Jen-Fan Weng of the Pediatric Dental Specialists hope to provide a positive experience for young patients. “Our practice is different from the typical practice because we are not as high-volume. We try to give time to the patients and their parents to give them enough time to answer questions and feel comfortable,” Dr. Scott says. “That is really our niche because people want the extra time. We have one open bay for treatments, and parents are welcome to come back and children are able to come back and roam around to see what we do.” Dr. Scott does mostly comprehensive orthodontics for growing individuals, while Dr. Weng does restorative care for patients. Monique is the owner of Holland Custom Designs – Decorating Den Interiors. She designs for clients in Washington D.C., Prince George’s County and surrounding areas. Not only does she design a room or interior space, she also creates a masterpiece for her clients. “I spend 15 minutes on the phone to see what a customer is actually seeking. I walk them through my process, explain my services, and discuss what rooms, what color schemes they have in mind and who will be involved in the design process,” Monique says. “The first visit is a complimentary visit around an hour and a half. We take a 20-minute tour of the home and the rooms they hope to decorate. I ask anyone who is going to be a part of the process to be there. I make sure prior to the appointment that expectations are set and that everyone is aware of what I will be doing.” Many people reach out to a designer to create a vision for them but are unsure of what their style is or how to go about obtaining that look. Monique will bring photos and design ideas for people to peruse to gain an idea of what they really want including colors, patterns, and likes and dislikes. “Many people don’t know what their style is. I also bring photos for people to look at. I hope to get an understanding of what they want and hope for so that I am armed with the information that I need to create a beautiful design without any confusion or missed expectations,” Monique says.

CHEF TIMOTHY DEAN HAS RETURNED TO THE PLACE HE GREW UP TO CREATE A BOUTIQUE, CHEF-DRIVEN RESTAURANT WITH UNIQUE, FRESH, SEASONAL PRODUCTS. “I grew up in Clinton, Maryland, and as many restaurants as there are in Prince George’s County, they all seem the same. There are no chef-driven restaurants in the area and no Michelin Star restaurants in Maryland at this time. If people want to eat at a Michelin Star restaurant, they have to go into D.C.,” Timothy says. Timothy looked at many locations for his newest fine dining establishment and finally decided on a beautiful space in Bowie that fits his concept. “It is American-French cuisine, and we are trying to cater to those who appreciate fine food, wine and Champagne in a great atmosphere.” Timothy Dean restaurant in Bowie opened on the night before Thanksgiving with a limited menu. The first full brunch was held in December. Brunch is a la carte as Timothy believes each dish should be a la minute, prepared to order, to keep the excitement high. Brunch is served on Sundays only at 10 a.m. Dinner is served Tuesday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Timothy hopes to see his restaurant earn a Michelin Star one day especially for the residents and community members of Bowie and Prince George’s County. “I built this restaurant for the people of Prince George’s County. I didn’t build this for myself. It is time that we put these chain restaurants on notice. We don’t need to settle for chain food when we can have chef-driven, openkitchen concept restaurants,” he says. “We don’t have to settle for typical or mundane. I believe that people shouldn’t have to drive to Washington D.C. or Annapolis to get top cuisine. I am planning to focus on Prince George’s County because we deserve this kind of food.” The ambiance and decor are inspired by the South of France. The atmosphere is warm like the French Riviera. The Tiffany Blue color scheme is inviting and welcomes people to come in and eat. Some of the menu items include dry-aged rib-eye, muscles and Chilean sea bass. There is also a full bar menu to enjoy with your meal. Along with crafting exquisite meals, Timothy will be hosting cooking classes and wine dinners as an educational component to get people interested in creating the perfect dish. After 30 years in the culinary industry, he knows it’s all about sharing his vision with the world and creating delicious food with high-quality products. He has studied under Michelin Star chefs including JeanLouis Palladin and is also an alum of Top Chef. And more important than just skill or style, Timothy believes you should be cooking with love. “Grandma and Mom were chefs in their own way; they cooked from their heart—that’s why it was so amazing, and that’s why they call it soul food.” 6133 High Bridge Road, Bowie, 301.262.0315
