CHILDREN'S NATIONAL HEALTH NEW FACILITY UNDERWAY IN PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY The Children's National Health System is building a 60,000-square-foot regional outpatient facility in the Woodmore Towne Center. The official groundbreaking ceremony occurred in December 2017. The new outpatient and surgery center will give residents access to top-notch pediatric care with both specialty medical and surgical care. The expansive center will also give more convenient access to infusions, transfusions, MRIs and outpatient surgery. Once you have taken your fill of all the gallery has to show you may want to pick up a book about collecting art or books illustrated by the gallery’s artists. Everything inside the gallery is available for sale to lovers of art. Jacqueline Thompson and her husband, Derrick, decided to open the gallery in Bowie after realizing that there was not enough African-American art being showcased in the area. “We have everything from originals, clays, lithographs and serigraphs. We have pieces for the art novice to the established collector,” Jacqueline says. The gallery does four major exhibits a year in which artists can come in, showcase their work and interact with patrons. If an artist is interested in displaying their work with Overdue Recognition, they can reach out to Jacqueline, the curator, for a specific set of guidelines or use the submissions link on the website. Currently, the gallery represents 40 African-American artists. “I am part of the selection process for the gallery. I decide where pieces hang and how they are arranged. I am responsible for all of the marketing that comes with the gallery,” Jacqueline says. Derrick handles all the custom framing. Each painting inside the gallery is framed. As an expert in conservation framing, he can properly preserve art so that it will stay pristine and hold its value. Overdue Recognition Art Gallery has received a positive reception in the area through social media and the word of mouth. “We like to say, ‘We want to be the first

TRULY LIVES UP TO ITS NAME. Local consigners can bring new or gently used highend items to be sold to new owners who will find the beauty in a stunning designer dress or accessory rather than tossing them out with the trash. Owner Briana Printy calls it the “ultimate recycling.” She accepts women’s clothing sizes 0 to 3x, jewelry, designer handbags, accessories, formal wear in the spring and the fall, furniture and housewares. “I grew up riding horses, and my mom wouldn’t let me wear my Jordache jeans to the barn. I started going to thrift stores to find cool jeans that I could wear to the barn without worrying about ruining them or paying such high prices and then not being able to wear them when I was a teenager,” Briana says. Eye of the Beholder opened in 2012 in a smaller location on Route 3. “I was training horses for most of my career. I had broken bones and had tons of injuries from that. I had been considering opening my own shop for a long time. I said finally, ‘You know what? I can do this,’” Briana says. After four successful years, they moved the shop into a bigger location. Forty percent of the items in the store are brand-new, some with tags, and the rest are gently used. The items that don’t sell after a certain time frame are donated to reputable charities. Excellent customer service is one of the reasons that Eye of the Beholder has had such great success as a local business. The shop offers discounts to military, teachers, college students and consigners. “I am a huge supporter of small businesses. I think we need to go back to the mom-and-pop stores and support our locals,” Briana says.

Expertly trained staff show you how to create an entire outfit. Excellent customer service is to put together an outfit from head to toe so a customer can envision what they are wearing.” The idea to design and sell high-end men’s fashion was formed back in 2008. Julius and Alain created the brand together. “Quality men’s fashion was lacking in the United States. Over the years, we [had] thought of bringing quality to the market at an affordable price,” Julius says. “We wanted fashion for the blue-collar worker or the man who wanted fashion yet did not want to pay the high-end prices.” In 2010, the plans came together, and the business partners began their company out of Julius’ home in Bowie. In September 2013, they opened their first location in Silver Spring, Maryland. Since then, they have opened locations in luxury shopping centers in Potomac Mill, Atlanta and Paris. “Appearance is important. You look good and feel happy with the way you present yourself to the world. We will help with that,” Julius says.

SOME PEOPLE FIND THEIR CALLING WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG. Some people decide to learn a skill and perfect it over time. Derwin Scott just wanted to hang unique art and décor in his new home and in the process, he found his calling. “It started about two and a half years ago. I couldn’t find any artwork that I liked to hang on the walls of my new place. There was nothing online or in any stores to match my decor. So I went to Michaels, bought my own canvas and began to experiment,” he says. Although Derwin, artist and founder of DSD Paintings, began his journey as an artist as a hobby he, realized quickly that he could turn it into a profession. He began to experiment with textures, paints, different styles, color and materials. His art is all self-taught through trial and error. Derwin received a lot of positive feedback online and on social media platforms. Many people felt just like he did; they wanted something different. “I really wanted to give people, my clients, the option to choose," he says. "They can choose their own colors, textures and the decor that they want. My clients don’t have to deal with the same issues I went through.” Not only does Derwin create unique, inspiring artwork to hang on your wall, he also decorates floors, furniture, cabinets, coffee tables, dining tables, headboards and more. Since he began his foray into art, his business has grown with media coverage and exposure to celebrities that have taken an interest in his work. “That’s the funny part. I had never been into art before I moved. I had no clue that I could do it or what would come of it. It was an opportunity that I was going for. Previously, I had worked on assembling telecommunication boards for over five years. Then, through art, I found my calling.” Derwin's motto—and the name of his business—is “Doing Something Different.” He doesn’t want to be compared to other artists or conform to specific art trends. With his motto in mind, Derwin puts his clients' vision into play.

“The creating process alone is what makes me stand apart from other artists and designers," he says. "I give my clients the options to choose colors, to have textures and to let them have a part in the creative process instead of just giving them what I envision without their input.” Along with his unique choices of canvas, Derwin also incorporates the use of texture in his paintings. With rocks, sand and other materials, the artwork on the walls becomes a part of the room that you can see and touch. Derwin has been painting full-time for two years and has high hopes for the future. “It is the best decision I could have made. I hope that people see my work and see originality. "People remember the way it makes you feel, the colors, the space, and with architecture, you only get to see the outside. I went into interior design so that I could see the full visions come to fruition." 28

Some people decide to start renovating one small space to see how it turns out. Once they see the successful results, they decide to have StudioHue renovate other rooms and spaces. Often times people are stuck on a certain room and want an expert opinion to encourage them in their own ideas. “I have learned that my first instinct is always the best. You can always refine your ideas, but going with your original idea is the best direction,” Hubert says. For this bright, open apartment with two lofts, Hubert and StudioHue redid the entire space both up and down. Previously, the kitchen was walled off completely. The kitchen was then renovated entirely with high-end appliances and was opened up to maximize the space and beauty. They installed a brand-new staircase leading up

to the newly built second loft library and guest area. They changed the floors, using different shades of light and dark to create depth. On the other side of the open space is another staircase that leads up to a home office. “There is a large arched window in the kitchen to let in a lot of light. We opened up both ends of the kitchen in order to allow the light to come from all the windows and create a lighter space,” Hubert says.

Hubert’s passion is to work with a client to bring a vision to life. “As I walk away from a space, I would like to have a client who contributes and works with me in order to create the space they want to see.
