TWELVE YEARS AGO BRIAN WESTBROOK PURCHASED A HORSE FARM IN UPPER MARLBORO. Brian, along with his wife, Abby, operated the 50-acre farm and premier boarding facility, raising their own horses and caring for boarding horses. Then, last October, after 11 years running the flourishing horse farm, Brian felt inspired to give back to the community that had helped him so much as a young man. “I felt called to help the young people in the community and decided to change the entire business model. We ended our boarding services and decided to use the farm to start the Brian Westbrook Foundation,” he says. The mission of the foundation is to give back to young people. These young members of the community will be taught how to succeed with practical knowledge and education to set and achieve goals. “We want to teach our youth how to be motivated, how to be responsible and how to do well at your job. We need to build our children up and fill them with knowledge, power and education,” he says. "We have to unlock their imagination, unlock their motivation and make them feel empowered.” The goal is to have the Brian Westbrook Foundation fully operational by early 2019. When the youth in the community come to the horse farm, they will be able to take part in the daily operations and see all of the steps it takes to keep a large farm running smoothly. This is one way to show young people the type of hard work it takes to run a business and how they can make a mark on their community. The key tenant of these programs is to provide an explanation of success and the understanding that becoming wealthy is not the only definition of being successful. According to Brian, it is important to teach young people the value of work. “We would like to help reprogram our youth to understand that victory is not just having money. We must give our kids better goals and help them achieve these goals to excel within our community, becoming business owners, professionals and leaders in Bowie, Upper Marlboro and Crofton areas," he says.

One of the programs Brian hopes to run is connecting youth with career professionals in the area. Bankers, carpenters, mechanics, upper management, real estate agents, local business owners and those from a variety of professions will come to the farm to share their stories of how they started in their careers and how they made it to their current position. Brian hopes that some of these jobs may be of interest to the kids. “Maybe one of the young people is interested in carpentry; they will have now met someone in that field, and we have the opportunity to connect them with a professional," he says. "This could lead to job possibilities and a new path. I want to show our children this is how you reach this goal. I want to bring in a successful person and say, 'Look to this person to see how they achieved these goals.'" When Brian, a former NFL player for the Philadelphia Eagles, originally bought the farm, it was 25 acres. Later on, he purchased a neighboring property with an additional 25 acres. Today, the farm is a total of 50 acres with two homes, three brand-new barns, indoor and outdoor riding arenas with lights, new sheds and a pond. The entire property was redone with oak board fencing. Brian and his wife spent a lot of time, energy and money turning the farm into a top boarding facility in the area. “I didn’t really grow up around horses, but I’ve always loved horses and all animals. When I was playing football in Philadelphia, it could be stressful so I came to see a friend in Upper Marlboro and we visited a farm. They asked if we wanted to go on a trail ride, and they brought out this beautiful Palomino horse,” he says. “When I got on the horse, it took off galloping full-speed. After I was able to slow down and calm down, we went on a two-hour trail ride and it was the most peaceful time I had ever had. When I left that trail ride I knew immediately that I wanted to buy a horse farm. I called a realtor, and she found the farm for me right away.” Brian went to the farm every single day for four months to learn the daily operations and how to run the farm. “I learned how to mow the grass. I learned how to feed and care for the horses. I learned how to give first aid," Brian says. "The owners at the time showed me everything that I needed to do.” Just as he learned on the farm, Brian hopes to teach the kids in his programs with hands-on training. ”There are some cases where kids are on the path that they want to be on, and we can encourage them. Other kids may need more guidance, and we will be there for them as well.” By bringing local young people and their families to the farm, Brian hopes to expose them to a different view. Although they may live nearby, many people have never ridden a horse before or spent time in a farm setting. Brian hopes to extend that experience to the children in the program as well as teach them the

People love to stop and talk with you and pet the dog. Nala also loves to go out and see people. HOW OLD IS NALA? WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET HER? She is about 6 years old. I rescued her about 5 years ago when she was a year old. My daughter worked at a veterinary office. Someone found Nala tied up in a basketball court and brought her into the office to see if they could find the owner or someone to adopt her. She is the best dog in the world. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE CONSIDERING ADOPTING A DOG? Yes, definitely go for it. You should rescue or adopt a dog if you can. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU AND NALA DO TOGETHER? We like to take dog walks. I take her out all the time. She loves to go to the park and the farm. When we see the animals she loves to sniff the pigs and run around. I like to make sure she gets out a lot. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ATTRIBUTE ABOUT YOUR DOG? She is full of love. You could be in the worst mood, and all she wants to do is kiss you and make you happy. She is truly man’s best friend.

We believe he is a Labrador and boxer mix, but we don’t know his true breed. HOW DID MAJOR COME TO BE PART OF YOUR FAMILY? I found him online. The lady who had him brought him to Maryland from South Carolina for us. We had looked at a dog at a shelter, but he had already been adopted. WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU LIKE TO DO TOGETHER? Major and I take long walks together. We always play fetch together and go to the dog park. I took him to a Dog Fest in Charles County. The dog festival had obstacle courses. It was all about dogs. There were vendors there, a pulling competition, a dog show. There were so many activities to choose from. Major enjoyed himself. He is happy and loves to be around people and other dogs. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR DOG? His energy. He is very energetic when it is time to go. He can also be chill but loves to play. CAN YOU TELL ME A FUNNY STORY ABOUT YOUR PUP? One morning, we let him out in the backyard to use the bathroom. We don’t have a fence so we attach him to a lead. The stake that the lead attached to broke and when we found him he was a few yards away playing with some of the neighbors’ kids. The second time the stake broke, Major started chasing a Metro Access bus down the street, and he is really fast. I got a treat, and he came right back. He will do anything for a treat. 22
