F IS FOR “FOODIE,” A PERSON WITH A PARTICULAR INTEREST IN FOOD. Someone who’s always up for trying new places and has a refined but adventurous palate. And this month at Bowie Lifestyle, we’re all about feasting with foodies as we just scratch the surface of all the fine eats and drinks Bowie has to offer. The dog days of summer brought us ice cream, refreshing salads and cocktails enjoyed by the pool as we celebrated the Fourth of July, vacations and abundant sunshine. But the autumnal days of October bring us chili cooking on the stove, seasonal fruits and veggies and pumpkin spice, well, pretty much everything, as we celebrate football season, some warm-weather relief and shorter days moving toward the end of the year. Whether you consider yourself a foodie, a gourmet, an epicure or just an average eater; whether you’re into nachos at a game, craft beer at your

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY STATE’S ATTORNEY WINS DEMOCRATIC PARTY NOMINATION Angela Alsobrooks, who held the position of Prince George’s County State’s Attorney, has won the Democratic Party nomination for county executive. Her success has been met with encouragement and praise. Alsobrooks had heavy competition, but in a significantly democratic county, this win is a huge triumph. If Alsobrooks wins in November, she would be the first female county executive in Prince George’s County.

ROAD TRIP (CON TI N U ED)

THE CLASSIC ROAD TRIP IS ALL ABOUT CREATING MEMORIES AND SAVORING THE JOURNEY. Most people pile in the car with snacks and a vague plan in mind. That is one way to do it. Who says a road trip has to last a week and be filled with fast-food pit stops and obscure tourist attractions? Why not try a remarkable destination right in your own backyard? National Harbor is a hot spot of delicious restaurants and gorgeous sights. Located just south of Washington, D.C., near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, this is one road trip destination you don’t want to miss. Firstly, no road trip is complete without food, food and more food. If you have seafood on the brain, you can make a reservation at Fish by José Andrés, which overlooks the Potomac and serves cuisine that showcases the best that Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay have to offer. For a more casual vibe, The Walrus Oyster & Ale House offers the largest selection of East Coast oysters with 12 bivalves at the shucking bar. Choose from 14 local tap beers, tap wines or frozen drinks to quench your thirst. For classic steaks and American cuisines, it may be difficult to choose just one restaurant. The Voltaggio Brothers were featured on Bravo’s Emmy Award-winning season of Top Chef. Their contemporary Voltaggio Brothers Steak House draws inspiration from their Maryland roots with entrees that will please your palate and leave you feeling proud to be in Maryland. McCormick & Schmick’s offers an exquisite culinary experience with a view and a menu that will delight even the most discerning of foodies. Redstone American Grill features a wood-burning rotisserie and open-flame grill. Stop by on your road trip for lunch or dinner or both! When you are in the mood for authentic Mexican cuisine, look no further than Rosa Mexicano, which uses traditional cooking techniques. There is also Grace’s Mandarin, a sensational fusion of Asian flavors that also offers cocktails, an array of wines and an expansive selection of sakes. Even though they aren’t that far from home, you may just have to stay several nights to sample the dishes from every restaurant. While enjoying your road trip destination, you can book a room at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center and take a day to enjoy some peace and quiet at Relâche Spa & Salon. Enjoy a massage, manicures and pedicures, or a facial in between trying every single restaurant that you can fit into your time at National Harbor. When you are done relaxing and eating, make sure to take a stroll around National Harbor before you leave. The Capital Wheel will give you a bird’s-eye view before it’s time to make the trip back. Luckily, if you are heading back to Bowie you won’t have far to go.

THE HEALTH FOOD STORE FOR YOUR PETS

IN 2018, PEOPLE ARE VERY AWARE OF WHAT FOODS THEY CONSUME, HOW THEY FUEL THEIR BODIES AND WHAT THEY FEED THEIR FAMILIES. What about our furry family members? Crunchies Natural Pet Foods takes a different path when it comes to feeding pets. They want to help pets live their best life with natural foods. Julia Brewer, owner and founder of Crunchies, turned to natural food solutions in 1994 when her cat became very ill. The prescription food ordered by the vet was not helping. “I went to a holistic vet, and she said that my cat needed to be on a food that would help him build his immune system,” Julia says. Julia found a natural pet food distributor in Baltimore, Maryland. Her original vet was so impressed by the improvement in her cat that he asked if she could pick up natural pet food for another sick animal. She began buying food from the distributor for other sick animals as well as the pets of friends and families. Through the word of mouth, Crunchies was born. “People are interested in feeding their pets natural foods and taking care of their health in the same way that we take care of our health,” Julia says. Everything in the store is all natural including treats, supplements, kibble, and canned and raw foods. There are no chemicals, no added sugars, no preservatives and no byproducts. It is all real meat, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Crunchies investigates every pet food line that it sells. They want to know who manufactures it, where it is made, the exact recipe and the individual ingredients in the food. “It makes a difference in their lifestyle, their energy, and their skin and coat appearance. Real meat and real food creates gut health and healthy diet habits.”

of flavors. There is vibrant chard, fennel bulbs and fronds, roasted pistachios, forbidden black rice and brown rice. To go with this salad is a pomegranate molasses cinnamon dressing. It is the kind of dish that you can really enjoy and savor because it is so flavorful and textured. I also love a roasted squash from a local farmers’ market and picking ones that are sweet and supple. I will cover them with some pink salt and black pepper and serve them with a kale-based pesto. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SERVICES OFFERED BY SIMPLE VEGAN? We offer weekly meal preparation for new vegans and vegan-curious people. We also do cooking demonstrations and interactive cooking parties. I will show the party guests how to take a conventional meal and turn it into a vegan meal. Another service that is offered is boutique catering which is small, intimate, unique catering tailored to a specific event. I want to ensure the food complements and supports their event and what is going on that day specifically. WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE SOME COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS THAT PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT BEING VEGAN OR TRYING VEGAN MEALS? I think that some misconceptions that people hold are that it is cardboard, it is boring food and that there is not enough protein. So many people believe that the food is bland and flavorless. People also think you will lose your power and your strength [without animal products]. That definitely is not the case. Another big misconception is that you have to have mock meat or mock cheeses. I don’t use either of those. My dishes are all minimally processed and made from scratch. There are other ways of gaining nourishment without mock animal products. I am here to help people see that there is more than one way to be vegan or eat vegan meals. 202.796.8646, SimpleVegan.com

CHUCK AND STEPHANIE SMITH CHUCK’S WAGON BBQ WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE BARBECUE DISHES? Beef brisket is my favorite because it takes the most skill to prepare and is the most flavorful. After that is is the pulled pork and the ribs. These are Carolina staples. I love to eat them, and I love to make them. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN A RESTAURANT? I have always wanted to have a restaurant. When I was little, my mother would go to culinary school and I would go with her. She would try out her recipes on me. I have always loved cooking and so has my wife, Stephanie. Our first time catering came when we went to a friend’s house and got hired on the spot. Stephanie snuck into the kitchen to make up a barbecue sauce to liven up the food there. Then I was invited to my sister’s barbecue and stuck on the grill. My sister brought her neighbor over and said, “Here is my brother. He’s a caterer.” I hadn’t even done any actual catering at this point. We received some great validation that we were on the right track after catering that party. Chuck’s Wagon BBQ was actually born from that moment. Stephanie and I jumped into a few competitions to see how we were doing. For many years, we were just catering and going to fairs and festivals.

Chuck Smith, Chuck's Wagon BBQ

In 2009, our catering business became larger than we could do without a commercial kitchen. We hadn’t even considered opening a restaurant; we were just looking for a space to do our catering. One Friday night, a woman called and ordered every single thing on the menu. My wife and I were so excited that we got such a large order. The same woman called me on my cellphone the next day to tell me how great the food was. It turns out that she was a food critic for The Washington Post, and she wanted to do a write-up on us. After the story came out, we had people lining up around the block to come in. We opened a location in Upper Marlboro that was unfortunately damaged by the earthquake in 2010. We went back to catering, and in 2014 I snatched up the Bowie location. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? The best part of my job is to satisfy customers and making people happy. In Upper Marlboro, we had a customer from Florida who would visit family about three times a year. Before she left each time, she had to stop at Chuck’s Wagon BBQ before she got on the plane. WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR CUSTOMERS WILL SAY WHEN THEY LEAVE CHUCK’S WAGON BBQ? Word of mouth is everything. I want people to say, “Wow, that food is great” and recommend us to their friends because the food is just that good. Our board says, “Once it’s gone, it’s gone.” I make all the food from scratch and only make enough for the day. Brisket takes 9 to 14 hours in the smoker. You can’t get this anywhere else in the county. I pride myself on our work. The awards on my wall are people’s choice awards from the community. People like what we are doing. We try to provide good food that people want to come back to. 6946 Laurel Bowie Road, Bowie, Maryland, 301.262.1546, CWBBQ.com October 2018 | Bowie Lifestyle

FINANCIAL BUZZ

ARTICLE ALYSON TURNER | PHOTOGRAPHY TYLER GOBLE

REALTOR DARRIN MITCHELL SHARES ADVICE FOR BUILDING WEALTH THROUGH REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS

WEALTH BUILDING THROUGH REAL ESTATE THE IDEA OF BUILDING WEALTH AND GAINING FINANCIAL FREEDOM THROUGH REAL ESTATE CAN SEEM LIKE A MYTH. Darin Mitchell, a realtor with Keller Williams Flagship of Maryland, shares his expertise on this important topic. HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN WEALTH BUILDING? My dad would discuss real estate finances with my brother and me at a young age. He taught us various concepts including leverage (using other people’s money), appreciation (increases in net worth due to an increase in market value), tax advantages (paying less tax on capital gain than one might pay on earned income) and cash flow management (ensuring you have money to invest after all your expenses are paid). 26

Bowie Lifestyle | October 2018

Then he would demonstrate how they applied to home ownership and real estate investing. Today, I use a combination of the knowledge gained from my father and my experience to help my real estate clients understand how to make the right financial decisions and build wealth through real estate. HOW CAN SOMEONE BECOME SAVVIER ABOUT THEIR OWN FINANCES? Knowledge is power. Take a course on finances or attend local meetup groups that discuss real estate investing. Read books and magazines about real estate investing. Most good real estate books will teach about stocks and bonds because they compare and contrast real estate investments to them. More importantly, they address the prerequisites to wealth building: good credit, debt-to-equity ratio, etcetera. My final solution is to find a mentor, an accountability partner or someone who will help them become more knowledgeable. HOW SHOULD ONE START BUILDING WEALTH? Focus on building multiple streams of income. The most common types of income are earned, portfolio and passive income. Most people who are beginning to build wealth are already earning “earned” income (the paycheck your employer pays you for working in their business). To maximize this opportunity to build wealth, people need to focus on their income and expenses by establishing a budget. The great news is most of the homeowners in America use this type of income to buy their first homes. Portfolio income is income from investments like stocks in the form of dividends. A lot of my real estate clients invest in real estate investment trusts that pay them periodic dividends. They should take those dividends and reinvest them. You also can make portfolio income by selling real estate at a higher market price than you originally paid for it. Lastly, passive income is income you make while you are sleeping. My real estate clients generate this income type by renting properties. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO A PERSON STRUGGLING TO TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR OWN WEALTH? First, set a plan and develop good investing habits. Wealthy people buy assets that provide them income. People who are becoming wealthy take control and use good cash flow management skills to acquire assets like real estate that pay them passive and portfolio income. The end result often times is an increase in their net worth (total assets less all liabilities).
