In December of 1991, the best video game in history was released, Super Tecmo Bowl. While there had been many football game predecessors, for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Tecmo Bowl was the first game to have every NFL team and use the real player’s names. Since this was pre-internet era, I honestly have no idea how excitement was built for its release, but at age fourteen, I was obsessed with getting this game. The house I grew up in was perfectly sized for our family, but certainly not considered large. This meant that there were only so many places my parents could hide presents, leading up to Christmas. As we grew older, the task of hiding gifts became more and more challenging for my folks. As the countdown to Christmas grew closer in 1991, I had a hunch that my parents had successfully secured Super Tecmo Bowl for me. I looked in all the usual hiding spots at home but to no avail. Finally, I found the treasure. Christmas was still two weeks away, and all I could think about was trampling defenders with Chiefs running back, Christian Okoye. I always considered myself an honest child, but one day, my curiosity got the best of me. The plan was simple; I would fake being sick on a school day so that I could play Super Tecmo Bowl while my parents were at work. The morning gameday arrived, I bamboozled my mom with some bellyaching in the morning. I’m sure a fake thermometer reading was also incorporated, but after thirty-two years, the details are hazy. The next step, opening the game’s packaging, required a bit more skill. I took a razor blade and carefully cut the cellophane in a way that I could slide the game out. That day, I played Super Tecmo Bowl for eight consecutive hours, then meticulously placed the game back in the packaging, taping the cellophane so that no trace of tampering was evident. I could have won an Oscar for my performance on Christmas morning. After ten years or so had passed, I did finally muster up the guts to tell my folks what I had done. Some may call my actions egregious, but I simply chalk it up to the magic of Christmas. We hope nothing but the best for you and your family this holiday season! Sincerely,

IN A RHYTHM Since Anna Morsett was a toddler surrounded by toy musical instruments, music has played (quite literally) a significant role in her life. As a kid growing up in the Pacific Northwest, she tinkered with her mom’s trumpet and her dad’s guitar, and she sang in the school choir. For her 12th birthday, which is two days apart from her dad’s, the two picked out an electric guitar. “We chose it together,” Anna says, “but it was really just mine. I started playing it, and that was the beginning of leaning into music. It felt like solace from the melodrama of my teenage years.” Anna’s music taste was largely inspired by the grunge bands of Seattle and local alternative radio stations like 107.7 The End. From recording the station’s top 10 countdowns on a cassette tape (hits from Bush, Soundgarden and Nirvana) to poring over a gifted book about Jimi Hendrix, she found herself captivated by the sounds of alt and indie rock, and motivated to pursue a music career. It started slowly—in college, she’d anxiously play open mic nights, powered by nerves as she rushed through songs. “I was really scared, but also really driven,” Anna says. “I knew that was the way forward, even though it was challenging.” Following a move to New York City, she felt increasingly comfortable playing small shows with friends and traveling as a guitar tech

for various bands. It was in New York where she formed her own band The Still Tide, but it was a happenstance move to Denver 10 years ago that led her down a path she longed for. “I was hired to play with Jesse Elliott’s band called These United States,” Anna recalls. “After a six-month tour, he ended up in Denver. On a whim, I visited and was only supposed to be here for a month-long writing retreat. Then I just fell in love with the beautiful, supportive music community. I said, ‘Oh my God, this is everything I wanted.’” Alongside her The Still Tide bandmates, Mark Anderson (drums); Jess Parsons (keys and vocals); Miles Eichner (lead guitar) and Daniel Vollmar (bass), Anna became enamored with Colorado’s music scene. They’ve played shows all over Denver, from The Hi-Dive and the Bluebird Theater to the Gothic Theatre and Globe Hall, and at numerous venues in Colorado Springs and Fort Collins. Crowds connect with Anna’s lyrics and vocals, and The Still Tide’s sound — hauntingly powerful melodies that blend nostalgia with hopeful longing. Unlike in New York, Anna finds that when people tell her they’ll come to a show, they actually come. The support she’s felt is unlike anything she had before. “So much of the reason for playing shows is to connect with people. In Denver, suddenly something clicked.” The Still Tide has released six records and toured the country in the decade since Anna relocated to Colorado. She still keeps her guitar tech gigs; a few months ago, she was in Europe with Feist and on the road with Gregory Alan Isakov, tuning guitars and taking care of midshow swaps (sometimes every song can have a different guitar). This month, she's in Asia guitar teching for Canadian band Alvvays. Her personal guitar collection has grown from that first electric guitar to many, including a Gretsch baritone, two Epiphone Wilshires and a rubber bridge Fender Telecaster she loves for its cool, low sound. Much like her band’s name implies, Anna remains comforted by what she knows, yet intrigued by what could happen as her career continues to evolve. “I love that brief period when the tides change and there's this slack water,” she says. “Tension between the before and after. CHEF HOSEA’S ROAST PREP AND COOKING TIPS: Allow your roast to temper by sitting at room temperature for about two hours before cooking. Season outside of roast liberally with salt, pepper, herbs, garlic and any other blend of spices and seasonings you choose. For best results, use a meat thermometer to monitor the cooking. • To achieve a glorious crust, start the oven at 425 degrees for the first 15 minutes of cooking, then turn down to 275 degrees for the remainder of time. • For a medium-rare roast, cook until the center reaches 120 degrees, and then pull out of the oven. • Let rest for 15 minutes before slicing. • Edges of the roast will cook more than the center, so the center will always be more rare and the edges will be more done.

GATHER: • 1.5 lbs Fingerling potatoes • Ice water, set aside for blanching • 1 Tbsp butter • 1 Tbsp olive oil • 1 garlic clove • 1 sprig fresh rosemary • Salt and pepper

GATHER: • 1 bunch parsley, stems removed • 1 bunch cilantro, stems removed • 1 clove fresh garlic • 4 Tbsp EVOO • 2 tsp lemon juice • Cracked black pepper • Kosher salt DIRECTIONS 1. Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until well combined. Check seasoning and adjust to taste. Serve alongside steak.

DIRECTIONS 1. Boil potatoes in salted water until al dente. 2. Cool in ice water and keep cold until ready to use. Cut potatoes in half. 3. Heat butter and olive oil in a cast-iron or heavy-duty pan. 4. Place potatoes cut side down in the pan. Cook over medium-high heat until potatoes are golden brown. 5. Add garlic and rosemary, and season with salt and pepper. Toss around the pan until the garlic just starts to brown. Serve.

When Bistro Vendôme announced it was leaving its longtime home in Larimer Square after nearly two decades, people were understandably panicked. Would they forever lose their favorite omelet and fresh-baked pastries? But after saying a brief au revoir at New Year’s Day brunch, Bistro reopened in Park Hill in February, debuting a fresh menu and a fresh look. Chef/owner Jennifer Jasinski and executive chef Jeremy Wolgamott created new items for brunch, like the pillowy souffle pancakes with blackberry syrup and creamy lobster bisque—all best washed down with a white cranberry or blood orange mimosa. Moody velvet banquettes, stenciled floors and stunning, drop-your-lemon-crêpeworthy wallpaper, add to the wow factor and have devoted customers cheersing to another 20 years.

Beautifully melding both style and substance, The Bindery is a decidedly chic LoHi brunch destination whose food might taste even better than it looks. (And it all looks pretty darn amazing.) Like the hybrid market/restaurants popular in Europe that the restaurant is modeled after, The Bindery combines creative, fine dining dishes with a grab-and-go style bakery that you’ll want to make repeat trips back to. Meaning you have to somehow make your way past the mouthwatering cinnamon rolls and chocolate croissants in the pastry case if you want to linger over duck confit hash and vanilla bean and rum Dutch babies. Chef/owner Linda Hampsten Fox drew inspiration for The Bindery from her daughter Emma, even naming a brunch dish after her. La Emmabella is a nod to one of Emma’s favorite childhood dishes— because yes, this child liked quail eggs in brioche with truffle butter at age six. “I named that dish after her when we opened and she had just left for college,” Linda says. “That way I could hear her name all weekend long—it’s my love letter to her.”
