I have a framed quote from one of my all-time favorite writers, Joan Didion, that sits on my dresser. It’s lengthy, but the essence is she’s urging others not to just pass through life, but “to live in it”—experience it. Her words inspire me daily to participate—to absorb life in all its twists and turns no matter the emotion. It also serves as a reminder of what an inspirational writer she’s been to me. It was her work that first catapulted me into pursuing a passion of my own. I’m excited to share with you that our October issue is dedicated to celebrating women that inspire and empower us. We’re sharing stories of female leaders who are on the up and up, carving their own path in our community and beyond. But this small, hand-curated selection is just the tip of the iceberg. There are hundreds more that you can see outside this magazine in your daily life—family members, teachers, acquaintances and more. Here’s to the women who are shining bright and positively impacting all who cross their paths. Whether that entails meeting and becoming close friends or simply admiring from afar, say by placing a quote inside a picture frame, it goes without saying we can never underestimate the impact we have on one another. opportunity for me to realize it. Art led me into fashion: I took a few art classes in high school and it was my teacher that noticed the attention to clothing details, so she connected me to a fashion club. The more I learned, the more I was hooked. It was also the fashion club that led me to participate in a recycled runway, which gave me a scholarship to the Art Institute of Colorado where I then got a BA in fashion design. During my years in college, I started modeling and it opened so many doors for me. Not only was I introduced to the modeling industry, but I was connected to designers, photographers, makeup artists and so many others.

Dacy Luneburg knows fashion. The model/ designer/artist creates face coverings, clothing and art and is the founder of Dacy Darlette and co-founder of Gyidah. Dacy spent her early years in both Burundi in East Africa and Niger in West Africa. She landed in Colorado during her teen years and studied at Boulder High. While earning a degree in fashion design at the Art Institute of Colorado, she showcased her collection inspired by the goddess Oshun, which landed on Mile High Living TV. Dacy’s eclectic background has profoundly influenced her creativity and ensured the production of unique and exciting pieces with the flavor of Africa.

What would you say influenced you? A few things influenced me; it's really hard to pick one. • The women in my family had a huge influence on me, like my aunt and my grandmother. My aunt introduced me to modeling at a young age because she was traveling as one of the top Burundian models and competing with other African models. I remember watching her on TV and thinking I wanted to be part of whatever that job was. • My grandma loved to look good. You couldn't go shopping and come back without bringing her something. She also loved jewelry and pearls. • I was also very specific with the way my clothes fit, especially in my early teenage years. I would cut them and adjust them anyhow to get them to look how I wanted them to be. • Traveling and seeing different cultures and how that translates into their clothing influenced me immensely. Traveling to West Africa widened my style. I will never have enough of drapes of the bazin, headwraps and colorful prints.

What brought you into fashion? Fashion has always been a passion of mine. Growing up, being a fashion designer was not considered a career worth pursuing—no parent wanted to invest in their child's education in anything art-related. It took time and the right CONTINUED >

Can you tell us about your curated, repurposed, sustainable clothing brand Gyidah that you co-own with Reanne Alise? Gyidah came about when I started working with an old school friend of mine, Reanne. I saw her work as a stylist and immediately knew I wanted to work with her. I had a suit photoshoot that I wanted her to style and it came out beautifully. We both come from a fashion design background, but our styles are different yet blend very well. We decided to create a line that showcases both our work, a line that is exclusive and sustainable. How is this line different from your Dacy Darlette line? Dacy Darlette stems from an African background. It is a line that combines art and fashion with a taste of African royalty.

Ask artist CarolAnn Wachter about her work, and pretty quickly you may not know if you’re talking about life or the art of collaging. The two carry many of the same lessons: “Balance” isn’t always what you expect. It’s okay to not know where something is going. Make the big decision first and the small ones will fall into place. Sometimes, all you can do is take things apart and put them back together again. Time can completely change your perspective. Her North Boulder studio is even a collage of sorts, a collection of others’ work and her own – colorful abstract collages and muted ceramics, patterns for clothing and home goods from Colombia’s Wayuu weavers. “It’s all art, and I want to weave it all together. I’m not this or that, I just make stuff. I’ll think, ‘I have an idea, let me make this and see if anyone wants it.’ But it’s kind of working,” she explains with a laugh. With a background as an observational oil painter and fashion designer, CarolAnn is now exploring those nuances of depth, light, form, space and color in a new way: Richly hued abstract collages. “I’m just playing with composition over and over until my instinct says, ‘That’s it,’” she explains. “There is some kind of balance that is created, even if it’s not what you normally think of balance.” It all starts with color. CarolAnn coats large swaths of paper with colors made from acrylic ink and guache. Then, she starts cutting. From there, it’s a process of adding and subtracting, disassembling and reassembling, and sometimes, simply stepping away.

“That’s what I like about it—not everything has to be completely thought out and known,” she says. “A lot of it gets to be discovered along the way.” She explains that sometimes the collages come together quickly, but more often, like the practice of painting, it takes patience. “You can’t force it, sometimes you have to let it hang around for a long time,” she says. “Sometimes you’re too judgmental about yourself. But if you just put the work away, you might love it in a year. “It’s funny how your perspective changes when you come to things,” she continues. “That’s what’s so awesome about looking at art. You see things differently depending on where you are in life… So it’s good to not be judgmental with yourself and allow things to develop at their own pace.” She jokes that she is an advocate of sorts for collaging, but reiterates its value in modern life, not just as a medium, but as a practice. “There are not many things in life that allow you to do that. It allows you to be completely in the unknown, and just be with your instincts. And it’s okay–you don’t need to know. You don’t have to have answers. WHERE STUDENTS IMPROVE THEIR EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING AND, IN TURN, THEIR ACADEMICS

Brandon Slade had completed graduate school and was employed in the Boulder Valley School District when he began working with students dealing with ADHD, dyslexia and anxiety and depression. Having failed out of Ohio State University with a football scholarship himself, Brandon understood what it was like to struggle academically. It was after working with these students for some time that he created Untapped Learning—a place for middle school, high school and college students to get academic help and develop their executive function skills.

Executive function skills involve planning and organization, and are what Brandon describes as “the CEO of your brain.” Untapped Learning works with students experiencing ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety and/or depression to build routines and get things done. “We see a lot of people who we call ‘the smart and scattered’ … I call them the kids who are gonna cure cancer but can’t find their car keys,” Brandon says. “Super, super, super bright.” Untapped Learning works with students to improve these learnable

skills in three ways: Movement, accountability and mentorship. At their Broomfield location, middle school and high school students start off their sessions by moving. Students can play football, ping pong or Spikeball inside, or take a walk outdoors with their mentor. College students meet with their mentors virtually, so their incorporation of movement is built around their schedules. According to Brandon, movement is the “miracle drug” for improving memory, attention and retention.

Once that is complete, mentors work with their students to plan out their week. Middle and high schoolers meet with their mentor once a week and receive texts or phone calls checking in on their progress throughout, while college students have several sessions per week. “We can really clear up a lot of mental space just by holding our kids accountable. So it’s two pats on the back, one kick in the tail—just loving them up like crazy and then holding them accountable,” Brandon says.

Untapped Learning’s mentors, some of whom previously dedicated their time working for the Boulder Valley School District, are typically in their twenties. They have their own interests—from Dungeons and Dragons to skateboarding—and are matched with students based on personality and learning style. The student-to-mentor relationship becomes increasingly important when it comes to accountability. Brandon says he sees “great results” from students because of the smaller age gap,

as opposed to a larger one involving, say, a student and an older doctor. Untapped Learning works with students year-round, with a summer program that prepares students for the upcoming school year. Students typically stick with Untapped Learning for a semester or a year, and some may come back at another point in their life, like for their first year of college. Pizza has long dominated the conversation, we all scream for ice cream and tacos took over a full-on day of the week. But why on earth aren’t we talking more about dumplings? Many cultures have a version of wrapping up delicious fillings inside a chewy dough, but China is the dumpling capital of the world, so let’s start there. And let’s narrow it down even further, to the crescent-shaped dumplings that have gained a following here in America, packed with stuffings like ginger-laced pork, steamed shrimp with chive and shiitake mushrooms. These types of dumplings take up only a mere corner in the dumpling world, but it’s a very tasty corner, and one we’ll happily explore. Here in Boulder, we’re lucky to have some outstanding dumplings representing this corner, from three restaurants that specialize in traditional Chinese cooking. Here, where to get your fill of the steamy, bursting pockets we should be talking about more.

ZOE MA MA “Ma Ma” is Anna Zoe, and at Zoe Ma Ma she’s cooking the kind of comfort food that she’s fed her son, Edwin, all his life. When the Zoes opened just off Pearl Street more than a decade ago, eschewing the Americanized Chinese food so popular here was a big gamble. Spoiler alert: The gamble paid off. You can’t grab a noodle or rice bowl without starting with an order of dumplings, and we’re partial to Ma Ma’s Potstickers. Described as a “top secret family recipe made with pork, shrimp, garlic, chive and vegetables,” these golden brown, juicy little suckers are downright addictive. Wang cooks up specialties from all over China, from Shanghai to the northern provinces to Yunnan. There are six dumplings on Flower Pepper’s menu: pork and cabbage, garlicky Chinese leek and egg, chicken and shiitake, pork and leek, steamed soup and pork wonton soup. YOUR WEBSITE TOUCHES ON THE IMPORTANCE OF “WORKING WITH YOUR HANDS.” WHY A SPECIFIC FOCUS ON WOODWORKING?

Luke and Allison Johanson were watching TV one night when an episode of the 37-year-old PBS show “The Woodwright’s Shop” came on the screen. The program features Roy Underhill’s woodworking using simple early American hand tools. After scrolling through a list of episodes, Luke clicked on the one titled “Who Wrote the Book of Sloyd?!”

Wood, as opposed to metal, paper, clay or cardboard, has more life to it. Working with wood develops a different dimension of appreciation and respect for nature and all of its beauty. Most kids know what growth rings are on a tree, but here they get to feel how they respond when worked upon in different directions and different ways. The grain, the color, the smell—exciting and inspiring kids through connection with the real world—it’s AMAZING.

An instructor doesn’t assist or work on a student’s work in any capacity. The sense of accomplishment and conclusion is purely from the work of the student.

WORKING WITH YOUR HANDS The episode highlighted a 19th-century Swedish educator and author, Otto Salomon, who advocated for the combination of physical activity with a child’s education. He wrote a book titled “The Teacher’s Handbook of Sloyd,” which guided teachers in implementing crafting into their curriculum. “As we continued to watch, my mind was racing. My dominating thought was, ‘We need this for the children of the world now, more than ever before,’” Luke says. Thus was born the idea for Sloyd Experience. Four years in the making, Luke and Allison have developed a program where elementary and middle school children learn to woodwork. Sloyd Experience welcomes mistakes and encourages perseverance while aiming to build self-reliance, concentration, neatness and a love for labor.

It is incredibly important for children to respect risk at an early age. I believe the only way they can respect it is if they experience it…if they feel it. Furthermore, by entrusting them with this risk, we are empowering them. By no means do we completely eliminate risk, but we do put the risk, and therefore responsibility, in their hands - literally.

WHAT DOES EACH WORKSHOP LOOK LIKE? Sloyd Experience utilizes individual instruction, not classroom instruction. Every student progresses through our curriculum at their own pace. Models are not necessarily finished in one session (in fact, VERY few are). Some of the more complex models can take well over five sessions to complete. One thing that is certain on each of these finished models is that the work is only accomplished by the student.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR THE PROGRAM? We are excited to announce that we are now a “Community Partner” of the Boulder Valley School District. In this capacity, we are able to offer programming as part of the curriculum. Beginning this fall, every second grader at Louisville Elementary School will partake in one Sloyd Experience session per week. Our goal is to continue to add grade levels and schools. We are continuing to work on refining the program so that it can be replicated and we can equip and train educators outside of our community so that the impact of Sloyd Experience is not limited to Boulder.

How she maintains a balanced life: “Boundaries. From a retired ‘yes’ girl, I learned that the balance of my life often starts with saying no occasionally. I’m an advocate for staying on your grind and working until the sun comes up, but it’s only worth something if it’s pushing you forward. I think the same goes for personal relationships and hobbies because it’s easy to drain yourself, even with things you enjoy, when you’re already busy. To me, staying balanced requires listening to myself first. Sometimes that means just getting the work done so I’ll feel better, and other times I try to give myself grace to cancel plans or save it for tomorrow without feeling guilty.”

After a rocky beginning in the fashion industry, Amanda started designing jewelry out of her post-college bedroom in her parents’ house. What started as a creative outlet became the fashion and design career she always dreamed of. In 2022 she launched her second line, Ear Kit; an innovative system of endlessly interchangeable earrings. She’s excited to grow her community and host some Build Your Own Ear Kit pop-ups in Denver and beyond. She has plans to expand her product line and keep innovating in the jewelry space. She loves being able to stretch her creativity on a daily basis and says, “Giving life to the ideas in my brain and getting tangible products into people’s hand (and ears) never gets old.”

An artist in training her entire life, Mariele grew up in Montana, the daughter of a boatbuilder. She believes being an artist isn’t just about producing work—it’s the way you live your life. She loves creating and problem-solving in any medium. She established her first studio in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she created work that reminded her of what it was like to be “young in the mountains.” She now calls the Rocky Mountains home again, where she opened her flagship jewelry store in Denver.

The advice she’d give her younger self: “Don’t live *your* life based on the opinions of other people. Keep your head down and make yourself proud.”

How she finds balance: “I find balance by remembering the creative and driven person that got me to where I am today. I was a bit of a workaholic for a long while because I loved what I did so much. I worked so hard for so long, that at this level of success, I do acknowledge I have deserved the right to slow down a little, step away and enjoy life. Cooking creatively for my family helps me feel creative and productive at the same time. A cutting-edge stylist who creates aesthetically charged sartorial fashion looks that inspire and motivate you to live life boldly, one outfit at a time, Koya has worked as an editorial stylist, fashion director and fashion writer with local and international publications. She is also an advocate for ushering African fashion to a global audience, with her work as an international representative for African fashion brands and designers.

Growing up in Michigan surrounded by nature and loving the outdoors from the start, Brooke’s parents encouraged her, along with her two sisters, into sports and generally steered them outside whenever possible. She golfed in college but eventually started at the University of Michigan as a pediatric surgical nurse, something she’s extremely proud of. Travel nursing brought her to Boulder where she met John, who she started Wild Monkey Bar with. (They are also soon-to-be married!) She’s honored to share her story, which is an example of persisting in the face of uncertain adventure. Brooke likes to say, “After all, we’re all just wild monkeys trying to figure life out!”

What she loves about her role: “I am constantly surrounded by fashion, art and culture. This allows me the opportunity to truly express myself through the art of styling, either through photoshoots or as creative director in enhancing the story through fashion. I get to teach others to express themselves in their truest form and remove any self-imposed limitations that may impede their essence. As an international representative for designers based in Africa and an advocate for African creativity, I get to introduce retailers to my beautiful, colorful and amazing culture through the eyes of the designers that bring it to life!”

What she’s excited about for the future: “Ever since we started Wild Monkey, we’ve dreamed of building a brand that fosters a community around health, fitness and balance. We recently held our first community event with Mūv Chiropractic: Evening yoga in the park. It was better than I had ever imagined. This was a pivotal moment for us (me); it felt like watching your child grow up. Out of our original ideas, I am seeing a more mature brand evolve, and it’s profoundly satisfying to know how much work it’s taken to get to this point. It still seems just as exciting to think about all the unknowns that still lie ahead, a true adventure.”

Claudia Anata Hubiak is a choreographer, director and educator. She is originally from Boulder and holds an MFA in dance from NYU. Claudia founded The Anata Project in 2011 and has created original works for the stage and screen for over a decade. Her choreography has been presented across the nation, from New York to San Francisco. As an educator, Claudia has enjoyed teaching for LINES Ballet and the SF School of the Arts. She founded the Anata Wellness Outreach Program dedicated to bringing dance, meditation and somatic practices to schools. Claudia is delighted to come full circle back to Boulder to support the growth of Boulder Ballet as Executive Director.

Having grown up in the mountains of northern Colorado, Jill had adults in her life who inspired her to fall in love with her backyard. After teaching public school for nine years, in 1995 she founded what is now Wild Bear Nature Center, a nonprofit organization located in the mountains of Boulder County. Since then, she has built a strong organization that has preserved land, annually serves tens of thousands of people of all ages and is now building the highest elevation net zero nature center open year-round.

How she maintains a balanced lifestyle: “As a mom of two young boys and director of a growing organization, I find that I need to really schedule the things that matter - dates with my husband, special time for the kids to connect and time in the studio just for me, to name a few. Prioritizing wellness takes practice!”

What makes her over the moon: “I am beyond excited about creating the net zero nature center at the gateway to 3,000 wild acres to inspire creative exploration of the outdoors. This is a 27-yearold vision and is slated to open its door in late summer 2024.”

Jody Ehlert , Made for Lips, Founder & Co-Owner Growing up in a little town in Nebraska, Jody was raised in a pretty natural lifestyle. She moved to Boulder over 20 years ago; it seemed that people lived this way here, too. She spent time in Costa Rica with her children and remembers it was the first time she saw plastic in the ocean and all over the beaches. She always wanted to start Made for Lips and knew they didn’t need plastic. She needed something that would get the job done but not last forever. The advice Jody would give to her younger self: “Just go for it. Most importantly, have fun. Someone once said, if you’re not having fun then why are you doing it? How Nancy achieves balance: “Getting lost in nature is my go-to balancing act. Those are my essentials. They keep me balanced and sane in an otherwise crazy world.”

D R I V E R' S NOTEBOOK EXPLORING FORD’S ELECTRIC MACH-E WITH SILL-TERHAR MOTORS When it seems like everyone in Boulder drives Elon Musk’s electric vehicles, set yourself apart with Ford Mustang’s Mach-E. With an extended range battery that gets more than 300 miles per charge, the sportiest Mach-E model hits 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds. “It’s a nice design change from your standard Tesla, which is everywhere,” says PT Ertl, director of marketing at new and used dealership Sill-TerHar Motors in Broomfield. “And it’s very comparable as a vehicle in terms of comfort and driveability.” PT owns one himself, noting the Mach-E’s comfort, sportiness and superior interior technology to most other Ford models. The vehicle also boasts a spacious back seat, ample storage and cargo space, all without emitting carbon dioxide from using gasoline. “I don’t need to worry about gas right now with prices surging,” PT says. Sill-TerHar has sold 183 Mach-Es since first getting them last April. Their incoming units are sold out for the rest of the year. The dealership started in 1960, across the street from its current location. Today, SillTerHar offers new Ford, Mazda, Maserati and Volvo models, along with a selection of pre-owned vehicles. Because many of their customers already know which car they want and just have to decide how much they’re willing to pay for it, Sill-TerHar posts their lowest prices online to avoid haggling. “We’re a relationship store,” PT says. “We depend on people coming back and telling friends about us.” Test drive a Mach-E at Sill-Terhar Motors, 150 Alter Street in Broomfield.
