As Luck Would Have It I’VE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO MAKE A CAREER OUT OF STORYTELLING. My family and I moved to Boulder about eight years ago practically on a whim after our plan to relocate abroad fell apart. It ended up being a perfect fit. Turns out, Colorado people are my people—with their love of the great outdoors, eating well and making the most of leisure time. As luck would have it, that same year I started writing for Boulder Lifestyle, where I helped share small business owners’ stories in print. Years later, the stars of our overseas dream move magically aligned and we traded pine trees for the sea, setting off for a temporary life in Sydney, Australia. How fortunate were we to put one life on pause to start another. I found new stories to tell, but while the location was picturesque, we truly missed our community and sense of camaraderie among neighbors. Once settled back locally, I vowed to become more integrated than ever, connecting people with those who can help build a path, spark a smile or fill a gap. Recently luck struck again when the opportunity to join the magazine as editor surfaced. I’m beyond thrilled to share the latest and greatest about this amazing place we call home and the incredible people that make it all happen. Drop me a note and say hello. I’d love to hear your story.

The report also named Boulder the No. 2 in the nation for Best Places to Live for Quality of Life and No. 53 for Best Places to Retire. The US News & World Report 2021-2022 Best Places to Live list was determined based on a methodology that factored in job market, housing affordability, quality of life, desirability and net migration ratings. IF YOU'VE BEEN AROUND THE COLORADO BLUEGRASS SCENE FOR A LITTLE WHILE, YOU LIKELY HAVE A "VINCE HERMAN STORY." Herman, a founding member of Leftover Salmon, has been a fixture on the local and national music scene for three and a half decades. His jovial charisma and love of life are undeniable, and if Vince is involved, you better believe it's going to be a party. I can close my eyes today and go back to 1999, where I first heard Leftover Salmon's The Nashville Sessions CD in my college dorm room. I was instantly hooked and knew that I had to see them live. That following spring, as I searched the web via dial-up internet in my parents' basement, I discovered that Leftover Salmon was hosting a festival in my home state of Missouri. "Salmon Fest" was to be held in Lesterville, MO. I had lived in Missouri my whole life and had never heard of Lesterville, let alone knew where it was. Not to be denied, a buddy and I printed off Mapquest directions and made the nearly five-hour drive to attend the "Fester in Lester," as it was quickly coined. While I doubt that I'll ever return to Lesterville, I'll never forget that incredible weekend of music, which started my 25-year passion for attending summer music festivals. After spending my college years cultivating brain cells, I spent my post-college years parting with some of them while skiing and playing apres' ski gigs in Vail. In 2005, after finishing up a gig on Bridge Street, my friends and I quickly hustled out of the bar so we could catch the end of the "Vince Herman & Friends" show at the Samana Lounge. Having nowhere to store our instruments, we brought them down the steps and into the small music club. As the night grew late, I knew that there were only a few songs left, and this would probably be my only chance to get on stage with a music hero of mine. While I had never met Vince before that night, something told me this particular setting, in a tiny ski town bar, might present itself as a rare opportunity for me to share the stage with a living legend. In between one of their final songs, I simply walked up to the small stage and asked if my buddy (who was a ripping banjo player) and I could sit in. Vince smiled and said, "Well yeah! Get on up here!" I was not an accomplished mandolin player by any stretch of the imagination, but Vince was so graceful and had us stay up for the final two songs. I remember texting so many friends before I went to bed, telling them, "I PLAYED WITH VINCE HERMAN TONIGHT!" Fast forward to present day, after several decades of living here in Boulder County, Vince now calls Nashville home.

BACK STAGE (CONTINUED)
Vince says, “it kind of started last October. I was on an RV trip and ended up getting a publishing deal here, so I bought a house!” As if buying a new house in a new city and being a frontman for a national touring band wasn’t enough, Herman recently put another music project together called, The High Hawks. Along with Herman, The High Hawks include Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth), Adam Greuel (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades), Chad Staehly (Hard Working Americans), Bryan Adams (Deadphish Orchestra) and Will Trask (Great American Taxi). "It was just a bunch of friends who loved hanging with each other, looking for a way to make music together," Herman says with a chuckle. As spinoff "super groups" are becoming more popular among the heavy hitters in the bluegrass scene, The High Hawks are taking the unique approach of only playing music that they have written for this particular project. "We figured since we had a bunch of new material, we might as well cut a record," Herman adds. “Few genres of music enable you to find a musician on a sold-out stage like Red Rocks one week, then see that same musician with a different band in a small, sweaty music club the following week. It's both fascinating and beautiful. I may be biased, but in my opinion, it truly shows the humility of musicians in this scene. "The crux of the joy of the High Hawks is that we would have an absolute blast, even without a crowd, but the smaller venues do present a chance to connect with the crowd in a unique way," says Herman. The High Hawks self-titled debut album is available on all major streaming platforms and hopefully to a Colorado venue near us soon!

BOULDER LIFESTYLE: What made you want to take your art and turn it into a career? DELADIER ALMEIDA: This is something that I have been doing since I was a child. It always came very naturally to me. It was always a goal of mine. BOULDER LIFESTYLE: Was there an artist that inspired you as a child or was this something that was just of complete aptitude? DELADIER ALMEIDA: Yeah, it was pretty spontaneous. There wasn’t anyone in my family that did anything like this. Sometimes it can be a movie or an image that changes one person’s life. Art changed mine and I just stuck with it throughout my life. I studied architecture and industrial design in Brazil and graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1990. Now, I just paint what I see. The idea is to have a unique view of things so that what I do creates enough interest that people want to have my work as a part of their lives. BOULDER LIFESTYLE: What is the importance behind people seeing your work specifically? DELADIER ALMEIDA: An artist must have an audience in order for the work to be

influenced. That is very empowering to me. How I want people to be influenced by what I do is part of how I go about forming my vision and my language. It’s important for people to see my work because it is a reflection of the context that I live in.

BOULDER LIFESTYLE: What kind of experience does a Del Almeida piece tend to give its spectator(s)? DELADIER ALMEIDA: My work is going to affect people based on their history, their interests, their own baggage—you cannot predict how the work is going to be perceived for that reason. You just have to provide enough quality and craftsmanship to best reflect reality. There is going to be a series of aesthetic and language that resonates with someone’s own self-image. BOULDER LIFESTYLE: In a prior interview, you mentioned that you liked to work “on the edge of your rational mind.” What does that mean and how is it portrayed in your artwork? DELADIER ALMEIDA: The idea is to allow the language of painting to be an ally to my interests and to my way of seeing things; and allow an abstraction to what I’m looking at. I may be looking at a tree, but it’s more than that. You can’t allow yourself to be too rational with everything. It’s a matter of accepting reality but allowing your own inner reality to come in and make its collection of marks. BOULDER LIFESTYLE: Do you feel as though there is an importance built around the concept of art? How do you feel that it impacts our communities or society on a larger scale? DELADIER ALMEIDA: I think that artists bring attention to aspects of reality that people in their daily, busy lives may not have time to appreciate. In addition to showing people the things that may go unnoticed, we, as in anyone who produces cultural content, are shaping our society by seeing things in a way that it never has. There is room for a more sophisticated, more complex, and more engaged perception of visual reality—an entirely new way of seeing things.

IT'S AN ART CREATING ENDURING OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES WITH TLC GARDENS ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE | PHOTOGRAPHY DAVID WINGER PHOTO ART
WHEN CHERI STRINGER FOUNDED BOULDER’S TLC GARDENS IN 2005, SHE DID IT WITH A SINGULAR DRIVING FORCE AT HEART—ELEVATING LIVES. Whether it’s through enhancing the lives of the company’s clients by creating their ideal outdoor living spaces or through the continual development and support of team members, it’s a principle that continues to hold true today. “We’re in the business of helping people live their best lives,” says Cheri, founder, partner and chief technical officer with TLC Gardens. “It’s a mission that we take very seriously, and it includes discovering what really sings and speaks to our clients so that we can ensure our designs are meaningful, valuable and lasting.” TLC Gardens is a design-build firm that expertly weaves engineering, architecture and artistry into each of its projects. It’s a holistic approach that bridges both technical and creative disciplines, as designs take into account elements such as structure, space, relation, view corridors, flow patterns and the functional requirements necessary to make them all sustainable. Having grown up in a family full of architects and engineers, Cheri rediscovered her passion for these dual practices and integrates their intersection into all of her designs. This conjunction of art and function is put on stunning display at Gallagher Farm, a recent Boulder County renovation project undertaken by the TLC Gardens team. A historic three-generation farm property, the project involved elevating the home’s outdoor spaces to better match and support its interior upgrades. “When we first visited the site, I was inspired by the beautiful mid-century modern updates that had been made inside the home,” says Cheri. “It’s a property with rich and unique topography, views, history, water features and farm equipment, and we sought to make the exterior spaces truly memorable while honoring the home’s sense of place.”

The property’s high water table likewise called for purposeful engineering to manage the watershed and drain water offsite—ensuring the spaces were not just enduring in their aesthetic appeal, but also in their technical water management. The numerous steel elements integrated into the property are unique design features that also embody the dual function and aesthetic prowess of the site. From the ornamental steel fencing to the mailbox and other custom steelwork, they are some of Cheri’s personal favorite details of the project. The integration of these structural and water management systems, combined with design principles of scale, view corridors and space dynamics, facilitates peak outdoor cooking, dining, gathering and entertaining, all with inimitable style and seamless natural connections. “It’s hard to describe the nuance of designing to achieve a sense of place,” says Cheri. “Any outdoor living space has a number of layers that all work together to form a space of real meaning and value, and it’s a goal we look to achieve with all of our designs.”

“That was a real lightbulb moment in my head which was—forced deadlines do make you better,” he says. “When you are locked in, and you have the right people and you are focused, you’re not distracted, and you sort of attack a problem. You’re fearless. You trust your instincts. You don’t over-pontificate and overthink.” Another reason he wanted to pursue this idea was that sometimes brands were told no by big agencies if they didn’t meet a certain financial threshold. “For me, who never wants to let people down, it always broke my heart,” he says. “The clients that probably need it the most are the ones who don’t get really good, sound marketing advice. Part of what this process does is it sort of right-sizes engagements so that if you’re a relatively smaller client, we can find a way to work with you.” A challenge of this work, according to Andy, is having to be on performance consistently. Or as he expressed—there is no luxury of tomorrow. “The reality is when you’re doing a threeday sprint or a two-week hack—there are no down days,” he says. “You have to be on, and you’ve gotta be focused. I’ve always had stressors in jobs throughout my life. I sort of half-joke, I coach my kids in lacrosse, and youth sports stresses me out. My job doesn’t stress me out. I love every minute of it. BETTER HUSTLE (CONTINUED) At Fortnight Collective, we live by our mantras to help motivate us and guide our thinking. Here’s what we believe are helpful tips for students getting into advertising. FORTUNE FAVORS THE BRAVE. Jump into the deep end of your job search. Be fearless. Straddle that line between arrogant and confident. Make people want to buy what you are selling. DO INTERESTING THINGS, AND INTERESTING THINGS WILL HAPPEN TO YOU. Andy’s former boss used to say this, and we love it. Stepping away from work (or your job search) at times will help you become more marketable. Throw yourself in the deep end of the world. Seek to travel, lean into art, music and culture. Wander, explore and drink deeply of life. THE WAY WE DO ANYTHING IS THE WAY WE DO EVERYTHING. Every detail matters. Every typo, every delayed response. Roll up your sleeves. And take pride in every interaction you have no matter how big or small. Art Installation: Michael Benjamin

This is Fortnight Collective’s rallying cry. We believe in business serendipity. Everything happens for a reason. What’s your better version of hustle? Seize the moment. They are hiring for attitude, personality, resilience, etc. Let your best self shine. There are lots of candidates to choose from. What makes you stand out from the rest? Your first assignment is to form the foundation of your personal brand. THE REST IS UP TO YOU. Every moment led to this. You put in the work. LEARN THE FACTS WITH IMPACT WEALTH
ELIMINATING THE 3 BIGGEST RETIREMENT RISKS PA R T I I
IN OUR LAST ARTICLE (PART I, MAY 2021), WE DISCUSSED THE THREE MOST SIGNIFICANT RISKS TO YOUR RETIREMENT PLAN.
INVESTMENT RISK + If you have been in the stock market, you have lived through this risk! Avoiding large losses is key. + Think about it, if you are down 50% at any given time, you will have to make 100% just to get back to break even. TAX RISK + Can you predict your retirement tax rate? How much will the government take? 30%? 50%? More? This gets even more complicated when you consider that your retirement can stretch 25 years and longer. + Given current tax proposals, tax rates are not likely to go down for most people. CAPITAL RISK + Simply put, not having enough money to fund your retirement goals. + According to one of the largest 401(k) providers in the country, 74% of your income in retirement is driven by how much you invest and only 26% is a result of your investment returns. In Part I, we focused mostly on Capital Risk.
64
Boulder Lifestyle | August 2021
In part II, we will primarily cover Tax Risk. Taxes are challenging because they are a moving target. It is easier to assess the risk on a particular investment strategy or by saving more for retirement, but how do you plan for taxes when tax rates change over time? HERE’S AN EXAMPLE.
FOR EVERY $100,000 PER Y E A R O F A F T E R -TA X I N C O M E DESIRED IN RETIREMENT:
+ If we use a 27% effective tax rate as a baseline, you will need about $137,000 in taxable income to net $100,000 after taxes. Assuming you are in retirement from age 65 to 90, that would total $3,425,000 needed for retirement income, not even adjusting for inflation. + What if your effective tax rate increased to 35%? It may not sound like much, but that is almost a 30% increase in taxes and will require $154,000 of taxable income to net the same $100,000 after tax. Another $17,000 per year or $425,000 over your 25-year retirement. What can you do about it? We suggest strategies to ensure a portion of your retirement income will come from TAX-FREE and tax-favored sources, in addition to the usual tax-deferred sources. With a little planning, a balanced approach around maximizing tax-free growth and minimizing losses can go a long way in reducing stress over future tax rates. Overall, combining solid investment returns with tax efficiency will likely get you further compared to just saving more and taking on greater risk for higher returns. The sooner you start working towards a taxfree future, the closer you are to enjoying the benefits.
In Part III, we will focus on Investment Risk and how best to address it. To learn more, or for a white paper on the topic, please contact us at 303.645.4800 or Impact@ImpactWealth.com.

Anya’s ventures aim to create an impact in society, by encouraging people to build resilience against bullying and peer pressure and embrace what makes them unique. “I was drawn to the idea of using creative tools to spread positivity and empower people because I believe that art can be a powerful tool for spreading ideas,” says Anya. “Each method of expression that art encompasses, whether it is illustration, fashion, music, film, etc., is a unique language that speaks to the audience in its own way, but it’s also a universal language that can be understood and experienced by many.” While studying at CU, Anya also started Buffs Against Bullying, a community of students with a common goal to take a stand against bullying and educate students and community members about bullying prevention and confidence-building, and spread positivity and kindness. Full Cycle is a one-stop shop for all cycling needs, from bike sales to bike servicing, bike rentals, bike fittings and bike outing recommendations and tours. The company’s partnership with Colorado Multisport has facilitated an exciting expansion into addressing specialty niches as well, including multisport, cycling performance and high-end road cycling. But the Full Cycle and Colorado Multisport experience represents so much more, and it is a true venue for living and breathing the local cycling lifestyle. Having recently enjoyed its grand opening celebration in July, the new location also includes the newly reopened—and new and improved—The Tune Up Taproom, which had to be closed for much of 2020 during the early days of the pandemic. Housed within the shop, it is a full-service and locally lauded taproom, sports bar and coffee shop. Ideal for pre-ride caffeination, post-ride celebration and general revelry with fellow cyclists and non-cyclists alike, it serves as a lively, yet laid back gathering space that hosts myriad events such as trivia nights, live music, comedy shows, guest talks, fundraisers and more. The new shop’s location also represents an ideal perch in the heart of the city with close proximity to numerous gateways to cycling activities. Just one mile by bike path from Valmont Bike Park—which plays host to many local race events—the shop also caters to the expanding community around Boulder Commons and the area’s new transit center. “In our new space, we’ve got one of the best parking lots in the city, as well as amazing sweeping views of the Flatirons and surrounding foothills,” says Russell. Shared by adjacent businesses, this exciting new outdoor area has facilitated even further enhancements and expansions to the Full Cycle business, including an outdoor bike rental area. At its heart, Full Cycle is continuing its legacy of supporting the local cycling community. As the co-founder and co-organizer of local cycling non-profits Cyclists for Community and Wednesday Morning Velo, and the supporter of many cycling clubs and organizations in town, Russell has ingrained this spirit of giving back into the brand—putting the business motto of inspiring and empowering the community to ride bicycles more often into action in numerous ways. It’s a goal that the brand is committed to fulfilling for years to come.

He took the 24-foot trailer and gutted it. Giving her a “shell on” renovation, rebuilding everything from the axles up for it to be fully functioning when off the grid, meaning she has a generator on board to power all coffee equipment. The shell remains original and that’s just about it. The end result reveals a dreamsicle colored trailer that nods to the Wild West inside. Canvas blinds, cowboy and horseshoe motifs, and matte black light fixtures all blend seamlessly together against the peach-colored walls. Light fills the spacious interior where Brandon brews up specialty drinks for customers and friends alike. His very first stop is the Cole Neighborhood community where the trailer sits parked. He has been warmly welcomed by neighbors and passersby with whom he is eager to share his favorite Denver coffee. His chosen coffee is roasted by Middle State in Denver (MiddleStateCoffee.com), who he loves for their flavor and roasting techniques and also for the people behind the beans. “They are a rad bunch of people who are fun and supportive to work with, which is as equally important as the coffee itself,” shares Brandon. “Along with having Middle State on the bar, I will be rotating guest roasters from across the country.” Currently, Brandon serves a range of coffees and teas, including cold brew, cappuccinos, and chai and matcha lattes. With both a loyalty to his favorite roasters as well as a curiosity to incorporate new coffees along his journey, Nowhere Coffee is becoming the capsule for an ever-evolving expedition. “Nowhere is still in its infancy as a business,” Brandon expresses. “So, the itinerary is moment to moment, but I have events around Colorado booked through the fall and plan to take some road trips west and up to the Pacific Northwest this year.” Even though Ramblin’ Rose had to wait a little longer to show off her glossy new veneer, Brandon feels fortunate that he had the time and space to focus all of his energy on the trailer. “If everything wasn’t shut down I would have felt a self-imposed pressure to hurry and get it finished,” Brandon shares. These silver linings of Covid have enlisted gratitude and perspective for those healthy and able to see them. Brandon is no exception, and now that travel restrictions are easing and cities are re-opening he is prepared for those wide-open roads ahead.

PEACH FREEZE HOW PALISADE FARMERS BOUNCED BACK TO SELL AT BOULDER COUNTY FARMERS MARKET
ON
OCTOBER 27 LAST YEAR, AN UNSEASONABLY EARLY WINTER STORM HIT COLORADO’S WESTERN SLOPE. In one night, temperatures dropped
from the 70s down to single digits, devastating many farmers’ peach trees and their yields for this years’ Boulder County Farmers Market. “It was a different kind of freeze last year,” says Joe Burtness, farmer at Morton’s Organic Orchards in Palisade, Colorado. “Most of the time, we don’t have freezes that lose trees. A fall freeze like that hasn’t occurred for decades.” Trees drop leaves when the base of a leaf stem seals itself off from the rest of the branch. Though stems naturally harden off in cooler weather, with sudden freezes, they don’t have the time to turn colors first. The result isn’t just a loss of beauty. “We had some early freezes when the trees didn’t turn red and yellow, just green and dead,” says Brian Coppom, Boulder County Farmers Market’s executive director. “They didn’t have time to harden in low temperatures throughout the winter, and the result is a lot of them die.”

Farmers are typically more concerned about frequent spring freezes. Many have machines to heat their tree blossoms to adequate temperatures, especially in late spring when buds have grown and their threshold for cold has shrunk. “When we get a late freeze that drops to 24 or 23 degrees, we end up losing the crop,” Joe says. “A few degrees can mean a lot.” October 2020’s freeze came after one in April earlier that year, when most farmers lost 90 percent of their peach crop. Though a third freeze early this spring wasn’t helpful after October’s temperature drop, farmers will still sell thousands of pounds of ripe peaches at Boulder County Farmers Markets.

“I don’t know that the customers will see the impacts of that October freeze,” Brian says, besides the fact that peaches will arrive at the market a bit late. Instead of hitting stands in early- and mid-June, this year’s crop will show up in late June and be available throughout August. Because the season’s temperature swing was particularly brutal on the southern Western Slopes, farmers with a smaller peach crop have chosen to cancel some of their seasonal CSA offerings and other contracts in order to focus on farmers markets. “The fruit industry is fascinating because it varies with farmers and microclimates,” Brian says. “Every year, there’s some kind of toss up about how the season is going to be. We seem to be getting more and more of these large temperature swings in the fall and spring.” Sensitivity to temperature remains important throughout a peach’s growing season, as farmers plant up to half a dozen varieties that ripen at different times of the year. Early season cling peaches, named after the fruit that holds onto the pit, kick off the season. Freestone peaches, whose pits fall out easily, hit stands in August and are good for canning and baking pies. To tell if a peach is ripe, first talk with your farmer and learn about the peach they’re selling, Joe advises. Those that have a little yield to the flesh can be eaten on the ride home or a day or two after. Enjoy harder peaches later in the week. A fully developed peach should be round and without offset seams or oblong features, both of which can occur during an early freeze. “The peach should have a pleasant peach smell to it,” Brian says. “At the market, you’re almost always sure they’re going to be ripe.” Morton’s Organic Orchards picks peaches on Friday and sells them at Boulder County Farmers Market on Saturday. “We really keep a close eye on the fruit season and talk to the growers,” Brian says, because fruit draws a lot of customers to the Boulder County Farmers Market, giving business to other stands. “No one’s going to be scared of buying peaches and not knowing what to do with them. Fruit is a huge attracter, and that affects everyone at the market.”

Kids, especially kids who may be picky or selective, often like a little bit of novelty.
MAKE SNACKS AND MEALTIME FUN We all know that kids like to play and have fun, so why not make food fun? Whether you’re turning broccoli into a microphone at dinner, or playing tic-tac-toe with edible carrot sticks, kids get into it. DON’T GIVE UP Parents often assume that if a child doesn’t eat a food the first or second time it’s served, the child doesn’t like the food. Many children may need to see or taste a food 10 or 20 times before they are willing to eat it. FORCING HEALTHY FOODS ON KIDS OFTEN BACKFIRES Often, making a child eat food or eat a certain amount of food backfires. It may backfire in the short run by making a child more selective and less likely to eat the foods you want them to eat.
