SKIING VERSUS SNOWBOARDING. Snowshoeing versus cross-country. Moguls versus corduroy. Through the trees versus above the tree line. There are plenty of options for enthusiasts to debate when it comes to how to best spend a day on the mountain. But one item on which they should all be able to agree? That one particular mountain oasis—an elevated 5,758 square foot abode—is a resplendent encapsulation of the stunning beauty of the Vail living experience. Completed in the summer of 2020, Clifftop is a luxurious Vail home perched with 270-degree views of the surrounding peaks, from the Gore Range to the east to the entire span of Vail Mountain all the way to Beaver Creek to the west. “The goal was to create a home with a modern yet traditional design that would be timeless and offer the most high-end experience possible,” says Tye Stockton, real estate advisor with The Stockton Group—part of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty. Designed by Suman Architects and brought to life by Vail Custom Builders, the home is an achievement in distinct modernity with an inimitable reverence for its natural surroundings. The main level is the standout hub of the home, featuring a lofty open layout with connected living, dining and kitchen areas imbued with a luxurious ski lodge feel. Anchored by the stunning two-sided fireplace, the space features vaulted ceilings that amplify the natural light flooding in at every angle from the expansive windows. The floor-to-ceiling Wieland glass door system leads to a wrap-around deck with a gas fire pit—creating a seamless indoor/outdoor experience. Arrigoni white oak wood flooring, high-end kitchen appliances and countless exquisite finishes and details give the space unmatched elegance.

Thoughtful space allocations and luxurious amenities also abound. The guest master suite offers versatile accommodation potential.

An artful glass wine display room is a chic focal point while multiple welcoming gathering spaces provide private oases. Throughout, the home allows its incomparable surroundings to shine while also highlighting its own luxurious design. “This home is so much about its expansive views and natural sunlight,” Stockton says. “But it is also meant to draw you in with its comfort, convenience and carefree living.” In short, it’s a mountain living paradise.

PRESERVING THE MAGIC

OF CRYSTAL MILL

ARTICLE LIVIA HOOSON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CRYSTAL MILL

FOR MANY COLORADANS AND VISITORS TO THE AREA, CRYSTAL MILL IS AN ICONIC STOPOVER ATTRACTING THOUSANDS ANNUALLY. Located in the now ghost town of Crystal City above Marble, just a stone’s throw from the resort town of Aspen, sits the towering wooden powerhouse (oddly enough, not a mill) that was built in 1892. It’s truly a sight to behold, where the roaring Crystal River pours from the side of its foundation, making it the most photographed site in the state. The destination invites hikers into an oasis off the beaten path that shows a time in history when silver mining dominated the region and hardworking families called this beautiful corner of the West home. Built in the 1880s, the turbine waterwheel was built as a more efficient alternative to other mills and was in operation until its closure in 1917. It has served as a memorable travel destination for over a century, where families, friends and travelers have shared memories in the shadow of this striking landmark. Recently, the family who owns the powerhouse has announced they will soon list the property for sale, putting Crystal Mill at risk of getting torn down. To protect and preserve the powerhouse

COLORADO’S MOST PHOTOGRAPHED SITE RUNS THE RISK OF BEING TORN DOWN

for generations to come, a nonprofit has been put into place.

Heather Leigh, president of the Crystal Mill Foundation, has set a goal of $10 million that would go towards buying the land and implementing on-site facilities (including a source of drinking water) for hikers and visitors. The money will also be allocated to preserve the natural land and massive rock formation that the powerhouse was built upon. Leigh reminds people that time is of the essence as the sale of the property could happen shortly if donation goals are not reached. The foundation is aiming to reach its full goal by June of 2021 in order to begin its plans of preservation. As we begin a new year and set in place new plans for the future, we must also look to the past to recognize where we have come from. Crystal Mill stands as a reminder to do just this, as one of Colorado’s most beloved treasures fights to be seen for centuries to come.

JACOB HANSEN IS FAMILIAR WITH BAKING CHALLENGES. Besides mastering cake, bread, and

petit four baking at Boulder’s high altitude, Hansen spent four months as a pastry chef in Antarctica, wowing scientists and contractors in sub-zero temperatures. But since the summer of 2020, he’s been

navigating perhaps his biggest challenge yet: kneading and mixing his way through a global pandemic as the executive pastry chef at Rosetta Hall and running his own stall there, Petite Fleur. Hansen took over last June when Petite Fleur’s previ-

CARE·TO P I L AT E S A modern spacious pilates studio flooded with natural light, Care·To Pilates combines athletic pilates classes with a focus on control and alignment. The studio was built to create a full sensory experience and crafted to make you feel and look good. Owner/ Founder Kerttu Veske says, “It truly feels like a day in a spa, but you will be leaving with a stronger body and clearer mind.” Attend in-studio classes or private lessons as well as virtual private lessons and on-demand pilates videos. (For in-person classes, they offer nine reformers set up 6 feet apart.) Everybody has his or her own workout station and props that will not be shared. An exciting recent addition is Care•To Pilates x GUEST, where virtual instructor classes are held with different trainers from all over the USA (New York, California, Texas, etc.). The guest instructor will be teaching remotely, while the Care·To community is in the studio connecting through a Zoom projector screen. This project was created to offer diversity to its community and support for fellow trainers. Kerttu hails all the way from Estonia. Always searching for an easier way to explain how to pronounce her exotic name to Americans, she explains it’s like saying, “care to grab a coffee?” or “care to do pilates?” Hence the fun studio name. Since the re-opening in June 2020, Veske started a project called Care·To Pilates x FRIENDS. Every month they collaborate with a local small business they admire and whose values they align with to offer support during the difficult times. “Exercising is not just about physical health. It embodies mental and emotional well-being as well. More than ever, self-care is vital. In order to take care of others and the community around us, we have to take care of ourselves first. Needless to say, supporting small businesses is extremely important right now. We should support the businesses we want to keep having around,” Veske says. caretopilates.com

From grom’s to greybeards, locals turned up to debut their diverse skills mountainside as they competed for impressive prizes like K2 snowboards, Volcom clothing and sessions to Woodward Copper. And big-name sponsors included Vans and Snowboarder Magazine that helped make this an unforgettable experience. Moore recognizes that the Green Block Project’s efforts to get kids access to a local skatepark was actually helping the snowboard industry as skating can often be a gateway into the winter sport. “They are trying to get people standing sideways, whether they are on a skateboard or snowboard, and we wanted to help grow that effort,” Moore says. “With Methodology we have the capability to support great programs, parks and other initiatives in snowboarding communities,” Moore shares. “It’s the same mentality as the Green Block Project, who instead of sitting on the sidelines, are doing something productive.” So, as the 2020/2021 winter season is in full swing, we are reminded to recognize where we can give back to the industry that has helped make Colorado one of the leading places for snow sports in the world.

GOOD OLD DAYS

16-year-old Boulder High School student Sawyer Reivich partnered with his

crew of friends and fellow skaters (called Good Old Days) to produce something of their own. Their 30-minute short film “Honest to God” was filmed and edited during Covid and highlights the “true joy of skateboarding” Reivich shares. Between picturesque shots of Boulder’s landscape and the knee-scraping, rail-splitting scenes of the featured shredders, the video debuts a care-free attitude of what liberation looks like in the concrete grooves of the city. Silas Ure, a featured skater and collaborator on the project, shows us that

perhaps youth is not wasted on the young, saying “ In 20 years we will have adult responsibilities to deal with, but for now, we don’t have anything to worry about. We just get to skate fast and have fun.” “Thanks to Raul Pinto at Satellite Boardshop, we were allowed the opportunity to host an outdoor, socially distanced premier of the film,” says Reivich who works part-time at the store. Good Old Days are busy working on more videos to document their shared passion—proving Covid can’t keep them down.

For many parents, finding ways to educate and entertain their kids

at home was the enduring challenge. But Natasha Wright, a wife and mother of three young boys, found a way to do both. Named the Curious Climbers Gazette, her family started producing their own newspaper during Covid as a way to encourage her kids to write, think critically and stay curious. Zander (9), Keegan (6), and Wesley (4) are each involved in the operations including compiling the paper’s joke section, brain teasers and human-interest articles highlighting local geologists, food scientists and US veterans. The two eldest boys con-

duct all the interviews themselves. They also hand-deliver monthly issues to friends and family across their Lafayette neighborhood and offer digital copies via email. After sparking the interest of the boy’s teachers, they even launched their school's first issue of the Lafayette Curious Cougars News in November.

Here, her hand-drawn artwork is printed on everything from tee shirts, coffee mugs and face masks with adorable fox faces, the family’s cabin and hand-sketched mountain peaks. Dwight’s entry into running a small business means she is learning the basics of financial independence while promoting everyday items that appeal to the masses.
