Holiday Cheer I NEVER WAS A “CHRISTMAS DÉCOR” PERSON. Sure, the holiday season is unbelievably special, but decorating the house? That’s a hard pass. I could never jump on board with buying something you only set out for a few weeks every 12 months, then hid in a closet for the rest of the year. What was the point?

For the first two years, we only needed one small box to store our décor. Before we knew it, we needed another. I knew something was wrong when in August of this year while digging through a closet in our basement for some random item, I came across our holiday boxes and felt a ping of excitement to decorate. I thought, Is it time to bring them out yet? Then I wondered if I should take my temperature.

have items shipped directly to your home.

Having opened at the beginning of the year, she thinks despite how awful the pandemic has been for everyone, oddly enough, a meal delivery business was the perfect company to launch at the time. “While many restaurants were forced to pivot to menus that were more conducive to take home and reheat, I was able to build an entire concept from the start around that idea,” Lorna says, who felt compelled to go vegan five years ago after watching the documentary Cowspiracy. “I had always considered myself an animal lover and environmentalist, but after watching that documentary, I realized that my actions were not aligned with my values. I went vegan the next day,” Lorna says. Despite Boulder’s incredible foodie reputation, Lorna found there to be a lack of fully vegan restaurant choices, except for a couple of fast-casual spots. Avid climbers and backcountry skiers, the pair was particularly struck during a trip to Moab to climb desert towers, noting the power and confidence that reliable communication instilled in them to both feel more safe and to gain more from their experience. “I think that we all generally have the expectation that things will go as planned on an adventure,” Bryce says. “But I often find that even when my partners and I plan on staying close together, we find ourselves apart. Our primary mission with Rocky Talkie is to improve backcountry communication and allow people to easily stay connected while pushing their limits outdoors.”

RECOGNIZED

WORLDWIDE AS A FRONTRUNNER IN THE IMMERSIVE SPACE. Ranked on Fast Company's 2020 list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies, and awarded the #1 spot for Live Events, its newly opened Denver location challenges the perception of reality with its latest creation: Convergence Station. With backing by top creators like Games of Thrones’ George R.R. Martin, the Santa Fe-based arts and entertainment company invents and constructs highly immersive, interactive experiences, aiming to catapult audiences into realms of story, curiosity and exploration. Stepping out of the elevator into the exhibition is akin to stepping into a new dimension. Meow Wolf’s Convergence Station is a captivating experience, unlike any other museum in the city. It's a funhouse for all ages. Encompassing four floors with more than 70 interactive installations designed by more than 300 creatives, including 110 Colorado-based artists, exhibits are oversized worlds meant to be walked on—and through—touched and listened to. Actors placed throughout the space heighten the ambiance. There’s even an interactive tech and projection room where the visuals change underfoot as you move about. It’s a journey into a surreal, science-fictional story of converged worlds. 1338 1st St., Denver MeowWolf.com

RECONNECT BACK TO NATURE

This new Colorado Springs residence gave its occupants the ability to spread out and enjoy the last year in lightfilled spaces connected to nature. The design approach divided the house into two wing-like forms connected by a see-though glass entry. The gracious sliding glass doors open most rooms to patios, decks and outdoor spaces.

OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED)

THERE ARE MANY OLDER SMALL RANCH HOMES THROUGHOUT BOULDER WAITING FOR THE RIGHT DESIGN TEAM TO REALIZE THEIR POTENTIAL. The desirable neighborhood and notable lot size of this central Boulder property created tremendous opportunity for this whole house remodel and addition. With these favorable features in mind and knowing that the layout and size of the original ranch style house were not going to suffice, Fänas worked hand-in-hand with the homeowners to create a larger, open, light and inviting home, perfect for the modern Boulder family. Creating a living open flow was a priority with this project, and, typical of many mid-century homes, the initial ranch house was adversely compartmentalized and closed off. This, combined with the desire for more square footage, led to the decision to deconstruct the existing home, taking it down to its foundation. With a clean slate to begin with, the design team got to work on ways to maximize the impressive potential of this property. The result is an open-concept main level boasting a spacious great room with a stateof-the-art kitchen, dining and living room, and a full bedroom suite with sitting area. The south wall of the great room encompasses a fully retractable window wall that opens to a spacious patio, allowing for an easy and coherent transition to outdoor living on warm summer nights. Bringing the outdoors in, and vice versa, creates the

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy

A Message from Roger Reutimann

HOW ONE SCULPTOR IS RELAYING GLOBAL ISSUES THROUGH ART

ARTICLE BY KARYSMA HICKS | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ROGER REUTIMANN

VENTURING FROM SWITZERLAND TO BOULDER, ROGER REUTIMANN IS BRINGING WHAT HE CALLS HIS MEANINGFUL ARTWORK TO THE ATTENTION OF THOSE WHO CAN APPRECIATE THE AESTHETE OF THE CULTURAL VALUE THAT IS CONVEYED IN HIS WORK. Living and working in South Beach, Miami's spectacle for 13 years, he has been privy to many classifications of art. His art can be noted as contemporary with his chosen use of unfixed physical reality and unique cultural message(s) behind each piece.

116 Boulder Lifestyle | December 2021

Specializing in figurative abstract artistry, Reutimann is taking what he sees happen politically and socially within the external world and translating these subject matters into three-dimensional, avant-garde sculptures—or as what he calls them: statements. Aiming to create an emotional connection between the viewer and the art itself, Roger utilizes concepts, images and any other identifiers recognizable to today’s populace to divulge his own personal perspective. With sculptures such as Corporatocracy and False Idol, Nature Always Wins and Clockwork Destiny, he is able to portray his deepest mind and bring awareness to global issues that are affecting the human race. “I am a true believer that you have to be true to yourself,” Roger says. “You should not have to cater to any style or fashion. It is important to know who you are as an artist and to stick with it.” With this mantra in mind, it is clear that Roger adheres to his own advice and has become quite successful by doing so.
