Fast forward four years and Vian (now Vian Isak) has cracked the code of gleaning income in the world of streaming in the modern music business, with his label encompassing a stable of numerous different artists and boasting 30 million streams in 2017 alone. This has generated enough revenue for Vian to hire his brother Hein for help in running the company. A couple of months ago Vian contacted Tom, his former mentor. He explained that some of the most popular playlists on Spotify consisted of instrumental music, and Vohnic Records had no such material in their catalog thus far. Vian wondered that since Tom had composed and recorded numerous instrumental pieces for film, theater, and modern dance, if he might want to release a recording on Vohnic, and Tom’s response was “of course, why not”? Thus was born Tom Wasinger’s first solo album since 1985: A Mended Soul. Seven solo guitar pieces composed over the course of the last 40 years. You can hear it at Spotify.com.

TEN FINGERS, TEN TOES, ONE STRONG WAIL. It’s how we imagine—we hope, rather—all children come into the world. But what happens when their first appearance is made with a cleft lip or palate, or congenital deformities classified as microtia? That’s where Dr. Catherine Weng, a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Peak Ear, Nose and Throat Center in Broomfield, and the support of Help Us Give Smiles (HUGS) Foundation come in. Now in her third year volunteering, Dr. Weng was introduced to the HUGS Foundation during her fellowship training, where Dr. Quatela, founder of the organization, was her mentor. Since 2003, HUGS has been dedicated to liberating children from their congenital deformities and allowing them to develop into confident individuals. The organization has sent medical volunteers, such as Dr. Weng, on 26 missions throughout Guatemala, Vietnam, and Ecuador to perform over a thousand surgical procedures, free of cost, on children born with these conditions. Within a week, a group of six to ten surgeons can complete up to 50-60 life-changing surgeries. Put this into perspective: in the United States, surgery for Microtia can cost around $40,000 per child. For the same amount, HUGS can help nearly sixty children in Ecuador. According to HUGS, families are often broken apart when a child is born with a physical deformity. In some countries, the family feels as though a curse has been placed upon the child. Dr. Weng recalls one Vietnamese boy named Ky, who had long hair on one side because he was trying to cover his small ear. “He spoke perfect English and was about seven or eight years old,” she reminisced. “He told us, I was born without a normal ear just like your patients and I want you to fix my ear so I can look like a normal boy.” For children like him, the work she contributes is an opportunity to erase that shame. “It's very rewarding,” says Dr. Weng. “The kids are resilient— they go through so much.” Ky is one such example. “He does all of these English competitions—that’s his thing—and he updates us on the awards he won,” she says with a smile. “That little boy is the one that stuck with me most.” In 2018, HUGS will again have three missions, and Dr. Weng hopes to participate on one of them. “I continue to volunteer because I find it so rewarding to be able to give back to kids in communities around the world and to make a difference in these children's lives,” Dr. Weng says. “I return to the same locations to see the results of our previous year's surgery, and I return for the wonderful opportunity and incredible fun I have working with some of the most talented surgeons I've met.” Donations go directly toward implementing these missions and providing critically needed medical supplies. A LINE FORMS AWAITING THE 4 P.M. mark as doors open to Santo Boulder, Restaurateur/Chef Hosea Rosenberg’s newest restaurant in North Boulder. As I arrive, Chef Hosea and his staff are gathered around prepping for the night ahead, and the bustle begins. You may have heard of Chef Rosenberg before; he's the man behind one of Boulder's best, Blackbelly (his first food truck turned restaurant), specializing in whole-animal butchery. He took a different route when designing his second concept and cuisine found at Santo. The inspiration comes from his hometown, Taos, New Mexico. The seasonal menu shares his take on New Mexican fare, featuring a variety of fresh flavors while never forgetting the importance of the chile. The casual spot has a modern and cool aesthetic, like Blackbelly, but with Southwestern design details. For example, you can't miss the one of a kind lighting fixture paying homage to the ancient Zia Sun symbol and small ‘Santos,’ or saint figurines found presiding around the dining room. As I settled in, Chef Rosenberg and wife/PR Rep for Santo, Lauren Feder, explained that they would be bringing out an array of cocktails, appetizers and plates that were a mix of chef and customer favorites. And just like that, a unique variety of salsas: piña with smoked pineapple and jicama, verde with tomatillo and green chile, fuego with fire roasted tomatoes and chiles, and guacamole were placed on our table with local blue corn tortilla chips. As if this starting spread wasn’t enough, they brought out a colorful smoked rainbow trout tostada on a blue corn tortilla shell and their beautiful Little Gem Salad. To wash down our variation of starters were three handcrafted cocktails, each with a twist: A Nitro Mezcal Old Fashioned, The Sangre and the Zia. The Zia cocktail features Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, and Feder explained the background information about the label art—designed by Ken Price—which represents the single village in Oaxaca, Mexico. The main courses began rolling out as different staff members stopped by to check in and let us know their favorites on the menu. First came the Crispy Folded Tacos with Pork Adovada with sides of rice and beans. The main event was the delectable Wood Oven Half Chicken with Roast Winter Squash, Kale and Mole Rojo (a chef favorite). All of the food and drinks perfectly complemented each other and brings a pleasant variety to the Boulder food scene. In conclusion, it's Tao's cuisine with a delicious twist. As the meal wraps up, feeling so delightfully satisfied (and full), I am already thinking about the next time I will be in that line out front patiently waiting for the clock to strike four. 38

1. Fill a large pot with 1/2 inch of water. Stir in 2

Add fish stock and 1 cup of the lobster-cooking liquid. Bring to a simmer and cook, covered, for 1 hour. 4. Strain the broth through a colander, pressing down hard on the solids to extrude as much liquid as possible. Wipe out the pot and pour in the broth. Add the rice and cook for at least 30 minutes, or until the grains are cooked to extreme softness. 5. Blend the bisque in a food processor or blender, then pass through a fine sieve, again pressing down hard on what solids remain. Add the cream and bring to a low simmer. Although her role as an artist takes a backseat to motherhood, Shively’s daily adventures with her son are recorded, like a diary, through patterns, color and simple designs. DESIGN, FIRST AND FOREMOST A lot has changed in the company’s 25 years. “But at the same time,” Reed says, “design is and has always been the driving force." “I like playing with design more than trying to say something— that’s been consistent through everything I’ve ever done,” he elaborates, “But at the beginning, I was using design to question society and its relationship to value.” To do that, he started using a rough diamond cube, a 4-mm cube that equals 1 carat in weight, which is what the Todd Reed brand has since been built on. “At the time, there was a big ad campaign that said, she’ll like you at a half carat, but she’ll love you at a carat—it just felt ridiculous.

Most people look at it and call it ‘Starry Night.’ Reed reaches behind his seat, sifting through items scattered across the desk. He locates a shiny, anticlastic metal cuff with small clusters of varied sized jewels saturated near the base, rising and then tapering at the top, giving an effervescent-like effect.

MORE THAN JUST BUSINESS Reed admits that business has not always been his forte. “Sometimes the universe would want the business to grow, and I wouldn’t let it get bigger—I would hold it back because I wasn’t emotionally ready. Or sometimes we would be too big, and I would get scared and shrink stuff to keep myself healthy and the work innovative; and then the universe would tug at the reigns again, and we’d get bigger, and the work would suffer. “In a way, my emotional sensitivity has dictated the direction of the business, and that has been the biggest lesson thus far: to follow my intuition.” You might say that, for Reed, his work is treated more like a relationship. Reflecting on this, Reed ruminates for a minute before answering, “I’m still young, so this business has been most of my life. While in college, my professor arranged a show of metalsmiths around the country and Todd was one of them. His design sense immediately appealed to me, and he was a semi-local artisan that I wanted to work for. The woman working in the gallery overheard me talking to my girlfriend about it and suggested I call him. She had recently worked for him and said that he’d been receiving a lot of publicity at the time and could probably use some help. I emailed him that night, and a couple of days later I had a bench test. The rest is history. I’ve worked for Todd 11 years this January. || Ashley Tidrick || We have the benefit of working closely with Todd to better capture his visions. Kelsey Ross, the founder of Hadley Girl, has established an avenue to both create clothing and accessories for little girls, and to give back to the community that supports her. 58

Hadley Girl is named for Ross’ own little Hadley, the second of her three children. The company began not as a company at all, but as a chance for Ross to use her creative side to dress her little girls in the pretty, delicate bows she simply wasn’t finding in stores. Ross’ love for bows harks back to her own childhood surrounded by her three brothers, where due to an unfortunate bowl haircut— bows functioned more as gender identifiers than fashion accessories. Though Ross’ girls didn’t inherit her trademark cut, Ross wanted to pass on her love for bows. So, she put her crafting skills to work and began creating what she sought. What began as a hobby soon morphed into an Etsy shop, gaining momentum from there and blossoming into a full-fledged company. Now, three years down the road, Hadley Girl continues to grow and thrive, currently offering bows and rompers with basics and woven pieces to come this spring. The company's foray into clothing was inspired by Ross’s desire to dress her girls in cozy, comfortable clothes that—and here’s the key—last. As any parent knows, the quality (and usefulness) of baby clothes truly falls on how much they can survive, and as Ross found, most of the clothes she wanted to dress her daughter in couldn’t last long. So, once again, Ross is filling the void.

The entrepreneur found her first chance when Ivy, an acquaintance’s daughter who was just a bit older than Hadley, was diagnosed with Leukemia. MANY A FAMILY AND GROUP OF FRIENDS HAVE SAT AROUND AN EMPTY TABLE, DRUMMING THEIR FINGERS IN ANTICIPATION, AS A BOX OF JUMBLED JIGSAW PUZZLE PIECES IS POURED OUT IN FRONT OF THEM. It’s this image, one of friends gathered in conversation and laughter, that inspired Liberty Puzzles Founder and Co-owner Chris Wirth to create his unique Boulder business 14 years ago. “Jigsaw puzzles are a social vehicle,” says Wirth, “something meant to bring people together.” The golden age of jigsaw puzzles was the 1930s, as the Great Depression had people seeking inexpensive entertainment. The popularity of puzzles, then typically wooden and hand-cut using a scroll saw, exploded. By the early 1940s, however, die-cut, or stamped, cardboard puzzles hit the market, and the hand-cut puzzle’s popularity waned. It’s the artfulness and creativity synonymous with hand-cut wooden puzzles that Wirth aims to bring back into prominence, and into people’s homes. Each puzzle at Liberty is the result of an elaborate creative process kick-started when the art print subject matter is chosen. Wirth, partial to bright colors and busy, exciting compositions, adds that searching for new puzzle art the best part of his job. Lynon Aksamit, staff artist with Liberty Puzzles for ten years, then conceptualizes the design of the puzzle’s cut pattern, ensuring individual pieces reflect the art’s content. “Whimsy” pieces, hand-drawn to resemble recognizable forms that correspond to the puzzle’s theme, are a signature of Liberty Puzzles and are dropped into the design for extra character and charm. For Aksamit, a 500-piece puzzle design can take ten hours of drawing, resulting in a puzzle whose pieces and design are works of art themselves. Liberty

“Wall of Shame” is comprised of photos of canines who have mistaken a precious puzzle piece for an oh-so-chewable treat. Don’t worry, the replacement puzzle piece is free, but a photo of the guilty pup is expected in return. Opening a Liberty Puzzles store on Pearl Street Mall three years ago simply felt right for Wirth and his local business. Wirth looks forward to the upcoming release of a collection of Dr. Seuss puzzle images and continuing to create artfully crafted puzzles for the Boulder community and beyond.
