Trick or Treat October has been, and will always be, my favorite month. A large part of this has to do with the silliest holiday of all time, Halloween. Each year my fiveyear-old self is resurrected all month long, and the vibrant feelings of excitement still haven’t left my soul. I mean, who doesn’t love getting creative with a cool costume? It’s the one night of the year you can be whomever—or whatever—you want. It’s the time of year that little ghouls inspire you to embrace your inner child.

I plan on re-watching every possible cult classic horror movie, decorating inside and out, visiting a haunted house and, of course, baking spooky sweets. However, there is one horror to All Hallows Eve that is hard to deny: the extra temptation and weight most of us put on. I would even argue that Halloween kicks off that “holiday bod” we’re all so desperately trying to avoid. So, instead of focusing on sweets and candy, we decided to turn October around and made this issue all about health and wellness. We met with three local Olympians and discussed their achievements at this year’s big event hosted in Brazil. Their inspiring stories and comments are definitely worth reading about. There’s also a feature about the newest bike craze—gravel grinding. Personally, a fad that I don’t think will go out of style anytime soon. Finally, there’s a color trend report from A Bit Lovely, and our huge fashion shoot blending fashion and interior design. This is a project we have been anxiously waiting to share! The seasons may change but certain things will always remain the same—like loving a ridiculous holiday. We hope you enjoy this health-themed October issue. It’s a bit of a trick but also a treat for your fitness goals.

A slight chill in the air made for a cozy hangout, and the hazy rays of the disappearing light over the Flatirons were reminiscent of one of Monet’s impressionist paintings. Boulder is synonymous with beauty in all seasons, but this particular time of year is unrivaled. 5. Wonderland A bit closer to home than the top of Bear Peak, but it still feels like you’re in a world of your own. This is one of our top picnic locations. Head to the West side of Wonderland lake and about 15 minutes straight up the hill behind it. fter many months of waiting, we finally had a good excuse to break out the butcher paper. Why you may ask? Because Blackbelly converts into a venue by

night, and what could be more fitting for a table runner at a butcher shop? When Boulder Lifestyle was asked to help set the table for a private affair, we teamed up with local florist Fawns Leap and Hunt and Gather Event Rentals to turn the shop into a warm space for mingling. Blackbelly is the only restaurant in Boulder that brings in whole animals from their friends' ranches to butcher and sell in-house, and are the only ones licensed to make and sell their own cured meats. It also happens to be the perfect event space for people interested in a modern, artisanal look. There’s an inspiration that stems from old world butcher shop that is rare to find these days. The shop seats 30–40 people comfortably, with room for 75 at standing tables. There’s also a private patio that accommodates 40 (when weather permits). A fully equipped professional kitchen and liquor license allows for specialty food and drink menus depending on each host's taste buds. For this gathering, the menu included some of Owner Chef Hosea Rosenberg's favorite party foods such as blood sausage with crispy polenta and tomato jam, lardo and fruit toast and grape, pistachio and goat cheese truffles. Another crowd favorite was the specialty beef tallow "wax" seasoned with rosemary and garlic. These edible candles ended up being the perfect conversation piece and create the perfect ambiance for a dinner party. “Never overlook the importance of candlelight!” Says Tara Huston of Fawns Leap, who helped put together the tablescapes. “We love the combination of rough-hewn containers that have a distressed, industrial feel paired with the soft lushness of textural floral on the wood tables,” says Huston. “Natural elements continue to be very much on-trend, so the idea of bring-

ing nature inside by including plants in your tablescape has such a great appeal.” The favorite design detail were the miniature arrangements set in the glass globes, which double as great party favors so guest can take part of the festivities home. For setting up your own dinner party, don’t be afraid to mix florals with plants. Incorporate containers of different height and sizes—contrasting textures look best.

GRAPE, PISTACHIO & GOAT CHEESE “TRUFFLES” Serves 4-8 • 40 fresh, juicy green and red grapes • 8oz plain goat cheese • 8oz shelled pistachios, toasted • grey sea salt • truffle oil 1. Pick grapes, wash gently in cold water and dry on paper towels. 2. Roll a very small ball of goat cheese in your hands (roughly half the size of a grape) and flatten in the palm of one hand with your thumb. 3. Place one grape in center of goat cheese and gently work cheese around until grape is entirely covered. Chill. 4. Crush toasted pistachios in food processor until very fine. Place in bowl.

ere’s something that’s a bit lovely, infusing interior design with personal styling and colour theory. Nancy Gandrud specializes in these three

elements through her Boulder boutique design business—A Bit Lovely. “I wanted to pursue my own creative passions in fashion, art and interior design and help curate an aesthetic in Boulder. After living in Los Angeles, New York and studying abroad in Spain, I saw the way fashion and design changed the way people felt about themselves and the world. I wanted to incorporate that sense of elegance and confidence in my hometown for clients,” says Nancy. A Bit Lovely originated in 2008 as a creative outlet while working for New York designer Natalia Allen as a fashion blogger. Honing her skills for more than a decade working in the arts, and influenced by her classes at Parsons New School of Design and the Rhode Island School of Design, in 2015 Nancy founded A Bit Lovely as the design business it is today. “My style is contemporary and elegant,” says Nancy. “My job is to design something based on a client’s needs and wants. If that includes a trend they love, I will incorporate it in a tasteful way. For myself, I do not follow trends. I think style is more lasting than trends.” We couldn’t agree more. In this spread, Nancy introduces a contemporary take on a fall colour palette, shying away from traditional oranges and reds and, instead, gravitating toward more timeless colours that can easily transition into other seasons as well. Rich shades of blue, soft gray, cream and gold accents are versatile enough that a deep burgundy can still make an appearance this season. “I think navy and black is a classic combination, and I wanted to work off that. I like adding in a rich cream colour and gold accents to add balance and texture,” says Nancy. “The palette is timeless enough that you can transition it into another season by adding a crisp white or peony pink and not be stuck with a bright colour that you might grow tired of in a year or so.” “Integrating some unlikely neutrals, a rich and complex blue,and some soft black into your wardrobe and home for fall is an elegant alternative to the traditional fall colours.”

Jenny Simpson Track star Jenny Simpson was introduced to running as an elementary student via an after-school cross country program, from there she “took off running and never looked back.” Earning a bronze medal in Rio in the 1500-meter run, Simpson’s athletic career has also seen strong performances in the 3000meter steeplechase, 800-meter run, 3000-meter run and cross country. Recognized for her smart decision-making on the track, Simpson relies on a healthy combination of strategy and instinct. “I usually know my competitors well and have a sense of how they might react to different race developments. I practice and visualize races so that, once the gun goes off, I don't have to make any decisions; I just have to react.” Simpson attended the University of Colorado, made the first of her three visits to the Olympics while a student there in 2008 and received The Bowerman award in 2009 for her impressive achievements as a student-athlete. “My best memories running at CU are by far the cross country seasons racing as a team. Both the men's and women's teams began the season with a team camp and often ended the season with conference and national titles. From beginning to end, each cross country season was so special to me.” Now that the Olympics have wrapped up, she’s looking forward to life in Boulder and time with family so she can meet her brand new niece and nephew. “Because of my schedule training for the Olympics, I wasn't able to travel to see them. Autumn, that magical time of year when pumpkin everything has returned, the air is crisp and cool and whistles blow and crowds cheer with the return of football. Indicative of fall nights on the couch cozily engrossed in the game, the return of football is—at its heart—an enthralling annual tradition. Take a moment to think about the images that

football, and sports in general, can actually project and conjure. Watching the game means witnessing athletic feats, but it also means experiencing powerful emotional snapshots of time in competition. It’s these intense feelings that local Boulder sculptor Gail Folwell looks to capture in her work. With large-scale pieces commissioned both publicly and privately across the country, from the Denver Art Museum to the Pro Football Hall of Fame to Vail Resorts, Folwell strives to physically capture intense emotion in her work. Q: TELL ME THE STORY OF HOW YOU GOT INTO ART AND SCULPTING. WHEN DID IT START, AND WHAT WAS THAT JOURNEY LIKE?

A: My folks fueled that fire when I was young. Mom and I made clothes, papier mâché, candles, clay pots and macramé. I made art from scraps of leather, steel shavings and wood. At about 14, I got into making sports-themed sculptures out of wire. My dad had all of these pieces in his radio station, and his friends started contracting me to do more. That “client” experience inspired a degree in graphic design. Years later, while guest teaching design at the University of Denver, I took a one-day figurative sculpture class with oil-based clay. The medium was my language. It changed the course of my career. Q: DO YOU FEEL YOUR CRAFT HAS EVOLVED SINCE YOU STARTED SCULPTING? IF SO, HOW HAS YOUR WORK BOTH CHANGED AND STAYED THE SAME?

A. Absolutely. The most profound transition was when I lost both of my folks. I think the pure emotion of it launched what was truly my own voice, and I unconsciously let go of any previously learned styles. But I also don’t ever want to stop evolving. I’m interested in learning in all areas and have launched a hardware line and greeting card app to put that into practice. All of my art projects inform and alter each other.

A: My style is a result of the subject matter in the act of sculpting. For example, in sports, for me, the subject is active, personal and intense. As an athlete, I love competition, adrenaline and musculature. The design is a matter choice, from silhouette and surface handling to exaggeration, but to make art you have to capture what it feels like. That’s just something that happens. All of my art, sports-themed or otherwise, is a reflection of experiences that inspire me. I sculpt what I feel. Q: YOU’VE DONE WORK FOR THE PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME AND SPECIALIZE IN SPORTS SCULPTURES. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THESE EXPERIENCES?

A: We all do what we do, whether it’s attend events, watch performances or visit places. We do it for the visceral effect, to feel the adrenaline, pain, strength or power of the experience. I make art for the same reason. Art is a way to revisit whatever moved me, and that's what I’m trying to create and share. Q: WHAT ARE SOME PROJECTS THAT YOU ARE LOOKING TO WORK ON IN THE FUTURE?

A: I love to see or hear that people personally connect with or relate to my art. Admittedly, sport can be a light-hearted theme that relates to many. When people personally connect to my more emotional work, it’s incredibly rewarding. I’d like to do more of that work in a public realm. Boulder Open Studios is happening in October, and that’s always a fun way to see which pieces in the studio connect with people.

It doesn’t have to be new to be perfect.

While the event promotes some of the best wines in the world, its goals are far more humble: to provide access to incredibly special wines at a reasonable value, to give to charities that lie close to the heart of Zimmerman’s business and to educate and inspire the festival attendees. For those not yet involved in the world of wine, the term “Burgundy” refers to wines that have been grown and produced in Burgundy, France. This region in eastern France is unique within the world of wines in that every vineyard, the boundaries of which were often marked off centuries ago by Cistercian and Benedictine monks, produces very different tasting grapes depending on soil quality, exposure to the elements, drainage, and other natural features of the land. This year’s Boulder Burgundy Festival will showcase wine in a multitude of different fashions. The festival includes two different seminars, two dinners, a lunch, a brunch and the Grand Wine Tasting with more than 200 different bottles available to sample. The festival’s special guests will include Etienne de Montille, producer of many of the Burgundies featured at this year’s festival and Jancis Robinson, one of the most prolific wine writers in the world. de Montille will be traveling to join the festivities from Volnay, France, where he owns and co-owns three separate wineries. Additionally, Robinson will be traveling from her home in London to attend the festival. Jancis currently writes for the Financial Times as a wine critic and has written a number of different books, five of which Zimmerman currently has on his desk for his personal use. Jancis also serves as a member of the Royal Household Wine Committee, the organization tasked with buying wine for the Queen of England. With the quality of wine available and the wealth of knowledge present, the Boulder Burgundy Festival is sure to be a weekend to remember. Proceeds from this year's event will support the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson’s, the Growe Foundation, The Family Learning Center, the Guild of Sommeliers and There With Care, yet another thoughtfully designed element of the festival. In short, the Boulder Burgundy Festival will be a celebration of Burgundies alongside the uniqueness of Boulder, an opportunity not to be missed. 1. Nikon D800 - This camera is a resolution monster that does extremely well in low-light without breaking the bank. It’s also light enough and small enough to carry while cycling, climbing and running—so as long as you have the proper bag for it. 2. Nikon Lenses - I prefer the fast glass and would much rather have a prime lens over a zoom. Having said that, I’ve made plenty of quality photographs with a plastic, $85 50mm lens. I very rarely shoot much wider than 24mm. I’m not a fan of distortion at all. 3. Apple MacBook Pro - I could use a PC, but I often work from coffee shops and everybody knows you can’t roll up to Boxcar with a Dell. 4. Profoto B1 - These are some really expensive lightbulbs, but for good reason: They have a beautiful quality of light and are super easy to use on-location. 5. Mountainsmith Pack - You need someplace to put all of this equipment and the Mountainsmith Pack is my go-to. It has plenty of room for all my gear (laptop and strobe included), yet it still flies overhead on the airplane, which is mandatory if you’re traveling with photo gear. 6. Nike Flyknit Chukka - The Flyknit Chukka has been part of my uniform for four years now. I wouldn’t say they are absolutely essential to being a photographer, but maybe if someone from Nike see’s this plug, I’ll get Flyknits for life. 7. Santa Cruz Stigmata - My greatest distraction from work. 8. Miniature Toy Fawn - An inside joke from a shoot that has turned into somewhat of a superstitious, good luck charm that never leaves my camera bag. Fun fact: Newborn fawns emit no detectable scent, which makes them the most innocent creatures known to man.
