For many of us this time of the year is filled with excitement. It presents us with re-evaluation; new horizons and goals to pursue. We approached this issue of Boise Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check a few boxes for the short term, but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life — business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do on some days that move the needle — it’s what you do on MOST days. For instance, taking a vacation every month might be financially and practically Impossible, but taking a short trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with cocktails and creme brulee every night isn’t best for your health, doing so once in a while is great! It is, finally, not the Sometimes choices that we make, but rather the Most of the Time selections that are important. So do plan both vacation and work to establish more regular downtime in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym and enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days—it’s what you do on most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you and the most wonderful new horizons.

Boise Nice Project President Rourke O’Brien has announced that January 15, 2022, is “Wave to a Stranger Day” where all Idahoans are encouraged to wave to a stranger. Boise is known for the neighborly and welcoming way that residents treat both each other and strangers. The city has recently experienced high growth from those choosing to relocate to Boise, unfamiliar with “Boise Nice” with a chance to give it a try. FIELD TO FORK FESTIVAL

LIME LAUNCHES GEN4 E-SCOOTERS

FARE Idaho has announced their first annual Field-to-Fork Festival, January 19th, 2023, at Jack’s Urban Meeting Place (JUMP) in the heart of downtown Boise. The Field-to-Fork Festival, an interactive trade fair, will bring together their independent food and beverage industry professionals—including farmers, ranchers/livestock producers, food producers and retailers—from all over the state of Idaho. Another highlight of the event is an educational component that will be open to the public: interactive panel discussions with our Field-to-Fork participants—from producers to purveyors that are integral to our Idaho food system. These panel discussions will feature everything Idaho from field to fork: farming, ranching, the art of butchery, winemaking, craft beer brewing, coffee roasting and processing, grain growing to pastry making, and much more. There will also be (3) chef-led classes in the JUMP! shared kitchen. The day will close out with a Field to Fork Celebration at Amsterdam Lounge with the Idaho Wine Commission and our Idaho State Legislators. The Magic Hour SKIERS AND SNOWBOARDERS CREATE STUNNING IMAGERY IN TGR’S 27TH ANNUAL FILM

Teton Gravity Research (TGR), an action sports media company based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, recently unveiled the trailer for its new film, Magic Hour. The film documents some of the most iconic skiers and snowboarders around the world—from North America to New Zealand—as the team captures awe-inspiring cinematography, groundbreaking action, and mesmerizing landscapes on this global adventure. “Magic Hour isn’t a particular time of day so much as it is these magical moments that we all experience on any given day, playing in some of the wildest places on the planet,” said Todd Jones, co-director of the film and co-founder of TGR. “We captured some of the most amazing skiing and snowboarding action in some of the most beautiful places in the world this past year, and we can’t wait to share the magic with the world.”

It’s early morning and a blustery 25 degrees outside. The wind rips through the snowcapped pines of the Boise National Forest. DeEtta Petersen dons four layers of clothing, a winter coat, and snowshoes and straps a 50-pound pulk to her waist in preparation for her journey to the Idaho City Backcountry Yurts. She is hauling toilet paper, cleaning supplies, a few tools, and snacks to get through the next couple of days in the mountains. “I guess it really is the challenge of it all that I like so much,” DeEtta shared. “I love being outside. I love that I can go to work and get a solid day’s worth of exercise. That’s what makes this so well-suited for me. I like using power tools, chainsaws, riding motorcycles, lifting logs and repairing what needs to be repaired. But really what it is, at the end of the day I feel like I did a good job.” The value of a hard day’s work was instilled into DeEtta and her five siblings from a young age. In her earlier stages of life, her father ran a successful vegetable farm in Walla Walla, Washington, where there was never a shortage of tasks for able-bodied children. “We topped onions, tromped spinach, weeded carrots, and set sprinklers. I even ran a dump truck once. Basically, whatever Dad asked us to do, we did.” After college, DeEtta worked in a variety of different fields including property management and fitness modeling. She was an MMA gym manager and always gravitated toward vocations that kept her active. In the early 2000s, DeEtta sought a change and was pulled toward Idaho’s beautiful natural landscapes and endless recreational opportunities. “When I moved here, I came with a pair of tennis shoes, a bicycle and a motorcycle and figured that would cover all my bases. Oh, and a pair of skis!”

With her skis in tow, DeEtta found her way to the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, where she’s worked for the last 12 years. When the yurt coordinator position opened up, she jumped at the chance. She now spends her days hiking and snowshoeing the trails of the Boise National Forest, outside Idaho City. Her weekly 3-day trips can accumulate up to 11 miles, “and depending on which yurt I am doing maintenance on, elevation gain on these hikes in the winter can be up to 1,000 feet.” She works long hours, about 10 – 12 hours a day. In the winter months, the yurts can only be accessed by snowshoe or cross-country skis and are heated solely by woodstoves. As you can imagine, a winter’s worth of woodstove use requires quite the lofty pile of wood. Between the six yurts DeEtta manages, they go through more than 120,000 pounds of wood per year. Luckily, she has a dedicated group of volunteers that spend their summer days helping her split all this wood. “I have a super amazing summer hire crew to help me with our program. Collecting six to eight

cords of wood for each yurt consumes a huge part of our summer, and consists of tree felling, liming, bucking, loading, delivering, and stacking rounds of wood at the yurts to prepare for our infamous ‘wood-splitting events.’ These volunteers also assist with repairs and maintenance of the yurts, trail assessments and clearing, and any other surprises that may arise. Without them, this program just wouldn’t work. “One time, I was hauling a 50-pound pulk up to the yurts with a volunteer to replace solar panel batteries when we got hit with a snowstorm. We had to break trail the entire time, drudging through snow up to our knees. It became a three-hour trek for 0.7 of a mile!” DeEtta said, laughing as she reminisced this day. “It’s a definite challenge but I get to work with cool people doing cool things that really matter to the state of Idaho. It’s kind of like breaking out of the box, ya know?” At 62, DeEtta knows that retirement is only a few years away, although that doesn’t mean she’ll be slowing down any time soon. “My objective is to pass the baton to my predecessor with the yurt program being in the best condition that I can legitimately have it in. I want to stay young and play hard, for as long as I can. I look forward to retiring, where I can come back as a volunteer and help with other yurt programs across the state. BEATING THE SEASONAL SADS

Light therapy is a relatively new treatment for seasonal affective disorder. It works by mimicking natural, outdoor light, which in turn can stimulate the release of the serotonin normally released by sunshine. Using the Happy Light for 15 – 30 minutes in the morning helps to reset and balance your circadian rhythm and improve overall sleep quality. According to a Harvard Health MD Michael Craig Miller, bright light (like in the Happy Light) works by “stimulating cells in the retina that connect to the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that helps control circadian rhythms.”

For many of us, winter months mean that we go to work in the dark and we come home in the dark. This drastic reduction in sunlight is one of the primary causes of seasonal depression, also known as seasonal affective disorder, appropriately acronym’d SAD. Idaho experiences one of the biggest fluctuations in levels of sunshine between summer and wintertime. Summer nights often last well beyond 10 PM and we are happily dosed with vitamin D all day long. In addition to stimulating the production and release of serotonin (otherwise known as the brain’s “happy chemical”), vitamin D helps protect the immune system, regulates proper insulin levels, and increases our overall energy. With such a dramatic decrease in sunshine, how do we combat the seasonal SADs?

TAKE VITAMIN D This is really the low-hanging fruit here, but a highly effective tactic. Specialists recommend taking about 3,000 to 4,000 IU of vitamin D per day during the winter months. However, some people may need more than this. As with all

I know, I know, we are all constantly being told to exercise. BUT exercise really does help to improve our mood. While it is best to get a minimum of 120 minutes of physical activity a week, you don’t have to drastically change your schedule to incorporate exercise into your day. Yes, joining a gym and hitting the tanning beds a few times a month (don’t over-do with the tanning beds!) has also been shown to increase feelings of happiness during winter months, but even just a simple afternoon walk can reduce symptoms of seasonal depression. Walking increases blood flow and circulation, which generates a positive response from the central nervous system. All forms of exercise (yes, even just simply walking) release endorphins, which are the brain’s natural happy drugs.

TREAT YA SELF! Another thing not to over-do, but spoil yourself a bit! Is there a certain fragrance of candle that brings you joy? Get one! Craving a mid-afternoon cookie? Have one! Take yourself on a date—wine and dine yourself with brunch and morning mimosas. Have a spa day. Give yourself a nice foot rub. Splurge on the fancy chocolate.

But you don’t need to spend money to treat yourself. Spend some time listening to music, watching the clouds, and allowing yourself time for rest. You work hard, you deserve this. I promise.

STAY LIMBER, STAY HYDRATED A simple mantra to live by is “Stay limber, stay hydrated.” Take a few minutes out of your day to stretch. Reach for the ceiling, touch your toes (or try to!), lift those legs up, put your toes in the air, get silly with it. Wiggle, jiggle, and dance. Motion and movement are so good for the body and, in turn, activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Plus, it fills your muscles up with blood, improving overall circulation. A properly circulated body is a happy body. Aim to increase your water intake by at least one glass. A good rule of thumb is to take your weight, divide it in half, and drink that amount in ounces daily. Did you know that dehydration is one of the main causes of road rage? Let’s minimize that as much as possible this holiday season (and always).

REACH OUT Talk to friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors. Smile at strangers. Write letters to penpals. Make genuine conversation with the grocery clerk and the bank teller. Celebrate all things winter at the 2023 McCall Winter Carnival from January 27th through February 5th. Carnivalgoers will enjoy winter activities including ice skating, dog sledding, snow bike races, snow sculptures and much more. Parades, fireworks, live music and theatre, and world-class dining thrill visitors from all over the world. Don’t miss the Beard and Leg Contest! An iconic Idaho event, experiencing the McCall Winter Carnival is the best way to relish everything snow has to offer. The McCall Winter Carnival traces its roots back to 1924 when the small town of timber workers created the Payette Lake Sports Carnival. In 1965 the community rallied to host a festival that would promote the area’s

pristine skiing. This culminated in the inaugural carnival which included a two-day event with slalom races, cross-country ski events, ski jumps, and snowshoe and snowcat races. Since then, this beloved annual event has exploded in both size and popularity. The town of 3,000 bands together to collectively host more than 60,000 visitors over 10 days. Event organizers spend months preparing to host the carnival so travelers to McCall can experience the warm small-town charm it has been cultivating for decades. Local businesses set up curbside attractions, vendors put up tents, and dozens of volunteers pitch in hundreds of hours. Rooted in rustic charm, the community and

the local effort to support each other is part of why the carnival grew to be so successful. The charm of the town is a glowing warmth to all who visit, and the chamber has worked hard to ensure that feeling endures into future years. McCall is a place of outdoor recreation. It’s in the bones of the town and the hearts of the people who live there. Winter Carnival was started to get people outside, break the cabin fever, and build community.
