P E R F E C T F IT Club Champion Brings An Elevated Custom Golf Club Fitting Experience to Eagle

Sixteen years after receiving my first golf lesson and set of hand-me-down clubs, I am still not entirely sure if I love or hate this sport, but I was certain it was time to find a set of clubs that would make the lifelong journey to hone my golf skills, a little easier. My quest led to Club Champion, an appointment-only studio in Eagle that offered a custom fitting experience and a 90-day perfect fit guarantee. Unsure what to expect, my eyes widened in surprise when I stepped into this pristine golf studio with my old set of clubs in tow. The equipment adorning the main wall was reminiscent of an art installment, showcasing pieces from a variety of brands that comprise more than 65,000 possible combinations of heads, shafts and grips and even more ways to personalize them! A putting area, lit up with natural light, was complimented with views of Pebble Beach and two simulator bays in the back of house make for a simple, yet effective and personalized fitting service. Braeden Dunten, a trained master fitter and builder, greeted me with a smile and a handshake. Braeden had communicated with me via email that he would be my guide for the fitting and was also immediately responsive to my message that I was running a couple minutes behind. After becoming acquainted and introducing my husband who tagged along to watch the experience unfold, and meeting Bill Greene, the second golfer and master fitter and builder, Braeden gave me his undivided attention for the next two hours. Initially, the process of a custom fitting sounded a bit daunting, but Braeden’s flexible, friendly, and educational technique made the process feel comfortable, seamless, and easy. After offering water and a friendly reminder to hydrate, I warmed up with a club of my choosing while he confirmed that the fitting would involve a series of test swings with multiple clubs of varying brands and styles while he observed my swing, analyzed the data, and asked me questions to get a better grasp of my internal experience.

Braeden was careful not to overwhelm with adjustments or information. He walked me through the important numbers on the simulator screen and explained his method for identifying the clubs that worked best for me. First, Braeden dissuaded me from putting all my focus on the distance, a number that’s easy to get caught up on, especially when trying out new clubs. One of the main reasons not to get hung up on how far the ball goes is the reality that estimated distances on simulator machines can vary depending on the monitor and tend to over- or under-estimate the measurements. A more accurate key to finding the best club match is to look at the efficiency of your golf swing known as the Smash Factor, or the ball speed divided by the club speed. The other key factor is consistency. While finding more consistent clubs does not fix a golfer’s swing, it does help eliminate one of the many variables that affect play and actually helps isolate problems with a swing that can be corrected through practice and lessons. While they do not offer private lessons, you may receive

some friendly tips during the fitting. For instance, Braeden also suggested using the same golf balls every round, further narrowing down the potential varying factors across each round you play. We started with a brand of clubs I had borrowed from a relative on occasion and loved. Braeden watched for outliers and calculated averages for comparison across the different clubs. The Trackman golf launch monitor measured my spin, distance and Smash Factor, as well as the trajectory of the ball. While it’s important to be aware that anytime you are testing a new brand or club, there are limited options because it’s impossible to have every option, Braeden noted that he’s found the test clubs sufficient to give each client a feel for that particular brand and type of club (e.g., wood, iron, driver). For instance, a 6 iron is used to help assess the irons “because it’s where people get a little uncomfortable.” Sweat beaded my forehead amidst the movement under the bright lights used to help the monitor see the ball, but Braeden was happy to take the A/C down a notch while I rested. After dozens of swings and going back and forth between clubs, my affinity for one particular brand became clear. Shots were more consistent and more efficient with that brand and, overall, the clubs felt the most comfortable of the available options. While there was surprisingly no pressure to make a purchase as the prices they offer for clubs are the same as the cost directly from the brands, I walked away with an order for a new set and a sense of newfound confidence in my golf game knowing that I would finally be playing with clubs that were the perfect fit for me! WCA helps victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault

"Everyone deserves to be in a healthy relationship," says Beatrice Black, Chief Executive Officer of the Women's & Children's Alliance (WCA), which provides safety to domestic abuse and sexual assault victims; healing through therapy services, support groups, and client advocacy; and freedom through life skills classes. “The WCA provides safe shelter to those fleeing domestically violent and abusive households, 24/7 hotline support, counseling —both individual and group sessions — case management, financial empowerment education, child care, safety planning and court advocacy,” shares Black. “In addition, we have a small prevention team that provides classes on healthy relationships to help our young people understand how to set boundaries and hopefully avoid getting into an abusive relationship. We also have a contract with Idaho Legal Aid to provide pro bono legal services to our clients.”

“We are here to serve EVERYONE, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, language or nationality,” states Black. “We will work to try and overcome any barriers (like finding interpreters so language does not prevent us from being able to provide a needed service).” WCA serves four counties representing thirty percent of Idaho’s population. The WCA provides services for women, children and men, noting that one in four women and one in seven men have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. People don't often associate violence or domestic abuse with men being victims. In fact, seventeen to twenty percent of the people the WCA serves every year are men.

“In 2022 we answered over 3,500 calls to our hotline, helped with the filing of 1,691 civil protection orders, providing, in total, close to 20,000 services to over 5,000 individuals,” shares Black. “These numbers do not include group participation numbers or the number of individuals served by our contract attorneys. Nor do they include the number of students impacted by the work done in small groups and classroom settings by our prevention team.” The need for their services is increasing. These statistics are shocking, but more disturbing are the stories behind the numbers. A few years ago, I brought a friend and her son to the WCA. She had been in an

abusive marriage for nearly 20 years. As we sat in the lobby, my friend gazed at a sign with the message, “Embrace Change.” Her voice barely audible, she said, “I stayed here with my son about 15 years ago.” We both knew this visit would be different. All WCA’s services are free. WCA is funded about fifty percent with grants and fifty percent with private donations. But grants are not always reliable. Clearly, the WCA does important work, but much of that work is dependent upon donations from individuals and corporations and volunteer hours. “We can use your time, talent and/or treasure!” states Black. “We are so grateful to our community for the many ways they support us. Dollars are always needed.” My friend obtained her divorce with the help of the WCA, breaking the cycle of violence which she endured for nearly two decades. One of the most impactful stories Black experienced working with the WCA is “the transformation I was able to witness of a single mom and her three daughters as they were able to benefit from all our services.”

I eliminate decor pieces that are displayed year-round to avoid adding clutter to rooms. Giving decor pieces or floral arrangements their own space to shine can pull the room together and make it feel very designed.

CATER TO ALL THE SENSES Don’t forget about the smell! Stocking up on candles that smell like the season is the last missing piece for a holiday vibe. The total sensory feeling of the holidays is what really brings a home to life, whether it's pumpkin spice burning for Thanksgiving or a fresh pine and cedar for Christmas.

STICK TO THE PALETTE As best as possible, I try to stick to each of the color palettes in my room. When it’s time to bring out pumpkins or holiday Santas, I stick to white and neutral or add in color pops of gold and silver to keep everything flowing. If I start to add too many primary colors, it ends up looking like a mash-up gone astray.

CELEBRATE MEMORIES The holidays are often bursting with family traditions and memories, and decor can reflect that, too. I have many items handed down over the years that I like admiring, but if they aren’t quite right for my room, there are options to bring the spirit of them to life. Framed holiday family photos in a black and white filter are an excellent way to tie in your history of celebrating in a subtle way.

LOOK TO NATURE Some of my favorite items to use for holiday decor come from a simple nature walk. Using actual items you find, or just getting inspiration from the outdoors is a great way to bring sights of the season indoors. For fall, elements such as branches, leaves and neutral gourds match with everything. For winter, I love using sticks with berries

Thanks to the hard work and collaboration of distinguished local business owners including Rex Chandler of Chandler’s Steakhouse and David Johnson of the Riverside Hotel and Meridian's Ling and Louie’s, an extraordinary transformation has been underway at a landmark location tucked along the Boise River Greenbelt. Rex Chandler’s vision for this historic building has become a revived space ready to welcome guests to the second Idaho location of Ling and Louie’s restaurant. With nearly half a century of experience, Rex Chandler is truly a gem of the Boise community and taking a private tour with him was a captivating moment. Coming full circle, Rex worked as a young busboy at the original Charthouse in the 1960’s in Newport Beach. Now, in the twilight of a fulfilling and successful career in the restaurant industry, he’s spearheaded the revival of a historic building in Garden City that originated as a Charthouse in 1976. Next to the Oregon Trail Boise River crossing, this location predates the Boise River Greenbelt, and opened two years after Rex became owner of his first restaurant in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1974.

The phenomenal restoration of this mid-century modern design would make Joseph Lancor, original architect and student of Frank Lloyd Wright, proud. Rex Chandler was entrusted by long-time friend and owner of Riverside Hotel David Johnson, who also owns the first existing Ling and Louie’s franchise in Meridian. Five years in the making, with a goal to construct a restaurant that would stand the test of time, Rex’s design was thoughtful and purposeful. He enjoyed having the freedom to not worry about scraping pennies together and being able to bring back a more clean and natural design to a beautiful historic building. Rex admitted he was not a fan of some of the “covering-up” of the design that was done during over the last several years. Paying homage to the original design, Rex shared that he wanted to “take it back to the clean, natural lines - the organic. This is a mid-century design that we’ve revitalized. It’s been a total ground-up restoration. The only thing that remained is really the concrete wall and beams of the roof/ceiling” to maintain the shape of the original design. CONTINUED >

As we concluded the tour, Rex showed off his adorable grandchildren as he searched for images of a gigantic fireplace that was an undertaking to remove but really opened up the space inside the restaurant. He also spoke the words that were evident from the beginning of the tour, “I love what I do. I love designing and building.” In addition to the restoration of the building, more connections were built with the community as the property has merged with Riverside Hotel and the owners of neighboring Telaya Winery, Earl and Carrie Sullivan, with the creation of a white wine blend to serve exclusively at this new establishment. In addition to bringing local businesses together, prior employees were also given the opportunity to uphold the backbone of the restaurant. Six integral employees from Joe’s Crab Shack have been training for this moment for over a year, including Chris Moore, the general manager, who has seen this building through since it was the Charthouse, which closed in 2003 to make way for the Crab Shack, a more affordable

family dining restaurant under the same Landry’s ownership. Amongst many other integral members of the team, Caleb Padgett, the regional manager, has also been preparing for opening day for over year and was eager to see this space welcome guests again. Returning to Ling and Louie’s for an evening dining adventure, I was welcomed by eagerto-please staff amongst the vibrant energy of the music and lively chatter that filled dining and lounge areas. My eyes were drawn up to the triangular vaulted ceiling, accented with natural woods and shiplap. Hues of red and botanical accents complemented and warmed the space inside while views of greenery and

the riverfront, through the wall length windows, further brought the feeling of the outdoors inside. Rex was in his element, greeting and conversing with tables of guests in his fedora, island style button-up and warm smile. An attentive yet fun and humorous server really made the night, along with tropical fruit and floral-accented cocktails, steaming-hot Asian-inspired dishes and sushi with a kick from the planter-converted sushi bar! As intended, the food was approachable, flavorful, Asian cuisine with American-flair. The Jeweled Beef spilling from a Chinese takeout box and the Orange Chicken atop a bed of crispy spinach were the fan favorites, but the cherry on top was the banana spring roll dessert which tasted like a banana-filled churro complimented with vanilla ice cream. A photo opportunity at the vine-covered backdrop near the entrance was the perfect way to commemorate the night and complete an experience in a space that remains a historic landmark and will surely hold a special place in the hearts of local Boiseans for years to come.

ARTICLE BY KURT ORZECK PHOTOGRAPHY BY BOISE BICYCLE PROJECT Sixteen years ago, Jimmy Hallyburton helped birth the Boise Bicycle Project (BBP), with a simple goal in mind: to serve, teach and engage the city’s bicycling community; and attract bike-curious residents and visitors. For a low-density city, with ample access to trail-filled foothills, and a raging river rimmed with the Greenbelt, encouraging locals and visitors alike to hop on a bicycle was a no-brainer. Soon, other bicycle enthusiasts will have to take the baton from Hallyburton to help the Boise native achieve BBP’s ambitious goals. As the collective announced earlier this year, he is retiring. “One of the reasons I decided to leave, and felt comfortable leaving, is that I know when I walk out the door, that BBP is going to go on and do bigger and better things,” he said, “and to know that I got it to a spot where, when I leave, it will continue to grow.” He added: “Our mission was pretty consistent from the get-go. It's to promote the personal, social and environmental benefits of bicycling and to make sure that everyone has access to a bicycle, bicycle repair and safe places to ride.” With a little more prompting, the BBP co-founder and executive director revealed that he has also harbored an even loftier goal over all these years. “We have this vision of transforming Boise into the bicycle capital of America,” he disclosed. “Boise has the potential to be [it,] and we think the BBP is in a unique position to help make that a [reality]. For the most part,

you can ride in Boise year-round. We're pretty flat and have proximity to amazing mountain trails within a five-minute ride from downtown Boise.” BBP launched in October 2007 and relocated to the former site of the Boise Rescue Mission the following year. “When I started BBP, I really had no idea what a nonprofit was or how to run one,” Hallyburton admitted. “I relied on support and mentorship from other leaders, volunteers and nonprofit folks in the community. But because I didn’t know a lot, we did a lot of things our own way.” Also in 2008, BBP first opened to regular volunteer times and free DIY repair. "The space was destined to be demolished, but the owner, Clay Carley, allowed us to squat there for 1.5 years," Hallyburton reflected. "In July 2009, we moved all of the stuff (100s of bicycles and tools) to our first official location on Lusk St., where I became BBP's first paid employee." Over the years, BBP not only sustained itself and grew into a larger operation with staff, it transformed into a vital community asset. Accessible to anyone with a bicycle and the willingness to learn and volunteer an hour or two of their time, the cooperative functions as both a triage for broken bicycles and an unofficial learning center with a “teach a man to fish” business model. In a nutshell, when a bicyclist brings in their defective single-track vehicle, they donate some of their time to help with BBP’s needs. On a wintery day in January, for example, this writer spent one hour testing and filling tire tubes with other volunteers. It took roughly the same amount of time to spruce up the bicycle with a functioning front wheel, wornout brakes and a kickstand, with a BBP attendant providing instructions and guidance along the way. BBP’s reach extends well beyond its bustling headquarters. In reaching out to the refugee community, BBP “got to play a big role in helping them get into after-school programs and college, and also to work at BBP,” according to Hallyburton. The bicycling cooperative also stages the annual Goathead Fest,

(The crew that participated in the effort collected 50,000 pounds of goat heads, according to Hallyburton.) Not to be overlooked, the BBP co-creator also successfully prompted city officials to embrace the Pathways Master Plan, which Hallyburton created and would bequeath 112 new miles in pathways to Boise. To be fair, Hallyburton didn’t come up with the idea for a bicycling co-op on his own, nor is Boise the only city that boasts one. Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Tuscon are home to similar bicycling cooperatives, for example. Still, what Hallyburton helped build in Boise is one of the city’s greatest assets, alongside Bogus Basin and the Greenbelt. For this reason, Boise bicyclists will be forever grateful to Hallyburton and his growing team of employees and volunteers. What he helped create isn’t just a gift, but also a towering legacy. “To know that there's 16,000 kids who have bicycles and might not have been able to have them otherwise,” Hallyburton explained, “and knowing that they are going to grow up riding around their neighborhoods the same way that I did when I was younger, that makes me so happy and proud.”

Loving Yourself in Dark Spaces I opened the door of the tank just a crack and peered out into a world of light. It felt strange and new as I pushed the door open all the way and settled myself to stand again for the first time in nearly two hours. I took in everything like I had never felt it before: the cool air on my salt-speckled skin, the light of day coming through the closed blue curtains, the

colorful art lining the walls. I slowly stepped out with one foot, then the other, and reached for a nearby towel. I smiled widely as the sensations of life continued to present themselves to me. I felt reborn. And in a way, I had been. I have been floating in isolation tanks for over a decade. Like most people, I often

struggle to quiet my mind, and meditation can be challenging for me. In the tank, everything falls away. Eventually, the thoughts slow and calm themselves. You stop worrying about what to make for dinner tonight or the weird way you choked on the word ‘hello’ to a coworker last week. The frustrations of debt and feelings of mounting anxiety disappear into the darkness, along with everything else. Ember Maucere had a similar experience when she first floated. “I came out in awe, absolute awe. All I could do was nod for a while before I spoke, I was just taking everything in. The flowers, the pool, the world. It was everything I had hoped for,” she said. “We came back home, finished the remodel, and in September 2014 I bought my tank.” Ember, founder of Reflections Float Center, aspired to own a float tank for over seven years before she actually floated herself. “I worked as a medic at the state prison in maximum security,” she started. “My coworker was deployed to Afghanistan and an interim was appointed in their stead. I always admired his quiet strength and surety. At the time, he shared that he was saving up to buy his own float tank. I had never even heard of one.” Ember, with her ever inquisitive mind, spent hours researching float tanks and their benefits. Often called sensory deprivation or isolation tanks, she read countless articles on the positive effects that floating had on people with anxiety, cancer patients, PTSD, trauma, arthritis, depression… the list went on and on and on. She decided, right then and there, that this was what she wanted to do. She wanted to own a float tank and offer it to the people in her community.

“My husband and I started remodeling the house and setting everything up before either of us had even tried it. I just knew this was what I was supposed to do.” Ember was a medic in the Air Force for five years before working in prisons for more than a decade. At the same time, she worked for the Boise VA Medical Center and had another job harvesting eyes for corneal transplants. All the while, she dreamed of floating and what it could do for not only her, but the people she had worked with and worked for. She saw firsthand the traumas of war. The pain of imprisonment. And tirelessly, she continued to raise her two sons while working multiple jobs doing things that most people could never even imagine. All the while, Ember was in deep discussion with Lee and Glenn Perry, owners of the Samadhi Tank Company, about what it would take to buy her own tank. After nearly a decade, Ember decided the time was right and she and her husband hopped on their motorcycles for a road trip to Grass Valley, California, where Lee and Glenn lived. “Part of what I found in there was healing,” Ember said, with tears welling in her eyes. “I stopped eating my feelings. I used to weigh 250 pounds.” She continues, “I got over my claustrophobia, which is a common experience that I hear a lot. But if you’re brave enough to close the door, brave enough to turn off the light, you will be rewarded. Every time.” Not long after she first floated, she put her savings to work, alongside an inheritance left from her father’s passing. “I bought my tank, spent a thousand dollars on Epsom salt, and then the money was gone.”

She opened Reflections Float Center in her home in 2014 and immediately started taking small business classes at the library. “I had no idea what I was doing. I had never owned a business! But Caleb Barham, who owned Drop of Calm in Nampa, was a huge help! I got a lot of guidance from him. Truly, so many people have helped me refine my practice.” She continued to speak, and through impassioned tears, she shared stories of people she has impacted. “I have a client who has been floating nearly weekly for almost two years. The first time she floated, I approached her at the door as she put her shoes on and asked her how it went. She was just opening and closing her hands. Opening and closing. I asked her if she was okay and she said, ‘This is the first time I have been able to do this in years.’” And those stories don’t stop. Floating impacted Ember so much that it made her want to change her name. Born Beth Widau in Richmond, Indiana, Ember Maucere is now so grateful to be a business owner that has a positive and meaningful impact on the Treasure Valley.
