EAGLE PLEIN AIR FESTIVAL

The Olympics of painting in Southwest Idaho, the not-so-simple act of painting outdoors

ARTIST'S PALETTE | ARTS + CULTURE
BY STAFF WRITER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE OLSEN + PROVIDED
18

There is an exciting art event coming to Southwest Idaho. October 7th through the 14th, the Eagle Plein Air Festival turns Eagle into an outdoor living art gallery when more than eighty artists come to paint the Idaho landscape. This nationally recognized event brings painters to learn, paint and compete in a variety of events. Highlights include artist workshops, free community art events, quick draw competitions, nocturnal paint out, art sale and wet paint auction.

The festival, founded in 2014 by Finer Frames owner Meg Glasgow, was created to highlight the unique art of plein air painting. “This event brings patrons and artists together unlike any other art show,” says Meg. “This stand-out event turns painting into a spectator sport in spectacular fashion.”

With the support of the Eagle Arts Commission and the Plein Air Painters of Idaho, this festival is a unique art competition, show and sale that attracts professional artists and art patrons to Eagle.  Now in its 9th year, the Eagle Plein Air Festival continues to attract artists from across the US and Canada to this great community. It is the largest art event of its kind in Southern Idaho and has earned a reputation for being a high caliber event as recently highlighted in the December issue of Plein Air Magazine as a featured event in the Northwest.

This free festival, promoting the art of outdoor painting, provides opportunities for people of all ages to interact directly with artists. Community members are invited to watch the painters at each of the daily Paint Out locations and during the special Quick Draw competitions. There are also free arts education and learning opportunities. Professional artists offer free daily painting lessons during the lunch hour on the patio at Finer Frames in Downtown Eagle.

All are invited to…

Explore the Treasure Valley with your family. Each day of the festival, the artists gather at a special destination to paint the Idaho landscape.

Watch art being created from start to finish. During the Quick Draw competitions, the painters have just 2 hours to complete a painting. It’s thrilling to watch.

Attend a free art lesson by local professional painters. Each day during the noon hour an artist teaches a free art demonstration at Finer Frames.

Be sure to Visit the art sale at the end of the event. It’s your chance to purchase the great paintings artists have been creating all week long.

The week-long festival begins early Saturday, October 7th.  Downtown Eagle is buzzing with excitement for the Saturday Market, which makes it the perfect time for the Quick Draw event. This “quick draw” has no shoot-out in the street. In this event, artists are armed with easels, paints and brushes. The painters have only two hours to complete a painting while patrons look on.  The wet paintings will be hung outside the building at Finer Frames. Look at them all and pick your favorite.

Celebrate with the artists Friday evening during a special awards reception at the Gallery at Finer Frames from 5:00pm – 8:00pm. The outstanding paintings that artists created during the week will be recognized with awards and ribbons. You can party with the artists while enjoying live jazz music and refreshments.

The festival celebration concludes on Saturday, October 14, 2023 during the Eagle’s Harvest Festival. Purchase your favorite painting from over 200 works works of art, enjoy live music, street fair, kids activities and so much more!

If you’re wondering what is “plein air”, En plein air is a French expression that means “in the open air.” Plein air painting is the not-so-simple act of painting outdoors. Artists must handle shifting light, fluctuating temperatures, wind gusts, inclement weather and more.  Add the pressure of a Quick Draw competition and it becomes the Olympics of painting in Southwest Idaho.

A wonderful festival! Well organized, with plenty of beautiful painting venues on the schedule. The Boise area fall colors were inspiring! The camaraderie with other painters was fun and encouraging. I'm already looking forward to this next year!  – Artist, Tracy Wilson

INSPIRED BY elevating homebuilding

Exceptional homebuilding surpasses construction; it embodies values that shape timeless living spaces. Rooted in the ethos of "More Thought Per Square Foot," this approach reflects an unwavering commitment to imbuing purpose into every corner of a home, transforming mere structures into meaningful sanctuaries.

In the realm of extraordinary homes, a delicate equilibrium emerges between functional design and distinctive character—a manifestation of homeowners' aspirations. Achieving this delicate harmony demands the fusion of traditional efficiency with bespoke craftsmanship. The result? Homes that envelop residents in comfort while standing as embodiments of their individuality.

Under the leadership of President Jenna N. Englund, Berkeley Building Co.'s homebuilding vision extends well beyond design. It encompasses integrity, responsibility, and community development. Their work transcends the act of erecting physical structures; they architect legacies for generations. Their influence stretches through partnerships, including St. Jude and the Ronald McDonald House, acting as catalysts for positive change that uplift communities and inspire progress.

As we enjoy the Fall Parade of Homes , we meet with companies that serve as beacons of these ideals, illuminating the path in the construction industry. These enterprises seamlessly weave thoughtful design, masterful craftsmanship, ethical principles, and community engagement. Their creations transcend mere houses; they sculpt transformative living experiences.

Exceptional homebuilding embodies an ongoing quest for enduring quality—an intricate fusion of form, function, and positive impact. These visionary companies redefine homebuilding as an art form, crafting spaces that captivate the eye and resonate with profound significance. For more information, visit BerkeleyBuildingCo.com .

a perfect pairing of fine wines and food

CHANDLERS DISHES EXCLUSIVELY CURATED AND PAIRED WITH TELAYA WINES

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Chandlers Steakhouse has been a downtown Boise staple for nearly 30 years. While it’s known for prime steaks and fine seafood, experiencing their winemaker dinner is an exceptional treat. It’s also a perfect testament to the Boise mentality that I’ve grown to love: locals supporting locals. Not only do the consumers of the community support local with pride, but local businesses are showing support for one another by using and promoting each other through collaborations like this magical experience. This experience offers a unique opportunity to taste dishes exclusively curated for this dinner and to be paired with specific wines provided by the winemaker. On this particular occasion, Telaya Wine Co. owners Earl and Carrie Sullivan provided wines for the chefs, inspiring the creative feat that transpired over the course of the evening.

Once granted a “golden ticket” to this event, there’s an expectation to experience fine dining and delicious local wine, and the anticipation builds as the menu is not released prior to arrival. As soon as we stepped across the threshold, my friend and I were greeted with impeccably

dressed servers bearing shiny platters of hors d’oeuvres and a refreshing glass of rosé that paired well with the sweet and salty cantaloupe spheres showered with a fun crispy layer of turmeric rice and prosciutto. My friend’s face lit up at the sight and taste of the delicate Kumamoto Oysters, well-appointed with champagne mignonette and sturgeon caviar. After sampling sashimi-grade ahi tuna poke perched upon an ahi wonton, we were seated in a twilight-lit private dining space with white tablecloths and empty wine glasses waiting to be filled by Devin Zendel, the Chandlers wide-smiling wine director.

Down-to-earth and yet rightfully proud of his wines, Earl introduced himself and his wife before he and General Manager Dave Boyle described the food and wine journey on which we were about to embark. Over the course of the next two hours, an explosion of flavors ensued on our tongues. We began with summery, crisp white peaches atop perfectly dressed greens paired with a golden-colored, brightly acidic, and aromatic Viognier. Next came a bowl of rich and hearty French-style cassoulet filled with duck, white beans, chorizo pork belly, and guajillo peppers. This resonated feelings of warmth and comfort while paired with a smooth, berry, and spiced Telaya Syrah.

After a taste-bud cleansing intermezzo, we were served a luscious, grass-fed filet with potatoes bravas spiced with chipotle, alongside an inky Petit Verdot that blankets the mouth with velvety cherry cola flavor, while hints of blackberry jam intrigued my nose. Earl also shared some wine knowledge and presented his larger-than-life-sized bottle of wine, brought out especially for this evening to share with all of the guests. Who knew that larger wine bottle sizes were inspired by biblical names! Our last course of the evening embodied summer fruit at its best: A crisp, flaky tart filled with red cherries, elegantly topped with mascarpone and white chocolate mousse. My stomach thankfully saved room for dessert because there was not a bit left on my plate from the dish that washed down nicely with Telaya’s Snake River Valley Malbec. As delightful as the evening had been, an encore at the Chandlers bar to have a taste of their infamous chocolate soufflé was an indulgent yet incredibly satisfying way to end the evening!

“After a taste-bud cleansing intermezzo, we were served a luscious, grass-fed filet with potatoes bravas spiced with chipotle, alongside an inky Petit Verdot that blankets the mouth with velvety cherry cola flavor, while hints of blackberry jam intrigued my nose.”

And while the food and wine were clearly the stars of the show, it was the people behind the curtain that made this evening extra special. In addition to the outstanding service that Chandlers provided, we were fortunate to sit with Dave, Chandler's general manager, and Earl, owner and winemaker, at our table as they also partook in the meal. I relished in the conversation with Earl, who was happy to share more about his journey that led him and his wife to their role today as talented Idaho winemakers. Like many, his tale did not start in the vineyard, but the important part is that it's where he ended up! My friend and I laughed and shared stories, making new friends with our tablemates as Devin, the wine director, poured the burgundy-colored liquid into our glasses. The last surprise was getting to meet the talented chefs who left the kitchen to say hello and for us to give thanks for all of the hard work that led to the thoughtfully curated and flavorful meal.

If your taste buds are watering and you’d like to have a chance to embark on this local fine-dining journey too, odds are good there will be another opportunity to partake, as the relationship between these local businesses has only continued to grow. Telaya recently welcomed the Chandler's team into their winery for wine education to further expand their knowledge of the local wines. It really is a match made in heaven! Earl likes to say he has a face for radio, but he really has a face for wine! And Rex Chandler has really ingrained himself into the Boise community with all of the support he provides to local businesses while churning out incredible dishes for us to enjoy. Look for future winemaker dinners on ChandlersBoise.com and TelayaWine.com websites and social media accounts, so you don’t miss this unforgettable experience!

Celebrating Idaho Cidery

IDAHO CIDER PRODUCERS WIN REGIONAL AWARDS

It may be a well-known fact that Idaho is one of the top hop producers in the U.S. (number two in 2022)! But beyond a delicious haul of hopped beer, Idaho boasts some truly incredible cider companies across the state as well. And this year (like many years passed) several local cideries placed in the NW Cider Cup Awards including Cedar Draw in Buhl, Highpoint in Victor, and Meriwether in Boise.

Cedar Draw Awards: Gold in the Specialty category for their Sour Empress Cider and Bronze in Botanical Hopped category for their Imperial Citra Kissed Cider.

Proud owners and husband-and-wife duo Emily and John Mason opened the doors to Cedar Draw in 2020 and offer not only delicious cider but also wood-fired pizza! The pair received their license to ferment in 2019 but as they geared up for increased production, 2020 happened. They shifted gears and focused on the development of a tasting room and are so glad they did!

“We opened in November of 2020 and haven’t looked back! We are truly a mom and pop,” shared Emily. “I make the cider, my husband sells the cider, my dad helps with the orchard, and we have our kids work with us when we make wood-fired pizza several times a month.”

“We're so proud of how our tasting room has evolved and what it means to us and our community,” Emily said passionately. “We frequently receive comments on how amazing the vibe is here. It’s the perfect place

for people to meet and share life with each other. Many friendships and connections have been made here at Cedar Draw Cider. My husband John does such an amazing job making everyone feel welcome and important.”

Started by brothers Alex and Andrew Perez, Highpoint Cider has been serving the Gem State since April 2021.

He continues, “Honestly, our biggest challenges have been around producing enough cider to consistently

meet demand. There are multiple times a month when we have to push to 24-hour production operation in order to keep batches moving toward final packaging. Basically, it's the cider production equivalent of running your car's RPM at redline, so we're really excited for some equipment upgrades we'll be implementing in the next few months that will drastically increase our production capacity.”

On the front-of-house side, Highpoint’s taproom manager has turned the cider house into an amazing gathering place for the local community. Located in the stunning Teton Valley, their Victor cider house has something going on nearly every night of the week including trivia, live music, paint & sip events, food truck pop ups, collage art nights, and so much more. Meriwether: Gold in the Fruit Post-Fermentation Addition category for the Plum Dandy Cider and Silver in the Botanical Hopped category for their Hop Shot Cider.

Like our other two winners, Meriwether is also a family operation started by the Leadbetter family (Molly, Kate and their parents Gig and Ann) in 2016 in Garden City. Their goal was to create a brand that inspires adventure by making an elevated, easy-drinker cider. Safe to say, they’ve nailed it! Meriwether has been a household name by cider lovers across the state for nearly a decade now.

Their two popular taphouses (located in Garden City and Boise) see thousands of people a year and serve not only their own mouth-watering varieties, but also cider from across the Northwest, including partnering with Cedar Draw and Highpoint on events and tap-offerings.

Meriwether makes a variety of different ciders ranging in sweetness and hoppiness, meaning they’ve been able to convert many a beer-drinker to the cider side. MeriwetherCider.com

Holiday H abits Healthy

When thinking about the psychology behind eating, we are constantly bombarded with restrictive diets and contradictory information about what we should put into our bodies. It's no wonder that so many individuals struggle to have a healthy relationship with food and often feel confused about how, what, and when to eat.

The fast-approaching holiday season adds another challenging layer to eating healthy with seemingly endless amounts of mouth-watering indulgent bites. So why not start to change how we think about what we eat before the holidays begin?

Local registered dietitian and nutritionist Deeen LaJoie loves empowering people and leaving them feeling hopeful that they can reach their goals with reasonable nutrition and lifestyle changes. In preparation for the holidays, she offered some encouraging words that can help improve our relationship with food year round, along with tips to enjoy the most wonderful time of the year guilt-free!

CREATING A HEALTHY PLAN

Ditch the overly restrictive diet plans that leave us craving what they say we can’t have. Instead, create a healthy sustainable nutrition & lifestyle plan that works all year round but also makes room for a piece of birthday cake, a holiday meal, or other special events to be celebrated thoughtfully without guilt. What’s interesting about this approach to healthy living is that when you give yourself permission

to enjoy that piece of birthday cake, we remove it from the pedestal it was on in our mind and it becomes just another choice.”

FORGETTING ABOUT “ALL OR NOTHING”

People often take an all or nothing approach to healthy eating. What I mean is that if they "mess up" one day or one meal, in their eyes they have failed and might as well eat everything in sight. At its worst, this can lead to a binge session. This comes back to the importance of incorporating healthy habits over the course of time and giving yourself permission to enjoy, without guilt, occasionally partaking in a "treat.”

AVOIDING FOOD LABELING

Food labeling (and personal labeling) can lead to overly restrictive eating plans followed by giving up on health goals, yo-yo dieting, and disordered eating. We work to get people out of this habit of labeling and of beating themselves up over "bad" choices and into a process of mindfulness where they can make a conscious decision to indulge or not without giving it a good or bad label.

EATING MINDFULLY

Practice mindful eating habits every day. Learn to listen and respond to hunger and fullness cues. Appreciate that the food you eat is what fuels your body's ability to breathe, move, and think. Find pleasure in nourishing your body with healthy foods. Take time to enjoy your food. Don’t expect every day to be perfect and recognize it takes time and patience to solidify new habits.

10 EASY TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS HEALTHY:

• Plan ahead–don’t come to the party starving…or thirsty.

• Focus on the social experience… friends, family, activities… instead of the food.

• Be the guest who shares the gift of healthy food; it can be as simple as a beautiful vegetable platter or fruit plate.

• Put some distance between you and the buffet table.

• Keep the water coming–plain, sparkling, or with a twist of lime and a splash of cranberry.

• Choose a smaller plate if you can and think in terms of a couple bites rather than big servings…you can always go back for more of that favorite dish.

• Choose wisely…if you don’t love it, leave it.

• Share a dessert.

• Quit when you’re comfortable, not stuffed.

• Relax, slow down, and enjoy yourself! Holidays come with more than their share of stress and anxiety, both of which can trigger us to reach for more food than we need. Give yourself permission to enjoy!

Roasted Sweet Potato Salad

(serves 4-6)

SALAD INGREDIENTS:

• 2-3 Sweet potatoes (Leave skin on; wash well; cube 3-4 cups into bite-sized pieces)

• ½ cup toasted pecans (or chopped almonds, cashews)

• Avocado oil spray

• Garlic salt blend

• Chili powder (optional)

EAT RIGHT | HEALTH + WELLNESS 44
Fresh Fruit Platter

• 3 cups of Arugula or Spring Mix salad greens

• 1 - 1-1/2 cups of pomegranate seeds or fresh blueberries, blackberries or raspberries

DRESSING:

• ¼ cup lime juice

• 1/3 cup quality olive oil (virgin 1st cold pressed)

• 2 teaspoons agave nectar or honey

• ¼ teaspoon salt

• A pinch or 2 of chili powder (optional)

DIRECTIONS

1. Sweet potatoes: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread pieces onto baking sheet in a single layer. Spray with avocado oil; sprinkle with garlic salt, and chili powder (if using). With clean hands, toss potatoes to make sure the seasoning is on all sides of the pieces. Roast in oven about 20 minutes (or until tender and golden brown); stirring after 10 minutes. Set aside to cool.

2. While sweet potatoes cook, prepare the salad dressing. Put all ingredients in a salad dressing shaker or food processor and mix well. Refrigerate until ready to serve your salad.

3. Lightly toast pecans in the oven or on the stove. Lightly coat the pecans with avocado spray. Sprinkle with garlic salt and chili powder, and again, toss to make sure the seasoning is on all sides of the pieces. Be sure to keep an eye on these guys while cooking; they go from perfect to burnt very quickly!

4. When you’re ready to serve, place your salad greens and cooled sweet potato cubes in a glass salad bowl. Add salad dressing. Toss gently. Add berries or pomegranate seeds; gently toss again just enough to mix them throughout the salad. To finish, sprinkle toasted pecans on top!

THE MEN BEHIND THE GRILL

A Closer Look at the Grill Dads

It’s rare in this world to encounter people with such a deep passion for their interests that they make it a goal to not only share their hunger, but to also teach others how to view it through their eyes. To shift their perspective and shake things up in the best way. Mark Anderson and Ryan Fey—affectionately known as The Grill Dads—have taken their love of grilling and put it on a nationwide—nay, global—stage.

But beyond just enjoying the art of the grill and a love of delicious food, they are both fathers and aspire to change the narrative of what it means to be a dad in our contemporary world.

CONTINUED >

49 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOISE OCTOBER 2023

“Our mission is much bigger than just sharing our love of grilling. We are really looking to redefine the modern dad,” shared Mark, co-host of Food Network’s The Grill Dads and co-author of The Best Cookbook Ever Written by Two Idiots. “In television, movies, and social media, dads are represented as sharks at work and idiots at home. We want to show the world that dads are smart, loving, a big part of their families, and generally work to improve the world.”

Mark, originally from upstate New York, is now a proud Idaho resident. And he didn’t hesitate to dive right into the Treasure Valley community. He and his wife, Sarah, purchased an established Idaho business, UltraClean, that works to restore residential and commercial damage from water, wind, fire, and mold. UltraClean has been a Treasure Valley staple for nearly 20 years and Mark and his family have continued to carry that torch for over 6 years and counting. Mark has also served on the board of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Idaho since 2019 and is now chapter president.

The other half of the iconic Grill Dads duo is long-time friend and business partner Ryan Fey, who currently lives in Los Angeles and works in creative and strategic consulting for a variety of clients including the LA Rams, VaynerMedia, and Starbucks. A Midwest

native from Pleasantville, Ohio, Ryan and Mark actually met while attending Ohio University more than 20 years ago. It was here that Ryan earned his Bachelor of Science in Journalism and has since excelled in the industries of advertising, public relations, product development, and more. In an article published by Ohio University, Ryan (class of ’98), gave the following sage advice to the incoming class of 2018, “Come out of college ready to rock ‘n’ roll fail. The people that truly excel and succeed are the ones who push all fear of failure aside.”

Authentically honest about his career tries and attempts, Fey is the embodiment of what it means to learn from your failures and to keep trying. Because each of his previous failures has led him to where he is today: a highly recognized celebrity, author, business owner, and family man.

While Food Network is no longer a part of their ongoing Grill Dad journey, the duo has kept busy. “Most of the content that we have created over the last few years has been in partnership with brands and posted on shortform social media platforms,” said Mark. “This year we are making a big investment to launch our own series of full-length content on YouTube. It's called Dad's Guide to the Universe. We're bringing in a great team to help us build this out, including folks from Eater and Complex.”

Both Grill Dads are highly active on social media including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. As recently as August 2023, Ryan shared an update on what the two have been up to. Mark and Ryan have been grilling it up all over the world, including a Grill Out with Geico for the Wrexham Association Football Club, the third oldest professional association football team in the world. And of course, traveling to promote their book—The Best Grilling Cookbook Ever Written by Two Idiots—which was released in June 2022. The book, as they describe it themselves is: “63 recipes, countless grilling tips, and terrible dad jokes.” Which we all agree sounds like the perfect combo of entertainment and cookbook.

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET 01

8 WAYS TO ORGANIZE AND INJECT STYLE INTO YOUR SPACE

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying these guidelines will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

FACE CLOTHES THE SAME DIRECTION

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

BY KIND AND COLOR 02 03 04 05

NEGATIVE SPACE HIDDEN STORAGE

Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-toceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for out-of-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

USE REAL ESTATE WISELY ORGANIZE
Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. A large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

UPGRADED HANGERS

The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner!

07

BAG & SHOE STORAGE

Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions.

Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.

06 08

MAKE A STATEMENT

Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.

It’s Pumpkin Bread Season

The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort

Ingredients:

• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

• 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon nutmeg

• 1/2 teaspoon ginger

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin

• 1 1/2 cups sugar

• 2 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil

• 1/2 cup melted butter

• 2 eggs

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside.

3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup.

4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined.

5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy.

6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended.

7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal.

8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.

THE FLAVOR OF FALL

Apples are the trademark fruit of fall, and with the many varieties to choose from, there is an apple that is sure to please any palate. They can be included in both sweet and savory dishes and are delicious and incredibly healthful. We all have heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” While they aren’t a cure-all, apples are packed full of polyphenols, antioxidants, vitamin C, B vitamins and fiber. Make the most of autumn’s best produce and the flavors of fall with these simple recipes.

APPLE GALETTE WITH CARAMEL DRIZZLE

Easier than pie but with all the same textures, this gooey warm dessert is sure to please. For simplicity, this can be made with a premade crust.

INGREDIENTS:

Crust:

• 1 1/2 cups flour

• 1/4 cup sugar

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cubed

• 1/4 cup iced cold water

Filling:

• 2 apples, peeled and sliced into thin slices

• 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar

• 1 1/2 tablespoons flour

• 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice

• 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

• Caramel sauce

• Optional: 1/4 chopped walnuts or pecans

INSTRUCTIONS:

Crust:

(Note: If running short on time, store bought crust works great, too.)

Mix flour, salt and sugar together in a bowl. Cut in the butter. Add water and mix until moistened. Lightly knead the dough and then form into a ball. Next, flatten dough into a thick circular form and refrigerate for one hour.

Filling: Mix the apples, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar together in a bowl.

Assemble and Bake:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the dough into a circle and set on parchment paper. Arrange apples in center of dough, leaving about one inch of space for the edges. Fold crust over the apples and press to seal edges. Drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle with pecans or walnuts. Bake for 35 minutes. Serve with caramel sauce and ice-cream.
