Summer Bucket List Much like winter holidays, summer vacations sneaks up on me. It’s there, on the calendar, every year, but yet when Memorial Day weekend arrives, I’m never really prepared for it. When I was young, I used to create a Bucket List filled with items that I wanted to do during the summer breaks. It usually began with lofty ambitions of traveling to far off places, but my pragmatic parents would tell me those plans would have to wait, and we would opt for closer-to-home trips. Some of the best memories are of summer days — of backyard barbecues, making s’mores by a campfire, spending time by a river or lake, and, of course, the neighborhood ice-cream truck. For summer 2022, I am adding some new items to my to-do list, a jet boat ride with my grandkids, a moon-lit night hike at an area park. I may even try my hand at fishing, or finally muster up the courage to get on a stand-up paddleboard. Summer is full of promise. It’s a blank canvas of long sunny days, warm weather and the invitation to dive in. I hope you check off your bucket list of activities while making memories with friends and loved gathered around you.

HERE COMES THE CASH BALANCE PLAN Cash Balance Plans solved the complexity issues associated with Defined Benefit Plans. Cash Balance Plans can provide business owners the same large contributions as traditional Defined Benefit Plans with more manageable, easy to understand administration. In a Cash Balance Plan, each participant has an individual “account balance.” Each year the participant’s account is credited with: • A cash balance allocation: An annual contribution to the account (can be a different amount for different individuals and flexible from year to year). • An interest credit – Interest earned on the account during the year, generally based on a fixed percent. A participant can receive credits within their account until retirement or until the plan is terminated. After leaving the plan, the participant or plan owner can rollover their entire account balance to their personal IRA.

WHY NOT JUST START A 401(K)? 401(k) plans are a great way to utilize tax-deferred savings. Unfortunately, they also have their limits, primarily, the plan’s maximum annual contribution. For 2022, the maximum individual deduction within a 401(k) plan is just $67,500. In a cash balance plan, you might be able to contribute and deduct approximately 5 TIMES that amount annually. Depending on the individual’s age and income, cash balance plans can offer more than $300,000 per year in benefits. Furthermore, you can pair a cash balance plan with your existing 401(k), allowing you to get the best of both worlds!

WHO IS A GOOD FIT? Cash balance plans are a great fit for all companies looking for large tax savings and significant retirement benefits. They are particularly advantageous for owners of small or owner only companies who don’t wish to pay outsized income taxes on their business profits. Cash balance plans have the flexibility to target individual employees with specific benefits and can be combined with a 401(k) profit sharing plan. They can provide significant benefits to owners and highly compensated employees with minimal business costs.

It was inevitable, the newly opened Chocolat Bar and Olive and Vyne’s Wine Shop are side by side in Eagle, and like strong magnets, the forces of wine and chocolate clicked and snapped together. Jason Stack, owner of The Chocolat Bar in Boise and now in Eagle, suggested we choose the wine first, taste it, and then he picked out specific chocolates to try. He was spot-on as he expertly paired unique flavors of fruit or warm spices with the chocolate, some a complete surprise. During our tasting, Jason tells us that there are more than 300 compounds in chocolate. Likewise, we share that there are more than 300 compounds in the skin of a wine grape. Whew, that’s a lot of chemistry and complexity to sort out and make user friendly. After sampling five bottles of wine and a pound of chocolate, how could we not succeed? And how nice to go home with leftovers!

HERE’S WHAT WE DID: Round 1: Cloudveil Chardonnay, not heavily oaked, worked really well with the dark chocolate Nutmeg Drop. There was a wow factor in this pairing. Lesson learned…a white wine can pair nicely with dark chocolate, and specifically with the warm spice flavor of nutmeg. Round 2: Trimbach Gewurtztraminer, with a dark chocolate Cinnamon Drop. A surprising and delicious combination that made the cinnamon extraordinarily expressive. Again, the wine and the cinnamon were good dance partners that made this pairing an awesome treat. Round 3: San Rocco Valpolicella Ripasso with dark chocolate Mocha Drop. The wine was low tannin, silky textured and with a port-like taste that paired nicely with the espresso flavors. The lingering finish in the wine delivered dark chocolate, raisins and espresso. Our learning curve was to stay away from highly tannic red wine. Round 4: We first thought tawny or ruby, but opted for the lesser known white port. Broadbent White Port was a real eye-opener when paired with a Chocolate Dipped Glacé Orange. Your search for one of the most invigorating yet relaxing summer recreational activities ends here. Last year I discovered the incredible freedom of Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) and it has become one of my favorite summer adventures. I can still recall the serene feeling of gliding over deep blue water that’s just inches beneath you while the sun glistens above the calm, open water surrounded by majestic mountains and trees. Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) has its roots in Hawaii, but Idaho is the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature’s beauty. And while you can technically SUP all year round, summer is the perfect time to escape the heat and cool off while partaking in this unique experience among the numerous bodies of water in and around the Treasure Valley. In addition to being immersed in nature with family and friends, SUP is easy to learn and can be a great low-impact workout. You can get out with an experienced friend or test out this watersport with a lesson at Idaho River Sports if you want to feel more prepared before getting out on the water. SUPs are a great alternative to a kayak if you’re looking for flexibility when out on the water. Traditional SUP involves standing and using a paddle to propel through the water, but you can also paddle seated, lay down and relax, or even use your board for some invigorating yoga on the water. If you’re ready to see Idaho from a new perspective, you can rent or purchase a board along with a paddle and leash. Inflatable SUPs are a great option that provide more ease in transporting for travel. With safety in mind, Idaho also requires that you take a personal flotation device and whistle aboard your adventure. If your board is 10+ feet in length, you’ll also need to snag an inexpensive invasive species sticker. SUP lessons and rentals are conveniently available at Idaho River Sports in Simplot Water Park and rentals from Sandy Shores can be taken to other nearby locations within Lucky Peak State Park.

ALIVE AFTER 5 A 35-year tradition, Downtown Boise’s Alive After 5 concert series operates on select Wednesdays from June through August. Occurring outdoors at The Grove Plaza, it is always free and fun. This year includes The Suffers, Deep Sea Diver, and Wavves.

RIVERSIDE HOTEL The Riverside isn’t just a hotel. It’s a multi-faceted event space containing three different concert rooms: The Sapphire Room, Bar365, and Sandbar. You’ll find a wide array of music here, from eclectic jazz to bluegrass to singer-songwriters.

CHANDLER’S STEAKHOUSE Chandler’s downtown is widely known for amazing food and live jazz. “We are the only venue in the valley, that I know of, that is seven-nights-a-week live jazz,” says music coordinator Mike Rosenthol. “The music is meant to enhance the experience.

DELUCA’S Italian fine dining restaurant Deluca’s is located inside BODO. Inhabiting the spot that Ha’Penny previously called home, Deluca’s hosts live music every weekend. This summer, you’ll have the chance to see Frank Marra, Michele Eastland, and Lisa Bittick.

KIN This newer downtown restaurant is known for their PiKINic music event series. In the past, KIN has hosted performances by internationally renowned artists like Doug Martsch and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, as well as up-and-coming locals like Sam Tru and Eilen Jewell.

CRAFT LOUNGE It’s a bit of a drive, but Craft Lounge is worth the traveling time. Located in the bottom level of the old Masonic Temple in Nampa, Craft boasts a speakeasy aesthetic without the exclusivity. “We love drinks. We love spirits and we love people,” says owner Nathan Boban. At Craft, you’ll

find jazz bands and solo artists pounding away on the venue’s baby grand piano.

THE REEF Known for its seafood menu and fun drink options, The Reef off 6th and Main also hosts live music. From DJs on the roof to live bands rocking out on the stage indoors, you might hear ska, EDM, or just plain rock ‘n roll at this popular spot.

JAK*S PLACE Another Nampa restaurant where every weekend is “Weekend Music @ JaK*s.” They regularly hosts artists like Ashley Roze, Blaze & Kelly, and Darian Renee. “JaK*s Place is a feel-good kind of place,” says Darian Renee. “Everything is delicious. You’re going to have a great meal and hear some great music.”

IDAHO BOTANICAL GARDENS What do Alice in Chains and the Avett Brothers have in common? For starters, they’ve both performed at Outlaw Field, the concert space belonging to the Idaho Botanical Gardens. Big-name artists give outdoor performances for the lucky Boise residents who get their tickets in time. When shows sell out, some folks allegedly watch from the foothills nearby.

There’s something different about McCall. Time seems to slow down a bit in this two-stoplight town. It’s not for a lack of things to do. Rather, the endless possibilities for how to spend a long summer’s day allow time to work differently in this quaint but adventure-filled lake town. While you refresh and recharge, you can make what feels like a month’s worth of memories in a remarkably short amount of time. As a remote mountain town, McCall lacks some of the conveniences people find at home, but those who’ve fallen in love with the area have found that the slower pace is exactly the point. It gives people the chance to unplug and refocus. And it creates an uncommonly friendly vibe. It’s not unusual for the owner of a coffee shop or artisan bakery to inquire about what you have planned for the day as they hand a delicious scratch-made treat

For the planners among us, there are plenty of reservation-worthy activities to fill out an itinerary. Choose from one of two unique forest zipline experiences or one (or more) of the five golf courses in the area, rent a paddle board and explore the meanders at the tip of Payette Lake, take a two-hour sunset adventure with McCall Lake Cruises, or book a whitewater rafting trip on the nearby Salmon or Payette Rivers. There’s no shortage of activities for those who like to simply wake up and see where the day takes them. The McCall area boasts three noteworthy (and free) evening summer concert series. “Tuesdays on the Terrace” finds music lovers grooving at the Ponderosa Center’s lakefront concert venue. Head to Tamarack Resort on Thursdays for the Sunset Concert Series or kick off your shoes and celebrate the arrival of the weekend with the TGIF Summer Concert Series in Brundage Mountain’s grassy alpine amphitheater. At the end of the day, no matter what you’ve done, be sure to find a peaceful perch to enjoy an alpine sunset. Double Sizing the Fun THE FIRST OF SEVEN PLANNED ROARING SPRINGS PHASES TO OPEN IN THE SUMMER OF 2023 Construction is underway on an expansion that will bring some exciting new water rides to Meridian. The Roaring Springs waterpark will expand onto the 12-acre lot east of Roaring Springs, increasing the park size by 40% over the next decade. The Northwest-themed addition will include an interactive play structure with seven slides, an action river, an activity pool, a new restaurant, the waterpark’s first bar, additional parking, and other amenities. “This expansion will make Roaring Springs one of the largest waterparks in the U.S.,” said Roaring Springs CEO Pat Morandi.

Camp IdaH2O is a giant interactive water playground featuring seven slides, and some of Idaho’s most iconic symbols. The most unique feature is the world’s first dumping potato bucket, which splashes 650 gallons of water onto fun-seekers below. Whitewater adventure meets waterpark fun in Class 5 Canyon, Idaho’s first action river. Class 5 Canyon will be half as long and twice as wide as Roaring Springs’ current Endless River, with a zero-depth entry beach.

Critter Crossing is an activity pool with forest-themed floating features for kids to balance across with overhead ropes, water basketball and other play elements for skill-based recreational fun. The Geyser Grill & Bar will offer Idaho fare with an Asian flair, including burgers and fries, pizza, rice bowls and fried potstickers. Grown-ups can enjoy adult beverages for the first time at Roaring Springs. “I am excited to see the continued investment that will nearly double the summer fun at Roaring Springs. They are a great community partner who has been committed to providing safe entertainment for our families, but also job opportunities for our youth,” said Mayor Robert Simison.

According to the Idaho STEM Action Center’s executive director Dr. Kaitlin Maguire, STEM education is important to the state’s future, offering students opportunities to engage in original research projects aligned with their interests and to meet and learn with other motivated students in their area. “The quality of the research that Idaho students present each year never ceases to amaze me,” Dr. Maguire says. “The experience students gain by participating — by thinking creatively about real-world problems, seeking solutions, and explaining their findings succinctly — will prove invaluable when they enter the workforce.” STEM jobs in Idaho are projected to grow 15.4 percent by 2030, outpacing the national average of STEM job growth at 10 percent.

Tucked between the body shops, breweries, and artist’s lofts on Garden City’s Chinden Boulevard are a half-dozen signs reading “tasting room.” The urban wine scene in this 4.3-square-mile suburb is one of Boise’s best-kept secrets — and now you can taste your way through it in style, from the back seat of a bright-blue 1976 VW bus. The bus is the centerpiece of Feelin’ Groovy Tours, a one-woman operation launched in Sandpoint in 2019. For “Chief Groovy Girl” Michelle Moreau Keener, her bus (nicknamed Georgie Girl) is more than a vehicle to ferry groups of two to seven. She’s a character all her own. “She’s a brick house. She’s big. She’s bold. She’s a bread box on wheels!” Keener said, noting that Georgie Girl “makes everybody smile.”

The bus certainly worked its magic on her owner. In November 2019 Keener packed up her HGTV-recognized touring business and drove Georgie Girl into a better life. She left Sandpoint’s long winters and an unhappy marriage with a peace sign swinging from her rearview mirror. Today, the certified international tour manager spends her days digging into Boise-area history. She started sharing it on tours like Summer in the City and the Hooked on a Feelin’ Urban Wine Tour this June. “I love to see [guests’] faces light up when they have those ‘ah-ha!’ moments where they learn something new,” she said. Keener’s joy in her work shines from the moment you board the bus for your four to five hour wine tasting adventure. After an admonishment to buckle up “low and tight across your hips like a Michael Phelps swimsuit,” she cranks the 70s tunes and starts sharing tidbits of Garden City’s past. Trundling along Chinden, you learn about Idaho’s Jack the Ripper, the history of wine growing and horse racing in the region, and the Idaho Pinball Museum — a local gem hidden in plain sight. Each $129-per-person tour includes tastings at three urban wineries like Split Rail Winery, Cinder Wines, Rolling Hills

Vineyard, and Telaya Wine Co. You can also choose to purchase only the groovy ride and history lesson ($80 per person) and pay for flights or glasses as you go. Tipsy guests can add a charcuterie board or buy additional bites on route. The variety of wines on offer in Garden City is matched only by the range of tasting room aesthetics. You might quaff a pour of the 2021 Yin + Yang orange wine in the neon-and-punk warehouse of Split Rail (Tasting Room Manager Keagan Capps calls this a “mind game wine” for its color and citrus taste) or sip the 2018 Mascot blend of malbec and cabernet sauvignon in the Tuscan atmosphere of Rolling Hills. By the time you reach your final destination — perhaps curled under a blanket on Telaya Wine Co.’s patio, enjoying a final sip of 2021 Grüner Veltliner in the firelight — you’ll be warm from the inside out. After hours of drinking and laughing in her company, adventuring with Keener in Georgie Girl doesn’t feel like riding with a teacher. It feels like riding with a friend. If you plan to explore the Idaho wine scene this summer, look beyond Sunnyslope and add a trip with Feelin’ Groovy to your hit list. You’ll be surprised just how much Garden City has to offer.

THE SIREN CALL OF THE DRIVE-IN In 2018, Ada County Highway District ripped into the asphalt of the State Highway 44 and Veterans Memorial Parkway intersection. The project held up traffic for months and demolished a local landmark, Smoky Davis. But one business stood firm at the edge of the devastation: Viking Drive-In, a burger stand in operation since the early 1960s. Four years later, “The Viking” still serves classic fare surrounded by honking cars and fresh concrete. Its survival is part of a longlived trend: The decades go by, but Boise’s burger stands — including Hawkins Pac Out, Fanci Freez, Westside Drive-In, and Big Bun Drive-In — remain. Apart from fry sauce, what secret sauce keeps these drive-ins afloat?

NOSTALGIA YOU CAN EAT For Bill Hawes and his wife, Alison, who purchased Fanci Freez in 2017, the drive-in’s appeal was deep-rooted nostalgia. “My mom went to Boise High in the ‘50s and it was like her favorite place,” he said, adding that Fanci Freez’s cross-generational charm and reliably good food have inspired repeat business since 1947. “... We’re close to Boise High, so we get a lot of students [who] come for lunch. There’s a connection made at that age group, and those people come back.”

DRIVE-THRU TIME MACHINES Adam Chandler, author of “Drive-Thru Dreams: A Journey Through the Heart of America’s Fast-Food Kingdom,” offered a macro view. “We are very much a culture of convenience, but we also know what we like. That can be meaningful when you’re on the road and you want something you know is going to taste the way you like [it]. It’s also meaningful in a time where there’s a lot of upheaval and you want something comforting that reminds you of a different time.” Louis Aaron’s experience backs that up. He has been chef/owner of Westside Drive-In since 1994, where the restaurant’s crackling speakers and shouted orders harken back to ‘57. “Every time there is a crisis in America — when 9/11 happened, or the financial crisis in 2008 happened, or COVID happened — our sales just go through the roof. People want somewhere they can go and have fun and escape that everyday crisis mode,” he said.

give it a leg up. Idaho’s cattle provide key ingredients: beef and cheese for burgers, and ice cream for shakes. “A hamburger is synonymous in a lot of ways with American life and American food,” Chandler said, pointing to the humble burger’s portability and association with the frontier.

LOYAL TO LOCAL Teamwork has also played a role in the drive-ins’ success. Aaron recalled a time in the ‘90s when competing owners banded together as the Independent Drive-In Restaurants Association. They used their power to win better food prices, but the partnership dissolved by the early 2000s. Aaron also credited customer support for helping Westside thrive and expand, saying, “I think Boise has a unique attachability to local restaurants.” In a time when more and more chains are arriving in the City of Trees, we’ll raise a fry to that.
