As a Native,
I know the Treasure Valley. I know Idaho. “When it came time to sell the home we’ve loved since we built it a decade ago, we wanted someone who’d treated it as the home they loved & “wanted the best for”, too. From the minute I spoke with Ian Brown, I knew he was that professional. Ian’s communication style is clear & so responsive, we always felt in the know & like we were his number one priority. His community reputation is worth gold itself, as when we needed a few items “punched” to get our sale price, Ian arranged quality professionals to make our home ready. He’s also an impeccable planner, so we knew what steps we were on & what was coming next during the whole process, from readying our home for the market to signing our closing docs, again with local professionals. If you want no-stress, high-trust process for the sale or purchase of Treasure Valley real estate, Ian Brown is the best hands you could put yourselves in!” - Kerri M. Eagle, ID

BALLET IDAHO’S NEW TRAINEE PROGRAM Ballet Idaho’s Trainee Program is diving into its second year, abundant with inspiration for the next generation of dancers. After observing deficiencies in dancers from some traditional conservatory-style programs, Ballet Idaho Artistic Director Garrett Anderson sought to improve the trajectory of training by developing a program that allows dancers to transition from student to professional effectively and efficiently. Though only in its second year, the program has a proven track record with two former trainees receiving apprenticeship contracts with Ballet Idaho for their 2021-2022 season, with plans to hire yet more into the company this year. In the words of Anderson, “While many students come to us with solid training, we work to further that training and teach them the adaptive skills they need to become artists. In this way, this program has proven to be a vital bridge between student and professional. It has been wonderful to see these young dancers grow as artists while sharing our studio shows and stage with the professional company, affording them invaluable experience as they prepare for promising professional careers at Ballet Idaho and elsewhere.” For more information visit BalletIdaho.org Credit: Quinn Wharton

playing a new story BOISE MUSIC WEEKS AIMS FOR ANOTHER CENTURY AS IT RETURNS TO LIVE EVENTS ARTICLE BY JORDAN GRAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHIL WHITE, CSIPHOTODESIGN
Once upon a time, Eugene Farner realized Boise needed strength and healing after a deadly pandemic and devastating war. Knowing music could grant both, he took his idea for a special event to the town leadership for support. More than a century later, Boise Music Week aims to provide strength and healing to Boise once again. The three-week performing arts celebration will culminate in the production of the fairy tale musical Into the Woods. Carrying on Farner’s vision is the Boise Music Week Executive Board’s mission. The all-female board, led by President Shannon Smurthwaite, also features Vice President Roxanne Coate, Secretary Michelle Wickard, Treasurer Melody Arsenault, and Past President Beverly Schumacher. “We’re excited to welcome our friends, donors, volunteers, and, of course, our performers back to our venues,” Smurthwaite said. “We’ve missed the human connection the last two years.” The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 meant the board had no choice but to cancel all events. When 2021’s outlook for live events wasn’t much better, the board got to work. “Boise Music week is all about tradition,” Smurthwaite said. “We had to accept that there would be changes and use our creativity to come up with an alternate approach.” The solution was two weeks of genre-spanning music offered online.
“I was so proud of our organization,” Smurthwaite said. “Many of our board members don’t even like to use email, but we all learned together and ventured into the unknown. We became tech-savvy very quickly because we had to. (We) provided our musical offerings any time, day or night, to anyone in the world to watch us during the two weeks. We actually had people in Europe who watched Boise Music Week last year!” This year, live events are back. They’re also, as they’ve always been, free. “You can find something for almost every taste during the three weeks,” Smurthwaite said. On the menu are some new offerings. “This year, we have a new Boise Music Week Youth Choir,” she said. “Under the direction of Emily Godfrey, and with more than 40 youth voices, you can watch their live performance at JUMP on May 5.” Directed by Larry Dennis, Boise Music Week’s musical, Into the Woods, managed to retain 14 of its original 19 cast members. They started their journey through the deep, dark forest with auditions back in 2019. “To say these actors are ready to get on with the show is an understatement,” Smurthwaite said. “They’ve been eager to share this musical for two years and soon they’ll get their chance.” CONTINUED >

Interested in getting involved or lending your support? “We love our volunteers, and with our expanding events, we can always use extra hands,” Smurthwaite said. “We understand the ability to donate may be limited, but it’s through contributions that we can ensure we’ll be around for another 100 years.” You can find information on boisemusicweek.org or offer donations at performance venues. Much like the fairy tale wishes in Into the Woods, the wish for Boise Music Week is continued support so it can carry on “happily ever after.” “We don’t want to see this century-old tradition evaporate,” Smurthwaite said. “It really is something that makes the Treasure Valley special. If you’re new to the area or have new neighbors, we hope you will attend and join us as we celebrate music and the arts.”

Treasure Valley Women Share Wisdom and Encouragement in a Love Letter to Themselves
The growth we seek often comes from a healthy perspective of all of our life experiences, even the unpleasant and painful ones. Boise Lifestyle asked women to write a note giving their younger selves some advice. By turns powerful and wise, funny and heartfelt, the responses were as diverse as the women themselves. But they all shared one common theme: every woman was overwhelmingly kind to their younger version. Writing a note to your younger self sharing advice, wisdom, and perspective can be a great reminder of what led you to where you are today. Try writing one yourself, and share your note with all of us on #BoiseLifestyle

You have no idea what career path you want to pursue right now, and that’s absolutely okay. In fact, your personal motto of “fall in love with as many things as you can” leads you to a life full of challenges, happiness and fulfillment. Keep loving yourself, keep absorbing the knowledge you learn, and don’t beat yourself up for trying a variety of paths and interests, because it leads to a well-rounded, creative, and ambitious person. There will be times when you are frustrated that your heart is so involved in everything you do and you wish you could turn it off. This actually becomes your super power! YOU have the opportunity to be all that YOU can be! I can tell you that as long as you follow the Golden Rule – goodness will come to you. Now, remember, there may be many times in your life where things might not go the way you hoped they would, and it may be very disappointing. You may not see it at the time, but just know that goodness and other opportunities will come because of this. A note to my younger self, age 20: You are so much smarter than you realize. The world is going to look a lot different in 10 years, so stick with what brings you true happiness. You will trim down your friend circles and feel more empathy than you ever thought possible. While it feels like judging eyes are on you, remember they are focused on themselves even more. Don’t burn bridges, but don’t put energy into repairing a lemon either. Seek fulfillment in the experiences AND the alone time that comes your way. Oh, and another note from the future: remember social media isn’t real and invest in Bitcoin. LyonButt.com

WCA Executive Director Beatrice Black
There has never been a time where women haven’t faced challenges. But, whether now or in the future, there has also never been a time where women haven’t fought to have what they deserve. Whether it’s one woman standing up, or in unity, women always continue moving forward. In the Treasure Valley, the Women’s & Children’s Alliance, or WCA, has provided aid to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence since the 1980s. The organization has recently started testing out using only its initials, standing for “What Compassion Accomplishes.” Their mission, “safety, healing, freedom,” also acts as their process for clients. Their shelter is open for physical abuse victims in confidential locations and offers 24-hour hotlines monitored by those trained to direct clients to the best resources. They also offer court advocates to help victims understand what’s happening during their court hearings. “Abuse is not just violent,” WCA CEO Bea Black says. For the last 14 years, Black has helped pave the way for the WCA and its clients. Also among the team is their communications manager, Dara Barney, who puts her marketing skills to good use. Both Black and Barney have been a part of many fundraising events to spread awareness. During Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the WCA campaigns for “Denim Day” to strike up conversations about victim-blaming and honoring its survivors. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the organization hosts the Clotheslines Project, where T-shirts are displayed to voice the stories of survivors. Both Black and Barney are
blessed to use their skills for a giving organization. Barney says, “We are here to hear you.” The WCA has acted as a trail of destiny for many. Chloe, a Boise State University student, and her mother were taken in by the WCA after surviving a serious situation. For six months, they received financial and housing counseling, and helped Chloe’s mom find a job. During their time, the mother/daughter pair were welcomed with warm, open arms. “It helped us feel like we had a normal life,” says Chloe. Now, years later, Chloe is a senior graduating with her degree in Communications. She’s a member of the Alpha Chi Omega (AXO) sorority, which raised $10,000 for WCA through their Mr. AXO fundraiser in March. Chloe is now an intern at the WCA, and she hopes to continue working for the organization. “I’ve always called it fate, because I actually don’t remember how we heard about WCA. I just knew it was a place that could help us. Now I’ve come full circle with the organization and I couldn’t be more grateful.” Over the past few years, the WCA has opened its arms to men and other groups, and in 2020, 11% of their clients were male. “Everyone deserves to be in a healthy relationship,” says Black. The relationship between Black, Barney, and Chloe resembles friends eager to serve the community rather than coworkers clocking another day’s work. Their devotion and determination to do whatever it takes to help keeps the organization successful. “The WCA is the light at the end of the tunnel,” says Chloe. Wildflower Walks It’s a bounty of beauty when the wildflowers bloom at various parts of the valley during peak flowering season from April – July. Lower elevation hiking trails get blooms as early as April and the blooms continue through July in the higher elevations. Walking on mountain hillsides through fields of colorful mountain lupine, bright gold arrowleaf balsamroot, and many other gorgeous wildflowers, is an ‘awe’ inspiring experience.
Fox Creek Trail
Mountain Biking The valley is a mecca for mountain biking with over 450 miles of bike friendly single-track trails plus plenty of scenic gravel backcountry roads for those who prefer a different type of riding. In the early spring, April and May, the best dry mountain biking trails are just outside of Hailey. Later in the spring and summer, the trails in the northern part of the valley open for all types of two wheeled adventuring.

The Idaho Wine Experience SAMANTHA MAXEY’S SNAKE RIVER WINE TOURS PROVIDES THE ULTIMATE WINE EXPERIENCE IN SOUTHWESTERN IDAHO ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY LOEB
Idaho is no longer just known for its potatoes, thanks to the unofficial queen of Snake River Valley Wine Region, Samantha Maxey. In just three short years, Samantha’s company, Snake River Wine Tours, has been voted a 2021 Top Ten Wine Tour by USA Today! Moving from the Midwest to Marsing, Idaho in 2016 with husband and animal expert Corbin Maxey, Samantha’s passion for immersing herself into the local community took hold. With her prior experience in the fine dining and hospitality industry, Samantha enjoyed exploring the local wineries of the Sunnyslope Wine Trail and eagerly accepted a job at one of her favorite wine boutiques. Over the next year, Samantha created personal Idaho wine country tours for family and friends, and quickly recognized the opportunity to turn her passion into a full-blown business. Taking that leap of faith in 2018, she launched Snake River Wine Tours with the purchase of their first Sprinter Van, and she quickly became an influential entrepreneur in Treasure Valley. The company was expanding quickly when the pandemic hit in 2020. While it was a terrible blow for much of the tourism industry, business boomed for Snake River Wine Tours. Samantha united with local wineries to offer creative, safe, and fun outdoor experiences for people seeking a relaxing escape. Her resourceful thinking led to continued growth. By May 2021, they acquired new vehicles and added staff to reach more people seeking a unique Idaho experience. These year-round customizable tours transport you in just 40 minutes from Boise in one of their luxury vans.

Stocked with all the goodies to enjoy an afternoon sipping on a selection of local, award-winning reds and whites, you’ll enjoy good company and the picturesque views among four wineries. Samantha attributes their success and growth to their “top notch” customer service. Guests enjoy not just a personal designated driver, but a great host, someone who’s both educated and funny. Samantha creates brand awareness for local wineries and continues her own wine education to create the best experiences for her guests. Her warmth and passion for her business shines through. Proof of her lasting impression is that the majority of her guests are repeat clientele, including three guests she recently welcomed back for their tenth tour. Samantha sees the winery scene flourishing, and is proud to be an instrumental part of that growth. She recently started Snake River Charcuterie, a company that will offer delicious food on her tours and to the local wineries. “It’s so important to take a risk and do what you love,” she says, “Idaho wine industry is unlike any job or industry I’ve ever been part of. Everyone is just so welcoming and supportive.” That includes guests who want to be a part of this amazing experience in Snake River Valley Wine Region. Samantha says, “I could not imagine doing anything else.” Snake River Wine Tours offer daily tours among the 15+ wineries along the Sunnyslope Wine Trail. Fierce Fitness THE BEAUTY OF STRENGTH TRAINING

G E T ACT IV E | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S
Imagine feeling strong, confident, and empowered. You have created a lifestyle that involves your fitness routine, and have built healthy habits for stamina and vitality as you take on the demands of life. You are stronger and fitter than ever, pushing yourself in workouts, and you feel that self-esteem every day. Your routine consists of lots of walking, activity with the kids, full body weight training, and micro-workouts (5-20 minutes) throughout the week. You have days where you are not in the “workout mood,” but you get it done anyway. You also have days where you feel invincible. Hold on to that feeling. The lifestyle you have created is because you are consistent. There are no quick fixes. You simply get the job done. You need your CONTINUED >

fitness routine. Do not ignore it. It is vital to your health and wellness. Find the routines and modalities you enjoy and be consistent. There are many types of programs: circuit training, weight training, CrossFit, endurance sports, yoga, Pilates, group classes, boxing classes, spin classes, and more. Eliminate excuses and simply make it part of your daily ritual. The results will be increased stamina, a stronger and more durable physical body, improved endurance, and a more resilient mindset. You can work out to get leaner or lose weight; however, you are more likely to succeed in the long term when you make it more about creating a healthy lifestyle and focusing on daily habits. If you’re unsure where to start, keep it simple and start with a walk around the block. Grab some dumbbells, do some curls and shoulder presses and do some squats. It does not need to be complicated for it to work. You simply need to be consistent. If you are looking to “step it up” and take your fitness to the next level, consider investing in a personal trainer who can coach and guide your fitness program.

You do not have to imagine this way of life. Just start executing. Take the first steps. Get the ball rolling. Create positive momentum. Most importantly, be consistent. Not perfect. Consistent. You got this! These “micro-workouts” are short and simple workouts between 5-10 minutes that you can do throughout the day. Here is an example: • 30 jumping jacks • 10 bodyweight squats • 10 push ups • *repeat circuit for 5 minutes Justin Levine is the general manager at The Gym on 8th and Main. CHERIE BUCKNER-WEBB TALKS LEGACY, POLITICAL CAREER, AND HOW IDAHO CAN BE MORE ‘HUMANITY-CENTRIC’ ARTICLE BY JORDAN GRAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY CITY OF BOISE + PROVIDED
Cherie Buckner-Webb didn’t start out with the intention to leave a legacy. But a shortlist of her titles shows her legacy is already established. There’s senator, community activist, consultancy founder and principal, international speaker, award winner, member of multiple community boards, museum founder, singer, wife, mother, and grandmother. That list will keep growing because Buckner-Webb doesn’t plan to slow down. “I retired from the Legislature,” she said. “But I really don’t plan to fully retire until I can’t move. I’m not ready to be idle.” When Buckner-Webb was a child, she saw public service, rather than politics, in her future. The fifth-generation Idahoan watched the state’s first civil rights march be planned in her parents’ living room. “There is a legacy throughout my family of service,” she said. “Also, my mother’s credo was ‘Disturb the peace.’ And where the peace needs to be disturbed for the better, let’s do it.” Political aspirations still weren’t front of mind when balancing a full-time job with single motherhood to two sons. Buckner-Webb’s breakthrough moment came after she was asked to suggest potential candidates for District 19. Around that time, she gave an invocation preceding a speech by Native American activist Amy Trice. Bucker-Webb struck up a conversation during a break. Trice’s inspirational

“Ask for what you want. If you don’t ask, the answer is ‘no.’ I think that’s one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned anywhere.”
speech extended into their exchange, where she told Buckner-Webb, “You have work to do. You need to make a decision today.” While she hadn’t mentioned the political office, Buckner-Webb said the message was clear. “It felt like an immediate calling, and it was what I was supposed to do,” Buckner-Webb said. “It was on the heels of hearing another woman who was maybe not looking for the work, but the work was for her to do. I turned to Nicole LeFavour (an Idaho Representative and Senator) and said, ‘I’m going to run for that office.’” Buckner-Webb was elected to the Idaho Legislature, where she served in the State House of Representatives (2010-2012). She then CONTINUED >

59
succeeded LeFavour in the Idaho State Senate, where she’d serve four terms, ending her tenure in 2020 when she decided not to run for re-election. Reflecting on her accomplishments, Buckner-Webb said, “It would not be a piece of legislation. Nobody gets any legislation through without a majority, so I could never say, ‘This my hallmark piece.’ It would be having the support of many, and the encouragement to stand up for perspectives that were not necessarily common or appreciated. I feel I opened doors for and supported others.” Buckner-Webb was the first Black person elected to the Idaho Legislature. And while that wasn’t the main point of her political career, she wasn’t afraid to point it out. “I was giving testimony in support of an ‘Idaho’s Too Great For Hate’ license plate,” she said. “I had a great presentation and I got it to the floor. I stated, ‘I am Black, and I’m proud of Black!’ I assured that body that ‘Black’ is not a derogatory term. I’m proud of the wholeness of who I am. And yet people were calling me on the phone, as soon as I got off the floor, saying, ‘I don’t think of you as Black.’ And I said, ‘Work on that.’ “The desire to highlight that is for the young people that still walk through the door and fear, ‘Oh gosh, I’m going to be the other.’ It’s okay to be the other, you will often be the other, and yet you must be the wholeness of who you are.” Buckner-Webb said she’s been glad to be the catalyst for people standing up for change and for running for office. “The Legislature needs to be representative of all the people of Idaho and their voices should be heard. Not that those of mainstream dominant cultures don’t, or can’t, represent others to some degree.
“We are fighting constantly against labels and not understanding those labels represent real, live, breathing people who should have opportunities. We need to remember what’s behind the politics: the people impacted and what that impact will be.” 60
H OM E TOWN H E R O | L IFE + CULTURE
But clearly, representatives of a given population best articulate their goals, objectives, and experience. Their voices are invaluable to the decision-making process.” Buckner-Webb’s impact can be found not just in Boise’s cultural landscape, but in its physical one. If you visit Julia Davis Park, you’ll find St. Paul Baptist Church, founded and built by Buckner-Webb’s great-grandfather with assistance from her great-great-grandfather. The historic building is now home to the museum BucknerWebb helped found: the Idaho Black History Museum. Cherie Buckner-Webb Park (1100 W. Bannock Street) was dedicated in 2021. The name, unanimously approved by the Boise City Council, was chosen from more than 1,200 citizen submissions. “It’s so unique,” she said. “And I’m honored and humbled. Growing up here, who would have thought it? That it has meaning for others is important to me. And it was established while I yet live!” As for the future, Buckner-Webb sees more work to do. “When you look in the community and the world, there’s so many important things to devote our time to or get engaged with,” she said. “We are now, as a state,
where we have a level of education for most of the folks that make the rules, pass the laws, and enforce them, that we could be more humanity-centric, instead of operating as adversaries; ‘them’ versus ‘us.’ I’d like us to focus more on addressing the needs of all Idahoans. Shelter, food, clothing, and access to education: I still believe those are the rights of all people. I invite folks to step up and purposefully work on eliminating those barriers.”

THE JAMES CASTLE HOUSE MAY 18 - JULY 27 Emily Culver is an artist and educator originally from rural Pennsylvania. She creates multimedia objects that reference existing systems and tools to question their perceived purpose, and our relationship to them. 01 AFFORDANCES: Two tool-like objects create an intimate moment when hung in a bathroom stall. / 02 FLAILS: The smooth forms, materials and finishes of these works beckon to be touched. / 03 WHAT SHE SAW WHEN SHE WALKED IN: The surface shown here was made by the artist; each tile was individually enameled and arranged before assembly. / 04 TROUGH SHROUDED: This ten foot long table-like sculpture was created using Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling. / 05 PLUG: Copper sheet was formed and fabricated by hand to create this hollow object resembling a plug. / 06 LABOR OF SUGGESTION: An immersive installation that obscures situations where objects of desire are within view, but out of reach.
