As a Native,
I know the Treasure Valley. I know Idaho. “When it came time to sell the home we’ve loved since we built it a decade ago, we wanted someone who’d treated it as the home they loved & “wanted the best for”, too. From the minute I spoke with Ian Brown, I knew he was that professional. Ian’s communication style is clear & so responsive, we always felt in the know & like we were his number one priority. His community reputation is worth gold itself, as when we needed a few items “punched” to get our sale price, Ian arranged quality professionals to make our home ready. He’s also an impeccable planner, so we knew what steps we were on & what was coming next during the whole process, from readying our home for the market to signing our closing docs, again with local professionals. If you want no-stress, high-trust process for the sale or purchase of Treasure Valley real estate, Ian Brown is the best hands you could put yourselves in!” - Kerri M. Eagle, ID

Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals it’s beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmer’s markets are gearing up for a busy season of visitors to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers. There are a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. For our April issue, we wanted to share with you how some of our neighbors are getting out to explore both locally and globally. We would love to hear from you about your favorite hidden gems in town and your go-to travel destinations, so drop us line or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram. We hope that the destinations featured this month give you something to dream about visiting in the near future. Here is to a happy spring full of adventure and peace and sunshine.

Hiking in the Boise Foothills

K I D’S COR N E R | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON
What better way to spend quality time with your family and get in touch with nature than a fresh, invigorating walk in the Boise foothills, woods or along the river? Family hikes make for fun learning opportunities for kids and parents alike. So try some of these hiking activities with the whole family.
A STONE IS A STONE IS A…MINERAL? Go on an excursion to learn about rocks and minerals. Learn which rocks and minerals are abundant in the area, and have each family member choose several to scout for. Take along a descriptive rock and mineral guide, and a magnifying glass for viewing the colors, layers, and details.
SOUNDS OF NATURE Wander through a forest and listen carefully for a variety of bird and animal sounds. Before you go, visit your library for a DVD or audio CD of birds and wild animal calls. Then download an audio recorder on your phone and carry it on your hike to record some of the sounds you hear.
PHOTO ADVENTURE Capture nature’s splendor. Hiking trails provide plenty of photo opportunities, and kids will love snapping the shots. Discuss in advance what each family member wants to photograph, such as a huge tree, a butterfly, deer tracks, or a close-up of a nibbling squirrel. When you get home, print out the best photos, and create a nature scrapbook with them.
ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
TREE TALES These giants of nature are not only intriguing because of their size but also because of their many variations. Borrow some books on trees from your library that describe the unique features of trees and their history. Use clues such as the shape of the leaves, texture of bark, and size of the trunk to identify the kind of tree.
WHICH WAY DO WE GO? Roam the countryside and teach your children directional skills such as how to read a map and use a compass or the sun to determine direction. Before setting out, choose a trail system that

provides maps, or make up your own. Take a trail that branches off several times, allowing for plenty of skill-building opportunities. For even more fun, turn the excursion into a treasure hunt. Hide a small prize just off the trail under a bush or pile of leaves, mark the location on your map, and let the journey begin.
ANIMALS ALL AROUND Take a quiet hike in a wooded area with grassy clearings, and see how many animals you meet. Watch for snakes, turtles, and geese if there’s a nearby lake or stream. Also, look for chipmunks and squirrels playing chase or gathering food; birds of prey circling overhead; or grazing rabbits and deer. Discuss the animal’s unique characteristics and how those qualities help or hinder the animal. Talk about what the animals eat, their shelters, and species they are related to. Also, keep eyes peeled for animal tracks to identify and determine how recently they were made.

CREEPY CRAWLY THINGS
TREKKIN’ TIPS FOR TYKES
Scouting for insects is an all-time favorite among kids, and the variety of creepy-crawly creatures in the woods is remarkable. Carry an insect book and a magnifying glass for close examination of insects’ fascinating features. Bring a journal and track the types of insects you find. Read about insects’ defense behaviors and characteristics such as colors that indicate danger to predators.
When hiking with children, keep these suggestions in mind. Allow small legs plenty of time for breaks and making the journey, and know your child’s limitations. Be familiar with potential dangers in the area and teach your children trail and animal safety. Before you set out, inform your kids that there are rules against taking their nature finds home.
BEFORE YOU GO Plan your activities before you leave so you’ll arrive prepared. For your comfort and convenience, carry a small daypack, extra clothing for cold air along trails, and don’t forget hiking boots. For your protection, bring hats, sunglasses, sunblock, and insect repellant. Be prepared for emergencies by carrying a small flashlight and batteries, watch, map, bandages, and plenty of water and snacks. Make the most of your nature quest by carrying binoculars and a magnifying glass.
WHERE TO HIKE Stack Rock Trail in Boise National Forest is a popular hike for the entire family. The 10-mile loop trailhead is accessible via a 13-mile drive on Bogus Basin Road. The Elephant Rock Trail within Military Reserve is a half-mile trail featuring very minimal elevation gain perfect and practical for hikes with young children and strollers. Hulls Gulch Nature Trail is a local favorite described as “peaceful and beautiful” with a lot of crickets and lizards to observe.

Have Wheels, Will Travel NEW SPOTS AND TIPS TO MAKE YOUR NEXT TREASURE VALLEY BIKE RIDE AN ADVENTURE
ARTICLE BY JORDAN GRAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAMI REED
Bill Reed, co-owner of Reed Cycle in Eagle and Boise, knows a thing or two or about bikes. His shop just celebrated 22 years in business. “You can start at a very young age and ride up into your 90s,” he said. “You get exercise, you’re able to enjoy the outdoors, and you’re able to move along at a little bit of a quicker pace than walking. I like to see things a little more quickly.” According to Reed, what kind of bike you should get depends largely on where you want to ride. “If (you’re) going to ride on single-track trails, on dirt roads, or on pavement like the Greenbelt, then we would say just a bike model according to that,” Reed said. “Most adults will get a multispeed bike. It just gives you more options. You can adjust your speed to the terrain by shifting gears. With a single speed, you’re pretty limited to flat ground.”

“Riding a bicycle just gives you freedom. There’s a lot of different ways you can ride a bike and styles of bikes you can ride. There’s all kinds of other things that go with it, but freedom is the biggest one.” — BILL REED
For kids starting their cycling journey, Reed recommended, “a single-speed bike with a coaster brake if they’re under 5-6 years old.” After that, they’d move into a multi-speed bike as well. And for expert riders looking for a challenge, Reed said the most popular option is a full-suspension mountain bike. To make your trip more comfortable, Reed suggested investing in padded shorts, an updated helmet, riding gloves, and knee protection. He also offered some basic riding rules: 1. If you’re coming up on somebody and you’re going to pass them, always let them know verbally and with your bike bell, if you have one. 2. When on the Greenbelt or a trail system, you’ve got a total mix of people. Mind your speed and try not to go too fast for the situation. 3. When you’re in the Foothills or riding on trails, a downhill rider should stop to let an uphill rider through when you come to an

area where it’s too narrow for both of you. The uphill rider always has the right of way. If you’re looking for a new spot to ride, Reed said one of his favorite spots is the Ada/Eagle Bike Park. Several Foothills trails also made his list of top spots, such as the Highland and Corrals trails. A little further afield, he said the Hidden Springs area (with the Redtail, Lookout Loop, and Current Creek trails) were often less crowded than options like Camel’s Back, though all offered their own challenges. “Bogus Basin is also a great area,” he said. “You’ve got a good five-to-six-month season up there, depending on the winter.” Reed did caution that if you’re headed out to the trails, prepare for goatheads and thorns by having some puncture protection for your tires. As for why you should give biking a try? “I think some of it just the camaraderie and fellowship with friends,” Reed said. “And being able to do something on the same, level field.”

Hiking Bogus Basin
BOGUS BASIN’S SUCCESSFUL PLAN FOR YEAR-ROUND ACTIVITIES ARTICLE BY PERRY BARNES PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Bogus Basin has been a source of countless memories for generations of families. Only 16 miles above downtown Boise, the non-profit recreation area is visible throughout the valley. Whether you’re commuting to work, picking up kids from school, or heading up to ski or hike with your family, you probably see the iconic radio towers at Deer Point summit every day. The story of Bogus Basin starts in the late 1930s with the collaborative efforts of city and state officials, and Boise Ski Club and Junior Chamber members as they created a destination to enrich lives and boost the local economy. Early film footage of those enthusiastic volunteers clearing trees and brush, proves the perseverance and commitment that fueled this collective dream. Seventy-nine years later, that dream is still thriving. While the population of the Treasure Valley has grown significantly (from 25,000 to over 760,000 since opening in 1942) the mission remains unchanged. Guided by a volunteer Board of Directors, the non-profit oversees daily operations managed by 65 full-time staff, 500 winter seasonal employees, and 100 summer seasonal employees. Providing affordable, accessible and fun year-round mountain recreation and education remains at the core of the organization. In 2016 Bogus Basin adopted a ten-year master plan to assure the area’s long-term viability to transition from a one-season business model into a year-round destination. Following several strong winter seasons, and support from the community, the year-round master plan was implemented in just five years. Summer development included The Glade Runner Mountain Coaster, expanded hiking and biking trails, community events, and The Basin Gravity Park, a lift-accessed downhill mountain bike park.

27
The plan also focused on improving winter operations and facilities. The mountain experience was enhanced with upgraded access for beginning skiers, adding a high-speed quad lift; expanding expert terrain with three new Snowcats, and improving amenities throughout the property. Doubling the portable fan guns to 50, as well as the water pumping capacity, now allows twice as much snow to be made, providing more top to bottom coverage. Introducing this extensive snowmaking system has assured a dependable winter opening date. Both the Simplot and Pioneer Lodges have received updates, including new furniture and improved ventilation, and the main parking lot has added more than 200 additional spaces. The US Forest Service’s ‘Forest Health Initiative’ was developed to remove dead and diseased trees in order to promote a healthier forest. Bogus Basin remains committed to investing in its future. In summer 2021, a new master plan was adopted, preparing the non-profit for future expansion opportunities for recreation and education. New runs, lifts and facilities for the winter, and new trails, programs and events for the summer, combined with expanding free concerts, overnight youth science courses, and group events will connect everyone with healthy, fun outdoor opportunities. Nearly 500,000 guests visit the area annually, and Bogus Basin’s close proximity to the metro area makes it a top destination for locals. Environmental education programs, an acclaimed Ski & Snowboard School, winter and summer community race series, and school-based programs are popular draws. Whether taking in a deep breath of mountain air, an awe-inspiring view, or working with classmates to build a fort in the forest – there are countless reasons Bogus Basin is a place to visit and explore all year long.

In Idaho, it’s not hard to discover the truth behind the saying, “It’s about the journey, not the destination.” Idaho State Highway 21 is called the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway because it’s the perfect showcase of Idaho’s diverse natural landscapes, and a great place to begin your spring (or summer) adventure. This winding road is far less crowded than Maui’s famous Road to Hana and has enough stops along the way for a day or weekend trip that doesn’t require stepping on a plane. This scenic journey begins in Southeast Boise where the historic wagon tracks of the Oregon Trail make for an easy hike before driving over the Boise River. Lucky Peak State Park comes into view shortly after, complete with a sandy beach and the dam’s reminder to “Keep the Forests Green.” A rising sense of awe takes hold as you leave the foothills and head toward the mountains. are several historical points along this drive, including Robie Creek, a gorgeous green plateau that sits above Moores Creek. After the spring rains, it feels akin to the green hills of Ireland! For the next 20 miles, the evergreen trees hug the curves of the highway leading into Idaho City. This tiny historic town was once the largest city in the northwest in 1864, and its wild tale is told in the Boise Basin Museum, which is on the National Register of Historic Buildings in America. After seeing photos and artifacts of its heyday, take in some fresh air on Charcoal Gulch, a 5-mile moderate hiking trail where beautiful moss-covered pine trees loft overhead and spring flowers blossom at your feet. Uncrowded and plentifully shaded, this trail makes for a peaceful forest walk. For a family-friendly option, opt for the Buena Vista trail which loops the bottom layer of forest around an old airstrip and creek.

There are an abundance of hiking trails, campgrounds, and natural hot springs within and beyond Idaho City. Drive north another hour and visit Kirkham Hot Springs nestled along the banks of the Payette River, then continue 50 more miles to Stanley, the perfect spring destination less than three hours from Boise. The magical mountain town of Stanley, with its unique and captivating views of the Sawtooth Mountains, will leave you breathless. Soak up the sun with a picnic on the beach at Redfish Lake or spend the afternoon kayaking, horseback riding, or hiking the picturesque trails. Stanley is home to the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, a 1400-square mile stretch of natural darkness, and the only one of its kind in the United States. Watch the Milky Way rise over the mountains before heading to one of the cozy mountain lodges for a nightcap and soft bed.

ASPEN “ Roaring Fork Valley
“After traveling all over the country to multiple Airbnbs, Kendall was one of the best hosts we had ever encountered. Her knowledge of the Aspen area and responsiveness to my questions while at the home really made our stay that much better. Additionally, the property itself was immaculate. From the views, to the amenities and accommodations, we could not have had a better stay. We will definitely be coming back when we revisit the area. I would recommend this home to anyone looking to make great memories to last a lifetime.”

Our vision for a thriving hospitality market in the greater Boise area requires inspiration and tenacity, and continued gratitude for our hospitality community.
Boise has always been a great place to get out and enjoy the views. Whether it’s the views of the North End and Downtown from the top of Camel’s Back Park, or the sweeping vistas visible from Bogus Basin, we have lots of ways to get some healthy perspective. That mindset is invaluable for those of us in the travel and hospitality business. At the Boise Convention and Visitors Bureau, our job is to bring visitors, meetings, and events to town. The COVID19 pandemic has taught us to be smart, flexible, and let optimism guide our way. We’ve been creative with events from wine tastings to media trips, and we’ve been able to safely meet in person. We continue to appeal to visitors coming from places just a short drive away, as well as devoting more resources toward cities that have nonstop flights to Boise. Boise is fortunate to have our partners at the Boise Airport, where they’ve been working hard to welcome new nonstop flight routes to Atlanta on Delta Airlines. New nonstop flights were also added to Palm Springs, Orange County, New York, Chicago, Austin, Nashville, and Everett, WA.

We are also bolstered in our meetings and events by the ongoing support of our marketing partners, the Boise Centre and community stakeholders. In the midst of all the changes their support allows us to continue promoting Boise as a destination for visitors. Our vision for a thriving hospitality market in the greater Boise area requires inspiration and tenacity, and continued gratitude for our hospitality community. Our pledge to host the 5th Annual Recognition of Service Excellence (ROSE) Awards celebration in 2021 was a great success. We are thrilled that this year’s celebration will be held in person at the Boise Centre on April 18th. I’m looking forward to showing our colleagues in the hospitality business just how much they mean to us. Over the last few years, we’ve welcomed many new visitors. Our goal as we grow and bring back more in-person meetings and events will be to retain the visitors we’ve met and encourage a return to the greater Boise region. Boise’s beautiful views, cultural attractions, diverse culinary choices, craft breweries, wineries and cideries, and friendly locals, inspire people to make the trip. Boise.org

OUTDOOR SPACE I N S P I R AT I O N ARTICLE BY KAY BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANZ WITTE
For an outdoor experience closer to home, the answer is a stylish and comfortable patio for the whole family
Renovating your homes’ outdoor spaces not only enhances aesthetics but can also provide a host of recreational benefits. Gathering inspiration from existing projects done by professional landscapers can help identify reputable contractors to take on the project. These backyard ideas will help you achieve the outdoor space you’ve always wanted – beautiful, versatile, and easy maintenance. Whether your focus is mainly gorgeous flowers and trees, or if you want a more minimalist backyard that caters to your entertaining needs, putting in the time and effort to properly plan your outdoor space always pays off.
RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPE DESIGN UNDER $100,000 North End Mid Century Mid-Century Modern Architecture renovations are all the rave these days. The clients dreamt of refreshing their front and back yard with clean lines, asymmetry, and simplicity to reflect the stunning architecture of their home. Franz Witte helped make their dream come true with custom landscape plantings, and sod installation. “We learned to look at how the interior and exterior of the home connect to each other to make sure the features and floor plan flow well together. By taking this approach, we were able to achieve a final product that was functional and attractive for our clients.” Said Jake Koppes, Designer & Project Manager.
RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPE DESIGN $100,000 - $250,000 Hill Road Pool Getaway Creating a space for family time in the backyard was this client’s goal for their project. A fully custom outdoor

kitchen, wet bar, paver patio, retaining wall, and landscape plantings expanded the living space outdoors. “The space turned out great, cozy but plentiful. The family now enjoys their time hosting backyard gatherings and BBQs, and we are so grateful that we got to be part of it,” remarked Seneca Hull, President of Franz Witte.
RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPE DESIGN OVER $250,000 Grandkid’s Playground Ever dream of redoing your entire backyard? This project is a perfect example. What started off as a basic backyard turned into a dream oasis. The client wanted to have the best backyard for his family (especially the grandkids) to enjoy for years to come. This project came complete with a custom ballerina fountain, complete irrigation renovation, landscape planting, sod installation, paver patio, retaining walls, privacy screening, custom kitchen, heating elements, outdoor TV’s, hot tub area, private vegetable garden, and sports court. Franz Witte emphasizes, “A sound piece of advice for anyone looking to redo their back yard is to consult an industry expert and come up with a plan. With collaborative efforts, we were able to help the client construct their perfect backyard oasis from start to finish. We’re pretty pleased with the outcome and know they were too.” Franz Witte Landscape Contracting has been a leader in the industry for over fifty years employing crews of horticulture, maintenance, and construction experts. LUXURY REAL ESTATE BRAND ENTERS BOISE MARKET Engel & Völkers has entered the Boise market under the leadership of license partners Kristen Sweet and Charles Sweet. “Our expansion into Boise is a strategic response to consumer trends and migration patterns,” said Anthony Hitt, president and CEO, Engel & Völkers Americas. “From 2010-2020, Idaho was ranked the second fastest growing state in the nation, and the median price of a home in the Treasure Valley specifically has increased 31% over the past year. Real estate here is both an attractive and stable investment for our clients, and the time was right to establish our presence here.” Engel & Völkers Boise will be located in the heart of downtown Boise, known for its specialty shops, small boutiques, dining and nightlife, on the corner of 8th and Broad. The region is consistently growing, as people are drawn to the area for its bounty of natural amenities, including the Boise River and world class skiing only a short distance away in Sun Valley and Bogus Basin. Idaho also has one of the lowest populations per capita, low crime rates and excellent education systems. A strong economy and more than 400 global employers in the state also attract many international buyers, especially from France, Canada and Germany.

Hidden Lake & Lost Lake Trail

Located near the famed Lake Cascade State Park, the Hidden Lake and Lost Lake Trail can be steep at times but is well worth the incredible views. About 3.5 miles out and back, it is the perfect secluded hike to watch wildflowers bloom and birds take to the skies. There are many other trails at the state park as well, so pack the picnic basket for an afternoon road trip.

A simply stunning 2.1-mile loop trail just up Bogus Basin Road. There is an option for a one-mile extension off the trail—this is highly recommended! Watch for wildlife and downed trees. Often surpassed by the more common Stack Rock Trail, Mores Mountain Loop boasts beautiful sights and fresh mountain air.
Spring is the best time of year to visit Bruneau Dunes State Park and the loop trails around the dunes. With the tallest single-structure sand dune in North America (towering at 470 feet), do you dare to ascend to the top? The loop trails are suited for all activity levels, although a fair warning, walking in sand can be laborious and going straight up the dunes can be a challenge.

BOX CANYON SPRINGS PRESERVE Less than two hours from Boise lies the breathtaking views of Box Canyon Springs Nature Preserve. With sparkling blue, crystal clear water, it is a must-see spot on your day-trip hiking adventures. Hike directly down into the canyon to get a close-up of the glacial water and stunning 20-foot waterfall. The area can be notoriously windy, so be prepared. Nestled within Ponderosa State Park’s many trails, the Peninsula Trail is a 4 mile out and back trek that leads to the spectacular views of Osprey Point. Open in the winter for Nordic recreation, it is also a perfect springtime day hike. A peaceful and gentle climb winds alongside Payette Lake with beautiful views.

ADE L MA N N MIN E With so many trails around Boise proper, it’s easy to overlook a few, but the Adelmann Mine Trail is one you shouldn’t miss. At 4.7 miles with a 1,300-foot elevation gain, this trail will get the heart pumping, but perhaps the best part is the historic gold mine located off the trail.
