NEW AMENITIES OPEN AT GOLDA HARRIS NATURE PRESERVE Boise has another place for folks to relax, unwind, and experience nature at the newly completed Golda Harris Nature Preserve. City of Boise leaders and project partners gathered October 28 to dedicate the riverside nature preserve and unveil new amenities. Land for the three-acre preserve was donated by the Harris family and deeded to the city in 2016. Construction began in the summer of 2020 to add a bridge into the preserve, replace a section of Greenbelt in the area, and establish a new interior concrete path that leads to a beautiful overlook. Natural pathways allow for additional exploration

i n g re d ient s + 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cubed + 1/2 cup fresh sage, thinly sliced + 1/4 cup granulated sugar + 1/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed + 1 large egg + 1/2 cup sweet potato or pumpkin puree + 1 cup Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Flour (Blue Package) + 1/2 teaspoon baking soda + 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon + 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger + 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves + 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg + 1/2 teaspoon sea salt + Confectioner’s Sugar for dusting
i n st r uc t ion s In a light colored saucepan (this helps you see the butter as the color changes), melt your cubed butter over medium heat & add your sage. Swirl the pan so the butter cooks evenly and doesn’t burn. The butter will begin to foam after about 30 seconds, keep stirring constantly as it begins to brown. Keep an eye on the color of the butter as you are looking for a golden brown hue. Once you see that, remove from heat, strain out the sage and pour butter into a heat proof container. Set this aside until it cools and becomes solidified again. You can put in the refrigerator to speed up the process. You will use the sage butter at room temperature. Prepare the dough: In a bowl, combine the Gluten-Free Flour, Baking Soda, Cinnamon, Ginger, Cloves and Salt. Gently whisk together. In the bowl of a stand mixer or with a hand mixer, cream the sage butter with the sugars until light and fluffy. Add the egg and sweet potato or pumpkin puree and beat until combined. Add the dry ingredients and slowly mix until combined. Form 1 Tablespoon-sized balls and place 2” apart on your parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for about 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from oven and cool on wire racks. Lightly dust cookies with confectioner’s sugar. Store in an airtight container. To order digestible sourdough bakery items, visit Meredith Hodge

5 MOST POPULAR TYPES OF MASSAGE SWEDISH MASSAGE
This type of massage combines kneading, deep
circular motions, and long flowing strokes in the direction of the heart. This type of massage is also good for people who are new to massage. Choose a Swedish massage for relaxation or managing minor pain. HOT STONE MASSAGE
This type of therapeutic massage is similar to
a Swedish massage, only the massage therapist uses heated stones in lieu of or in addition to their hands. A hot stone massage is best for people who have muscle pain and tension, or who simply want to relax. DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage
that uses more pressure than a Swedish massage. It’s a great option if you have soreness, chronic muscle problems, injury, or imbalance. It can help relieve tight muscles, chronic muscle pain, and anxiety. AROMATHERAPY MASSAGE
Aromatherapy massages combine soft,
gentle pressure with the use of essential oils. Aromatherapy massages are the perfect option for those who want to have an emotional healing component to their massage. TRIGGER POINT MASSAGE
Trigger point massage uses broad, flowing
strokes that are gentle and relaxing combined with stronger, deeper pressure areas of tightness in the muscle tissues, known as trigger points.
If you are stressed and anxious, you have the tendency to acquire tight muscles that can lead to muscle soreness. Your breathing is affected, too. A massage can help remove the muscle tightening. It can also reinvigorate your outlook as massage relaxes your mind. Massage therapy is a treatment approach that is growing in demand and popularity. At one time, massage therapy was considered an alternative or fringe approach. However, it is now becoming much more accepted as a mainstream treatment option with many health benefits. While a massage can be a luxury for many, it can also relieve many health ailments. People are becoming increasingly aware of the power of massage, and reaping the medicinal benefits they have to offer. Unlike medications, massages have no long or short-term side-effects. Not only does it feel good, but it can also improve your health and quality of life. Reach out to your favorite Salon & Day Spa to schedule your treatment. CityLifestyle.com/Boise

your child is. Both viruses have similar symptoms. To make visits safe, some offices have separated “sick” and “well” areas of their clinic or are having newborns come in early in the day before other patients. Phone ahead, so your pediatrician can advise you on the best way to come in. Dr. Katie Copeland, a family medicine provider at Saltzer Health, recently shared some helpful advice for parents. When asked how parents help their middle school and high schoolers stay safe during the pandemic, she said, “Talk about their role in the community and their family and their importance in the spread of this disease,” Dr. Copeland said. “With a pandemic and infectious virus such as this, we are only as strong as our weakest link. The average person can spread the disease to five people. The longer people disregard the recommendations, the longer this will not be in good control and it will cause the stay-at-home order to be extended.” CityLifestyle.com/Boise

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED) body did that! We all go through ups and downs in body confidence. Something that really helps me is positive affirmations. Every morning in a notebook write down three positive affirmations. This helps frame your mindset for the day and in general provides a positive outlook. We all start somewhere and our body is capable of so much more than we give it credit for. We just have to start. + HOW CAN I INCORPORATE WEIGHT TRAINING WITH DAY TO DAY EXERCISE SUCH AS BIKING OR WALKING? Variety is what keeps things interesting. I am a huge advocate for getting at least 8,000 steps every day. This is the total of your normal activity and any dedicated walking or running you do in addition. When incorporating weight training with your walking, running, or biking your goals will determine the best plan of action. Do you want to get stronger or do you want to improve your cardiovascular endurance? You will want to prioritize your goal. You can train both at the same time in moderate amounts without one significantly interfering with the other, but this will start to break down at higher intensities.

Holistic Nutrition & Integrative Health FINDING NEW WAYS TO LIVE A MORE FULFILLED AND PASSIONATE LIFE
ARTICLE MCKENZIE JOYNER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MCKENZIE JOYNER
TRUE HEALTH ISN’T COMPRISED OF JUST THE FOODS WE EAT, BUT ALSO IN THE WAY WE MOVE OUR BODY, THE THOUGHTS WE THINK AND THE INFORMATION WE CONSUME ON A DAILY BASIS. I am convinced that these pieces come together and shape our overall health and well-being. FOOD - It is important to be intentional about the foods we are choosing to eat and when we eat them. I am convinced that eating seasonally and sourcing locally is essential. Eating seasonally allows your body to intuitively crave the foods needed to keep you healthy and nourished throughout the year. To make sourcing locally easier, I recommend building a relationship with your local farmers, bakers, and small businesses that support local vendors. This helps you know where your food comes from, who grew it, how they farmed it, and keeps your dollar within the community. NUTRITION - Eating shouldn’t be about logging your calories, tracking points, or checking things off from an outdated food pyramid. You should be enjoying every bite of nutrient-dense, delicious food at the end of your fork. Cooking and eating a meal should be an experience filled with love and enjoyment, not something to stress about nor rush through. I strongly suggest eating the rainbow, including a variety of textures as well as flavors at every meal. Placing different colors on your plate ensures a wide array of nutrients being ingested. I also recommend one fermented food with each meal as they keep your gut microbiome healthy. This could be pickles, kimchi, kombucha, sauerkraut, etc. 40

MOVEMENT - Movement is medicine. You can change your mood simply by moving your body. Exercise increases your heart rate, breath frequency, and releases endorphins. The movement doesn’t have to be extreme nor lengthy; it can be stretching, going for a walk, moving through yoga poses, or running in the foothills. There are wonderful ways to move your body, and I make it a point to do so on a daily basis. If you do the same, you will be amazed at how good you feel both physically and mentally. MINDFULNESS - Our minds are powerful. The thoughts and feelings we have every day create our environment in which we live and experience the world. My advice is to take time each day to sit in silence; you could meditate or just listen to your breath. This daily practice creates a space free from thought, outside noise, influence, or distraction. This simple act of being with yourself in silence will alter your reality, mindset, and ability to take on life. Make space for this sacred time for yourself. ROUTINE - It is the habits that we make that create our lives, health, and total wellness. It is the small actions that we do daily that build our base and set us up to live a life we love; a life that fills us up and creates space for more goodness to come our way.
