but it sure feels more intense to me. While the best weather is on its way, and it has been a while since I have gone “back to school,” I still get that doomsday feeling I had in my youth when I enjoyed summer vacation and saw it drawing to a close at the end of August. Summer is not over yet! Let’s get out and explore this great state while we can. In our Water & Woods feature, Roger shows us how to go "glamping" in Idaho. There is nothing like getting away for a last-minute trip with the family, and Roger teaches us how to do it in style. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets!

KLING BLUE WATERS WHILE A GENTLE BREEZE WAFTS ACROSS YOU ON A LONG SUMMER DAY. Some might ask, but you probably won’t. You will be basking in the moment like a wet Labrador retriever under a shady tree on an August afternoon. The point of camping is getting away from home and relaxing, and the hassles of packing, unloading, setting up and taking down can be a little taxing and stressful, so why not splurge on a little luxury while still enjoying Idaho’s great outdoors? Idaho Parks and Recreation gives you that option with its yurts and cabins. They’re cozy, no-hassle ways to camp in comfort. If you’re unfamiliar with yurts, they’re basically a big, round tent. You show up with your sleeping bags and food, maybe a cookstove depending on the yurt, and you’re ready to camp. Idaho Parks and Recreation offers two styles of yurts for camping: park yurts and backcountry yurts. Park yurts are located within Idaho state parks, and each is about 20 feet in diameter with a plywood floor, canvas and hardwood sidewalls and a skylight. With lockable wood doors, windows with screens and storm flaps, the yurts are weatherproof, peaceful and secure. Prices start around $60 per night, not including reservation fees. Because park yurts and cabins are in state

hiking, biking, boating or a myriad of other activities, and they’re nestled in some of Idaho’s most iconic and scenic places. Backcountry yurts are located in the Idaho City area on national forest land. They are secluded and more off the beaten path. These yurts are located to be base camps for backcountry snow sports, but they’re also good for summer camping. Some require you to hike a short way to get to them, which means you will be carrying your gear and food with you, but wheelbarrows are available at the yurts for convenience.

A cabin means you don’t have to set up a tent, tow an RV or worry about the weather.

Twelve state parks offer cabins for rent ranging from simple to extravagant. Basic cabins are small, one-room structures with bunks, a small table and covered decks. They have power, heat and air conditioning, but no kitchens or bathrooms (they’re located nearby). They sleep up to five people, depending on the cabin. Prices start around $50 per night, not including reservation fees. If you want to go full luxury, some offer cabins that are basically fully furnished vacation rentals. Whatever you choose, remember these are popular rentals, so you might have a hard time reserving one for a summer weekend, but you can probably find one midweek. Late-season camping in a yurt is warm and cozy thanks to a wood stove. Some park cabins like this one of Henry’s Lake give you a waterfront access.

When selecting a yurt or cabin, spend some time on Idaho Parks and Recreation’s website at ParksAndRecreation.Idaho.gov to find out exact details of the yurts/cabins. Some parks allow pets in yurts, but check before you reserve. Reservations for backcountry yurts can be made online or by calling 1.888.922.6743 up to nine months in advance of your stay and no later than 48 hours prior to your intended arrival. For reservations less than 48 hours prior to arrival, call 208.514.2418. The demand tends to lighten up in September and even more in October, which is still a great month for camping. Don’t hesitate to go even further into fall, because the so-called offseason is still a nice time to visit cabins and yurts. You’re totally protected from the weather, so if a fall storm rolls through, go inside and curl up by the wood stove or heater with a good book and relax. After all, you’re camping.

I WOULDN’T SAY THAT THERE WAS A SINGULAR MOMENT WHEN I SUDDENLY REALIZED THAT I WAS AN ARTIST. I’ve had a few moments where I noticed my perspective changed dramatically because of art. Nowadays, I just naturally paint without consciously thinking about whether colors work together or clash. When painting with oils, I sometimes apply unmixed colors directly to the canvas before they are dulled down. I’ve also realized that our imaginations aren’t reliable when it comes to art. When we think we are imagining a neat looking car or even one of our own relatives, we are just imaging a blob of information that is incomplete or pieced together incorrectly. We’re not thinking about the curvatures of the back or the way the eyes sit in the socket. It’s hard to remember and piece this information altogether at once in one visual representation. This is why I sketch often, so I can memorize these forms. Drawing and art is about memorizing shapes, forms and colors— and how they fit together. I didn’t realize this until I really got into color theory and daily sketching.

AFTER LEARNING COLOR THEORY, I SAW THE WORLD DIFFERENTLY. IT WAS AN AH-HA MOMENT. I STARTED SEEING COLOR HARMONY EVERYWHERE I WENT. I STARTED CONSCIOUSLY INCORPORATING WHAT I LEARNED IN MY ART. August 2019 | Boise Lifestyle

CREATING SPACES AT HOME WHERE YOUR KIDS WILL WANT TO SPEND TIME AND BRING THEIR FRIENDS IS A KEY FACTOR IN THE DESIGN PROCESS FOR JADE ENZLER DESIGNER FOR MADDYN HOMES. “It doesn’t matter the square footage of the home; kids don’t need big spaces—just spaces that are meaningful and purposeful,” explains Jade. The homework space in this award-winning parade home is a great example. With it located next to the family space, mom can keep an eye on things. TIPS 1. Smaller spaces are less overwhelming, stay organized and are easier to clean. For example, a twin bed is easiest to make.

2. Define play spaces with rugs. Toys stay on the rug and are cleared up before beginning another activity.

3. Personalize the space to your child’s tastes and interests. A space they love is more likely to stay neat and clean.

4. Use positive messages in your decor to uplift and elevate your kids. Pillows and art are great places for an encouraging word.

5. Bean bag storage chairs are a clever way to store soft toys and blankets. (Available on Amazon.com for $18-$30)

Another little girl was nice enough to share her kite with me. While exploring the city was fun, my favorite part of Puerto Rico was playing in the ocean and on the beach. This was my first time swimming in the ocean. The water was really warm, and the beaches had sand that was perfect for playing. My favorite beaches were Flamenco Beach on Culebra Island and Luquillo Beach.

I learned new experiences are exciting. I made a pot out of clay on a pottery wheel at a small city market. Trying new food is fun! I went on a food tour in Old San Juan and got to taste a bunch of new Puerto Rican foods. I learned what an iguana was. They were all over the town of Old San Juan. I was always on the lookout for hidden iguanas. While visiting Culebra Island, I learned about coconut trees. My uncle climbed a coconut tree and got me my very own coconut to eat. I also learned that traveling with my aunt and uncle is really fun. They would chase us on the beach and make things from palm leaves.

From Stanley , Idaho One of our camping trips took us to Stanley, Idaho. This was my family’s first trip to Stanley. The mountains there are really cool, and I had a great time playing outside. My cousins came with us, and we rode bikes and four wheelers together. We went camping just outside town, but there are hotels and cabins if you don’t want to camp. My favorite place to play was Redfish Lake. There were lots of butterflies on the beach that I chased and cool rocks to collect. The best beach is by the Redfish Lake Lodge. There are places to buy food there along with watercraft rentals. If it is too crowded for you there, check out the North Shore Picnic Area. Rowen and Raven had some help from blogger Candice Steele. To follow more of their travel adventures, follow them on Instagram, @CSGinger, or visit her website, CSGinger.com.

I got to cook my own s’more over the campfire. It took a while to learn to not burn the marshmallow, but it was still yummy. I got to spend all afternoon playing on the beach at Redfish Lake. I brought my sand toys and got to make lots of sand castles and swim. Seeing animals is one of the best parts of going on vacation. We stopped at the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery, and I got to see all sorts of baby fish swimming. I went to a rustic hot spring for the first time and loved the warm water and playing with the rocks in the bottom of the river. Going on vacation means getting to spend more time with my family. I especially love that I get to spend more time with my dad since he isn’t at work.

Jennifer Zielinski +PASSIONATE +DEDICATED +ADVOCATE

+EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR IDAHO ANTI-TRAFFICKING COALITION

WHAT STARTED YOUR CAREER PATH? One of our four kids was adopted from the foster care system 11 years ago. She had significant needs that forced our family to navigate a flawed mental and behavioral health system that kept us in a cycle of crisis. Due to significant needs and family crisis, we placed her in a residential care facility three years ago to stabilize our family and to keep her safe. Within months, she was sexually exploited and abused by facility caregivers, throwing her back into a flawed system. Our experiences with trauma, mental health, high risks, lack of trust, ongoing judgement and false accusations lead me to seek work in nonprofit helping families like ours. Working within a variety of systems, supporting families and partnering with professionals for seven years gave me great insight to identifying the gaps, barriers and needed improvements for families and their children to be successful. Now, as the executive director of the Idaho Anti-Trafficking Coalition, I have an open platform to work on developing a systemic, statewide program alongside amazing staff, community partners and volunteers to develop and implement a system of care for anyone at risk, suspected or identified as a victim of sex trafficking.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? True partnerships! It’s important to learn from other programs by avoiding the same mistakes and implementing their successes.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Be authentic! Don’t be afraid of transparency and accountability. Don’t be afraid to push the envelope. Trust your instincts but honor questions, feedback, and opinions. Interview others who have failed and succeeded. Seek peer reviews and surround yourself with those who believe in what you’re doing. Believe in equality and give the voiceless a voice. And always, always stay humble.
