IDAHO WILD RIVERS ANNOUNCES GRANT PROGRAM RECIPIENTS The Idaho Wild Rivers Grant

NEW CITY OF BOISE ATTORNEY APPOINTED Jayme Sullivan has been appointed to lead the City of Boise’s Legal Department. As City Attorney, Jayme is the mayor and city council’s primary legal adviser and part of the city’s executive management team. Her first day on the job was April 1. The former Canyon County magistrate judge now oversees a department budget of $6.3 million and a team of more than 50 attorneys. These attorneys specialize in contract law, criminal law, real estate transactions, land use planning, aviation, employment law, risk

These are words a parent never wants to hear. It is difficult to imagine the impact such news would have on your life. The tumor would become the center of your universe, all life orbiting around it. The fears, tears, endless questions and doctor appointments; the medical bills beyond anything you know how to pay, even with the best of insurance. The sleepless nights, cafeteria dinners and constantly not knowing what will happen. In 2014, this nightmare became reality for one Treasure Valley family. Jack B. was 7 when his mom, Tiffany, got his results. Jack had experienced loss of vision due to a large brain tumor. He immediately began chemotherapy. but Jack’s tumor remained. In 2016, when he was nearing his final treatment, Jack’s parents asked his doctor what they should do next. His recommendation for a surgery which he’d previously advised against due to risks involved filled Tiffany with anxiety. The doctor also said that after the surgery, Jack would need proton radiation. The nearest center that provides this type of treatment is located in Oklahoma. Jack’s insurance would not cover the radiation. In addition, there would be the expenses of travel, housing and food. Without knowing how to pay for any of these things, the family began to make plans for the two of them to go to Oklahoma. “When you’re a parent, you find a way,” Tiffany says. Anxious about whether or not Jack should go through the risky brain surgery, Tiffany reached out to a support group on Facebook where someone suggested Tiffany apply to St. Jude. Two weeks after being accepted to St. Jude, Jack was already there for testing. The doctors at St. Jude performed the operation, during which Jack had a minor stroke. He was given two weeks to recover before beginning proton radiation. For Tiffany and Jack, being at St. Jude made such

a difference. The campus has everything all in one place. The doctors suspected Jack would have a seizure during his radiation treatment one day, and they were able to get him in for testing the same day on-site. “It’s very reassuring when you’re going through all this to have everything right there,” Tiffany says. She describes Tri Delta House, the housing at St. Jude, as feeling like home. “The whole staff treats you like you’re family.” Jack developed special relationships with many people, including his radiation oncologist, his nurse and his surgeon. Upon learning that Jack was interested in animals, one staff

Women’s Health: TIPS FROM A PRO

WHEN IT COMES TO WOMEN’S HEALTH AND WELLNESS, CERTAIN ISSUES OFTEN COME TO THE FOREFRONT. Cari Powers, owner of Kaia FIT gym in Boise, shares issues women face when it comes to a healthy lifestyle and offers tips to help. Women are concerned about weight. Cari recommends toning/ weight training. The reason for this is the more muscle you build, the denser the tissue becomes which makes you look smaller. Muscle tissue then burns more calories than fat at rest. Simply doing regular toning exercise helps your body lose weight while you are watching TV. It can be intimidating for women to go to a gym and lift weights, so women-only gyms are a good option. They can be a safer space for women starting out. Another issue women face is a lack of energy. Often they care for others, neglecting themselves. Women are tired, overworked and spread too thin. The last thing they want to do is to work out. Cari says adding exercise may make you tired for the first few days, but your body will rise to meet the demands you put on it, and soon exercising will energize you. Releasing endorphins also makes you feel more energetic. Exercising regularly not only gives you more energy but is also a keystone habit that can have numerous energizing trickledown effects. If you commit to getting up early to work out, you may feel more inclined to go to bed earlier and get extra sleep. After working out, you may feel inspired to make better food choices. The third issue Cari highlighted is nutrition. More than 80 percent of positive results are because of healthy eating. Women often feel like they have constraints on what they can manage. Whether it’s picky eaters they’re cooking for, running around like crazy chauffers or working full-time, women have a lot on their plates. Cari suggests figuring out what changes you can do consistently by asking, “What can I stick with over time?” She says to make small sustainable changes, finding ways to sacrifice where it’s less impactful.

WEIGHT LOSS/TONING Cari recommends taking a class that gives a full-body workout. It is much more motivating to work out with other people, and the accountability and encouragement you get when you go are helpful. It is important to tone everything in order to maintain a balanced body. When your body is out of balance, it can lead to a lot of problems. If you are starting out on your own at home, try resistance bands or cans of food if you don’t have weights. Pushups and squats also work.

FEELING TIRED/LACK OF ENERGY Cari says committing time daily to care for yourself not only increases fitness, but it’s also good for your mental health. Making and keeping any kind of daily commitments strengthens your resolve and makes other obligations more attainable. To learn more about keystone habits, Cari recommends the book The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, available on audio.

EAT WELL Cari plans ahead. If she knows she will eat out Friday night, she makes an effort to eat better that day. Cari suggests “crowding out.” The more fiber you eat, the less room for junk. If you know you’re going to order dessert, eat two servings of vegetables for dinner so there isn’t much room left to gorge. Then, listen to your body as you enjoy dessert. When you are full, stop eating. “Avoid demonizing foods. You can eat whatever you want to, really. It’s about finding a balance,” Cari says.

I have learned that if I didn’t always know what I wanted, it was very helpful to know what I didn’t want and what I refused to settle for. I needed to be the one to set boundaries that were appropriate for me and what I wanted or didn’t want from life.” WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? I love learning. Real estate has provided a whole new area of business that I enjoy and look forward to working and learning more about. It is ever-changing and has so many aspects to it—negotiations, marketing, lending. My favorite thing is finding the perfect house for a person or family and showing them all the reasons to fall in love with their new forever home. WHAT IS THE BEST DECISION YOU EVER MADE? To put my teaching career on hold so I could fully engage as first lady and be a part of Butch’s years as governor. It truly is a team sport. I learned so much in the last 12 years about government, relationships and most importantly about myself. It was an honor to be able to serve Idaho and watch Butch do an amazing job at a job he loved. We made some amazing memories and left office proud of our accomplishments. WHAT IS AN ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT YOU ARE PROUD OF? My years as first lady and in particular our work at IWIL, Idaho Women in Leadership, a bipartisan effort to help women run for office in Idaho as well as providing coaching and opportunities for training in business leadership throughout the state. We are growing and finished our third year this March. It will continue to be a source of pride, and I hope it sustains for years to come.

I am so lucky to work with community and business leaders throughout the Treasure Valley through my work with the Leadership Boise and Boise Young Professionals programs at the Boise Metro Chamber. I love that part of my job is being connected to our community. Boise is full of talented, driven leaders, but unlike other markets, they’re also accessible. We are so lucky to be able to simply invite local business leaders or elected officials to coffee. That easy access and collaborative spirit are real drivers in the community. WHAT WOMAN INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? Many women in my life inspire me. My mom and sister are two of the strongest women I know. They have helped shape who I am today. Additionally, I choose to surround myself with women and men who are talented, passionate and collaborative. Having a support system where you can learn from and lean on each other is critical. I find myself incredibly fortunate to have an amazing community to lean on. WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED? My kids and family are my sustaining motivation. I am blessed with an amazing husband and three children: Harper, 8; Henley, 5; and our newest addition, Ander, 4 months. It was 1983, and this was a new concept in healthcare. I was a critical care nurse with no surgery background. One of the large hospitals in the Texas Medical Center where I worked had a day surgery center. When I made the decision to take the job with the surgeons, I asked for an appointment with the administrator of the hospital surgery center. She granted the meeting, but when she found out I did not have a surgical background, she quickly dismissed me, letting me know I was wasting her time and would not be successful. Four years later, we had a successful surgery center, and I began consulting across the state at struggling freestanding ambulatory surgery centers. While I was anxious and overwhelmed by what I had to learn and plan to direct and operate the center, my commitment to myself to never give up, never allow someone to define what you cannot do and never look back made me a successful young leader and has carried me throughout my career.” WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? It’s where meals are made and eaten, family and friends gather, laughter flows freely and memories are made. It’s easy to see why someone would want to make it as inviting, comfortable and beautiful as possible. Unfortunately, not every kitchen comes with all the features and extras we’d like to have. Remodel your space a chunk at a time. Don’t think that you have to do it all at once. Start small: update the lighting fixtures or faucets or hardware to something more modern. These upgrades don’t take a lot of time or money, and the results can make a big impact. Trends are ever-changing, and it’s no different in the remodeling world. “…[grays] are starting to phase out toward some more bolder colors as accents as well as some of the more earthy tones,” Don says. While there are a lot of things you can do on your own to give your space a fresh look, grander plans are better left to the professionals. Don't try knocking down walls or putting in windows on your own. Get in touch with a professional you can trust. And don’t think that you're stuck with the current shape of your kitchen. Upper-elevation trails let you escape the summer heat.

Being a mountain biker, I tend to head a little farther up in the trail system, but it’s rare I don’t see hikers out there as well. These mid-elevation trails tend to form longer loops, and among my favorite are those taking off from the Dry Creek Trailhead near Hidden Springs and Polecat Gulch Traihead (off Cartwright Road) and the Corrals, Miller Gulch and Dry Creek trailheads off Bogus Basin Road are also good jumping off points. Depending on the amount of snow Bogus Basin gets during winter and spring weather conditions, trails in the upper Foothills typically open by June, which give you nice, cool hikes in the forest and access to upper elevations like Shafter Butte trails and Stack Rock. Both newcomers to the Treasure Valley and old timers share a couple things. They’ve probably spent at least some time in the Foothills and experienced the trails, but they’ve also probably never hiked all of them, so there’s always more trails to explore. And they’re right out your back door just minutes away. There are no fees, no dues, and no excuses, so get out and enjoy them.

Most Foothills trails are multi-use, so be courteous to others.

WHAT DEFINING MOMENTS SET YOU ON YOUR CAREER PATH? Susan: Wanting to create jobs for women inspired me. Roshan: Choosing a career where I could be creative and use my leadership skills to help my family and community.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Susan and Roshan: We both are motivated by addressing needs and desires in the market and creatively coming up with beautiful projects and concepts that people will fall in love with and can help them simultaneously.

WHAT ARE YOUR SUCCESS HABITS? Roshan: Do things on your own terms. Do not be afraid of failure or not meeting expectations; it is the only path to learning and success. Figure out what works for you to meet your goals instead of only taking the advice of others. All people have their own ways of achieving things. Susan: Envision your project, then analyze it and take the time to work out details.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS? Susan: Pick something your heart has been passionate about since childhood, and if it still interests you as an adult, go for it! Roshan: Don’t do something unless you’re passionate about it. If it doesn’t make you feel good, you will spend your time in anxiety or guilt instead of creativity, freedom and loving principles that will bring up everyone and everything around you.
