BOISE BREWING WINS GOLD AT WORLD BEER CUP Boise Brewing claimed a gold award in the 2018 World Beer Cup, a global beer competition that evaluates beers from around the world and recognizes the most outstanding brewers and their beers. Awards were given in 101 beer-style categories during the World Beer Cup award ceremony in Nashville. Boise Brewing was awarded a gold award in the American-Style Stout category for its Black Cliffs, a roasty, rich and balanced stout with plentiful Northwest hop character. THE RAPID GROWTH OF THE TREASURE VALLEY HAS BEEN A CONCERN FOR SOME RESIDENTS WHO FEAR THAT THE THINGS THEY LOVE ABOUT THIS AREA WILL BE LOST IF OUR CITY CONTINUES TO GROW AT THE CURRENT PACE. The commercial real estate experts at Cushman & Wakefield Pacific share their insight. “Resistance may be the largest challenge during this period of rapid growth," Sara Shropshire says. "Acceptance opens doors to more thoughtful growth and the ability to be prepared and proactive. The key to accepting this growth is to focus on the positive aspects our community experiences as a result of a growing economy and community. “With growth comes increased diversity and new creative business concepts that are started by those moving into our community like restaurants, clothing boutiques and smaller startup companies,” Andrea Nilson says. “As those companies and businesses grow, they attract new young talent, which in turn seems to fuel downtown living, which then brings it back full circle and fuels the need for additional retail services. There are several communities with their eyes on Boise right now watching to see how we handle the growth and looking to us to set an example.” Some of the anxiety over this growth is related to increased traffic congestion and increased cost of living. Collaboration is one strategy for cultivating growth in a responsible way. “Counties, municipalities in conjunction with the state level need a tremendous amount of collaboration on the transportation and venue side,” Andrea says. “Utilizing and modifying mechanisms currently in place to fund new schools, new roads and new venues... For 32 years, Alive After Five has been celebrating live music in the heart of downtown Boise. The Downtown Boise Association produces Alive After Five as a way to build both community and local business. Its goal is to make all Idahoans proud of the heart of their capital city, to bring the community together with great music and to keep the downtown business district thriving. In 2017, between 3,500 and 5,000 people attended Alive After Five each week. Many came early or stayed late, enjoyed the new fountain, went shopping, and got a great meal or cool drink at a favorite downtown hot spot. The event featured 27 artists, both local and nationally touring, and tips from beverages contributed $18,269 to three local charities who provided volunteers for the event. Check it out this summer from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Wednesday through Aug. 29.

LAUREL MEYER HAS FOUND THAT DELICATE BALANCE BETWEEN WORK THAT SHE LOVES, SPENDING TIME WITH FAMILY, TAKING CARE OF OUR ENVIRONMENT AND MAKING IDAHO A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE. When her children were young she made the decision to take a break from the retail world and sold her first shop. Laurel explains, “As time went on, I felt fragmented between family and work and realized that my heart was at home with my family. My husband and I decided to sell our shop so that I could stay home and raise our children. When our youngest child started college, I was enthusiastic to get back into retail.” They opened Roost, a gift and home decor store, 664 S. Rivershore Lane, Suite 166, in Eagle. In addition to running the store, Laurel also makes time to serve the community.

As more people from California and Arizona move to Idaho, families are accustomed to having a private pool. Homeowners are also investing in recreation at home as opposed to taking big vacations. The new technology in fiberglass pools is changing the industry as homeowners realize that pools are easier to maintain and install and are more durable than pools of the past.
