GOVERNOR APPOINTS BOISE RESIDENT TO IDAHO OIL AND GAS CONSERVATION COMMISSION Gov. Butch Otter has announced the appointment of Boise resident James Classen to the Idaho Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. The commission regulates the exploration, drilling and production of oil and gas resources on private, state and federal land in Idaho. Classen is a petroleum exploration geologist and geological engineer with more than 50 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. The ingredients of that story make up the entirety of Rex Chandler’s more than 40-year restaurant career. When you grow up in Newport Beach, California, it’s hard not to get into surfing, and the bug bit Rex early. During the 1960s, while he was paying his way through art school with restaurant work, he decided to heed the call of Hawaiian waves. called Nick’s Fish Market. It didn’t take long to discover that his true passion was the restaurant business and, as it turned out, he was also very good at it. Four years later he opened his own restaurant in Honolulu, and not long after that, he bought Nick’s. So began a lifelong journey in fine dining that took Rex from Hawaii back to Newport Beach before landing him in Idaho, where he opened Chandlers in Ketchum in 1993, followed shortly by Baci, right next door. Fifteen years later, three of the many friends he had made in Idaho provided the impetus for his move to Boise. “We had this vision about a boutique hotel with an independently owned fine dining steakhouse, and we thought the timing was perfect for an upscale restaurant in Boise,” he recalls. That vision, of course, was Hotel 43 and Chandlers, the pride of Grove Street, and it contains the best from all his years of experience. “If I could take you back in a time capsule, you would see a little of all those other restaurants in this one.” He’ll be the first to tell you that he didn’t make his journey alone and that the connections he’s made all along the way are a big part of his success today. Take William and Derek at the Honolulu Fish Company. Rex has known them for more than 30 years, and they are the exclusive supplier of Hawaiian seafood for Chandlers. “It’s their specialty,” Rex says. “They’re the only company in Hawaii that deals specifically with high-end mainland restaurants like The

French Laundry, Tru, La Bernadin and, of course, Chandlers. We’re the only restaurant in Idaho that has fish shipped directly from Honolulu. It arrives within one day of being caught, and the quality is unparalleled.” But as much as the fine dining experience is about what you see, it’s a lot about what you don’t see. Like the kitchen, also expanded during the recent million-dollar makeover. “Chef Luis [Flores] is probably the best chef I’ve had in my entire career,” Rex says with pride. “I heard he wanted to move to Idaho and I knew he would be the right guy for us. He’s been with us since day one.” Rex’s artistic eye and Chef Luis’ talent for preparing food that charms and delights the senses have combined to create a menu unlike any other in the state. It’s a team effort that extends to the rest of the staff as well. Any fine dining experience calls for servers who are both knowledgeable and friendly, and it always helps when they love their job. The family atmosphere that Rex creates among his employees goes a long way toward making your fine dining experience truly unforgettable. Monthly classes for the staff offer education on a variety of food and drink topics and weekly staff meetings focus on what can be done to refine the customer experience. “We’re looking to improve every day,” General Manager David Boyle says. “We never settle.” The culinary renaissance Boise is currently experiencing was no doubt fueled in large part by Rex’s legacy of excellence. “Everyone likes to be on a winning team,” he says with a cordial smile. "The legacy is all about our staff. The Ranch Club has stood at the Orchard and Chinden crossroads for over half a century, its stallion drawing attention from passersby. When new owner, Jason Kovac bought the Ranch Club in February of this year, it was in need of some TLC and that is exactly what Kovac gave it. From a thorough deep cleaning, to new windows and stage, to a remodeled entrance, the Ranch was restored to its former glory for its reopening on June 2nd. The biggest update: the Ranch Club is newly a nonsmoking establishment. The Ranch Club menu has been refreshed by Le Cordon Bleu Chef Joel Thomas and includes country style food with a hint of Basque thrown in. A selection of appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, soups, salads, and classic country entrees is available. Food is made from scratch and features beef from Double R Ranch. Chicken is hand battered and fries are house cut. Diners can stick with country favorites like Brisket Chili or the Bronco Billy burger, named for the Clint Eastwood movie filmed at the Ranch Club in 1980, or they can try something a little more rustic such as Elk Meatloaf or Pan Seared Trout.

Expert bikers can soar on the jump lines.

he Eagle/Ada Sports Complex has grown from its dusty origins as a dry patch of sagebrush and cheatgrass east of Eagle to one of the most vibrant, unique parks in the Treasure Valley. The park’s calling card is its bike facilities, but it’s also a hangout for skaters, hikers, trail runners, dog walkers and a hardy bunch of roller derby gals. Let’s start with the biking because that’s how the park originated. Years ago, a group of local bikers looked at an

undeveloped section of the lower Boise Foothills and envisioned a network of mountain bike trails. Through mostly volunteer labor and with permission from the local government they scratched out several miles of trails. Those trails sparked the Eagle Bike Park, which later became a joint operation between the city of Eagle and Ada County and renamed the Eagle/Ada Sports Complex. Fast forward years later and it’s one of the Treasure Valley’s favorite cycling and recreation hubs.

On race days, tykes to teens stare at a steel gate about to fall and then sprint around an undulating BMX track. The racers, organizers and volunteers are a multiage family gathering and they make every race a festival. Above them, folks cruise mountain bikes on ribbons of tan singletrack trail with panoramic views that stretch all the way to the Owyhees. It’s common to see kids on their first bikes grunting up the short-but-steep climbs, or gray beards pedaling shiny, full-suspension bikes that probably cost more than their first cars. At the top, a group of full-face helmeted riders in pads and armor attacks the park’s downhill-only trails that are riddled with soaring jumps, white-knuckle platform drops and steeply bermed corners so the riders can milk every ounce of gravity-fueled speed. Nearby, the brave and skilled test themselves on the jump lines, which are as the name implies. The goal isn’t to ride a trail; it’s to perfect your airborne skills with style and precision and hopefully avoid an impromptu trip to St. Luke’s urgent care. At the bottom of the park, kids pedal their bikes around the “pump track,” which is a series of humps, bumps and corners similar to a mini BMX track where they master the basics and get a taste of what they will soon ride elsewhere at the park. Bikers are rarely alone at the Eagle/Ada Sports Complex. The sculpted skateboard park is a magnet for neighborhood groms on skateboards, scooters and bikes and the kids put on a display of tricks that make

old-schoolers tip their hats in respect and silently ask “how did these kids get so good?” Roller-skating gals practice on the cement hockey rink and they're the next wave of derby gals—athletes with a hint of Riot Girl. You can’t watch them and not appreciate the verve, style and soul they bring to their sport. Part of the fun of the park is its laid-back vibe. People get along, and you might see a bearded, tattooed mountain biker giving tips to a young rider, or moms in minivans unloading a tangle of bikes and shooing the kids off to ride while they relax in lawn chairs. Or, they’re just as likely to pull out a bike of their own and join the young chargers. Like most community parks, there’s no admission to the Eagle/Ada Sports Complex except this: Bring a good attitude, respect others and get along, whether you’re riding, hiking, walking your dog or shredding the skate park. Burn some energy, appreciate the vibe and when the opportunity comes to help maintain trails, help with races, improve facilities or advocate for the park, step in and do your part. The Eagle/Ada Sports Complex is located on Old Horseshoe Bend Road just north of its intersection with Floating Feather Road near the border of Eagle and northwest Boise. It features a 12,500-square-foot skateboard park, basketball hoops, picnic area and restrooms. The skate park was a joint effort by the city of Eagle and Ada County. Other features include bike trails and a BMX course.

mong many other things, I'm a sucker for a story that deals with the strong and complicated relationships that exist within families. Probably because we all have them, it's too easy to take them for granted, and we sometimes need to be reminded of their importance through books or TV/cinema. Driftwood Summer is one of those books. It takes place in a quaint Southern beach town and centers around a bookstore and the family that owns it; enter the typical crazy, controlling mother, Kitsy Sheffield, and her three daughters. With summer, comes secrets, resentment, love and, eventually, forgiveness. Driftwood Summer is an engaging novel— although at times a bit clichéd—that isn't too overly intense when it comes to the Sheffield sister's drama. There's a light, clean romance that isn't the center of the story and the message of family being there for you through it all no matter what is strong. Overall, I say this is a worthy read for the end of summer.

Don't let the title fool you—this is not a romance novel. If you're familiar with the author at all, you'll know it's a crime thriller with a paranormal twist. My mom recommended this book to me, and I have to admit that after finishing The Lovers, I hurried over to my local library to see what other John Connolly books were available; more specifically, what other Charlie Parker novels were out. He is a fantastic writer, with in-depth plots so far from predictable that I eventually stopped trying to guess "who done it." Charlie's first wife and daughter were murdered gruesomely, and although he caught and killed the guilty party (in a prior book), he's still haunted—literally—by their ghosts and what happened. The Lovers brings in the history of his police officer father, who ended up killing two unarmed teens and ultimately committed suicide. Charlie knows there's more to the story and he's committed to finding out what. That's when Charlie Parker gets more than he

bargained for and more than he understands. Although there is a paranormal element to the Charlie Parker series, it was watered down and still made the storyline believable, and at the end of the story, there was a real solution, not just a deus ex machina sort of ending, and I appreciated that. The book is at times a bit dark, dealing with some pretty gruesome murders and a few reincarnated demon-type characters, so I wouldn't recommend it to the faint of heart. But if you like a good thriller and are a fan of the mysterious paranormal, this is right up your alley.

• 12-inch pie crusts

1. Heat oven to 400º F.

• 1⁄2 cup sugar

2. Mix 1/2 cup sugar and the flour in large bowl. Stir in apples. The sugar-flour mixture

5. Cut 1 tablespoon butter into 5 or 6 small pieces; spread on top of the apples.

6. Bake 27 to 32 minutes or until crust is golden brown. 7. Cut into wedges. Serve warm drizzled with caramel topping.
