Making Life Pop

“Here’s to strong women. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.”

I’m not sure who said it, but as a man, I find the sentiment both powerful and challenging. I am lucky to know many such women. My wife is an obvious example. I’ve seen her walk through incredibly painful and uncertain days with a confidence and optimism I could only hope to match. My mother raised three boys and—miraculously—stayed sane and loves us all deeply to this day. Our publisher has been steadfast and hopeful during some of the darkest seasons imaginable. Many other women around me have shown such strength as they’ve faced challenges that would break lesser men, leaving me to wonder: Would I be that resilient?

Raising a daughter has thrust the "raising them" part of that quote into glaring reality. Some days, I feel I’m successfully shaping the woman she’ll become. Other days, she’s the one shaping me—teaching me patience, adaptability, and how to prepare a snack in ten seconds flat. It’s usually around the 51st attempt to get her to stay in bed that I wonder: Am I making her world better?

While these questions are a lot to wrestle with, I find them mostly inspiring—a prompt to support the women around me and, in turn, to help us all flourish.

You’ll find that the women in these pages are doing the same. From a mother-daughter duo of sculptors brightening the world through art (“A Bond Forged in Bronze,” p. 30) to six local leaders who make empowering others their fulltime work (“Lifting Others As They Lead,” p. 56). We’ve also got tips for effortless beauty (“Fresh Face, All Day,” p. 68). And we’re all grown up enough to admit it, right? Mom did know what she was talking about. So we’ve rounded up your favorite bits of advice and inspiration (“Mother Knows Best,” p. 50).

This issue is fun, wise, and beautiful—just like the women in our lives. The invitation is for all of us to be more like them. To be encouraging and innovative. To make the world pop with meaning and life. So, I’ll offer a version of the quote from my perspective:

“Here’s to strong women. May we know them, may we raise them, and may we be worthy to be their partners in the world.”

A Bond Forged in Bronze

Mother-and-daughter artists Marianne and Scy Caroselli share a lifelong devotion to sculpture, creating bronze works that reflect perseverance, creativity, and the love between generations.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

When Marianne and Scy Caroselli talk about art, the conversation moves effortlessly between memories, laughter, and the serene gravity of the craft. One story leads to another, recollections prompt corrections, jokes follow, and soon enough, another story begins. One thing quickly becomes clear: sculpture is more than a profession for the two of them. It’s a shared language.

For Scy (pronounced like “sky”), that connection started before she ever picked up clay herself. “I grew up in a little playpen next to my mom’s easel,” she recalls with a smile. “Art was always there. We were all models at some point. Sometimes we hated it. Mom would say, ‘Just hold the bucket like you’re feeding the horse. Don’t smile. Don’t move.’”

Marianne laughs at the memory, too, recalling a time decades earlier when her art career began. “At ten years old, that’s all I wanted to do,” she says. “I started my own little business painting ceramics. I was chosen as the class artist at high school graduation and went on to art school afterward. I’ve just been doing art ever since.”

After years devoted primarily to painting—traveling to art shows, selling her work, and building her reputation—Marianne eventually faced a practical decision: painting or sculpture. “I was doing both and getting tired,” she says. “So I had to decide. With sculpture, you can create an edition from one piece. From a business standpoint, that made sense.” That combination of artistic instinct and business savvy helped launch a successful career. One of her paintings, End of the Trail , became a best-selling poster, appeared on greeting cards, and continues to generate royalties decades later.

Over time, however, sculpture became Marianne’s true home. “I was at an art show where another featured artist was a sculptor,” she recalls. She says the medium has always had a definite allure. “You can get lost in it,” she says. “Hours go by, and you don’t even realize it.”

While building her career, Marianne also raised four children. After they went to bed, she would head to the garage studio and work until midnight. This creative atmosphere shaped Scy deeply.

“I remember being amazed at what Mom could create,” she says. “She could just start sculpting, and suddenly this beautiful horse or figure would appear. I was always blown away by how fast and how good she was.”

Despite this influence, Scy wasn’t sure she wanted to take the same path. “I actually started out as an art agent,” she explains. “I sold art rather than making it. Mom kept encouraging me to sculpt, but I kept telling her, ‘You sculpt, I sell. We’ve got a good thing going here.’”

But Marianne didn’t give up. One Christmas, she handed her daughter a large box filled with clay and sculpting armatures. “She basically said, ‘I grew up in a sculpting family, and you should sculpt too,’” Scy says, laughing. “So I tried it.” Her first piece was a horse—a Clydesdale—inspired by her love of the breed. “I started sculpting. I was surprised at how much of it came naturally,” she says. “All those years of watching Mom must have stuck with me.”

A turning point came years later, when Marianne took Scy to Italy to study sculpture. “We stayed in Pietrasanta, where Michelangelo lived while working on David,” Scy says. “We even visited the marble quarries he used. Being surrounded by all that history—it was overwhelming in the best way.” That experience in Italy sealed her commitment:

“Long after we’re gone, the sculptures will still be there— lasting reminders that art, family, and creativity can shape something meaningful that endures across generations.”
—Scy Caroselli

“That’s when I knew. This is what I want to do for the rest of my life.”

Now, both Marianne and Scy work in bronze, each developing a signature style. Marianne’s sculptures often capture joyful, lighthearted scenes of children at play, animals, or moments that evoke happiness and nostalgia. “I like to sculpt things that make people happy,” she says. “One woman told me she wakes up every morning, sees one of my sculptures, and it makes her smile. That meant a lot to me.” Scy’s work incorporates symbolism and often conveys deeper messages, particularly themes of empowerment and resilience. “I like creating pieces that inspire people,” she says. “Many of my sculptures focus on empowering women, showing perseverance, leadership, and strength.”

One of her most significant works, an eightfoot bronze sculpture called Transcendence, stands in the healing garden at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Colorado. The sculpture depicts a woman whose back is textured to represent life’s struggles, while the smooth front symbolizes perseverance. “It sits between the cancer center and the maternity ward,” Scy says. “The idea is that we go through hardships in life, but we rise above them.”

The emotional impact of that work became clear when she saw a photograph of a cancer patient standing beside the sculpture. “She had no hair. She looked very weak. But she stood up from her wheelchair and touched the sculpture,” Scy says. “If something I created can inspire even one person, that means everything.”

While their styles differ, their relationship remains close. “She’s my best friend,” Scy says warmly. “If I get tickets to go somewhere, she’s the first person I think of asking.”

Constructive feedback flows freely, too. “I’ll send Mom a picture and ask, ‘What do you see wrong?’” Scy says. “She’ll say, ‘Twist it more. Add more movement.’” Marianne beams when she talks about her daughter’s work. “What I admire about Scy’s sculptures is the meaning behind them,” she says. “Mine make people smile. Hers touch people’s hearts.”

Behind every work, the casting process demands patience and precision. That stage can take weeks and involves highly skilled artisans. “It’s a long, complicated process,” she says. “But when you finally see the finished piece, it’s worth it.”

Managing a thriving art business requires more than creating sculptures. “We have sculptures in multiple galleries across the country,” Scy says. “So there’s a lot of paperwork and organization involved.” Marianne has spent years traveling to shows across the United States, building those connections. “You meet wonderful people,” she says. “Customers become friends.”

A career milestone arrived when Scy’s sales surpassed Marianne’s. “That was my dream,” she says. “My biggest happiness was when she outsold me. I thought, ‘Now I can relax.’” Scy laughs at that memory. “When people come into the booth looking at Mom’s sculptures, she’ll say, ‘Look at my daughter’s work,’ and send them over to my side,” she says.

Thinking of future artists, Marianne is encouraging, if also candid and direct. “Know what the public wants,” she says. “You have to make something people will fall in love with.” Meanwhile, Scy adds another perspective. “My advice is to keep going,” she says. “Don’t give up.” In the end, that’s what it’s about for both women: legacy and endurance. Scy reflects, “Long after we’re gone, the sculptures will still be there.”

In the case of Marianne and Scy Caroselli, those sculptures represent more than art. They represent a shared passion, a family legacy, and a bond forged over decades of creativity. Their work isn’t just sculpture. It’s the story of a family shaping something lasting together. “We’ve had so much fun doing this together,” Scy says. Marianne smiles, adding, “And she’s taken it even further.”

Marianne and Scy Caroselli share more than a family bond—they share a lifelong devotion to sculpture. Marianne began her career as a painter before discovering bronze sculpture, eventually building a nationally recognized body of work known for joyful, expressive figures. Her daughter, Scy, grew up surrounded by art and later found her own path in sculpture after years working as an art agent. Today, both women create bronze pieces collected across the United States, ranging from gallery works to large-scale public installations. While Marianne’s sculptures often celebrate moments of happiness and nostalgia, Scy’s work frequently examines themes of perseverance and empowerment. Together, they preserve a creative legacy formed by decades of artistry, craftsmanship, and family connection.

THE MOST MEANINGFUL PURSUIT

To the women striving for success—in their careers, at home, and in themselves—motivational speaker and life coach Jessica Smarro offers a challenge and the encouragement you need.

On paper, her life looks good. The career is solid. The house is beautiful. The marriage works. The kids are in the right schools. Her calendar is full, her résumé is impressive, and by every external measure, she is doing exactly what she is supposed to be doing. And yet a quiet question keeps surfacing in the background of her mind: Is this it?

The question confuses her because nothing is objectively wrong. She isn’t unhappy. She isn’t ungrateful. In fact, she worked very hard to build this life. But somewhere along the way, achievement replaced alignment, and she didn’t notice when the shift happened.

I work with women like this every day. They are accomplished, driven, and capital-R responsible. They followed the rulebook, checked the boxes, and built lives that look successful from the outside. Yet they sit across from me and say some version of the same thing: “I should feel happier than I do.”

That sentence tells me she followed the rules, but somewhere along the way, she stopped consulting herself. Many of us were taught to measure success externally, to chase promotions, titles, revenue, and applause. But external success and internal fulfillment are not the same thing, and most of us were never taught the difference.

BREAKING THE ADDICTION

In my book In Pursuit, I call this dynamic “Arrival Addiction,” the belief that when we finally get “there,” we’ll feel

different—calmer, confident, complete. But here’s the sneaky part: the destination almost always feels like the journey. When you hit the goal, you’re still you with the same brain that narrated the entire trip. If you didn’t feel whole, satisfied, or fulfilled on the way there, the finish line won’t deliver those feelings, at least not in a lasting way. A change in circumstances—a promotion, a milestone, a bigger bank account—doesn’t fundamentally change how your mind works. When the external situation shifts but your thinking doesn’t, the internal experience of life stays the same. You reach the goal, but the doubts still creep in, and restlessness still shows up. Then you run the risk of assuming the problem must be you; that you’re ungrateful, broken, or dramatic. I tend to see it differently. I see that discomfort as growth. It’s the subtle awareness that you’ve outgrown the version of success you were chasing. Achievement without alignment feels like living in blackand-white. Technically, everything is fine, but it feels flat. The milestones are met, yet the vitality and the sense that you’re fully inside your life are missing.

THE HIGH-ACHIEVEMENT TRAP

High-achieving women are particularly susceptible to this. Many of us learned early that competence earned praise, agreeableness kept the peace, and excellence made us valuable. Over time, we became very good at contorting ourselves to meet expectations until we can no longer tell which parts of us are real and which were curated for approval.

“OFTEN, DESIRE ISN’T REALLY ABOUT THE THING ITSELF. IT’S ABOUT WHO WE BECOME IN THE PURSUIT.”

Self-abandonment rarely happens dramatically. It happens subtly. You say “yes” when you mean “no,” you override your instincts, and silence your desires because they seem impractical or inconvenient. You build a life that makes sense to everyone else and then wonder why you feel like a stranger inside it.

Fulfillment requires something different. It requires self-honesty. Before your mind sends off panic alarms, let me clarify: self-honesty doesn’t mean blowing up your life or making reckless decisions. It simply begins with being willing to hear yourself, even if you don’t act on what you hear right away.

The first step is just telling yourself the truth. You might begin with questions like: Would Today Me choose this again?

If I weren’t already here—in this job, this routine, this role—would I step into it now?

If the answer is “no,” that’s not a crisis. It’s information. It points to desire, and desire is information.

TRUSTING YOURSELF AGAIN

Many of us were taught to distrust desire, to judge it or filter it through practicality before we ever let ourselves feel it. But desire isn’t frivolous. It’s directional. It points toward the parts of us that want to grow, expand, and express ourselves more fully. Often, desire isn’t really about the thing itself. It’s about who we become in the pursuit.

Take something like a business revenue goal. On the surface, it may appear that the pursuit is about the number or the milestone itself. But when I look at goals like that in my own life, the number is the least interesting part of the equation. What matters is who I become in order to create it. Reaching the goal requires that I release limiting beliefs about money and worth. I have to expand my leadership, trust my ideas, and use my voice more boldly. I have to develop resilience when things don’t work the first time.

The real transformation isn’t in the bank account. It’s in the person I become while pursuing it. That’s the deeper function of desire. It calls forward parts of us that might otherwise remain dormant. The external goal becomes the vehicle for internal evolution.

REALLY FINDING FULFILLMENT

Fulfillment doesn’t require you to shrink your ambitions. It asks you to examine why you’re pursuing them. When goals come from a place of lack or hoping achievement will finally fix something inside us, they rarely satisfy for long. But when they come from wholeness, the pursuit itself becomes meaningful.

If you’ve ever wondered whether there might be more available to you, that question is evidence that something in you is waking up. And that awakening might just be the most meaningful pursuit of all.

Mandy Majors of nextTalk says to stop panicking, start relating, and work with your kids to protect their own hearts and minds from dangers online.

HOW TO DEBUG YOUR DIGITAL PARENTING

In the early 2010s, Mandy Majors lived through the nightmare scenario that every parent dreads. It didn’t happen through a late-night chat room or in a hidden app; it happened on a normal morning during the school rush. Her nine-year-old daughter asked a question about an adult topic she had heard about at the school lunch table.

At the time, Majors thought she had the solution: no phones at all for the kids. But that morning changed everything. “That was the moment that I realized not giving them a phone wouldn’t protect them from online dangers,” she recalls. “I believe in delaying the phone, absolutely... but we cannot delay the conversations.”

Now, more than a decade later, Majors is the founder of the nonprofit nextTalk, where she advocates for a relationship-first approach to digital safety. Her philosophy is a radical departure from the fear-based, high-control tactics that many parents default to. Instead of acting as a digital warden, Majors argues that parents must transition from a role of protection to one of preparation.

PROTECTING VS. PREPARING

When children are toddlers, parents have significant control over their environments. But as they enter adolescence, that control disappears. Majors realized early on that her job wasn't just to keep bad things away from her kids, but to teach her kids how to handle the bad things when a parent isn’t around.

“I realized I needed to teach them how to prepare to protect their own hearts and minds,” she says. “They had to become advocates for themselves.” By discussing the why behind boundaries—like why a horror movie can cause nightmares or why certain images stick in the brain—she helped her children develop their own internal filters.

THE PROBLEM WITH TECH TOOLS

While Majors utilizes parental controls and monitoring apps, she warns parents not to view them as a magic answer to their problems. In her experience, workarounds are still there. “With every tool that I have found, there are always loopholes,” Majors explains. “Restrictions are great, but we need to be focusing more on building a healthy dialogue with our kids than researching Wi-Fi routers.”

Her “nextTalk10” principles emphasize that a parent’s relationship with their kids is the most powerful security feature. If a child views something inappropriate or gets into a scary situation online, the goal is for the parent to be the first person they tell.

CONTINUED >

TURNING OFF “CRAZY PARENT MODE”

To build this trust, Majors teaches “Red Flag Reporting.” This is a simple list of things kids should report to parents or trusted adults, such as seeing “body parts” or being asked to keep a secret. The catch? The grown-up has to handle the report without exploding.

“If you overreact and say, ‘You can't play with that neighbor anymore!’ or ‘You can't

“IF YOU OVERREACT AND SAY, ‘YOU CAN’T PLAY WITH THAT NEIGHBOR ANYMORE!’... THEY ARE NEVER GOING TO TELL YOU AGAIN. I TELL PARENTS ALL THE TIME THAT IT IS A PARENTING WIN IF YOUR CHILD TELLS YOU—NO MATTER WHAT.”

have that app anymore!’ they are never going to tell you again,” Majors warns. “I tell parents all the time that it is a parenting win if your child tells you—no matter what.”

PRESSING “RESET”

For parents who feel they’ve already lost control and their kids are already tech-obsessed, Majors offers a path back. She advises against “going in guns blazing” to snatch away devices. Instead, she suggests a reset that begins with humility.

“Start with an apology; own your part,” she suggests. “Something like, ‘I gave you this phone not knowing, and I am sorry. I messed up.’” By owning the mistake, parents can invite their children into a team effort to create healthier guidelines, like the “no screens in bedrooms or bathrooms” rule that Majors credits as her most impactful boundary.

Ultimately, Majors’ message is one of hope: “It's never too late, no matter what the age of your child, to start building a healthier relationship with them.”

“Treat people the way you want to be treated.” My mom always reminded me to lead with kindness and compassion. That advice has shaped not only how I live my life, but how we run Fair Oaks Emergency Room. Compassion isn’t just a value for us; it’s our foundation, and we thank my mom for that. —Diana

The life-changing lessons we’ve finally admitted she was right about.

KNOWS BEST Mother

“Donut holes don’t have calories.” This is my favorite mom-ism from the one who can find joy in just about anything! —Caroline

They say she’s always right. It turns out, she pretty much always is. For our May issue, we’ve collected the most profound, hilarious, and life-changing advice your mothers ever gave you. Accompanied by your favorite photos, these are the lessons that prove “mamma knows best” isn’t just a pithy phrase—it’s a legacy we get to live.

My mom loves people. She’ll talk to any stranger, and, now, so do I. Something I used to make fun of her for, my sister and I both do now. I love it because we make friends everywhere. Now my kids give me the hardest time about it! —Jessi

TERRY

DOLORES

My mother was a force. She was petite and shy and endured a lot in her fight with lupus. Back then, she would tell my sister and me that she needed to “take one day at a time.”

As a mother myself now, I recall those words when I start to get carried away with emotion, thinking about my junior in high school and his eventual leaving the nest to go away to college. Or I share them with my 13-year-old daughter when she sometimes puts herself in overdrive with her school work and activities. I use her words to be in the moment with them and remind myself that the days are long and the years are short. As she would always say, “You can only take one day at a time.”

—Jennifer

My mom was married for 41 years, until my dad passed away in 2011. Her relationship advice is, “Value your intuition about your feelings for a person. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. And don’t excuse it away. You deserve far better than how you feel about yourself.” —Tanesha

When I look back, what stands out most is my mom’s constant thoughtfulness and care for others. Every week, she would prepare a meal for someone in need—a new mother, an elderly couple from church, or someone who was ill. No matter the circumstance, she showed up with food and a desire to make their day a little easier. Watching her serve others so consistently shaped who I am today. As an adult, I’ve tried to carry that same spirit with me, and every time I deliver a meal to someone, I think of her and the example she set.

Every time I left the house, my mom said, “Make wise choices and be a good representative of our family!” Every time she left the house, my mom said, “Keep the laundry going!” —Taryn

My mom has always said, “Patience is a virtue,” and she lives this every day. She’s the kind of person who moves slowly and thoughtfully, giving everything the time it deserves. She would remind me of this constantly… when I was rushing toward the next bigger, better thing, or trying to get through something I didn’t enjoy as quickly as possible. Back then, it drove me crazy!  Now, it’s her voice I hear all the time. It reminds me to slow down, to be present, and to give even the toughest moments the grace they deserve. Over time, I’ve realized that the most meaningful parts of life aren’t meant to be rushed—they’re meant to be lived fully. —Samantha

I remember that when I was growing up, there was a crossstitched sign in one of our bathrooms. The words have resonated with me time and time again. “Please be patient. God isn’t finished with me yet.” I am often reminded of this piece of advice when I self-reflect on my actions as a parent, a spouse, and in the workforce. It has allowed me to give myself grace when I fall short and know that I am always a work in progress. —Jamie

My mom always says things like, “Use your frontal lobe,” “Remember it’s not just about you, think of the other person,” or, “The result does not matter as long as you tried your best.”

—Connor

My mom’s words mean so much, but the one thing that stands out to me and makes the greatest impression is seeing them in action. I walked into my parents’ bedroom one day and saw her Bible open, with my brother’s and my names throughout the pages. Her heart and the time she took to pray for us said more to me than any words spoken. —Kim

My mother passed away 10 years ago, but I have a card where she said, “I love you infinity. Sometimes life can seem like a heavy burden, and it is difficult to even get out of bed in the mornings. No fancy occasion, no special day, but reach out to those who matter the most.”

My advice to my kids today is this: “Happiness is not the goal. It’s loving yourself, so that when you aren’t happy, you’re still going to be okay.” —Suzanne

In the art appreciation class my mom taught, she once said, “Anything beautiful in the world is the work of God.” That message broadened my perspective to see that beauty and the divine can be found everywhere—landscapes I’m seeing for the first time, music from another culture, flowers growing in faraway places, food I haven’t tried yet… It’s all beautiful and made to bring us joy and inspiration! —Daniel

My mom encouraged me to get a college degree and a career so I could be proud of my accomplishments and always support myself. My mom is a proud first-generation Scotch-Irish American, one of ten siblings, and a devoted mother of five, who raised her children grounded in faith and gratitude. —Brian

My mom is a ferocious lover of her family, and she taught me what it truly means to advocate for the people you love. Not to simply accept information at face value, but to press in, ask questions, and seek understanding to ensure the best possible outcome.

From a young age, I watched her work—often multiple jobs—to provide for our family. Her primary role as a realtor eventually led her into appraisal work, and she brought me alongside her in that process. I was paid per report completed—on a typewriter—and through that, I learned early on that nothing is simply given. “At its heart, my work is about people, and helping incredible clients build the financial life they’ve always dreamed of.”

Elizabeth Flavin Crawford

Sendero Wealth Management, Partner, CEO, & Founder of The Women’s Initiative

As a leader at a wealth management firm, you’d think Elizabeth Flavin Crawford’s career would revolve entirely around money. But with nearly 30 years in the field, Crawford says her job is about something else entirely. “At its heart, my work is about people and helping incredible clients build the financial life they’ve always dreamed of—which makes it one of the most rewarding jobs in the world.”

It’s that mentality that has made all the difference. Over the course of eight years, Crawford has grown Sendero Wealth Management and broadened its perspective to reflect a broader mission. It’s been possible, she says, thanks to “an extraordinary team of people who show up every day with their whole hearts.”

They’re not just extraordinary, though. They care. By providing volunteer, charitable, and educational support to organizations in Boerne, the firm is living out a foundational principle, Crawford says. “We believe in showing up fully for the communities we serve.”

That’s led to a particular emphasis on building up women and their knowledge of and comfort with the world of finance: “Women didn’t always lift each other up in this industry, and I decided early on I’d be different; mentoring, speaking, teaching financial literacy, and cheering loudly for every woman willing to bet on herself.”

Felishia Shinn

“That sense of connection, guidance, and shared experience is powerful. It gives you the confidence to take another step forward because it has been done before.”

FELISHIA SHINN

LS4 3D Printing, Co-founder

It’s a high-tech one, but LS4 3D Printing is really a family business. To hear Felishia Shinn describe it: “My work focuses on bringing emerging technologies like 3D printing into applications that support industries such as military, space, medical, and even fashion.” From securing government contracts to creating textiles, Shinn does it all.

Over the years, LS4 has partnered with local businesses and nonprofits, both manufacturing products for the market and making this technology accessible to the community. Shinn has even started a smart jewelry business with her 10-year-old daughter.

It’s this fostering of interest in the next generation that Shinn believes will lead to a brighter future. “Their curiosity today will form tomorrow’s innovation. Helping that curiosity and creativity grow is the most rewarding part of my work.”

That’s particularly true, she says, for the next generation of women who will lead the way in the tech sector. She says that women in her position have a responsibility—a challenge—to inspire girls to see themselves taking charge. “That sense of connection, guidance, and shared experience is powerful. It gives you the confidence to take another step forward because it has been done before. When you move toward something that has not been done, you know why you are doing it, for the person behind you. Tell your story, ask questions, connect, and be curious.”

BECKY HILLYARD

From Side Hustle to Style Empire

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

FRESH FACE, ALL DAY

PRO TIPS FOR A SOFTER APPROACH THAT EFFORTLESSLY SHIFTS FROM DAY TO NIGHT.

BY PAULA VM

In her 17 years as a makeup artist, Molly Farris has watched many trends come and go. But lately, the shift she’s noticed has been less about what’s added and more about what’s left out. “People want to look like themselves,” she says. “Just a little more polished.” Here’s her advice on how to get a look that works for all occasions, and is perfectly you.

The first thing to change, she says, is in your skin. Instead of a full-coverage foundation, Farris reaches for a skin tint or skips it altogether, spot-concealing only where needed to even things out while keeping a natural texture. Cream blush, bronzer, and highlighter blend into the skin rather than sit on top of it, helping avoid the dryness that powder can accentuate. A light layer of translucent setting powder—pressed in, not brushed on—keeps everything in place without flattening the finish.

The eyes are next. Heavy shadows and bold colors have taken a back seat to soft neutrals or even nothing at all. For clients who still want definition, Farris uses subtle eyelid contouring rather than obvious color. The result is a look that feels finished, but still familiar.

By evening, the goal isn’t more makeup; it’s a few shifts that add definition. Rather than layering on, a heightened look can be achieved by placing it differently. One of the easiest ways to do that is through the eyes. Tightlining—placing eyeliner between the upper lashes rather than above them—adds depth without taking up lid space. It’s subtle, but evident in the way it frames the face. “It’s always the biggest ‘wow’ factor when I show someone,” she says. “It just makes everything look more defined.”

Lashes are another easy upgrade. While many people avoid them, Farris says that "false lashes are very easy once you get it down!” A simple lash, paired with that tightlined eye, is often enough to carry a daytime look into the evening. What doesn’t change is the overall approach—light layers, natural skin, and nothing that feels overdone. The goal, whether it’s 10 a.m. or 7 p.m., is the same: a face that looks like your own, just slightly more refined for wherever you’re headed next.

MOLLY’S MUST-HAVES

• Start with skincare. Clean, moisturized skin does most of the work and makes everything else look better.

• Daily sunscreen (with one exception). “SPF all day, every day… unless you’re going to be photographed,” she says. Most sunscreens have ingredients that create a “flashback” effect, which can cause a white cast.

• Setting powder. Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder is Molly’s go-to. Press it in with a velour puff for a smooth, natural finish.

• Natural-looking concealer. Tower 28’s concealer blends easily and works well with lighter coverage routines.

• One reliable eye pencil. Makeup Forever’s pencil in the color “Wherever Walnut” is a staple that belongs in everyone’s toolbox.

Core Power Simplified

Local expert Danielle Edwards shares essential mat exercises to transform your posture and power at home.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSI EDISON

If you’ve ever finished a workout feeling more wrecked than refreshed, it might be time to roll out the mat. Pilates has long been the gold standard for building a strong core, improved posture, and long, lean muscle, but its greatest secret is how it leaves you feeling: energized rather than exhausted.

We know that getting to a studio isn't always feasible between work, family, and life in the Texas Hill Country. That’s why we’ve partnered with local expert Danielle Edwards to bring the studio experience directly to your living room. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or a total beginner, these two curated routines prove that you don’t need a room full of expensive reformers to see results.

The beauty of these workouts lies in their simplicity. There are no bulky weights or complicated machines required—all you need is a yoga mat and a bit of floor space. Edwards has designed these movements to be accessible, effective, and perfectly suited for a busy schedule. By focusing on controlled breathing and precise alignment, you’ll discover how a few dedicated minutes at home can transform your physical strength and mental clarity. Ready to find your center? Let's dive in.

The Hundred

This exercise is one of the most wellknown Pilates workouts, and it’s for good reason. “The Hundred” is designed to warm up the body, get your blood flowing, and connect your breath to your movement—all while engaging your core (or what we call the “powerhouse”). It’s also a great way to center your mind and settle into your workout.

1. To get started, lie on your back with your knees bent, legs together, and feet flat on the floor. Let your arms rest long by your sides and take a moment to lengthen your spine.

2. From here, gently curl your head, neck, and shoulders off the mat, bringing your chin toward your chest. At the same time, bring your knees toward your chest and lift your arms so they hover just above your sides. Your core should be doing the work here, not your neck.

3. Once you’re in position, begin pumping your arms up and down a few inches while keeping them straight and energized. Inhale for a count of five, then exhale for a count of five. The breath should be steady and intentional, matching the rhythm of your arms.

4. You’ll repeat this breathing pattern for a total of 10 full breaths, which should equal 100 arm pumps (hence the name!).

5. As you get stronger, you can increase the challenge by extending your legs out straight or lifting them off the mat. Just be sure you can still keep your core engaged, your spine imprinted, and your lower ribs into the floor.

One Leg Circle

The One-Leg Circle is a classic Pilates move that looks deceptively simple but is actually a masterclass in pelvic stability and hip mobility. While one leg draws a circle in the air, the true work is happening in the stationary part of your body. Your abdominal muscles must engage deeply to keep your hips from rocking, teaching your body how to maintain a strong, quiet center even when your limbs are in motion. It is a fantastic way to stretch the hamstrings and hips while simultaneously challenging your core's ability to "anchor" your entire frame against gravity.

1. Start by lying on your back with both legs long on the mat and your arms resting by your sides. Take a second to settle in and find length through your spine.

2. Lift one leg up toward the ceiling, keeping it as straight as you comfortably can. The other leg should stay long and grounded—think of it as your anchor. Flex your anchor foot at the ankle for stability.

“The beauty of these workouts lies in their simplicity. There are no bulky weights or complicated machines required—all you need is a yoga mat and a bit of floor space.”

3. From here, start to draw small circles on the ceiling with your lifted leg. Cross slightly over your body, circle it down, around, and back to center. Sounds easy, right? The challenge is keeping your hips completely still while the leg moves.

4. Your core (your “powerhouse”) is working behind the scenes to keep everything stable. If your hips start rocking, just make the circle smaller. This isn’t about how big you go, but how controlled you stay.

5. Breathe naturally as you complete five to eight circles in one direction, then reverse it for another five to eight circles. It’s a great reminder that in Pilates, sometimes the smallest movements are doing the most work.

INVESTING IN THE Power of Women

DISCOVER THE LOCAL PROGRAM EMPOWERING WOMEN TO COMMAND THEIR FINANCIAL FUTURES.

Navigating the financial landscape can be difficult for anyone. But add in the way women are often excluded or ignored, and it can be truly daunting for 50% of us. The Women’s Initiative at Sendero is changing that by creating a dedicated space for women to master their financial futures. Founded by Partner and CEO Elizabeth Flavin Crawford, the program moves beyond traditional jargon to offer community-driven education and support for every life stage. We spoke with Crawford to discuss how she is breaking barriers and helping women in our community turn financial instinct into lasting power.

sendero.com/the-womens-initiative 210-739-1818 | 1580 S. Main St., Ste. 203

(Responses edited for length and clarity.)

The Women’s Initiative is described as a platform where women can freely talk about and understand their personal finances. Can you tell us how it came to be? What was the spark or need you saw in the community that led you to create a dedicated program specifically for women? In my career, I saw male advisors ignore the women in the room, even when the money belonged to the woman. They would say hello to her, but then the entire conversation was directed to the man. It was a shock to experience and a turning point for me. I knew there had to be a better way.

Women's financial lives can look really different: a young professional, a stayat-home mom, a recently divorced woman, or a widow navigating finances for the first time. How does the Women's Initiative meet women wherever they are in life, rather than offering a one-sizefits-all approach?

Women are half the population; we aren’t a niche. The Women's Initiative is about creating a space where every woman feels welcomed, regardless of where she is in life. Our events are designed by women for women to learn, connect, bring a friend, and genuinely enjoy themselves.

Let’s talk about "Let's Talk.” What does a typical event look like, and how do you move away from “dull education” to create an environment where women feel empowered and engaged?

We don’t do dull! Think six to ten women gathered in someone's home with wine and appetizers, diving into real financial conversations without the jargon—because the concepts we use in finance are those that women already apply in their daily lives, just under different names. The moment a woman realizes she already understands this more than she thought, the confidence that follows is extraordinary.

“You already have more financial instinct than you’ve given yourself credit for.
We’re just here to help you trust it.”

Financial literacy is a part of the program, but there are elements of psychology, communication, and action items. It is incredibly rewarding for me to see the confidence that women gain through this program.

It seems that financial confidence is a recurring theme throughout this initiative. In working with women clients, what are the most common barriers—practical, social, or otherwise—that might keep women from feeling truly in control of their financial lives?

Years ago, I came across a meme about applying for jobs that I haven't been able to shake. It said a man with three out of ten qualifications applies confidently, while a woman with eight still wonders if she's enough. I've watched that play out with women in my work ever since. As women, we easily fall into the traps of over-planning and under-executing, playing it too safe with investments, and giving to everyone else before saving for ourselves. Plus, we live longer than men while still earning less, which makes getting this right not just important, but urgent.

For a woman in the area who's reading this and thinking, "this sounds like something I need," what's the first step? What is the one thing you want her to know about her own financial power?

The hardest part is simply beginning—and you don't have to figure out where to start alone. Scan the QR code in our ad, visit our website, find us on social media, or come to an event and bring a friend. You already have more financial instinct than you've given yourself credit for. We're just here to help you trust it.

Surrounding yourself with the right people plays a powerful role in that well-being. Close friends who uplift, encourage, and ground you can help restore emotional balance, reignite joy, and strengthen the sense of connection that many of us lose in the rush of daily life. From the first planning call to the final sunset, they crafted a retreat that nourished the mind, body, and spirit. Newman-Dailey’s service is designed to reduce stress, create intentional experiences, and curate moments that

“WHOLE WELLNESS STARTS WITH THE CHOICE TO PRIORITIZE YOURSELF AND SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO ELEVATE YOUR LIFE.”

help you and your friends reconnect, replenish, and realign. As the foundation of our retreat, we called their turnkey rental, “Blessings by the Beach,” home during our trip. Designed with comfort and ease in mind, this house creates the ideal space for rest, reflection, and rejuvenation. It’s where mornings began peacefully, laughter echoed through shared spaces, and the simple act of slowing down became a gift in itself.

Newman-Dailey’s connections within the Destin community elevated every aspect of our stay. One of our most enriching experiences was the culinary mastery of personal chef David Cunningham of Cinders & Salt Chefs. Sharing a fresh, thoughtfully prepared meal with friends isn’t just delicious; it’s a form of relational and nutritional wellness, bringing everyone together in a way that feels grounding and joyful.

We also enjoyed an incredible dinner cruise aboard SunQuest Cruises’ newest vessel, Sol y Luna . The breathtaking views and gentle ocean breezes set the tone for meaningful conversations and moments of pure calm. These serene experiences helped quiet the mind and allowed us to be fully present with the people who matter most.

Spending our evenings at The Edge Seafood Restaurant & Skybar added a playful layer of connection. With stunning waterfront dining and a lively yet relaxing atmosphere, it was the perfect place to unwind, celebrate friendship, and savor the coastal lifestyle. During our dinner, there was live music and incredible customer service from the staff. We loved taking in the gorgeous scenery of Destin Harbor at sunset while we savored craft cocktails and delectable dishes, including their signature “Southern Mussels.”

Whole wellness starts with the choice to prioritize yourself and surround yourself with people who elevate your life. With Newman-Dailey guiding the journey, a Destin retreat becomes a meaningful, restorative experience—one that nurtures relationships, renews your spirit, and brings you back to center.

SHARING FOOD FROM HEART TO TABLE

THE FLAVORS YOU KNOW AND LOVE, NOW WITH A FRONT DOOR.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Shelby Hayward is no stranger to Boerne Lifestyle readers. In these pages, she’s known as much for her vibrant recipes as for her heart for the community. Many of our readers remember her tireless efforts to provide meals to residents, first responders, and volunteers after last year’s July 4th flooding as a testament to her "people-first" philosophy. Now, the founder of Shelby’s Dae-ly Meals is embarking on a new chapter with the opening of her brickand-mortar cafe in Comfort.

What began more than a decade ago as a personal mission to help loved ones live healthfully has blossomed into a beloved local staple. Driven by a passion for nutrition and the belief that eating well shouldn’t be a struggle, Hayward has built a business rooted in care and connection. We asked her to share the journey that led from her home kitchen to this new gathering space.

This business was never part of a grand plan. It was built from love, necessity, and a desire to help the people closest to me feel better.

Over 11 years ago, I found myself in the kitchen, not as a business owner, but as a daughter, a friend, and someone who simply wanted to make a difference. My mom and other family and friends were trying to navigate their health journeys, and I could see how overwhelming it all felt. The questions, the restrictions, the exhaustion. It turned something as simple as eating into a daily struggle. I remember thinking, “It shouldn’t be this hard to take care of yourself.”

So I started small. I cooked meals that felt nourishing but still comforting. I prepped food to make their days easier. I devoured every book I could find about nutrition, teaching myself what truly fuels our bodies, so that every meal plan I created never felt like a diet. I wanted them to feel like life was easier,

healthier, and more delicious. And somewhere in those quiet moments in the kitchen, something shifted. It really felt like what I was doing mattered.

Word spread, as it naturally does when something comes from a real place. Friends told friends, families reached out, and before I knew it, what started as helping a few people turned into something I could no longer ignore. It had a purpose beyond my inner circle.

But even as it grew into meal prep, catering, and eventually a café, I held onto the feeling that started it all. Because for me, this has never just been about food. It’s about the mom who doesn’t have time to cook but still wants to feed her family well. It’s about the person trying to take control of their health but not knowing where to start. It’s about creating a space—whether that’s through a meal or a place to gather—where people feel cared for, supported, and understood.

I know what it’s like to want better for the people you love. That’s where this all began. And more than 11 years later, that’s still why I do it.

The GOLDEN PEAR

Experience the gilded fusion of almond and orchard fruit, where exquisite seasonal mixology meets Boerne’s warmth.

Twelve to Twelve may be a “speakeasy,” but it isn’t trying to be a relic of 1933. Rather, co-founder Patricio Peñalosa brings a bar he believes is just right for Boerne today. "The speakeasy vibe is that the lights are dim and the place is not very easy to find," Peñalosa says. "We try to be very respectful of the mood and look and feel of Boerne."

The inspiration for the concept travels north from Mexico City, a global epicenter for avant-garde libations. Peñalosa, a 34-year industry veteran, has partnered with the talented mixologist Leo Zavala to bring that high-caliber cocktail culture to the Hill Country. For this team, quality is non-negotiable. Whether it’s a house original like the “Golden Pear” or a classic like a chocolate martini, the ingredients are curated with a chef’s precision. "It’s like cooking," Peñalosa explains. "You don’t just run to Walmart to get the Hershey's chocolate. You want the best quality products in your cocktails."

To accompany the elevated menu, the goal is genuine hospitality rather than exclusivity. Guests are immediately greeted with water and snacks—a small but intentional nod to old-school service. "The first thing that we do is make people feel welcome, that we were waiting for them."
