Love Is Our Lifestyle February is a time of love. For many, it means special gifts or a night out with the most important person in your life. It can mean romantic dinners, fancy chocolates, and bouquets of beautiful flowers. But it can also mean intentional conversations, cuddling up to watch a movie, or heartfelt letters sharing your hopes and dreams. It may not even mean a significant other... perhaps it’s your children, family, or friends. At its best, I think February is a time for us to pause and appreciate the people who love us well. Of course, many parts of our lives are marked by love — not just relationships — so we’ve composed this “Love Local” issue to capture many of them. Some couples take their love to work every day (“Mixing Business and Marriage,” p. 66). Get to know them and discover how they’ve learned to be successful in their businesses and in their lives together. Love is on full display inside a local dance studio (“Dance Love,” p. 30), where a passion for the art comes alive in the dedication and mastery of the dancers and in their mentor’s commitment to seeing them flourish. You can also see love in the work of three local painters (“Local Love on Canvas,” p. 36) who put their hearts and souls into each canvas they touch. Finally, things get very personal for me in this issue. My wife and I celebrate our first anniversary this month, so we invite you to come along and reminisce with us as we share the story of our creative, intimate, and joy-filled wedding in West Texas (“First Date to Forever,” p. 48). It was a long journey for us, but we’re excited to bring it home to you. However you celebrate love this month, we hope it’s beautiful, full of meaning, and sets your heart aglow. And hey, let’s not wait for February to tell and show the people in our lives how much we appreciate and love them, ok? Let’s make love our lifestyle all year long. With love,

If you're looking for a romantic place to take your spouse or partner to eat where the food is made with care, love, and consistency, you won't find a better option than Beefsteak Kitchen + Bar. Located on the I-10 frontage road just one mile before Fair Oaks Parkway, long-time collaborators Eric Bryla and Chef Matt Cavin deliver much more than a run-of-the-mill meal. Eric and Matt are committed to ensuring everyone who walks through their doors feels like they've come home to a comfortable, inviting, and delicious dining experience. "We saw an opportunity to bring high-quality food and our passion to the Boerne community," explains Chef Matt Cavin. Partner Eric Bryla quickly adds, "We're a place for anybody that likes to eat." While they share a culinary vision today, they landed on it from journeys that could not be more different. Chef Cavin started his cooking adventure with a job at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort. But it was an inauspicious beginning. "I was told not to cook," Cavin remembers. But he wasn't ready to give up. "I also worked as a cook at Luby's, where I learned the value of hard work. After that, I went on to work at Benihana's." Bryla jumps in with a chuckle, "Matt still has some of those knife skills." Chef Cavin jumped from job to job while attending St. Philip's College in San Antonio before hitting a financial roadblock that forced him to withdraw. Unsure of what to do next, he contemplated joining the Marine Corps but enlisted in the U.S. Navy instead. Cavin's decision to join the Navy was entirely circumstantial. "I went to

the recruiting office on a Sunday, and the Navy was the only one open." After boot camp, he was placed in the Navy's culinary program as part of its Task Force EXCEL (Excellence through Education and Learning). Cavin trained at the Culinary Institute of America in New York through the EXCEL program. While at sea, he rose to become an Admiral's cook. A native of Fredericksburg, Bryla has owned restaurants since 2003. "My first job was as a busboy when I was 14," Bryla recalls. "Eventually, I went to college and opened my first restaurant in Fredericksburg," and it was in Fredericksburg that Bryla and Cavin enjoyed their first collaboration. "Matt was living in Fredericksburg when I opened Burger Burger," Bryla explains. "I hired him, and he developed our menu before moving back to Boerne." Cavin's move would not be the end of their work together, and their chemistry is apparent. Fredericksburg's loss is, without any doubt, Boerne's gain. So, what can you expect when you eat at Beefsteak? When you first walk in, the experience begins with the casual, upscale, Southern steakhouse feel. But be prepared to enjoy one of the best dining experiences you'll ever have. That's precisely what Bryla and Cavin want for every one of their guests. Even though they've only been open for less than six months, Beefsteak is quickly earning high marks as one of the top dining establishments in the area. responds when asked why Beefsteak has gained its foothold so quickly. Chef Cavin chimes in, "From the first cocktail to the bite of your meal, we're proud of what we put out." While the restaurant industry is known for shortlived ventures, Eric Brylan and Matt Cavin are in it for the long haul with Beefsteak. Asked where they see their restaurant five years down the road, each one responds with confidence. "We'll continue to put out good, quality food," Bryla answers, "and keep seeing customers coming back again and again."

Cavin also has a dream for Beefsteak that goes beyond serving food. "I want us to be a huge part of the community," he said. But echoing Bryla's commitment to repeat business, he quickly adds, "I want people to want to come to Beefsteak all of the time." The commitment to what they do is clear. Says Chef Cavin, "We go the extra mile for our guests and hope that comes through in our service and our flavors." The world of dance is one of passion. The jumps. The twirls. The lifts. Everything about it says “love.” Enter into this enchanting realm Ronda Runnels — the visionary force directing Human | Artist | Dancer who has devoted her life to igniting the passion of young dancers. Runnels’ journey into dance began at age three, driven by an unwavering passion that defied financial hurdles. Reflecting on her childhood, she shares, "I started dancing when I was three years old because most moms want their kids to dance, and fell in love with it." At 11, a pivotal scholarship for a ballet program in San Antonio marked the birth of her commitment to dance. "I took away a great value of the gift of a scholarship and felt that someday I would want to be able to offer that privilege and that honor to dancers like myself." CONTINUED >

From this passion, Human | Artist | Dancer emerged out of Trilogy Dance Center and Trilogy Hill Country to provide scholarships for high school dancers. In its inaugural year, two $5,000 scholarships spurred recipients toward dance careers. Subsequent years witnessed increased amounts, aiding college education and elite training. Runnels proudly shares, "Our second year we gave away $14,000 in scholarships and both of those students used the income to go to school." Beyond performance, Runnels’ devotion lies in mentorship and education. Trilogy Dance Center has become a haven, nurturing

creativity and authenticity. “I feel like it's a gift to have a program where you're being held accountable, where a person wants you to show up and wants you to be the best expression of yourself.” Human | Artist | Dancer not only supports financially but also instills vital life skills. Runnels emphasizes resilience and coping with rejection, saying "I tell them you have five minutes to be disappointed. Cry it out, let it go, and then wipe the tears and get back in the game." Supporting Human | Artist | Dancer becomes a community performance. Through donations, sponsorships, or attending

Riki Yarbrough @rikiyarbrough | rikiyarbrough.com Riki Yarbrough knows what it means to master all mediums — the physical and the digital. Yarbrough completed a general art degree in college and pursued a career in graphic design afterward, which she has done freelance for over 25 years. Yarbrough has also been creating and selling her physical art for almost a decade where she enjoys melding traditional painting with elements such as typography. “I’m giddy over type,” said Yarbrough. After participating in a collaborative art journal about a decade ago, Yarbrough discovered her love for using many kinds of media in her work including paint, pastel, and charcoal. Yarbrough says a common theme within her work is perseverance and finding beauty in the pieces of the world that are typically thought of as tough, such as a resilient cactus in the high desert, a location she frequently finds herself returning to paint. You can see Yarbrough’s art for yourself at Gallery 195 in downtown Boerne as well as on her website.

Amy Higgins @amy_higgins_art “I love that art gives me the flexibility to do things that are whimsical,” said Fair Oaks Ranch-based artist Amy Higgins, who specializes in oil painting and personalized watercolor illustrations for invitations and stationery. Higgins said she has always noticed shadows and shapes since she was a child when she went on to win prizes in the Houston Rodeo Art competition in high school. Although she became a teacher after college, Higgins always continued pursuing her painting. Higgins regularly paints bold and whimsical animals; in fact, Higgins painted a bold, funky painting of a group of goats that sits proudly in her home. However, Higgins elaborated that these goats actually represent her family. Rather than focusing on photorealism, Higgins said, “I just like things that are a little different, things that are a little weird.” CONTINUED >

Rhonda Bell @rhonda.bell.studio | artworkarchive.com/profile/rhondabell-studio Fine artist Rhonda Bell says that she has always been an artist even since she was a child. Bell was taught and inspired by both of her grandmothers — one who taught her to sew, and the other who curated beautiful items through thrift shopping. This, Bell said, inspired her to “find beauty in ordinary things.” She carried that love from her earliest years, and the rest has been her history. Bell has done many kinds of art, but for the past 20 years, she has focused on acrylic and oil painting inspired by the Texas Hill Country and the beauty of everyday events and objects. “Even common things such as a teacup,” said Bell. Bell does commission work and sells her art online and in person at Fiddlin Frogs in Comfort.

The McNay has been a staple of the San Antonio art scene since 1954 when it opened as the first modern art museum in Texas. The museum was created by Marion Koogler McNay, turning her Spanish-style mansion into a home for her collection and special exhibits. Even the beautiful grounds — landscaped with fountains, broad lawns, a Japanese-inspired garden, and a fish pond — feature pieces that are sure to impress. McNay was an American painter and art teacher who inherited a substantial oil fortune and built the home in 1927. Upon her death, the house was bequeathed to the City of San Antonio to house the museum and serve as an oasis in the heart of San Antonio. “Do you want to go camping with me?” It was the summer of 2020, and the friend I had a crush on just asked me to go on an adventure with her. It was early in the pandemic, and here was an opportunity to get away for a few days to a place I’d never been with a person I thought was fascinating and very cute. So obviously, I said “yes.” And just like that, our first date turned into a five-day trek through the wild and breathtaking

grandeur of Big Bend National Park, the quirkiness and charm of Marfa, and even the quiet beauty of downtown San Antonio (I said it was the pandemic summer, remember?). We still love looking back on that journey and sharing some of the funny, sweet, and even perilous stories from that trip. And while we may have felt the possibility then, we certainly didn’t know that that trip would be the first of many adventures Taryn and I would have together. CONTINUED >

A wedding is a wonderful opportunity to forge intentional connections, with the couple and between the guests themselves. We thought about how our location, dinner, and activities could help bring our guests together.

• Choose a venue that is a part of the couple’s story. It may be a place the couple has fond memories of or a location they hold dear. • Incorporate food and drinks that

Fast forward a few years to when we’re engaged and planning a wedding. We knew we didn’t want a big event, but we wanted it to reflect who we are: casual but elegant, creative but familiar, and full of meaning. After touring one venue that was beautiful but not for us, we talked through things on the way home. Taryn asked, “If we had all the time and money in the world, what would we want to do for our wedding?” I paused, trying to find the words for thoughts that were already swirling in my mind. “I’d want to take everyone on our first date,” I finally replied. Taryn smiled big like she does, and we knew we had found our answer. We do not, in fact, have all the time and money in the world, so our goal became to figure out how we could recreate and recapture some of the magic we had experienced on our first adventure in West Texas and share it with the people we love. We set our sights on Marfa as our destination. The town is tiny but established enough to offer a selection of venues and accommodations for our event with 30 people. It’s got history and a unique artsy vibe we love, and many of our guests would be visiting for the first time. Taryn already followed a lot of the hotels and art galleries on social media, and it wasn’t long before we realized Bohemio would be the place where we would get married. We loved its bespoke desert motif, and it had a garden for the ceremony, a patio for the reception, and a living room we could use as our dance floor — along with accommodations for my family. With the date set and venue booked, we found a caterer in (relatively) nearby Alpine who seemed like a good fit. Roux Alpine specializes in locally-sourced, seasonal cuisine that is elevated, delicious, and pairs well with the desert air. Guests could stay at a variety of hotels and short-term rentals, from the modern and posh Hotel St. George to the historic Hotel Paisano (Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean stayed there while filming Giant) to the hipster boutique, The Lincoln.

When the big day finally arrived, guests gathered in the garden for the ceremony. Our photographer captured the setting and our excitement perfectly during our first look and family photos. On the tables, the vintage candlesticks and flowers still looked great and were only slightly disheveled after the drive from San Antonio. Taryn’s bouquet had made the journey in fine shape. Thinking back, my favorite part of the ambiance was the sound of the papel picado strung through the trellis as it rustled in the gentle West Texas breeze. Taryn walked out to a cherished song as our celebrant — a dear friend and the reason Taryn and I originally met — and I waited at the altar. I had a lot of feelings in that moment: gratefulness, peace, joy. If I’m being honest though, our officiant cried more than either of us, but his tender tears of joy (and the blaring horn of a passing train at one point) only added to the unforgettableness of the moment. After the kiss and the ceremony concluded, we offered our guests cocktails, wine (both the

spirits and wine were selected for our memories with them), and beer custom-brewed by a friend for the occasion. We also introduced them to each other by pairing a favorite photo of each guest with a connection and conversation starter for another guest. Dinner ended, and for our first dance, I had surreptitiously planned for confetti canons to go off at the climax of our song. The surprise and joy on Taryn’s face was even better than I hoped it would be. We all gathered for a “farewell” photo at the end of the night, with sparklers and loved ones surrounding us in celebration. I say “farewell” because the party didn’t end. We all loaded up and drove the few miles out of town for an after-party at the Marfa Lights Viewing Area to bask in the mystery and spectacle that is the West Texas sky. Our wedding turned out — not perfectly — but exactly how we hoped. After all, a wedding is a celebration of the love two people share with people they love in a place that encapsulates it all.

Staying Afloat Teaching Kids to Be Safe Teaches Them to Love Swimming

Shiloh Korom has been swimming her whole life. After relocating to Texas from California in 2016, she opened Vista Swim Academy last year to teach kids how to love swimming too. Back on the West Coast, Korom worked with a multi-location swim school for over seven years. When she moved to Texas, she began teaching kids to swim on her own out of backyard pools in Helotes. “It went from four to five families to 20, and it just kept getting bigger and bigger,” said Korom. “It was then that I realized that there was a need for quality lessons and consistent structures in a loving environment.” Korom began searching for Vista Swim’s permanent home in 2019,

Korom says kids must learn to be “water safe,” which includes knowing how to swim well. “My grandmother had us in swim lessons from a very young age,” Korom recalled, adding that her parents required that she introduce herself to the lifeguards wherever she went for a swim. But water safety isn’t limited to only swim lessons, she stresses. It also means always having active adult supervision when kids are in the water. “If people have a pool, I really like to preach to make sure that CONTINUED >

and she is happy to have found a fitting place for her swim school in Boerne. Now, she has her sights set on ensuring water safety and confidence in both kids and their parents. “It was instilled in me from a young age that a lot of things can happen that you can’t control, but if we can make you water-safe, that’s what we’re going to do.”

Baron & Shan Wiley Boerne Radio 103.9FM | boerneradio.com The gateway to great music makes its home on Main Street with Baron and Shan Wiley at the helm. Operating out of their studio in the Richter Building, they’ve spent the last three years bringing the greatest hits in rock and country music to the Boerne airwaves. Baron is a 2023 inductee into the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame. His industry experience spans more than 30 years, including positions both on the air and behind the scenes. Still, Shan saw an opportunity to help her husband. “He was underwater. Just couldn’t get everything done. So I said, ‘Ok, hand it over.’” She left her executive director position at the nonprofit Any Woman Can to join Baron’s side. “This is his dream come true,” she says. Over their 23-year marriage, the couple has raised two daughters and found happiness working sideby-side. “The challenge is that radio is 24/7,” Baron says. “A lot of times, I’m working at night while she’s in the next room. But we try to make that time up. We’ll go have dinner. I still date her.” “You just need to have a great solid base and friendship to make it work,” Shan explains. “Communication,” Baron chimes in. “And we just like each other. Specializing in designing and building unique structures, remodels, summer kitchens, commercial build-outs, and more, Micah and wife Michele’s goals are to bring their customers’ dreams to life. The couple married in 1993 and spent 11 years working in the oil and gas industry, although not together. But after hearing a message in church one day, Micah decided it was time to follow his heart into entrepreneurship. When Michele’s work dynamic changed in 2006, she decided to join her husband. Though she never intended to work in the business full-time, she now manages the administrative side while Micah oversees projects. They agree it takes both their roles to bring the balance that makes their company a success. Challenges can arise when much of the time spent together centers around work, but the Morgans enjoy the flexibility of the business and take spur-of-the-moment getaways whenever they can. As for the future, the couple plans to hand the business off to their son and enjoy retirement, traveling and spending time with their grandchildren.

Courtney & Ronald Daigle JordyLolo Events, JLE Studio | thejlestudio.com For college sweethearts Ronald and Courtney Daigle, the COVID pandemic was a time of inspiration. In a creative effort to entertain their two young daughters, Courtney began decorating the house in themes and posting photos online. The positive response was overwhelming and pushed the couple into starting their own company. It wasn’t long before the growth of the business presented its first challenge. “We needed a place to create,” Courtney explains. “We found an awesome warehouse space in Boerne – we call it a creative studio. That’s how JLE Studios came about.” Courtney says it was their need to have a fun, creative outlet that has led to the success of the businesses. Both she and Ronald serve in the Air Force and Civil Service, respectively. Though balancing marriage, careers, and two businesses with small kids underfoot can be difficult, they take every opportunity to spend quality time together. “We have a babysitter when we’re doing an event, so we’ll take advantage once we’re done working and go out to eat or do something together,” says Courtney. In the future, the couple would love to have a wedding venue, but for now, their focus is to get to know the Boerne community. CONTINUED >

Mary & William Holt Holt & Holt Funeral Home | holtfh.com 50 years ago, William and Mary were two kids growing up in the same New Orleans neighborhood. Little did they know this childhood friendship would blossom into happily ever after. “I think I first had a crush on my wife in high school,” William says. “Now I get to do life with my best friend.” It was within their 33 years of marriage that William first got the idea of working in the funeral business. “We were watching a show about mortuary school,” explains Mary. “I was just being goofy and I said, ‘I bet you’d be good at that.’ Next thing I knew, he was enrolled!” For several years, Mary helped while maintaining her career as vice president of an accounting firm, but she came on full-time after the couple purchased their Boerne location in 2017. “There’s nothing I cherish more than the life and love I share with my wife,” says William. “I wouldn’t be where I am if not for Mary.” Mary gives all the credit to William, acknowledging that while the work they do is serious, he has a compassionate gift. But William has his own reasons why it all works. “I always give Mary top billing, so she’s the first ‘Holt’ in ‘Holt & Holt Funeral Home.’”

Debbie & Greg Moats BlindsNMotion | blindsnmotion.com Nothing says “falling in love” like getting engaged three days after a first date and married three months later. That’s exactly what Greg and Debbie Moats did nearly 26 years ago. “I met him through my dog groomer,” Debbie laughs. “He kept asking me out and I wouldn’t go. Finally, I said ‘yes’ and we were inseparable.” Debbie began her small drapery business in 1993 as a single mom working on the floor of her living room. After she and Greg married, he joined the business full-time after their youngest left for the Marines. He brought in the manufacturing, including customization, motorization, and automation. “You have to learn how to play off each other’s strengths,” says Greg. “She makes it look pretty, I make it function.” They agree the biggest challenge is having a personal life that doesn’t center around work talk at the dinner table. To keep the balance, they travel. “We’re going on a Mediterranean cruise,” Debbie says. “The reason we like cruises is because there’s less access to phones and emails. We can truly disconnect for a brief time.” The couple is looking forward to expanding in the future, including manufacturing new product lines and purchasing a bigger building. “We’re not here for the money,” Greg says. “We’re here to make people’s lives better with what we provide.”
