I am a romantic at heart. My first memorable valentine was from 7th grade when a childhood friend created and delivered a 3-foot-tall valentine card to me with one red rose. There is something special about another person taking the time to share an expression of fondness, love, or appreciation. How you choose to celebrate may be as simple as a homemade valentine or elaborate as a handcrafted jewel. Regardless of how you celebrate Valentine’s Day, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will be a guide to make sure those around you know they are loved, just as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in our local community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. You don’t have to wait for Valentine’s Day to grab a coffee at the Spotted Deer or Black Rifle and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Richter Cork and Keg and some cheese from H-E-B and indulge on a movie night. This month you will meet many local and inspirational artisans. If you are lucky enough to be the recipient of a hand-crafted jewel by Gary Wick, know that the love and care that went into the unique treasure are tremendous. Boerne and the surrounding area boast of numerous accomplished artists in the visual, literary and performing arenas of the gifted and creative. Boerne Lifestyle, in this article, features some artists whose crafts may be new to our readers. Michelle, a wife and mother, has always loved creating and is inspired by Saint John Paul II’s letter to artists. In it, he describes an artistic vocation as a service of beauty. Creativity combined with faith has led to a special mission of making handmade goods that help others encounter God in daily life. By sharing her gifts, Michelle hopes to encourage her customers to grow in faith. Stacey lives in Boerne with her husband of 26 years and is the mother of two amazing humans. She started Sola & Stem Wood Florals in November 2020. Husband Frank encouraged Stacey to start a business and sell her creations, mainly because he was tired of living in a flower jungle. Skeptical at first, she started selling at small markets and was overwhelmed with the reaction to her flowers. She makes arrangements for special events and home decor. These make beautiful gifts. Patsy’s artwork is best described in one word: whimsical! She graduated with a B.S. degree in Medical Technology. After working and raising two sons, she accepted a job as Flight Attendant with American Airlines where she met her husband, Ron, also in aviation. After retiring, they moved to Ruidoso where Patsy soon signed up to take a pottery class and instantly fell in love with sculpting clay. She took workshops in Santa Fe, Roswell, and Sedona. Her work sometimes sold faster than she could replace it. After 22 years, the Native Texans moved back and now enjoy life in Kerrville.

ART DOLLS
I work with Sola Wood flowers creating arrangements and home decor. Sola Wood flowers are an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to cut flowers. They are made from the root of the Shola or Cassava plant and can be painted and dyed to match any color. I have been a crafter all my life and have dabbled in many things. Once I started working with these fun flowers, I fell in love. I’m a clinical pharmacist and found that working with the Sola Wood flowers was such a great stress reliever, especially needed during the pandemic. I love to hear that people who are allergic to “real” flowers get excited that these flowers can be a part of their household.
I spend many hours in my studio, sculpting and adorning my whimsical figures. My sculpted work such as the Indian princesses are decorated with flowers, birds, baskets and butterflies and are all one-of-a-kind. My utilitarian bowls are covered with roses and decorative scrolls. The flower pots depicting women are my favorites to make since I enjoy gardening. Also, the garden totems feature many bright colors and they can remain outdoors all year long. Someone recently commissioned me to make donkeys so I sculpted precious, funny and one-of-a-kind little donkeys for them. I like putting a smile on the face of my customers and all who see my sculptures.

The Ranch is an easy drive to downtown Fredericksburg, just ten minutes away. “It was a nice country drive with open land and the Ranch nestled among trees with a panoramic view. From the comfort of the living room sofa or in the quiet, soothing country air on the spacious deck, the views were spectacular! The space was very well-appointed, even with extra Keurig coffee cups. Hot tub stargazing was a treat! The cabins reflect the care and attention of owner Lisa Rogers who carefully appointed and designed each interior. All the cabin designs are elevated, with a Hill Country cabin feel on the outside. The owners ensure the tranquility of space by limiting the number of guests and children.” The Rogers purchased the 53 acres of Jumping Goat Ranch, and built five houses and a barn. They moved

there full-time last Summer. The majority of guests come from larger cities like Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin. You must try the authentic German cuisine restaurants along Main Street. Jumping Goat Ranch can be a home base for your Valentine's Day weekend or spending a romantic weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the "real world". From wineries to tasting rooms to vineyards, the area in and around Fredericksburg has a wealth of beautiful scenery and fabulous wines of all kinds. The Texas Wine Trail map features over 50 unique and visually stunning wineries scattered throughout the Hill Country, from Austin to Fredericksburg and Lampasas to New Braunfels. Boerne author Jolene Navarro is a seventh-generation Texan and Publisher’s Weekly bestselling author. Her life, much like her stories, is filled with faith, family, laughter, and all of life’s wonderful messiness. As much as the world changes, people stay the same. Good and evil. Vow-keepers and heartbreakers. Jolene married a vow-keeper who shows her that dancing in the rain never gets old. Growing up between Boerne and Leakey makes writing about the Hill Country as natural as breathing. But the writing itself didn’t come easy. In college, she discovered dysgraphia was the reason spelling and grammar were a challenge for her, but the words and stories would not leave her alone. So, at forty she chose to pursue a dream of writing a book. Four years later her agent had sold her first book to Harlequin’s Love Inspired line. Lone Star Holiday was released in 2013. Gary Wick, RedTree Jewelry UTILIZING THE BUSINESS AS A FOUNDATION FOR PHILANTHROPY AND SERVING THE COMMUNITY Growing up in Wisconsin, Gary Wick had some unique interests: pirates and rocks. “My mom was a rock hound and I loved minerals. I also loved pirate movies, stories of buried treasure and Indiana Jones,” Gary remembers. Little did he know that these boyhood interests would lead him to his lifelong passion and pursuit as an expert craftsman and custom jeweler. Gary’s first after-school job was with a local jeweler. “He was a third-generation jeweler. I went in one day and asked for a job. I told him I didn’t need money, I just wanted to learn how to do this stuff. I put in a lot of hours and got to learn from one of the best.” Gary is the founder and co-owner of RedTree Jewelry, a true craftsman and philanthropist. He and a few other craftsmen create hand-crafted artisan custom jewelry in their primary workshop in Boerne. They also opened a storefront in Leon Springs three years ago. “Creating unique custom pieces allows us to use the best materials

possible,” Gary explains. “We can do that where the mass manufacturers can’t. We try to combine the best quality and service. We’re not salespeople, we’re craftsmen.” Gary’s commitment to quality is not RedTree’s only distinction. He is just as committed to utilizing the business as a foundation for philanthropy and serving his community. “More than anything, we want to use our God-given skills to make a positive impact on people’s lives,” Gary says. This commitment started early in RedTree’s existence when Gary learned of a three-year-old girl suffering from brain tumors. A friend invited him to create a custom piece of jewelry for a silent auction designed to raise funds for an experimental treatment. “When I made and delivered this piece to the girl and her family, their faces just lit up,” Gary remembers. “It was a really profound moment for me. I saw the cause and effect of making the piece, how it created conversations and ended up becoming a part of her healing story.” The unique piece created for this girl – a combination of three hearts – turned into the Trinity Series, RedTree’s first product line committed to raising funds for families in need. Now called the Heart Angel, the design is sold with a portion of the proceeds going to the local Ronald McDonald House. Since then, RedTree has created custom pieces to help support other local charities and causes like Guardian House and the Lone Star Parkinson Society. “Some day,” he says, “we would like every piece to support a good cause in some way, shape or form.” Recently Gary went back to his boyhood love of pirates to create a Shipwreck line. “It is fun and whimsical. I even got to replicate a 17th-century doubloon.” In a way, his story has come full circle. “I loved rocks and I loved treasure. I used to want to find buried treasure. But now, I literally get to make treasure!”

Our nature-inspired goat's milk soaps are handmade right in our Hill Country kitchen. We use the fresh milk from our Nubian goats that graze freely on our farm in Boerne. During a season of much loss in 2010, my husband Jeremy and I moved to Texas with our four sons. We bought six acres with a grade-A goat dairy barn on it and soon purchased our first Nubian dairy goats. We had researched all the wonderful healing properties of goat's milk both for the body and for the skin.

Soap-making became a therapeutic way for me to work through multiple layers of grief including: the late miscarriage of our fifth son, the death of my mother-in-law, and a move far away from close friends and family. The creative process was an act of faith in believing life would come from death and beauty from ashes. In 2014, after many prayers, I gave birth to a little girl named Lucy Elizabeth. She was named after her grandmother, who on her deathbed, told me she hoped I would have a little girl of my own someday. God's timing was perfect and the baby was due on her Grandma Lucy's birthday. 'Lucy' means 'bringer of light'. It was truly the dawning of a new day and God's promise of restoration and new life was fulfilled. Each bar of soap is made with much love and many prayers nurturing hope for all who use them. These gentle soaps and lotions are made with the most natural of ingredients. Wonderful for cleansing and nourishing even the most sensitive skin, especially for those who suffer from acne and eczema. Goat's milk contains many vitamins, minerals, and natural alpha-hydroxy acids, making it an excellent skincare ingredient. Our soaps are made in small batches using the cold-process method. They will not strip your skin's natural moisture but will leave you with healthy glowing skin you can feel good about. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for outof-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.
LIGHTING Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient.
