LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health and Wellness in the New Year For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with an opportunity for a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past, but with hope that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Boerne Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. In this issue, you will read about the wide range of places available in our community to work out your physical body, while also addressing your spiritual and mental health. Boerne has many places to explore, including yoga, Jui-Jitsu, CrossFit, individual and group fitness. You can even find places to exercise your funny bone with live comedy close by! There really is something for everyone. I love the insight Gillian Rodriguez shares about the self-care myth and for me, the need for time and space hit home. You will gain insight on ways to improve your physical and financial house and learn about the Omega Retreat Center right in the heart of Boerne. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night isn’t best for your health but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So, plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at Bakery Lorraine. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling, and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you. YOUR ‘RECESSION SURVIVAL’ CHECKLIST FROM EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISORS ARTICLE BY SEAN SEAMSTER AND RYAN MARQUARD

It’s unfortunate, but recessions are a fairly normal part of the economic landscape. When a recession occurs, how might you be affected? The answer depends on your individual situation. Consider these actions provided by Edward Jones to their financial advisors:

DON’T STOP INVESTING.

ASSESS YOUR INCOME STABILITY.

REVISIT YOUR PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS.

If you think your income could be threatened or disrupted, you might want to consider joining the “gig economy” or looking for freelance or consulting opportunities.

Sean Seamster

REVIEW YOUR SPENDING. Look for ways to trim your spending.

ASSESS YOUR RISK TOLERANCE.

Try to reduce your debts, especially those with high-interest rates.

If you find yourself worrying excessively about declines in your investment statements, you may want to reevaluate your tolerance for risk.

If you haven’t already built one, create an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid account.

REVIEW YOUR PROTECTION PLAN. If your health or life insurance is tied to your work, a change in your employment status could jeopardize this coverage. Review all your options for replacing these types of protection.

KEEP YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS IN MIND. Even if you adjust your portfolio during times of volatility, don’t lose sight of your long-term goals.

16

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FIN ANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

During a bear market, you will constantly be reminded of the decline of a particular market index. Look instead at the long-term performance of your portfolio to determine if you’re still on track toward meeting your goals.

PAY DOWN YOUR DEBTS.

PLAN YOUR EMERGENCY FUND.

Ryan Marquard

If you can afford it, continue investing. Coming out of a recession, stock prices tend to bottom out and then rebound, so if you had headed to the investment “sidelines,” you would have missed the opportunity to benefit from a market rally.

KEEP DIVERSIFYING. Diversification is always important for investors — by having a mix of stocks, mutual funds and bonds, you can reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. edwardjones.com/us-en financial-advisor/ sean-seamster edwardjones.com/us-en financial-advisor/ ryan-marquard A recession accompanied by a bear market is not pleasant. But by taking the appropriate steps, you can boost your chances of getting through a difficult period and staying on track toward your important financial goals.

B e gi n 2023 W i t h D ail y W ell n es s TIPS FOR BRINGING YOUR BEST SELF EVERY DAY ARTICLE BY GILLIAN RODRIGUEZ

How we care for our daily wellness encompasses a broad range of practices. Begin 2023 with a few daily wellness tips from Gillian Rodriguez, MA, LPC and local private practice owner of Trellis Counseling & Co. PLLC: 1. Sleep Hygiene: It starts the night before! Research shows that sleep disruption - trouble falling or staying asleep, especially if chronic - can be a key indicator that something is amiss with a person’s mental wellness. Practice sleep hygiene by creating a routine that begins an hour or so before you want to fall asleep. Minimize excessive physical activity during this timeframe, such as vigorous exercise or cleaning. If electronics are going to be used, consider relaxing, even boring content versus social scrolling. 2. Setting Intentions: This is distinct from setting goals because it gives the flexibility for imperfection. If we don’t achieve a goal, this can be perceived as a failure, which is usually a negative feeling. On

18

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | PROF E S S I ONAL S E RVI CE S

the other hand, setting intentions allows us to begin the day with a softer focus. 3. Personalized Wellness: Long walks on the beach and bubble baths may not be for everyone. Be willing to scrap buzz-worthy selfcare that doesn’t actually work, and get curious about personalized ways to boost your wellness. Your practice might not be popular, or even known to you yet. As a society, we have made self-care a commercialized product and service line instead of a customized practice for ourselves. 4. Self-Care is a Myth: Yes, I said it. None of us exist in a total vacuum. Effective wellness often involves things like time, space, or support from others. Example: If you are recharged by watching clouds for 30 minutes a day, you may need the cooperation of others to ensure you have that 30 minutes of sky-gazing while they manage life things. trelliscounselingco.com

Mocktails Are Very Popular Now LEARN HOW TO MAKE A SHRUB

This is my favorite healthy drink. I like to drink apple cider vinegar in the morning for my digestion. This Shrub makes it very palatable and enjoyable. This is the original soda made since the time of the Babylonians. I first came across it at Cured at the Pearl. I was so interested that I did a deep dive on Youtube and have been making them for years. Making a Shrub is easy once you understand the method. I get super creative with my own combinations of fruit and vinegar and also add another level of complexity by adding a third flavor profile. Ginger, turmeric, clove, or cinnamon is a great addition to the simple recipe of fruit, sugar, and vinegar.

Blueberry Ginger Shrub ingredients: • • • •

1 cup of blueberries 1 cup of sugar A few chunks of ginger 1 cup of apple cider vinegar

directions: Place the berries and ginger in a Mason jar, and cover with sugar. With the base of a wooden spoon smash the sugar with the berries. Cover and place on the counter for a few days. Shake the jar to incorporate the juices two times a day. On the 4th day strain the mixture and add vinegar. Throw the pulp away. Refrigerated syrup will last up to a year. Serve on ice with sparkling or still water. 1/4 cup of syrup and 1 cup of water is a good ratio to start. You can add less or more depending on taste.

Try these combinations in a Shrub: • • • • • • • • •

Strawberry, basil, apple cider vinegar Cherry, sage, white balsamic vinegar Peach, thyme, apple cider vinegar Pear, vanilla bean, mint, apple cider vinegar Grapes, rosemary, rice wine vinegar Apple, ginger, cinnamon, apple cider vinegar Cranberry, orange rind, thyme, apple cider vinegar Blackberry, clove, cinnamon, apple cider vinegar Tumeric, orange/lemon, apple cider vinegar

Jesse Barter from Hill and Vine in Fredericksburg Shared this wonderfully-tasting drink that can be served as a mocktail. This signature cocktail is called Snake in My Boot.

ingredients: • • • • •

2 oz Pineapple Juice 1 oz Prickly Pear Puree 3/4 oz Simple Syrup 1/2 oz Lime Juice 3 oz Topo Chico

Aaron Bielefeldt Aaron Bielefeldt is a proud husband, father, and local San Antonian who moved his family (wife Brooke, son Luke, and daughter Clara) to the Northwest side of town five years ago and had the idea to open his second CrossFit gym in the Fair Oaks Ranch area. Aaron talked about the importance of his gym being associated with a sense of community, motivation, and purpose. He also has an incredible CrossFit background: Aaron qualified and competed in the CrossFit Games in 2014, 2017 and 2022. He was recognized as one of the top ten CrossFit athletes in the world for his age group (CrossFit Games Master Qualifier) in 2022.

He went on to say how important the community aspect is. Neighbors motivate each other to not only get up and get to the gym but also hold each other accountable during the workouts. Being able to suffer through a tough workout will build friendships by testing your mental and physical limits. But, not to worry, this gym is unique because the owner and the coaches are there doing each set with you. Aaron’s CrossFit gym helps build bonds in the community and organically builds friendships through hard work, sweat, and accountability.

Neighbors motivate each other to not only get up and get to the gym but also hold each other accountable during the workouts.

Aaron informed me that his CrossFit gym is an excellent workout for beginners. The workouts can be modified to meet individual needs, so you can start slow and gradually increase the intensity as you become more comfortable with the exercises. He takes tremendous pride in knowing each of his members’ names and wants to be able to understand their individual goals. This is a stark contrast to the countless gyms currently open where everyone seems to work out alone.

Also, unlike other gyms, Aaron employs numerous certified training specialists who can either scale down your workout or intensify it. As qualified professional coaches, they can help ensure you don’t overexert or injure yourself while guaranteeing a high-intensity and beneficial workout. Aaron stressed, “If you are younger or older and looking to invest in your health and overall well-being, we are here to support you as a new member CONTINUED >

of our community and will work together to achieve your personal growth, reach new fitness goals, and reinforce a positive life change or transformation”. Aaron added, "This is an environment with a competitive spirit that will push you to your threshold, break past your limits, and let you discover new talents that you may not have known were even possible. CrossFit is simply the best way to find the best version of yourself, inside the gym and out. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you can do. Whether you work with a neighbor or trainer; if you keep showing up and trying your best, you’re a CrossFit athlete." CrossFit is a branded fitness regimen that involves constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. The method was developed by Greg Glassman, who founded CrossFit with Lauren Jenai in 2000, with CrossFit its registered trademark. Located at 28451 IH 10 West Suite 103, Boerne. Phone: 830.368.4198. #2 Outside Ear Headphones: A simple benefit of bone conduction headphones being outside the ear is that they improve awareness and safety when running in populated areas where vehicles, bicycles, and even people can be a potential danger.

#3 Jump Rope: For a good cardio workout and assists in building stamina.

#4 Loop Bands: Primarily used for strengthening the legs and buttocks. Strong leg and glute muscles helps tremendously reduce lower back pain.

A Veteran Jiu-Jitsu program coached by Barret Adams, a former flight paramedic, hosts a class free of charge to military, first responders and members of the community at Grind House on Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Anyone ages 13 and up are invited. This program is part of a non-profit organization that promotes the art of Jiu-Jitsu to promote the physical, mental and emotional health for body, mind and spirit wellness. The class begins and ends with a Sharing Circle where all are encouraged to comment on whatever’s on their minds. Adams then goes through teaching techniques or refresher exercises before the men break off into live rounds as partner practice. This assists the men in determining their body fitness. One round is five minutes so the techniques are taught to use your moves more efficiently to conserve stamina. The practice teaches the brain to record muscle memory and uses the movements mindfully rather than incorporating the “fight or flight” mentality.

Jiu-Jitsu is described as ground fighting and uses grappling techniques as a means of self-defense education. There are five belts available in the practice, with the Black Belt taking close to ten years to achieve. The practice provides excellent training for careers in law enforcement, military, EMS and fire-fighting. The Veteran Jiu-Jitsu groups partner with Warriors Heart in Bandera, which is a treatment center for first responders and military veterans. Warriors Heart provides private treatment to adult men and women eighteen and older who are seeking inpatient treatment for chemical dependency, alcohol abuse, and co-occurring psychological disorders relating to PTSD or the psychological effects of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury. The drug rehab programs treat the whole person using evidence-based and alternative treatments. At Warriors Heart they pride themselves for highly individualized care and specialized treatment that heals the body, mind, and spirit. It offers five different treatment programs: residential treatment, day treatment, outpatient, sober living program, and a detox center. warriorsheart.com Jiu-Jitsu is a family of Japanese martial arts and a system of close combat (unarmed or with a minor weapon) that can be used in a defensive or offensive manner. The technique originated in Japan and then was refined in Brazil. The Brazilian technique is what Adams teaches in his classes. This form of martial arts uses few or no weapons at all. Japanese Jiu-Jitsu is more like Judo where the techniques relied on strength. Brazilian

Jiu-Jitsu was developed for a smaller, weaker opponent and uses technique over power and strength. The term Jiu-Jitsu has the meaning of "yielding-art" with its core philosophy to manipulate the opponent's force against himself rather than confronting it with one's own force. Adams coaches at multiple locations in the San Antonio area. When asked what his takeaway from the practice is, he replied, “Jiu-Jitsu gave me the tools to implement the goals of becoming a whole person, collaborating between body, mind and spirit.” Barret Adams NRP, CCP-C - Owner/Avitus Training Grind House Training Facility in Boerne offers different levels of fitness classes, programs, personal training and boot camps to guide you through your fitness journey. THREE DI YS

For Cleaning and Disinfecting Naturally

Cleaning and disinfecting the kitchen or bathroom can seem like a daunting task without using harsh chlorine bleach-based cleaners and other chemicals but learning how can help protect your family’s health. Thieves Household Cleaner (THC) essential oil blend cleans and sanitizes with the power of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus radiata and rosemary.

/

/

1

2

/

3

Instructions: 1/

Place cut-up lint-free cleaning cloths in a sealable jar to make reusable cleaning wipes. For a 1 1/2 L jar of wipes, I used two caps (2 T) of THC, 1/2 cup of Everclear/cheap vodka, and 2 cups of filtered water. The alcohol helps the liquid evaporate faster from surfaces. For a disposable option, use paper towel rolls cut in half or coffee filters.

2/

Mix together 1/2 cap (1 t) Thieves Household Cleaner, 1T baking soda, 2 drops lemon oil, until it makes a paste. Scrub marks and

stains on nonporous surfaces with the paste. The lemon oil helps removes stains and whiten surfaces.

3/

My all-purpose cleaner remains simply a capful of THC with filtered water in a spray bottle. Again, if you need to spray items that need a more quick dry/extra disinfecting effect, add a teaspoon of vodka or Everclear to the bottle. THE BENEFIT S of PL ANT-BASED E ATING ARTICLE BY CLAUDIA MARTIN-AYOADE PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAYMOND WILEY

44

EAT R IGH T | WEL L NESS

Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant-based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients.

You do not have to give up meat entirely, and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which means you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meat but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; it is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet! PLANT-BASED EATING IS MORE OF A LIFESTYLE THAN A DIET. YOU ARE SIMPLY EATING MORE FOODS THAT ARE CLOSER TO THEIR HARVESTED STATE WITH MINIMAL PROCESSING. 46

EAT R IGH T | WEL L N ESS

1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder to stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like. 2. Plant-based diet does not mean boring. You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots, and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low B12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12. 6. A meat free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life. RECIPE SPOTLIGHT

VEGETABLE QUICHE Recipe provided from Lauren Lane @lauren_lane_culinarian

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • •

1 pie dough 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 cups mixed veggies, such as raw spinach leaves and cooked broccoli and asparagus 7 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 1/4 cups light cream 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs like parsley or thyme 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon fresh cracked pepper 3/4 cup grated gruyere or white cheddar cheese 1/4 cup grated parmigiano-reggiano

Instructions 1. 2. 3.

4.

5.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Transfer the dough to a 9-inch pie plate and press it into shape. Crimp the edges if desired. Place a sheet of parchment paper or foil into the pie shell and fill with pie weights, uncooked rice or dried beans. Bake until the edges are very lightly golden, about 25 minutes. Remove the pie crust but keep the oven on. If edges start getting too brown, cover with a pie cover or foil. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, cream, herbs, nutmeg, salt and pepper in a large bowl and lightly whisk. Sprinkle half of the gruyere or cheddar and parmigiano-reggiano on the crust, followed by the veggies, and then the remaining cheese. Pour the egg mixture over the top and bake until set, about 35 minutes.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH AFTER BARRE Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

48

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SATUR DAY Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here! 50
