A Peaceful, Joy-Filled Holiday Season Dear Boerne Lifestyle Readers, It's hard to believe that we're at the end of another exciting year. As the team at Boerne Lifestyle has grown, one of my favorite aspects of leading the magazine has been our monthly content meetings. That's where the magic of what we do truly happens — the collaborative process and the opportunity for everyone to share ideas for the upcoming issues. It's an energizing process often filled with lots of laughter. We are blessed to have you journey with us as we strive to make each issue special. In this December issue, we've gathered together stories that I hope will warm your hearts as the winter chill sets in. First and foremost, we're excited to invite you into our annual Giving Campaign. If you know someone in town who is going through challenging circumstances, we would love for you to consider nominating them. More details about this campaign can be found in this issue, and we hope you'll join us in nominating someone in need. It's a chance for us to come together as a community and give back to those who need it most. We look at some less conventional ways to celebrate: host a "supper safari" this season, or take off to the enchanting British Virgin Islands, a destination that offers not only stunning natural beauty but also a unique culinary experience and life-long memories. And since this is a season of giving, we’ve wrapped up stories to help you do so in more than one way. There's something truly special about being on the giving side of the season, and I personally cherish the joy that comes from seeing recipients receive a gift they love. Whether it's a thoughtful gesture, a donation to a charity, or simply sharing the spirit of the season with your loved ones, we hope our guides inspire you to give in a meaningful way. As we gather with friends and family, let's remember the joy of giving, the magic of the holiday season, and the warmth of our beautiful Boerne community. ‘Tis the season to welcome in the era of holiday festivities. December is a month of celebration, with parties and dinners setting the scene for warm memories of time spent with relatives and friends alike. But if you’re looking for a way to put a creative spin on your seasonal fetes, the concept of a progressive dinner — or “safari supper” — might be your go-to to put some new zest in your traditional Christmas feast. Hospitality expert and owner of Water to Wine Hospitality Dempsey Warren gives some insight into the ways you can execute an enjoyable progressive dinner this holiday season. CONTINUED >

“If you’re looking for a way to put a creative spin on your seasonal fetes, the concept of a progressive dinner — or “safari supper” — might be your go-to to put some new zest in your traditional Christmas feast.” Warren had an unconventional path to becoming an event-planning connoisseur. In fact, it began in a completely different setting. Warren recalled sitting in her calculus class in high school, wondering what she would do after she graduated. At the time, Warren said she wanted to be a teacher or a coach, although it wasn’t until after working weddings in college that she realized that she wanted to be an event planner so she could host people well. Warren has a degree in sports management, a field in which she still works part-time. Fast forward to the present day: Warren is undoubtedly in the business of serving and celebrating others well. But she’s also in the business of enabling those around her to execute their own celebrations. “Celebrating well and equipping others to do the same” is her mission statement, so Warren has her sights set on leaving her clients not only with joyful celebrations to remember but also with the tools needed to plan their own events in the future. Warren’s hospitality operation does just about everything from specialized ranch weddings to detailed nonprofit galas. And without a doubt, Christmas parties and dinners are no exception. As defined by Warren, a “progressive dinner” or “safari supper” is “a way to capitalize on an evening out” with the main idea being that you trek from place to place with each change of course. However, this leaves some room for interpretation by the artists creating the dinner — Warren explained the many ways that this can be done. Progressive dinners are popular during the holidays, but Dempsey said it’s most commonly centered around going

from home to home in your own neighborhood. One idea is to begin at your own home with some cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, then advance to a friend’s home for an appetizer, then another for the main course, and so on. This in turn can be a great way to get to know your neighbors who are in similar seasons of life, said Warren. Perhaps the most literal way to translate this idea would be moving from room to room throughout your home, say if you’re planning to host for the whole evening. For example, starting the evening with your cocktail hour on the patio or foyer, and then progressing through different locations in the home. Warren said she has even seen this done with an “elemental” theme, where each course was one of the four elements: earth, wind, water, and fire. Or, for Christmas, this can be done with each course themed after different aspects of the holiday: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer cocktail, anyone? In case you’re out of town for the holidays, don’t worry: you can take the progressive dinner to go. Warren said restaurant hopping is another way to execute the progressive dinner concept, even if you’re away from your home or neighborhood. Whether you choose to do this locally with a group of friends, or away while visiting a new place with family, you’re sure to enjoy a variety of cuisines at a variety of restaurants. Dempsey said this is also a great way to maximize a new place when you won’t be visiting for long. So it may be safe to say that no matter your location this Christmas, a progressive dinner might be closer to home than thought. CONTINUED >

Does the winter cold have you dreaming of somewhere warmer? Many families begin planning now for winter getaways or tropical vacations at any time of the year. And one Boerne family has the perfect way to escape the cold. What started as a romantic 10-year anniversary trip for Woody and Annette Sandlin turned into a lifelong passion and family business. The Sandy Cinco is a 58-foot catamaran based in the British Virgin Islands, owned and operated by the local family. Recently refitted from private ownership, their Fountaine Pajot Ipanema 58 is brand new to chartering and just embarked on its first season in November. Their daughter named it after the family (“Sandy”) of five (“Cinco”), and the boat has space for eight guests with luxury cabins, a spacious saloon, sun loungers, and plenty of water toys for excursions and adventuring. On a typical cruise liner, passengers may be limited in excursions,

inundated with crowds, and suffering through buffet-style meals. But theirs is a highly personalized travel experience, with each party creating a personalized itinerary that perfectly suits their needs. Before boarding the Sandy Cinco, guests are given a preference sheet so the crew is able to customize activities, destinations (even including specific bays and islands), food and drink, and other excursions. Prefer solitude? There are beaches for that. Prefer nightlife? Yep, that too. The Sandy Cinco comes equipped with two double kayaks, two stand-up paddle boards, snorkeling gear, wakeboards, water skis, and inner tubes to ride behind the powerful dinghy. Snorkeling and tubing are the favorites of many families with children. Captains Mike and Lizzy Hill bring more than a decade of experience in the BVI and know every nook and cranny that the islands have to offer. to suit any style of traveler. Families can enjoy an entire beach to themselves relaxing while kids snorkel or go for a ride on an inner tube in pristine, calm waters. Alternatively, Jost Van Dyke is a year-round favorite known for its vibrant nightlife, while Norman Island is known for its caves, snorkeling, and local hotspot, Willy T’s — a restaurant and bar built into a replica of an old schooner. Snorkeling aficionados can see squid, sting rays, octopus, turtles, and even shipwrecks. The RMS Rhome was a UK Royal Mail ship that sunk during a hurricane in 1867, but it’s a popular dive site today because it lies in clear waters and its shallowest portion is only 23 feet down. Another landmark feature of the BVI is the “Baths,” a granite rock formation that straddles the land and sea. Visitors commonly hike and snorkel through these unique rock formations on Virgin Gorda. Traveling the BVI by catamaran allows individuals to have unique experiences; jeep rentals are available on some islands while deep-sea fishing charters can pick up guests directly from the chartered boat. The Sandlin family prefers to experience a variety of the islands that make the BVI unique. They split time between some of the quieter and secluded bays to enjoy time on the beach with just family, then sail to one of the islands with exciting nightlife to enjoy good food and music. Woody and Annette once booked a lobster fishing excursion with a local fisherman. Unlike in New England, the local guide here free dives to the bottom and retrieves a lobster with a spear before bringing it back to the surface. After catching a lobster, it is brought back to the boat where Lizzy — herself a gourmet chef — includes it in a fresh seafood dinner. CONTINUED >

Lizzy has cooked in the BVI for years. During a stay on the Sandy Cinco, guests can expect every dish to be a highlight of their trip. Breezie Campbell, owner of Socially Cured, is a local expert par excellence in this food field, and she shares how you can create beautiful and unique boards for friends and family during the upcoming holiday season and all year long.

HOW DID YOU GET INTERESTED IN CHARCUTERIE? After overcoming a loss that rocked my world in 2019, a beautiful redemption story was in the making. No one can prepare a 32-year-old woman for what I faced. After losing my best friend, spouse, and partner and becoming a single parent to two littles under five, I decided I was not going to let grief and loss define our story. Instead, I found purpose through passion. The charcuterie market was becoming all the craze in 2019-2020, but Socially Cured was the first charcuterie delivery business in Boerne. Even with the pandemic halting all our lives, people still found joy in charcuterie boards. It seemed to bring some normalcy to all the chaos and uncertainty. With a vision of bringing family, friends, and loved ones together, Socially Cured was born. It is my joy and privilege to bring people together with beautiful food, conversation, and experiences that will last a lifetime.

TELL US ABOUT DIFFERENT WAYS OF DOING CHARCUTERIE. Charcuterie is fun because it’s truly an art. I love to experiment with different ways to display — whether it’s on vintage trays, old pieces of rustic wood or even creating small charcuterie bites in cups, bamboo boats, or brass goblets and martini glasses. Getting creative and watching a display come to life is fascinating. But, let’s talk about “grazing.” There is nothing more captivating than walking into an event and seeing a six-to12-foot “Graze Table!” It’s a charcuterie board on steroids! We love to incorporate boards, baskets, and lush foliage to capture the beauty and esthetics of what we’ve created. How amazing is it to see clusters of grapes cascading off baskets, fresh berries scattered throughout, bowls and bowls of different olives, nuts of all varieties filled in every crevice, artisan crackers pouring out of baskets, cheeses, meats, crudités with whipped feta… And if it’s a real celebration you may find a literal cheese cake nearby. I love that every season sources fresh new products that I can incorporate with each creation. I’m a huge fan of apricots, peaches, cherries and figs in the summer, and persimmons, pears, and pomegranate in the fall and early winter. You typically won’t see a Socially Cured display without some of our most coveted cheeses, which includes: Fromager d’Affinois Triple Cream Brie, Beemster Gouda, Bellavitano Sartori, Cypress Grove’s Humboldt Fog and Point Reyes Blue Cheese. HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON THE AMOUNTS OF INGREDIENTS FOR THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE? The typical rule of thumb when curating a charcuterie board or “graze table” is 3 oz of cheese and 2oz of meat per person. Add an extra ounce or two if this is a full meal. For your typical dinner party appetizer remember the “3-3-3-3 Rule.” Three cheeses, three meats, three nuts or starches, and three accompaniments. Don’t overthink it, just have fun and get creative!

Good For The Sole Serves Boerne One Pair of Shoes at a Time

Two years ago, self-described “sneakerhead” Noah Patton decided to take his passion and turn it toward his community. Patton found himself discussing with his family how he could use his love of shoes for good, so he decided to team up with close friend Andrew De Los Santos to start a new nonprofit. The flyers they spread around Fair Oaks Ranch proclaimed the name that symbolized both their passion and their purpose: Good For The Sole. Good For The Sole works to collect, repurpose, and give away kicks to those who need them, Patton said. The staff includes Patton, a senior at Champion High School, De Los Santos, and a few of their close friends like Tre Hudspeth, and Reagan Burkey. Here’s how it works: Patton places sneaker donation bins around the Boerne area. In fact, Good For The Sole already has bins at five out of seven Boerne elementary schools, and Patton has plans to establish bins at the remaining two. Once a bin is filled with shoes, he picks them up and he and his team will count them, clean them, box them, and finally, wrap them. Then comes Patton’s favorite part: the distribution. So far, Good For The Sole has distributed two

batches of sneakers to the local community: the first being a delivery of 37 pairs to children partnered with Inner City Development, and the second providing 104 pairs to Haven for Hope. While there is variety, Patton said their main clientele is elementary-aged children. On their first-ever shoe delivery to Inner City Development, Patton recalled an interaction with a girl receiving her pair of sneakers. Patton said that he and his team had arrived at Inner City Development ready to greet children and distribute their sneakers, but had to wait a while for their first recipient to arrive. A little girl arrived wearing torn slides, and Patton remembered the joy the girl expressed upon finding a perfect fit. “She was like, ‘Oh my gosh they’re so pretty!’” Patton recalled. Not only has the nonprofit experienced rapid growth, but Patton has plans to continue Good For The Sole post-graduation. Over the course of its existence, Good For The Sole has acquired a website and a social media presence. And as long as the shoes keep coming in, Patton hopes more and more kids across Boerne and the San Antonio area will get the chance to shine in their new sneakers.

“I ended up adopting five dogs in six months,” Hilary Woodworth recalls. When her two children were young, she says, “My little girl started wanting our cats to play with her and she would run across the backyard and look behind her to see if the cats were chasing her and obviously they weren’t. So I was like, we need to get a dog that'll be a friend for her.” Inspired by her mother who had a penchant for caring for cats in their neighborhood, Woodworth knew adoption was the right choice for her family. “We adopted a dog named ‘Charming’… he was perfect, but all he wanted to do was sleep! So I started looking for another dog, and I thought it would be very hard to find a childfriendly, cat-friendly, housebroken dog, but there were tons!” Since that first venture into pet adoption, Woodworth founded Charming Pet Rescue (named after that original pup) in 2015, a rescue shelter run out of her home for dogs and cats who have been living on the street, are abandoned, or are at risk in

high-kill shelters. With all that experience, she’s become an expert when it comes to knowing what to consider before committing to adding a new pet to a family. A puppy or kitten with a jaunty red bow around its neck under the tree may be a quintessential scene of Americana Christmas. But before you take the leap and add a furry friend as a holiday gift, there are a number of factors to consider to make it the best experience for both your family and the animal. After all, unlike other gifts, this one comes with years of responsibility included.

PET RESCUE SAVES LIVES When you adopt a pet, you are not just gaining a new member of your family; you are saving a life. By choosing to adopt, you provide a loving and secure environment for an animal in need, and the reward is immeasurable. “I just can't imagine buying or paying money for a dog when there's so many amazing dogs in rescue,” Woodworth

laments. “There are even puppies born in rescues–really sweet, amazing, adoptable dogs.” Woodworth also encourages prospective adoptive families to look beyond puppies. “A lot of people get a puppy because they think there's something magical about having a dog from puppyhood to senior,” she continues. “But an adult dog will bond with you immediately and amazingly.”

THE PERFECT MATCH It's critical to select a pet that fits your lifestyle, home, and family. Woodworth gives insight into finding the right animal for your family: “I think it's important to know the personality of the cat or dog that you want. Because a lot of people go for a breed, but I wish that people would look for the personality because there are so many amazing, family-friendly mutts.” Take the time to visit rescues and shelters and interact with the animals so you can assess the size, energy level, and temperament of potential pets to ensure it aligns with your needs and lifestyle.

Bringing a new pet into your home is a lifelong commitment that merits serious consideration. Pets require love and attention — in addition to food, shelter, and a place to potty — so it's essential to be prepared for the time and effort it takes to provide a happy and healthy life for your companion. Understand the responsibilities of pet ownership, including feeding, grooming, exercise, and regular veterinary care. “If you're not ready to do all the puppy things for the first two years of the dog's life, you might as well adopt a calm adult who's already been through all of it,” Woodworth advises. Remember: a pet becomes part of your family and should never be considered disposable.

Even if you’re not in a season of life to adopt, there are so many ways to get involved in supporting the life-saving mission of Charming Pet Rescue. Last year they placed over 1,000 animals and their annual vet bill was $250,000. They are set to exceed both those numbers in 2023, and this work cannot be sustained without the support of the community. Woodworth says foster families are the heart of the operation, and other volunteers keep the rescue operational by doing everything from caring for the animals to taking dogs to and from their vet appointments. Monetary donations are always welcome and help provide food, vaccines, and veterinary care for all the animals in their custody, but Charming Pet Rescue also gratefully accepts any in-kind donations. Is your cat not taking to his new food? Your growing puppy doesn't fit in her crate anymore? The rescue will take all used pet items, including medicine, collars, leashes, bowls, and even sheets, quilts, and towels. Finally, the rescue frequently posts about available dogs and cats on their Facebook page, and liking and sharing posts is one of the simplest ways to join the cause. Woodworth understands that there is something magical about the bond between humans and their pets. “It's really good for children. Babies who grow up with dogs and cats in the house have fewer allergies as adults, and it

If you’re considering bringing a pet home during the holidays, carefully evaluate your plans and assess whether you have the capacity during the season to help your new pet adjust. Woodworth reminds families that, “one of the most important things to know is that it's going to take time even for the best dog in the world to acclimate to your house and to the people in your house.”

There’s something extra special about checking the mailbox around Christmas time, and it isn’t just keeping an eye out for deliveries. Mixed in with the ads and the bills are beautifully designed holiday cards displaying cheerful faces and well wishes. The tradition of mailing Christmas cards started nearly 200 years ago and has become so modernized that it takes about 10 minutes to throw one together on websites. However, the timeless tradition of Christmas newsletters started in 1950 and endures even in the age of social media. Don’t confuse these letters with the charming notes children write to Santa asking for toys and candy. Instead, these letters serve as a mass announcement of sorts that recaps the most mundane experiences and the biggest of accomplishments of the year. They’re fun, boastful, informative, and full of personality. Think of it as a year-in-review sent to everyone in your address book. But how can you make your family’s letter stand out? We’ve got you covered.

THE ESSENCE A Christmas letter should feel like a catch-up phone call on paper. Think of it like leaving a voicemail to someone you haven’t spoken to all year and you want to fill them in on everything all at once. This is your time to brag, rant, celebrate, and lay it all out. There are no rules, and no one will be grading you on proper grammar

or sentence complexity or the stories you share. They can be as formal and complex or as simple as you like. This is the time to share things that aren’t included in a Facebook post. How did it feel when your last child left for college? Was it scary finding a new job after being in the same position for so long? Have you been making the same recipe for a month because you just can’t get enough? Anything is fair game when it comes to the Christmas newsletter.

THE CONTENT There are lots of creative ways to tell your story and this is a fun opportunity for your family to gather together and decide what you want to share. More than likely, not everyone has had a perfect year and this can also be an opportunity to share unpleasant news mixed in with the happier times. A great place to start is with everyone’s favorite memories, then move on to accomplishments, new hobbies, etc. Some key moments will be easy to recall, like the birth of a child or a college acceptance letter, but the simpler pleasures are where the real magic is. One idea would be to include a few quotes from you and your family that add an intimate touch to the letter, especially if you have kids who say the darndest things or an elder with some wicked one-liners or sage advice. THE FORMAT Even though this is a holiday “letter,” that doesn’t mean it has to follow standard formatting rules. Tell your story in a way that’s fun and reflects who you and your family are. There are so many ways to personalize it and creative liberties you can take. A popular idea is to make it look like a newspaper with headlines and snippets of text. You could also do it in a scrapbook page format with photos and subheadings that will set it apart from a typical letter. A play on this idea would be adding news clips, certificates, awards, concert tickets, or whatever to really showcase your family's exciting events and accomplishments. With all that in mind, be sure to leave space to talk about your future plans and ambitions. When next Christmas rolls around, the letters from past years can serve as time capsules and make for fun chatter around the tree.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES The stories you share are the main focus, but that doesn’t mean the paper it's printed on can’t tell a story of its own. Some design choices you can make are with the fonts and borders of the paper. The Most Generous Time of the Year Make Giving Do the Most Good Along with presents and time spent with loved ones, the holiday season is also filled with generosity. Nonprofit organizations typically receive around 30% of their annual giving in December, with as much as 10% given in the last three days of the year. Clay Rogers with Teamwork Financial Group offers tips on how to make your year-end donations do the most good for you and your community.

IS GIVING DURING THE HOLIDAYS DIFFERENT? Giving during the holidays is actually no different from giving throughout the rest of the year. It is beneficial for the organizations at any time, but most nonprofits see a large amount of yearly donations come in at this time. Many people are more inclined to do it during this season due to “holiday spirit,” end-of-year compensation packages, and many other reasons.

WHO CAN MAKE DONATIONS? Anyone can make year-end donations, even businesses. High earners can include their giving in their itemized deductions. If you take the standard deduction (like the majority of Americans), you will not see a tax advantage, but this doesn’t mean giving will be a “waste” by any means. All giving is extremely beneficial for the selected charity even if the donor doesn’t get a tax benefit. Depending on their age and the amount in tax-deferred plans like a traditional IRA, some taxpayers can direct their IRS-required minimum distributions to a charitable organization via a qualified charitable distribution.

WHICH ORGANIZATIONS CAN I GIVE TO? From a tax standpoint, a nonprofit must usually be registered with the IRS under section 501(c)(3) for a giver to deduct their donations. The donor must also meet some requirements, including the type and amount of a donation in relation to a taxpayer’s adjusted gross income, if services were rendered to the donor for the donation, if an item was given for the donation, and other qualifiers that determine if and how much of a donation is tax-deductible to an individual.

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving.
