We Love Our Kids and Pets As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community - kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special. I had the pleasure of meeting Denise and Ellie Mazour for the cover shoot with their beloved pet Chuckles. Not sure how many communities have the variety of pets as we do, but it sure makes living here fun! In this issue, we are highlighting a talented and bright group of teens, hearing from local businesses focused on helping our kids stay healthy and getting tips from a local dog trainer. We also wanted to share some family and petfriendly spots around town. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love.

FUN COOKING AND BAKING SESSIONS FOR CHILDREN ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Looking for ideas to keep the kids busy on these hot summer afternoons? Chef Julie Olsen-Smith of the Cooking Castle conducts cooking and baking classes for children of all ages. Her classes are held in Ms. Sue’s Art Studio on Old Fredericksburg Road. Camps are held throughout the summer and after school. Check the website thecookingcastle.com/ for schedules and fees. When I visited a session in June the kids had just mixed together the ingredients for homemade vanilla ice cream and were starting to gather the items to make snickerdoodle cookies. The day before the class made Asian fare of eggrolls and rice. Each day the kids make something different. Chef Julie explains the process, the importance of certain ingredients and how to carefully mix the creations. She and her helpers, of course, handle the actual cooking appliances. The camps help teach children sharing, interpersonal skills and problem solving. The children are grouped by age into six tables of five or six each. There is a teen-age helper at each table to assist. Chef Julie also provides cooking and baking activities for birthday parties.

Chef Julie will be a coach and teacher at Boerne Middle School North in the new school year. She has always had a passion for cooking and baking as a child and as she became older added nutrition to her pursuits. After completing a Dietetics degree from Florida State University in 2004, she decided to become a Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher shortly after. For the past 17 years Julie has taught Culinary Arts and Nutrition to students of all ages. She also has spent most of her summers and holidays teaching cooking camps and classes. Julie recently moved to Boerne with her husband Jeff, and her two daughters Grace (10) and Ruby (6).

SIX AMAZING POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT TIPS FOR DOG OWNERS: 1. LOTS OF TREATS - Dogs are passionate eaters, and when it comes to treats, they will do just about everything to munch them down. Dogs love eating soft and chewy treats. Break them into smaller bites. You can use commercial dog treats, homemade treats, chicken balls, or even cheese also serves the purpose. 2. ACT LIKE TEAMMATES - Positive reinforcement heavily relies on politeness from the owner’s end. Do not act like a leader or dominate the training session. Your pup will not feel stressed, and learning new tricks becomes relatively easier in a friendly environment.

3. STRENGTHEN YOUR BOND - Dog training can be challenging, especially for inexperienced owners. You have to deal with the ups and downs while familiarizing dogs with the human world. And the most important thing to remember is patience. 4. KNOW WHAT YOUR DOG LIKES - Positive reinforcement is a funny teaching method that adds joy to both you and your canine’s life. Once you notice that the animal is not enjoying a particular command/practice, put it on hold for a while. For example, if the dog is not fetching the ball with passion, go for sit or stay commands. 5. REMOVE DISTRACTIONS - You will get the maximum benefit from the dog training session only if the pup is fully engaged and committed to positive behavior. Removing distractions, including other animals, kids, noises, etc., and shortening the sessions will help sustain their excitement level for the future. 6. BE POSITIVE - Last but not least, stay positive and add things that motivate your pups. From facial expressions to hand movements and voice pitch to making eye contact, show your willingness to work hard for a common goal. Reward the pets every time they behave well: treats, toys, appreciation, short breaks, a game of tug and even a smile on your face. Let them know they are heading in the right direction.

At the time, soccer high school athlete, Samantha Maudsley, underwent surgery for two ACL knee injuries. and friendly. Their techniques are designed to promote my recovery and truly made me stronger and better than ever. I feel I definitely owe them a debt of gratitude for their perseverance in never letting up on the goals I set for myself to return to soccer without limitations.” Maudsley has since played as an International Women’s soccer player and will currently be starting her junior year this Fall at The University of Louisiana/Monroe as part of the women’s soccer team as a ten-player midfield position. The Incubator.edu Boerne program was started in an attempt to bring real-world experience into the classroom. We teach students to think like entrepreneurs and that means solving a problem they might have encountered in their lives or on some level looking at how the problem is currently being solved and doing it better than it is being done currently. The local investors were many -- our whole community was involved and we are so thankful. The judges were Bill Bird of Bird Imports, Will Hawkins of Goettl AC and Plumbing, Stephanie Chandler of Jackson Walker, LLP. Justin McKenzie from the Boerne Kendall County Angel Network helped out all year as well as Rich Sena from the BISD school board. The program is funded by donations from local businesses and community members. The money that is awarded can be used by the students to further their business. They have to form an LLC to receive that funding. Or, they can divide it up and use it as scholarship money that will be sent directly to their school of choice. We look for mentors who really want to work with teenagers and share their wisdom, knowledge and connections with high school students. One such mentor was Glenn Coward of CapabilitySource who worked with the Bonsai Chef team that won first place. They created a phone app that creates recipe suggestions based on what is in your pantry after scanning store receipts. Bonsai Chef boys shared their post-high school plans. Ishi Estacio will attend UTSA and major in Business, Ethan Coffin will attend Texas A&M and major in Business Entrepreneurship, Ty Alexander will attend Texas A&M Corpus Christi and major in Business or Economics, Leo Petriu will study Economics in Europe, and Chase Balderas is only a junior so he will return to take the Business Practicum class next year.

When asked how the program prepared him for his professional future, Ethan stated, "Incubator has given me a great understanding of what it means to be an entrepreneur, and while I certainly have more to learn, I have a much better grip on how to do nearly everything business-related, from communicating with associates to conducting pitches or delegating tasks to my fellow team members. Coach Breuer, the mentors, and the Incubator program do an excellent job providing you with every resource you need to succeed. You just have to provide the initiative to use those resources." Ishi responded to the question about what attracted him to the Incubator program, to which he replied, "The idea of a team effort, ideation, and process of building a business. The experience in Incubator allowed me to progress and break my comfort zone. Moreover, it allows me to connect with people who are successful and to learn from their experiences." The team that raised all the money for us was called Fireworks Funding. Joshua Springs Park & Preserve BOASTS OF A TWO-ACRE ENCLOSED DOG PARK

Joshua Springs Park & Preserve outside Boerne off IH-10 West (exit 533) has a two-acre enclosed park for dogs. Complete with agility features and the space separated for large and small dogs, it is a beautiful area to enjoy the sunshine as well as give your dogs freedom to roam off-leash. Water troughs are continually filled to satisfy the fur babies’ thirst for a drink before off to play some more. In case you forget the waste bags, Mutt Mitts dispensers are available, along with trash cans. Picnic tables and benches are located in the dog park. The park is open from May 1 through September 30 from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m.
