Hello Readers! It brings me joy to introduce myself to you as the Publisher and Owner of Boerne Lifestyle magazine. Over the years this magazine has been on my coffee table, kitchen table, and in the hands of visitors to our house. I’ve enjoyed the feature articles and the quality of the publication. My prayer is that we can fulfill our mission to connect and inform readers, share inspiring stories, and encourage you to be an active part of our community. Boerne is attracting many people to live, play, and of course, shop. After all, we have such a rich history, unique people, and wonderful locally owned businesses. This month’s magazine is all about the Gents – the men who work hard to protect our community, make a difference by bringing us together, and those who remind us to have some fun. As we recognize and honor the men in our lives, I want to start by thanking my husband, Kevin Bove, for being the rock of our family and for the many ways he gives of himself for others. Happy Father’s Day to all the men who have children of their own, as well as those who have influenced, helped shape and mentored those needing a father figure. To all the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it. Through answered prayers, God brought me to Boerne Lifestyle and I am thrilled to be serving the community in this capacity. In the spirit of summer, enjoy your family time, sit back, relax, and happy reading!

Men Who Give Their Time And Talent To Others
Matt Surber at Hauptstrasse Barbershop
Ernie Pyles at The Boerne Bookshop
MATT SURBER
ERNIE PYLES
Lead Pastor of Mission City Churches Matt Surber has dedicated his life and calling to teaching God’s word as a way to know His character and how we lead our lives. Pastor Surber’s church communities undertake a Man and Ministry monthly program where they feed underserved families. Groceries and sundries are delivered each month with a collection box available where parishioners can donate items. The members of the church also help out with physical needs of widows, seniors and other people in the community. Pastor Surber’s wife is a realtor and they have two boys, both involved in sports in high school and college. “We all know that we have been blessed and that it is our responsibility to give back to our community.” To view messages or to listen to Pastor Matt’s messages you can go to www.missioncity.church/media.
Another great example of a resident in the area who donates their time to local organizations is Ernie Pyles. He is happy to call this area home for the last 18 years. He and his wife Karen have two adult daughters, Miranda and Katherine. Since retiring in December 2018, Karen and Ernie have volunteered their time in a variety of areas. Some of those beneficiaries of their time and talent include Hill Country Family Services, Kendall County Women’s Shelter, Primarily Primates, and Boerne ISD. A retired Lieutenant Colonel, Pyles served on the Boerne ISD Board of Trustees and has chaired the long-range steering committee twice. “My passion is supporting Boerne ISD in whatever volunteer capacity helps the District move forward. Our Kids, Their Future!” When asked what inspirational words he lives by, Pyles quoted Winston Churchilll, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” “The need for community service in the Boerne area continues to grow each year.”

BOERNE CHIEF OF POLICE STEVE PEREZ
BENNETT KENNEDY
Steve Perez was sworn in as the sixth Chief of the Boerne Police Department on February 25, 2022. Chief Perez was born and raised in San Antonio. He began his law enforcement career in 1998 with the Alamo Community Colleges District Department of Public Safety. In 1999, he joined the City of Boerne as a police officer. Chief Perez serves on several local nonprofit organizations as a board member. Chief Perez has been married for more than 21 years to his wife, Kathleen. They have two sons, Diego and Max. Although Chief Perez has always been active with his sons coaching their sports teams, he has a little more fixed schedule so he can spend more quality family time. “My sons have always known the life with a police officer, whether I was on the streets or as an investigator always on call.” The Chief is proud of the Department and has welcomed the chance to promote officers and hiring good, quality people to serve Boerne residents since his promotion in February.
President of the Champion Athletic Booster Club (CABC) at Champion High, a realtor for Phyllis Browning Co. and the Jason Glast Group, Bennett Kennedy is passionate about giving back to his community. CABC’s purpose is to raise funds to support the athletic programs at Champion. The parents and volunteers in the Booster Club work hard to raise around $160 to $180K annually through the local business sponsorships and membership in CABC for the fourteen teams. Kennedy’s wife Vicki, volunteers for several non-profits in Boerne and the surrounding area and has raised several million dollars for Magdelena House. Their sons participate in sports at Champion and are called to give back as well. “It is our social responsibility to share our blessings” says Kennedy. The couple also founded Bass Club of Champions for those middle school to high school children who may not be interested in school sports teams, but want to feel connected to the school and community. The programs provide students the opportunity to fish in six tournaments regionally against other clubs. They also participate in service programs. JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . A GOAL OF RUSTY BELDEN AND BELDEN’S AUTOMOTIVE & TIRES
“The community supports us so we in turn support our community,” explains Rusty Belden, President of Belden’s Automotive & Tires. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Belden’s now has seven locations, the nearest at 29137 IH-10 West near Boerne. The latest events the company sponsored were the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Concert For a Cure and Drive Fore a Cure. The concert, hosted by Dog & Pony featured Texas musician Cory Morrow. The Dominion was the venue for the golf tournament. A friend of many people in Boerne has the disease so that cause is near and dear to their hearts.
In November each year, Rusty donates funds to the San Antonio Food Bank and the Hill Country Daily Bread on behalf of Belden’s Automotive & Tires. Coats and Clothes Drives are held throughout the year with drop stations at each of Belden’s locations. These items are donated to Sam’s Ministry in San Antonio and Hill Country Daily Bread. Before schools start each year there are drop stations for the Stuff the Bus program. Belden’s also supports organizations and events in area schools. Rusty joined his father’s company in 2005. He attended school in San Antonio and graduated from Baylor University. He has three children, all in Boerne schools. Belden’s Automotive & Tires opened for business in 1972. “After spending so much time at the shop as a young child, I am excited to be a part of the business and see how much everything in the industry has changed. I am also thrilled to be a part of the future growth and be directly able to help customers I have seen come through the doors in the past and continue to this day.” At Belden’s Automotive & Tires, we are committed to providing quality service using high-tech diagnostic methods, but with an “old-fashioned” emphasis on doing the job right the first time. Belden’s is a state-of-theart garage that can handle all diagnostics, and it is our goal to provide a clean and safe environment for our employees as well as a timely, professional and courteous service to our customers. Giving back is so important these days and we can all be inspired by the philanthropic activities of Belden’s and other companies in our area. Let’s do what we can to give back to our community.

With Some Great “Guy Food”
Snagging the corner building on Main and San Antonio Streets, Patrick and Christina Cleary were able to expand their business enterprises. Salty and Sweet has been a staple on the Hill Country Mile, offering all kinds of sweet treats. Now we have Blacksmith Grill to add to our dining pleasure. The building, formerly a blacksmith shop, has a rustic feel and the menu offerings are hearty and filling. Good guy food! Andy McCall is the design consultant that aided in the Cleary’s vision for the restaurant – everything from the seasonings, the menu to the décor. The restaurant is roomy with three dining areas and when the weather is good, it expands through the garage doors to outdoor seating. And don’t forget the arcade room in back – kids of all ages like that feature! All the bread comes from the H-E-B bakery each morning – plus some of the vegetables. Hearty food,

television screens in two rooms and a full bar make this a great hang-out place. Patrick says the best part of being in that location is the crowds that come through the doors – from happy families to the businessmen’s lunch crowd. He enjoys engaging with the community. He collaborates with Black Rifle Coffee for the monthly block parties. The Clearys are great supporters of the Boerne Blaze and closes for a private gathering of a Wounded Warriors group. He honors all the sheriffs who have served in Kendall County with photos of them in the back blacksmith site. They are quick to support the various sports teams and first responders. When you go in, ask Patrick for a tour of the features of the historic building - and enjoy the burgers, Pat’s Famous “Philly” Cheesesteak sandwich and Tina’s Chicken Cheesesteak.

SPENCER POWELL AND HIS DAUGHTER QUINN SHARE A SPECIAL BOND
24
O UT D OOR A DV E N T U R E | LI F E + CULTURE
Balancing Work and Family Life Is Necessary June is always a special month because it includes the Father’s Day holiday. So many people are blessed with loving, caring fathers and four-year-old Quinn is just one of those daughters who can claim that existence. Spencer Powell started his business, Alamo Management Company when Quinn was three-months-old so initially it was challenging to have enough free time to spend with her. Spencer’s company is successful and has grown to fifty plus employees. Even though his work life is busy, he takes time to take Quinn to school at least twice a week and is home for a family dinner most nights. Once a month, they have a daddy/daughter date where they do something fun, whether going to Quinn’s favorite restaurant or feeding the ducks or playing tennis. Spencer explains, “I want to enjoy these moments and remember them when she grows up.” His wife, Jessie completes the beautiful family circle.
Alamo Management Group ended the year 2021 with a strong grip on the local HOA market, adding 30,000 homes to its management portfolio. Its unique approach to HOA management has proven to be the change that many HOA boards and developers have been seeking. This year AMG will boldly step into the Commercial Property Management industry. With over 35 years of combined experience in property management and fueled by a trusted reputation, the leadership team is confident in its ability to establish a favorable presence in commercial property management market. “As our company grows, so does our staff! Because we truly value our employees, we continuously evaluate how to improve the AMG work culture, all while encouraging our staff to maintain a healthy work life balance.”

Flashback Funtiques is a unique shop on Boerne’s Main Street featuring eclectic antiques that are fun - jukeboxes, barber’s chairs, Big Boy statues, pinball machines and other collectibles. Collector Billy Howard owns the store sharing homage to the past. There is something for everyone. How about a fortune teller machine or beer-brand clocks and tin signs? Howard started this lifetime passion when he was in middle school by dumpster diving to find treasures. Howard has been sharing his funtiques since 2012. He also helps repeat clients build their collections. Because Flashback Funtiques is a enjoyable place to sit and visit while relaxing with a beverage, we asked Howard for his favorite drink recipe. Enjoy making this drink and drop by the store and think back with nostalgia when you see some of the items on display. Check out their Facebook page.

Do you remember the vintage barbershops your fathers frequented when they needed a good shave and cut? Boerne boasts of just such a place where seven barbers offer great cuts. Nathan Heape, a former high school Math teacher learned the trade to keep up with his wife, a former chef and a trained barber. Katie is now stationed with the Border Mission in the National Guards until November. The couple has three daughters, in college and high school. Hauptstrasse Barbershop opened in 2016 when the Heapes moved to Boerne. The shop was located in a small space on North Main Street next door to Bumdoodler’s. They renovated the former thrift shop beside Blacksmith Grill and moved into the new location in July of 2021. In a modern wood and industrial design, the large black chairs are always filled with customers. With the open floor plan, the men enjoy conversations in this great meeting place to talk world events, how Boerne is changing, and boasting about their grandchildren. The barbershop offers products for sale, like El Squento pomades and beard oils. T-shirts and hats are sold as well, along with other hair and beard products. The Hauptstrasse Cigar Bar, owned with business partner Clay Smoot, is in the back with its own entrance door. The dimly lit room is just perfect to select cigars, sit, relax and enjoy a drink. It is a great hangout place that gets busy after-hours.
