A BOERNE SPRING symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmer’s markets are gearing up for a busy season of visitors to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers. There is a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery, or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. For our April issue, we wanted to share with you how some of our neighbors are getting out to explore both locally and globally. We would love to hear from you about your favorite hidden gems in town and your go-to travel destinations, so drop us line or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram. We hope that the destinations featured this month give you something to dream about visiting in the near future. Here is to a happy spring full of adventure and peace and sunshine.

Casa Alondra Fine Imports OFFERS BEAUTIFUL CLOTHING AND FURNISHINGS A new retailer has moved into the former liquor store on Main Street in Boerne! And, it carries beautiful Mexican imports – from hats to clothing to home furnishings and jewelry. The space is spacious and extremely colorful. Tanya Armenta set up the shop where the contrasting colors enhance each other and items are easy to find and try on. Arturo, Tanya’s husband is a second generation shop owner. One of the times I was visiting them, he was framing and hanging old photos of his father’s shop, Casa Blanca Gifts, in Nuevo Laredo. One featured the ribbon cutting with a very young Arturo in front and center. He explained that the Boerne store is named after his and Tanya’s daughter, Alondra. The family moved to Boerne last year because of the culture, the scenic area, the schools and the relaxed atmosphere. The items featured in the shop include works by jewelry designers, sculptors and artists. Go to the website for more information and be sure to visit the shop soon! www.casaalondaimports.com

Mission City Indian Motorcycle is a premier dealership that offers new and pre-owned motorcycles for all types of riders. The dealership has a wide selection of parts and accessories, along with Indian Motorcycle apparel so you can outfit yourself and your bike. Our gold certified service department and trained technicians work hand-in-hand with our customers to maintain their motorcycles, as well as assisting them with customization to create their perfect bike. Each rider has their own style, so we strive to capture a unique experience for each individual when they step into our showroom. Customer Jonathan Randolph states, "I’ve been riding motorcycles since 2010 and have always been a fan of Indian Motorcycle. When Indian Motorcycle opened in Boerne, I had to drive by, just to see the bikes in person. Once I came in, sat on a few models, that’s all it took. I knew I had to trade in my Harley-Davidson for one. I purchased an Indian Chieftain that day, and from there, became 100% a fan of Indian Motorcycle. I have since

owned an Indian Scout, Springfield Dark Horse, and currently own an FTR 1200 and a Challenger Dark Horse. I haven’t ridden another brand since. All of my Indian Motorcycle purchases have been made at Mission City Indian Motorcycle, due to the spectacular service I always receive. Whether I am buying a new bike, or getting services or upgrades installed, I am always treated like I’m buying a bike for the first time. The excitement, the courtesy I’m given is unlike any other experience I’ve had when purchasing a bike."
SPOTLIGHT MODELS The Scout celebrates 100 years! It is a great entry to the brand for all types of riders, including beginner. There are several models within the Scout lineup to choose from, depending on the rider and riding style. Another bike with a long history with Indian Motorcycle is the Chief. It was recently redesigned with updated technology and is popular with customers who want a classic bike with modern style. A newer model to the brand is the Challenger, featuring a liquid-cooled motor - a versatile bike - as well as a performance bagger. The touring version of the Challenger, the Pursuit, was released in February. It features a tour trunk, lower fairings, and new adjustable suspension technology. 28611 Interstate 10 W, Boerne, TX 78006 - missioncityindian.com

Alamo Springs Cafe IS WORTH THE SHORT ROAD TRIP! PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATE COOLEY/COOLEY PORTRAITS Alamo Springs Cafe is a beloved burger restaurant in Fredericksburg, Texas. Founded in 2006, our no-frills down-home food quickly drew the attention of burger lovers and weekend warriors looking for a meal off the beaten path. Originally an old saddle shop, the Alamo Springs Cafe building was purchased by the former owner and moved to the middle of nowhere to become a cafe and general store. But soon the burgers were outpacing everything else, and the general store was dropped in favor of serving all burgers, all the time. We’re located on the outskirts of Fredericksburg right next to Old Tunnel State Park, one of the most unique parks in Texas. The park houses an old railway tunnel that was abandoned in 1942. Since then, it has become home for more than three million Mexican free-tailed bats. Visit the park at sunset to watch them all fly out! Alamo Springs Cafe is owned and operated by restaurant industry veteran Brian O’Neill. He has managed major Austin restaurants like Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden, Uchi, Max’s Wine Dive, and Gus’s Fried Chicken. He may have fancy credentials, but he’s a good ol’ boy at heart. Stop by and introduce yourself! alamospringscafetx.com

KENDALL COUNTY PARKS
The Kendall County Parks system consists of three natural area parks and a community park that encompass 512 acres. https://www.kens5.com/article/life/three-parks-inthe-texas-hill-country/273-b1393ece-79f6-4a33-8dabe2b0d429cc17 Joshua Springs Park & Preserve encompasses 365 acres of rich Texas hill country terrain. The park currently includes a playground, numerous covered pavilions and picnic areas, grills, restrooms and water fountains. The park also includes a 9-hole disc golf course, 4 wildlife observation blinds, a 2-acre off-leash dog park and 9-miles of multi-use trails throughout the entire park. Additionally, an office building located near the park entrance serves as headquarters for the Kendall County Parks Department. A 9-acre lake fed by Little Joshua Creek serves as the park’s main source for water recreation and a prime fishing destination. The lake includes 2 fishing piers, a floating dock and kayak/canoe launching points. Joshua Springs Park & Preserve is also home to the Ring Mountain Event Center, located on the back portion of the park. James Kiehl River Bend Park encompasses 25 acres along the Guadalupe River and includes picnic areas, grills, benches, a wildlife observation blind, 1.5 miles of multi-use trails and multiple river access points. The park is a memorial park honoring a local army soldier, James Kiehl, who passed away during the Iraq War in 2003. Comfort Park encompasses 5 acres in a residential area located in the center of Comfort and includes a playground, basketball court, picnic areas, BBQ grills, restrooms and benches. The park also includes a covered pavilion, gazebo and a community center. Living in Boerne in the Texas Hill Country is really special; however, sometimes we need a change of Texas scenery. From hills and cedar to sand and surf, the Ayyads found just the right second home to enjoy when they need to feel the warm waters of the Gulf. Their realtor, Dana Kisel found an 1,100 square-foot bungalow built in the 1950s, surrounded by majestic oaks, and saw the potential. They are remodeling and replacing the roof, flooring, air conditioner and painting the outside with coastal colors of white and turquoise. Located in the heart of Fulton and two blocks from Aransas Bay, it is near restaurants and a seaside park in Fulton Harbor. The Ayyads are looking forward to spending time in their vacation spot, complete with fishing, water sports and fun in the sand. The four children, ranging in age from eight to three love the water. Sammy grew up near the water in Venezuela and is happy to get back to it. He is married and is a service director at Cavendar Toyota. An added benefit will be to lease the furnished house as an AirBnB when the family isn’t enjoying living in it. The expectation is that the home’s renovations will be completed in April. I might have to look into renting it for a long weekend! There are interesting sites in the area which are great for bird-watching as well as enjoying the Gulf breezes.

Visit Music City
Getaway to Nashville
and ‘Write Your Own Music City Story’
Write your own music story. That’s exactly what the chefs, artists, historians, musicians and impassioned locals of Nashville want visitors to do as they dive into this culturally diverse and oh-so-friendly city. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Music City to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this city rich in experiences that only Nashville can give. As the largest city in Tennessee, Nashville boasts an impressive array of destinations, including luxurious hotels such as the Sheraton Grand in the heart of downtown, Urban Cowboy, Noelle and The Hermitage Hotel, which houses the upscale restaurant Drusie and Darr, led by world-renowned chef Jean-Gorges. Come and enjoy a truly elevated dining experience that reflects the new era of Nashville. When ready to absorb the historic side of the city, the centuries-old landmark and winery, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, offers guests “historic tours, family tours, wine and food pairings, bourbon tastings and chef-inspired food and wine pairings” that are unparalleled in their local experience. Likewise, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery carries an incredible story of origination and bottles a remarkable 1860 family recipe that made Tennessee Whiskey world famous. Let’s talk about one of the most anticipated—the food scene! Three things Nashville is known for are hot chicken, barbecue, and meat & three restaurants. Nashville has amassed a lot of attention over the last 10 years for its exquisite food scene, with

several James Beard award-winning chefs and an incredible independent restaurant scene. People know how good the food scene is, but if they really want to find those independent chef-driven restaurants like Rolf and Daughters, FOLK, Bastion, Locust, or Henrietta Red, these are the chefs that garner a lot of attention that you won’t want to miss. For the art lovers at heart, Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, streets art, public art, art galleries and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings. Music history venues such as the new National Museum of African American Music will complement your old favorite Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, and Grand Ole Opry experiences. According to @visitmusiccity, “Everyone should do the Grand Ole Opry one night; it’s not just about the music, it’s a piece of history and the world’s longest running radio show.” Last but not least is the music scene. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, honky tonk, rock, symphony or quite literally any genre of music imaginable, Nashville has it all. Spend one night on Broadway hopping bar to bar, sit orchestra-side at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, tour and take in a show at the 130-year-old Ryman Auditorium, then experience a songwriter’s night at The Bluebird or The Listening Room Cafe. The music is different every night everywhere, so one is best served by referring to visitmusiccity.com for their Upcoming Concerts Calendar to soak up all the magnificent sounds.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL Rotary is the largest international service organization in the world with members donating their time and talents to worldwide causes. There are many chapters in our area; however, I spoke with Leigh Owen, President of the Boerne Noon Rotary to get some background information about international philanthropy projects. One of the Noon Rotary members, Rob Bradley, provides dental services in South American projects. The San Antonio and Hill Country chapters collaborate on Shelter Boxes that go to various countries after a natural disaster such as the recent one in Haiti. A Fair Oaks Ranch chapter member supports an eye vision program in Mexico City. International Rotary champions large programs such as the eradication of polio; today there are less than 100 cases. That is one of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s program. The area
chapters held a Pints for Polio event at Random a couple of years ago to further the cause. Many local projects are administered on a regular basis: 100 trees planted at Boerne City Lake five years ago; donations of cash and peanut butter monthly to Blessings in a Backpack; heaters for seniors on the Meals on Wheels program; donations of canned goods to Hill Country Family Services’ pantry; four scholarships for graduating seniors; small building projects like ramps for senior housing; Breakfast with Santa for the Roy Maas residents; and free meals programs for Boerne ISD underserved students. Be sure to check out Boerne Noon Rotary Club’s social media and website (both International and Chapters) for fundraising events and ongoing programs. Congratulations to the chapter for the Chamber’s Nonprofit of the Year award! The Boerne Rotary 2022 Casino Night Fundraiser will be held on April 9 at Kronkosky Place. www.boernerotary.org/
