BOERNE, make sure to have flowers and candy on speed dial for Valentine's Day! Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers, and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents, and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers, and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community.

Unique Desserts PUDDIN’ IT OUT THERE

ARTICLE BY CONNIE MCFALL CLARK PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATE COOLEY/ COOLEY PORTRAITS

If you haven’t run across the Puddin’ it out there food truck in Boerne, I suggest you look for it! Owner Krystal Martinez and husband Adam opened the business in July 2021 offering forty varieties of puddings that are fabulous-tasting and a perfect snack or dessert. On a given week she offers five flavors. The most popular are the chocolate creations. Krystal loves the banana pudding creations and worked on a recipe that was thicker and fluffier than regular pudding. I know first-hand that it is indescribably delicious! Puddin’ it out there offers catering services for events. For 2022, Krystal is working on adding bread puddings and collaborating with local businesses to incorporate the puddings into other food items. On weekends you can find Puddin’ it out there at Herff Farmers Market and Boerne Market Days. They also set up during the week at the Legacy at Cibolo Apartments at 701 Oak Park Drive and United Texas Bank at 1440 S Main Street. Follow them on Facebook. Enjoy! OFFERS GIRL WITH GRIT AND ENTREPRENEURS PROGRAMS

ARTICLE BY CONNIE MCFALL CLARK PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATE COOLEY/COOLEY PORTRAITS

Girl With Grit was created in 2021 by Blythe Zemel with the assistance and hard work of her friends, Briana Huhn and Ashley Robertson. After a wonderful and challenging year, because of the overwhelming increase of boys and young men joining in the activities and classes started for girls and young women, Blythe was encouraged to change the facility name to Come and Make It! “Girl With Grit continues to be a girl-centered program run in the current facility on South Main in Boerne and with mobile workshop programs serving at-risk women and girls. However, we wanted boys to know they are welcome to attend classes also, since we get that question so much,” explains Blythe. Come And Make It! better describes the vision Blythe strives to achieve. “We offer a space to give young people the skills to become strong adults with great life skills. Makerspace is a place where people create and learn to make things.” The classes offer everything from art to welding to entrepreneurship. An Entrepreneurs Program takes the students out to markets. Classes and workshops are opened first to members, then on a first-come first-serve basis to the public. Classes in welding, skateboard design, 3D printing, photography, jewelry creation have been offered, plus the participants are encouraged to bring their talents to Makerspace to share their unique and varied creations. An artist, Blythe felt she was categorized into a box instead of an open arena. She felt her art could be directed into strong tools for learning life skills – even with a brush and paint. Teaching art education for fine arts and photography she also felt the need to use a screwdriver to become self-sufficient. Driving and fixing a flat tire was not available in public education. She moved off the beaten path in her art program and talked about life skills. She gained national recognition in the auto industry with her photography as she bought and is refurbishing a 1934 Chevy truck. She is bridging the gap from sewing to paint to tools. She created a line of safety glasses for women with cat eye shapes that have become popular as women move out of traditional roles. As a teacher Blythe promoted the arts and trades as a place to belong, to excel. She developed life skills and is a “jack of all trades”. And so the next generation of children are exposed to a variety of learning opportunities: from airbrush painting to welding to making crafts – everything is a possibility. There are demonstrations, open studio time and access to tools at Makerspace. Special needs adults as well as children as young as 3-years-old can learn crafts and life skills that will make them productive and self-sufficient. Go to https://girlwithgrit.com/ for more information and to register for classes. CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / BO E R N E

“In life we are either givers or takers. We have been very blessed in life, and it is a critical part of our culture and company credo to give back to the community, those in need, and those who serve.”

Since opening Tusculum Brewing Company in the former Bergmann Lumber Store on Main Street, Paige and Tripp Mathews, Operating Partners, have created a space where the community can gather for events, to exchange ideas, hold meetings or be in celebration. The additional ownership team of four and with Tommy Mathews as Managing Partner has made that vision a reality. With the building being over 110 years old there were plenty of opportunities to show it some much needed love and restoration. Our primary goal when starting was to restore the main floor ceilings to their original elegance and to create a pallet for future improvements and enhancements. With the addition of our BierGarten spaces in back, we have met most of our goals for the space. Our long-term goals have the interior space evolving into more elegant finishes, becoming an area with blended elements of dining/gathering, beer/wine service, and local specialty retail. COVID made that difficult in 2020, but over the course of 2021 we have been able to live into that goal of community. In a world dominated by instant messaging, conflict, and rhetoric it is our hope that by providing a welcoming space we can in some small way make a positive difference. In life we are either givers or takers. We have been very blessed in life, and it is a critical part of our culture and company credo to give back to the community, those in need, and those who serve. In 2022, Boerne Radio will be broadcasting from Tusculum. Tommy Mathews was introduced to Baron

24

H AP PY H OU R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

and Shan Wiley through mutual acquaintances. Their initial conversations about Tusculum’s goals, to be a place for community conversations, resonated and fit within Boerne Radio’s community-centric focus and a strong chemistry was formed. Mathews and the Wileys soon began exploring the possibility for the radio station to set up shop and broadcast from Tusculum. Design plans are underway to make that unique opportunity an exciting reality in 2022. We have some new IPAs coming out soon and our Lucky 13 stout will be returning to the taps. Tripp and I usually come up with the names with the help of our production team, friends, and family. It is a fun process but it can sometimes be hard to come up with something funny or cool. Tripp and I started dating in 2013 after we met while attending Texas State University and then got married in 2015. Our space and our business continues to be ever-evolving and we hope for exciting new changes in the new year but we don't have specific details. The upstairs space consists of two main areas. Roughly half of the space is a living area where the H.O. Adler family, who built the building, resided for many years. The balance of the space is a large open rustic warehouse. Restoration of the former residential areas has begun, as plans for the balance of the space are being finalized. The goal is to create a blend of professional offices, meeting/gathering space, and an exciting, but yet to be announced opportunity. Stay tuned!

Lifestyle is often derived from taking thoughts and dreams, working hard … turning them into reality. And sometimes, when you least expect it, change happens. The cool thing … most often the change that occurs leads you down unexpected paths that convert to fruitfulness in ways you couldn’t have imagined. Well, that’s MY story and I’m sticking to it! In August 2015, my husband Jeff and I moved from Fair Oaks Ranch to Rockport … chasing the dream of living near the water. After spending twenty-five years in healthcare management, I took the plunge and followed Jeff to the Gulf Coast to move into the territory he managed from afar for twenty years. Being familiar with Rockport community needs, there was a call to open a restaurant, bakery/bistro style. Our doors opened April 2017, four months before Hurricane Harvey. Following Harvey, we remained open through December 2018. Afterwards, I immersed myself into our community to contribute toward local recovery. Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce offered an in-depth look at community needs through participation in Leadership Aransas County. Our team, Class XXII, made significant legacy economic development, community and environmental program contributions. The following year I served as Leader, Class XXIIl. Those experiences catapulted me to my next venture … assisting those exploring RockportFulton and coastal property ownership … Real Estate! Since becoming a realtor, I have conducted real estate transactions with awesome folks from England, Kansas, Colorado, Florida, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, California, Louisiana

and Texas cities of Austin, Arlington, San Antonio, Houston, College Station, Kemah, Medina and Boerne - just to name a few! AMAZING to me is how many folks are working toward owning property on or near the water’s edge. I thrive on how I can best impact dreams of leisure walks on the beach, fishing in the bays, boating, birding, sunset watching, strolling art galleries and enjoying family and friends in a rejuvenating environment. By listening to particulars of timing, finance, and other dynamics, I diligently work to produce options into acquisitions. Understanding a client’s specific goals helps me convert dreams into reality, whether searching for a primary residence, second home or investment. My 2022 goal is to showcase Rockport via a REAL TOUR with a REALTOR® every Friday afternoon for folks desiring a closer look at falling in love with seaside living. A client was so kind to share her recent experience, ”I knew I was gonna like you when you stepped out of your orange Jeep with those cowboy boots lookin’ all Texan. You are so much more than a real estate agent, although I know that is where we started. Thank you for your hard work. Thank you for guiding us and being patient; for being professional and so thorough. You have literally brought me home. Thank you.” To take a REAL TOUR with a REALTOR ® Contact Dana @ 210.439.9937 or juxthekey@gmail.com. Property Tours Every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. or 3 to 5 p.m. MUST PRE-REGISTER … Limited Space Available for Each Tour!! LOOK FOR THE ORANGE JEEP at 1798 Bay Shore, Rockport 78382.

The Red Barn is a multi-functional space for larger events.

HCCArts has been around for many years and has birthed cultural organizations in Kendall County. Board members Paula Horner and Rob Ziegler worked with the Director of The AgriCultural Kristy Watson McNelly, the City, County and Director of the Majestic Ranch Arts Foundation to acquire a lease on the property a few years ago. The farm equipment and buildings remained in place to offer an agricultural history for the County. The largest building, pictured here, is perfect for special events.

The AgriCultural continues to open its gates to events like Boerne Bierfest, art exhibits, tractor pulls, festivals and the twice-monthly Bluegrass music circles. Boerne Performing Arts’ “For Kids” Program An Important Partnership with BISD ARTICLE BY CAROL SCHULTZ

Part of Boerne Performing Arts’ mission statement states “educating through student outreach programs”. Each artist who performs an evening concert in Champion Auditorium commits to presenting a fifty-minute outreach program for students in BISD at absolutely no cost to the student. For many students, this is the first time they have attended a live performance of any kind. The 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th grade students are the main attendees as these are the years that they are participating or thinking

34

about participating in choral and instrumental programs at school. Lesson plans about the type of performance the students are about to attend are presented prior and after the concert in their classrooms. These outreach concerts are so very different from the evening performances. First of all, the energy and excitement of elementary students is much higher than an adult audience. Secondly, the artists go to great lengths to engage and include the students in the entire experience.
