Breakfast For Dinner? SURPRISE THE KIDS!

ARTICLE CRYSTAL HENRY/THE BASIC PITCH PHOTOGRAPHY CRYSTAL HENRY

YOU CAN PUT EGGS AND BACON ON PASTA AND IT’S CALLED CARBONARA. But no pasta and all of a sudden you’re eating breakfast for dinner. As a kid, breakfast for dinner was a safe way to break the rules. Scarfing pancakes after 11 a.m. feels almost dangerous and daring. But in reality it’s often the result of a forgone trip to the grocery store or sheer exhaustion from the chef on duty that night. An upscale brinner is a smorgasbord complete with orange juice, eggs, bacon, fruit, pancakes or even French toast. The Wednesday night warrior is a bowl of cold cereal on the couch. The novelty of inviting breakfast foods outside morning hours isn’t reserved just for dinnertime. Brunch is the elegant upscale cousin of the more mischievous brinner. But it’s the simple act of turning routine on its head that makes those dishes taste different. There are no restrictions on when to merge a waffle mountain with your menu, Violet Henry enjoying breakfast foods at dinnertime

pamper your pets with healthy alternatives FETCH & FRISKERS IS YOUR SOURCE FOR ALL YOUR DOG AND CAT NEEDS IN BOERNE. It is a woman-owned Christian business excited to celebrate its tenth birthday on December 15th this year. The shop is proud to be petfriendly and the sales associates thoroughly enjoy it when people bring their fur-babies in to shop with them. Fetch & Friskers offers fresh-baked, all-natural, humangrade pet treats – baked in small batches in the store. All the treats have been approved and are certified by the state of Texas. We offer decorated cookies for birthdays and also have seasonal themed cookies that change each month. In addition, we offer Pupcakes for your pups’ special occasion or birthday. Although it may look small from the outside, Fetch & Friskers has a large variety of items for all your dog or cat’s needs. Roaming the interior of the shop's multiple rooms is an adventure. The shelves of products offer the highest quality frozen, freeze-dried and traditional kibble dog and cat foods. We specialize in stocking durable but fun dog toys.

There is a large selection of collars, leashes, harnesses and pet apparel - as well as high quality pet beds that won’t fall apart when laundered. Costume your pet in your favorite sports team attire. Those tiny outfits are the cutest! As you walk through the store you will notice that the variety of products (especially food and treats) we carry are not found in your typical large box pet store. Check out their Facebook page and the shop on Main Street at Hosack. And why not create a fun piece of art made exclusively by your pet? Here's a great activity you can share with your pet of any kind. A COMPLEX SUBJECT

ARTICLE TAMARA PAGE

AS A LICENSED FINANCIAL ADVISOR, ONE OF THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS I GET IS, “WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO INVEST FOR MY CHILD’S FUTURE?” The resulting conversation ordinarily results in the establishment of either a 529 college savings account, a Uniform Gift to Minors Act account (UGMA), or a combination of both. A UGMA/UTMA account is owned by the child but controlled by the custodian. The funds deposited are gifted irrevocably to the child and cannot be reversed. Taxes are paid on earnings annually with some “Kiddie Tax” benefits. Investment choices are not restricted and the use of funds is not limited. Control of the account shifts to the child when he/she reaches the age of majority. The funds in these accounts can reduce the child’s college financial aide eligibility by up to 20% of the account value. This type of account is also beneficial if used for non-educational expenses.

YOUNG BUSINESS OWNERS AT THE BOERNE TRADING COMPANY NEW SHOP OFFERS A VARIETY OF GOODS

Bristol/Blankenship Soap Co.

THE

BOERNE

COMPANY

OPENED IN JUNE ON MAIN STREET AND IS HOME TO SEVERAL COMPANIES. What I found most interesting is that Jennifer Blankenship who co-owns the store with Brad Dickey provides an area for young entrepreneurs to sell their products. After Jennifer’s daughter, Bristol, couldn’t get her business placed in other shops, the bright idea was implemented. The children business owners pay for booth space and a percentage of the utilities as well as getting a DBA or LLC with a sales tax permit like all businesses. They are required to set up and decorate their space as well as replenish stock to keep up with sales. Bristol makes glycerin and goat milkbased soaps using oils for fragrance. She gets her Mediterranean Sea colored bath salts from an outside company but experiments with adding coconut oil and a variety of scents. Bristol began her business to buy a synthesizer that her mother said she had to help pay for. “I find it fun to make soap and Mallory/Mallory's Boutique

Mallory opened Mallory’s Boutique offering an array of

button glitter studs and leather earrings. “I always wanted

to create earrings and I love fashion and jewelry. I thought it would be kind of fun to sell in a store so people could see them. It is exciting to run my own boutique!” She has been successful with sales and offers a variety of designs with and without bling. Her leather earrings are unique in that she uses a double sided material. Ryleigh’s display is Angels From The Sea. She explains, “My mom, brother and I saw tiny Coquina shells at the beach and talked about how they look like angel wings. Mom said that must be a sign from Aunt Rachel that she was with us since she loved the beach.” They hope to offer comfort to others experiencing loss with the angel wings. The paperweights, charms and key chains contain these angel wings. New stock will also have sand incorporated into the designs.

Quinn/Wildrye

Last Resort Designs features the works of Ty, Makenna and Shane who live on the Last Resort Ranch. “As soon as we could hold a tool, we were taught the art of sewing, quilting and woodworking.” These brothers and sister display a beautiful array of quilts, wooden art and containers, soap, hand towels, socks and doll blankets. Quinn, a sixteen-year-old is with Wildrye, a grass fed beef ranch. His display offers camo insulated coolers, baskets, caps and other items for the outdoors. The brand was created to inspire others to connect with the land. The family passionately merges their ranch with the outdoors. Their goal is “to provide a synergistic respect for the animals and the land.” The Boerne Trading Company has a Facebook page. Ryleigh/Angels From The Sea

Upon moving to Kendall County in 2018, I discovered many others with the same passion. With strategic relationships built in her medical work with survivors and others in the movement to end trafficking, along with strong community will and leadership in Boerne and neighboring communities The Retreat Home For Children was launched in June 2020. Our story is the story of a community reaching out to the broken-hearted, the weak and weary, and the one who feels forgotten in order to bring hope and healing for a new life free from violence and exploitation. The story of The Retreat reflects God's story to all of us in Psalm 119:114: “You are my place of quiet retreat. I wait for your word to renew me.” It’s happening here, not just across borders. Studies have been unable to get a true account of how many children worldwide have been exploited. This is because many cases are never reported, or even noticed. Because of this, many children suffer for long periods of time, facing harsh conditions, lack of food and clean water, dirty living conditions, lack of contact with their families, and physical and mental abuse. The harsh reality is that young girls are being sex trafficked across all socio-economic, racial,

Talented and experienced in the area of fashion, 23-year-old Amber enjoys being the co-proprietor and arranging the displays to grab attention and offer a comfortable, roomy area in which to shop. She assesses the donations and determines if they are saleable or need to be donated elsewhere. Amber has an eye for quality clothing and accessories and it shows in the items offered for sale. “We are blessed to have many high-quality, like-new items donated on a regular basis. We are able to offer expensive name brands you’d find at Neiman’s or Saks for a quarter of the price,” explains Jackie. We’ll see what the future holds for Amber; whether she uses her business experience to branch out in another venture or continue to keep Amber’s Closet open. Either way, Jackie is hoping that, “Amber will be able to get work in the future.” Many parents with special needs adults are seeking the same assurances and have come to Jackie for advice. As we were conducting our interview, a young man came in to meet Amber and expressed his gratitude and congratulated her and Jackie for their venture. “So many times businesses overlook special needs people and the good they can provide in the world.”
