Our businesses at 153 Main Street are becoming more successful and we have finished the set up (building the structure, hiring our central team and creating a basic theme). My ultimate goal is always a moving target. What has helped us move this project forward is being flexible and always coming up with new ideas. Opening the restaurant during the pandemic made us think outside the box most of the time and what we thought it was going to look like when we started isn’t what came to fruition. Having a great partner and team is the best. Every time Guy and I disagreed on a design or plan it made the outcome better. Our team of managers is incredibly creative, hardworking and open to new ideas. Becoming part of the Boerne community is the fun part of my work. Working with our good friends at the Chamber, HCWIB and EDC has made us! Working with other businesses in Boerne has been great and I really feel like the saying “a rising tide raises all boats” is true. “ONE THING I LOVE ABOUT AGING — AND I DO LOVE AGING — I’VE GOT A WISDOM THAT NO YOUNG PERSON CAN BUY. You earn it.” - Suzanne Somers
“THERE ARE DAYS WHEN I WISH I HAD THE 21-YEAR-OLD BERNIE BODY AND LESS WRINKLES ... HOWEVER THE 56-YEAR-OLD BERNIE HAS LEARNED THAT BEAUTY STARTS FROM THE INSIDE. I HAVE A CHARACTER NOSE, CURLS THAT DO AS THEY PLEASE AND CURVES. SO I JUST TRY TO ENJOY LIFE TO THE FULLEST, ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVES, EMBRACE THE IMPERFECTIONS AND NOT BE SO HARD ON MYSELF. “
Did you know women over 40 account for more than 25% of America’s total population?* Beauty doesn’t diminish with age - it evolves. There’s incredible value in climbing life’s mountains, being comfortable in your skin, and learning from your mistakes. Culture may tell you that attractiveness has an expiration date, but we think it’s time to revolutionize the beauty standard. Women over 40 are significantly underrepresented in media, and we want to fix that. Cooley Portraits is seeking to photograph 40 Women Over 40 this year, and we would love for you to be one of our models. In the 40 Over 40 Project, we aim to celebrate the beauty of aging through stylized depictions of our models’ unique femininity and strength. Our luxurious photo shoot experience and gallery exhibition is designed to help women of all ages learn to embrace themselves exactly as they are. Join us on this adventure to transform the definition of beauty. All women over 40 are invited - your shape, size, style, and age are the brushstrokes that make you a masterpiece. The Cooley Portraits experience is custom tailored to YOU, and our professional glam squad will be completely available to prep you for your portrait. This is your chance to leave a mark, to represent a stage of life filled with grace and freedom. Women 40, 50, and 60+ are welcome with open arms. Want more details? W WHAT WOULD YOU INSPIRED BY
TELL YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
THREE BOERNE WOMEN SHARE THEIR WISE WORDS
KIRSTEN COHOON, 451ST DISTRICT COURT JUDGE As a child, we moved constantly. I would tell my younger self not to dread each move. Make new friends and keep in touch with those friends when you move again. I would stress that you do not need to look to others for approval; you are good enough. I would try to convince myself to find a church home with each new move and get connected. I would remind myself that life is bigger than right now. Study hard and have fun - preferably in that order! Kirsten Cohoon

WISE WORDS AMY STORY, PRESIDENT/CEO, BKCEDC
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Focus on the big picture. Don’t give minor irritations more weight than they deserve. Do things outside of your comfort zone. It provides a great sense of accomplishment to push yourself to do something you thought impossible. Align yourself with people who bring out the best in you and them. They will hold you accountable and are the ones who will be there through good times and bad. Always have a Plan B. Don’t focus on regret, but on the future. Every experience helps shape you into the person you become. Do the best that you can do.
Amy Story
Nicole Bishop
NICOLE BISHOP, DISTRICT ATTORNEY You don’t know everything and you can be wrong. Seek out the opinion of others. Learn to take criticism. Receive it, consider it and, if necessary, adjust accordingly. If you can’t admit your mistakes, you’ll keep making them. In all relationships, be yourself and set boundaries. Never compromise yourself for the approval, acceptance or love of others. When people dismiss, disrespect, or mistreat you, it says more about them than you. Stay firm in who you are, treat them with grace, and move on. Finally, God really does have a plan for you, and your determination, honesty, faith, and kindness will keep you on the right path.

LOCALLY OWNED HELPFUL TIPS FROM HILL COUNTRY AFRICAN VIOLETS AND NURSERY
EVEN WITH THE ICY WEATHER IN FEBRUARY ACROSS TEXAS, WE CAN STILL EXPECT SOME PRETTY BLOOMS IN THE NEXT MONTH OR SO AT AREA NURSERIES. Spring is here and Lori Hawkins, the Manager at Hill Country African Violets and Nursery
f lowers ready to plant in may
provided a list of plants that can be planted in May. SUN-LOVING PLANTS: Plumbago This plant has beautiful dark blue or white flowers on a large shrub of 3 to 5 feet. This tends to freeze down in winter and comes back from roots in the spring. Hibiscus The tropical variety will not survive the winters so move those pots inside. The plant can get up to 5 feet tall and there are many different colors and varieties. The perennial varieties will freeze to the ground but come back in the spring. We carry Moy Grande known as the dinner plate hibiscus in red. The Texas star hibiscus has beautiful flowers in red or white.
Vinca/Periwinkle This plant comes in upright or trailing varieties. There are many colors to choose from: lavender, white with red center, peach, white and red pink to strawberry.
This colorful foliage can be planted in baskets and pots, not the ground. Colors include orange, pink, purple, white, red, tangerine and fuschia to name a few.
Sages There are many varieties of sage. The Texas sage is a shrub that has beautiful lavender flowers. Bees love these

flowers. They usually bloom around the time it rains. Henry Duelberg variety is a smaller bush 18 to 20 inches tall with blue stalks of blooms. Russian Sage is a tall silver lacey foliage with light blue flower spikes and grows to 4 feet tall.
Butterfly Weed
Deer tend to stay away from most of the sages.
This 3-to 4-foot bush is a must for monarch lovers. Monarchs feed on the leaves before making their cocoon, usually on or close to the plant. It has beautiful orange and yellow flowers.
Salvia Leucantha/Mexican Bush Sage This blooms later in the summer but very showy with tall purple stalks that look almost furry on the gray/green velvety bush. Salvia Greggie comes in

Facebook Groups and Book Clubs A GREAT WAY FOR WOMEN TO CONNECT AND SHARE
THE HILL COUNTRY WOMEN'S GROUP WAS CREATED IN 2018 BY SHAWNA HOLLY OF CIBOLO CREATIVE MEDIA CO. to provide a place for women from the Hill Country and greater San Antonio areas to meet new friends, network, and support small businesses and non-profit organizations in our community. Since then, the group has grown to over 1200 members and each month, a small portion of them meet to participate in various activities and events in and around Boerne; supporting a new small business each month and a new non-profit each quarter. With no dues or applications, joining is commitment-free and easy. Our Hill Country Women's Group consists of members of our wonderful Texas Hill Country community who come from all stages and walks of life. We have small business owners, florists, nurses, therapists, baristas, teachers, stay-at-home-moms, lawyers, social workers, artists, marketing experts, accountants, retirees, and more. See hillcountrywomensgroup.com/giving-back for details. TAMMY JORDAN, AN ASSOCIATE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AT MONAT GLOBAL started a book club to bring women together that were interested in community, self-improvement and professional development. We met once a week, on Monday mornings, for about an hour - hour and a half. I started with choosing the book that we would read and then, eventually, asked for recommendations from other members.
