start your healthy lifestyle than the beginning of a new year surrounded by such wonderful and caring people? Before we jump into all the amazing ways, we can be proactive about our health, I’d like to take the time to introduce myself. 2021 is particularly special to me. It is the start of my journey, as publisher of Boerne Lifestyle, and I am excited to continue in Robynn’s footsteps. Boerne has been a place my relatives have called home since 1931. It represents a safe haven for all my loved ones, close and afar. The opportunity to represent our town— with help from the original team and a handful of new talent— is a great honor for me.

Medical researchers discovered it in the 1990s and it has three components: receptors, enzymes, and endocannabinoids. It has been called one the most important physiological systems that exists, simply for the fact that it influences so many functions in the body and mind. From our mood, sleep, pain perception, digestive function, reproductive function, inflammation and more, the ECS is directly responsible for helping

estes audiology hearing centers - boerne IF YOU THINK YOU NEED A HEARING TEST, YOU PROBABLY DO! A thorough assessment can provide a diagnosis of current hearing status in addition to a baseline for future testing. A good starting point would be the three-minute hearing assessment on our website, hearlifeagain.com, or a consultation with one of us. Bottom line: It’s never too soon to get a hearing test - don't wait. The sooner we can diagnose your type of hearing loss, the sooner we can begin treatment and help you Hear Life Again! DR. I earned my Doctor of Audiology from The University of Texas at Dallas. After the birth of our oldest son, my husband and I moved back to Boerne to be nearer to family. We have added two more boys to the bunch since then and are so blessed to be able to raise them here. I’ve always been fascinated by ears and Deaf culture. As an undergraduate student I discovered Audiology; the way it blends science and technology with the more subjective emotional experience of hearing loss. I was hooked! I want to know about hearing needs and frustrations - the ways hearing loss is affecting relationships and impacting quality of life. Knowing these things helps me tailor a solution in a more holistic way to help people Hear Life Again. INTRODUCING DR. BESCHONER: I live in Boerne with my husband and two children, Ellie, 6, and Liam, 3. I grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Clark High School. During my undergraduate studies at Abilene Christian University, I felt a calling to switch majors to Audiology. I graduated from the University of North Texas with my Doctor of Audiology. their quality of life. I also love the diversity

of people that I work with. I am contracted with the San Antonio Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide veteran services. I grew up in a military family and have a passion to help serve this population. Each year Estes Audiology gives away a set of hearing devices to one deserving community member through our Gift of Hearing program. These individuals exemplify the holiday spirit, demonstrate extraordinary kindness, and give back to their community. A panel of community leaders select the winner based on need and community impact. Our Boerne area Gift of Hearing recipient is Tim O’Brien.

Dr. John C. Maxwell

Leaders like you become catalysts for change when they do three things: pick a problem to address, invite others to join

people to a cause that you aren’t willing to own, especially these don’t respect it. When you pick a problem to solve or a cause to rally around, you must have conviction in order to succeed. Over the years, I’ve learned that whenever I feel a sense of conviction about an issue, I need to start moving in the direction I believe I should go, even if I’m uncertain. Action creates ownership, and ownership creates credibility with people. And you need that credibility because transformation cannot be done by one person alone—we all need people to join us on the journey. CONTINUED >

29

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

2. Invite Others to Join You When you’ve settled on the problem you want to tackle you should immediately begin looking for others to join you. In the book, Rob and I recommend starting with friends and family; you already have influence with them, and chances are you’re of like mind in many areas. Go to those family members who frequently ask you for advice or seek your opinion on personal matters, as you likely have greater influence with them. To move beyond family, however, you’ll need to take a leap of faith and begin sharing your passion for solving the problem with other people. Passion attracts, and when people come to you with interest, don’t be afraid to ask them what they think or invite them to improve your ideas. Empowering people to help you creates a bond, and once that bond is established, you will quickly discover who you can truly work with and invite them to take action with you.

3. Do What You Can Where You Are Action is the final step. It doesn’t have to be big or grand; it doesn’t even have to be guaranteed of success. Nothing happens in life until someone does something, and once you take your first step, the next step will come into focus. Remember that transformation is a process, not an event. It takes time and repeated action to bring about positive change. So focus on purpose, not perfection, and do what you know to do. These three steps may seem too simple, but I assure you they work. The goal of all transformational movements is making things better however possible. Incremental change is better than the status quo; and when you’re truly committed to making your community a better place, you know that any improvement is a significant improvement.
