LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy New Year!
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Jon Virtue | jon.virtue@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Keisha Virtue | keisha.virtue@citylifestyle.com
For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of City Lifestyle Boca Raton from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

The BENEFIT S of plantbased
E ATING

Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients.
You do not have to give up meat entirely, and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which means you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meat but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet! THE COLOR OF PLANT-BASED FOODS IS OFTEN AN INDICATOR OF THE VITAMINS AND MINERALS THEY CONTAIN. SO, MORE COLORS MEAN MORE NUTRIENTS.
18
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S
TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY: 1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder to stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like. 2. Plant-based diet does not mean boring. You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat-free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots, and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low b12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin b12. 6. A meat-free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life. Dr. Bauman doing a consult with Dave Asprey of Bulletproof
As we welcome the new year, many of us are already thinking about our goals. What do we want to do differently? What do we want to accomplish? Usually pretty high up on anyone’s list is looking and feeling good. Perhaps we plan to diet, work out, or both. But as we get older, it can be harder to look our best. For many of us, our hair starts to thin, our hairline recedes, or we may even start seeing bald spots. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, roughly 80 million Americans (50 million men and 30 million women) suffer from androgenetic alopecia – or hereditary hair loss related to genetics and hormones. That’s almost 40% of all adults in the United States. To cater to the millions of men and women losing their hair every year, a plethora of products – topicals, pills, shampoos – have popped up. We’re all familiar with Rogaine and Propecia, and now there are
newer options including Nutrafol, Vegamour and Keeps. But how does one choose from such a dizzying array of options? Enter Dr. Bauman and his renowned Boca Raton clinic, a 12,000 square foot, state-ofthe-art “Hair Hospital” in downtown Boca Raton. Despite the moniker, the building doesn’t feel at all like a clinic. Visitors enter an airy, modern two-story lobby, sprinkled with artwork. Patients coming in for surgery are admitted through a private elevator, and there are lounge areas with laser machines and coffee. Dr. Alan Bauman is a board-certified hair restoration physician who has treated over 33,000 patients and performed over 12,000 hair transplant procedures and over 12,000 PRP’s since starting his medical hair loss practice, Bauman Medical in 1997. He is one of roughly 200 physicians worldwide
to achieve certification from the American and International Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) and was voted “#1 Top Hair Restoration Surgeon” in North America by Aesthetic Everything for the 6th consecutive year, as well as “Top Hair Restoration Surgeon of the Decade”. Dr. Bauman has been a guest speaker at numerous international scientific meetings and live surgery workshops and has been featured in hundreds of news stories in the media. He has also appeared on shows including ABC Good Morning America, CNN, The Doctors, Bulletproof Radio with Dave Asprey. Dr. Bauman is also an enthusiastic proponent of biohacking – which is where people “hack” their own bodies with a mixture of scientific concepts, tools and technology in order to achieve longer life, better health and improved performance. While biohacking

can involve intricate technology like the Oura ring or genetic profiling, it can also involve simple practices like intermittent fasting, meditation and herbal supplements. Dr. Bauman brings this passion for high-tech improvement to hair loss treatment, investing in cutting-edge innovations including AI hair analysis, Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy (PRP) , Transepidermal Delivery (TED) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), which extracts and transplants individual hair follicles for a more natural look. After consultation, patients go through an evaluation with the help of a scalp microscope like a HairCam or a scientific tool like a HairCheck trichometer that measures hair quantity and quality. After determining the condition and the likely causes, Dr. Bauman proposes a bespoke treatment plan. We got to sit down with Dr. Bauman to get a peek at the man behind this cutting-edge practice.
WHAT WAS YOUR MOTIVATION IN BECOMING HAIR RESTORATION SPECIALIST? I never dreamed when I was younger that I was going to become a hair surgeon. I had a unique opportunity to become mentored by a very prominent plastic surgeon on the upper East side of Manhattan when I was a teenager. And so I always thought that that's what I was going to do. But many years later, during my internship in residency, I had met a hair transplant patient and I was completely fooled, unable to tell that he had had a hair transplant. In the 90s, hair transplantation wasn’t as sophisticated. It was usually very obvious and “pluggy”. His transplant looked amazing, and he
was totally thrilled that he fooled the surgeon. I was enthralled that the technology seemed to be progressing. And so I kind of kept that in the back of my mind. Over the years, I looked into hair transplant; I read journals and textbooks, visited physicians and attended conferences. And eventually I found my next mentor who was a hair surgeon. And once I got into the world of hair transplant, I basically just diverted completely from plastic surgery and just made that the one thing.
FOR SOMEONE WHO'S CONCERNED ABOUT HAIR LOSS, WHAT DOES THE HAIR RESTORATION JOURNEY LOOK LIKE? Well, unfortunately, for most who are struggling with hair loss, sometimes they don't even know where to go or what to do. And there's a lot of confusion out there. They may ask their hair stylist, for example. I seem to be shedding more. I seem to have less coverage. What's going on up there? Or they may turn to a physician like a dermatologist or their primary care doctor, but those folks don't have any way to measure what's going on, and they're not focused on hair loss, so there's no real keen interest in getting to the correct diagnosis. And even though nearly 80 million Americans suffer hair loss there are only 2000 hair surgeons - only 200 of whom are board-certified. So, there's a big gap. In the world of hair time is follicles. When you lose time, you lose follicles because hair loss is chronic and progressive. It gets worse with time without treatment. So it's really important for

those experiencing hair thinning or loss of volume or coverage, to find a board-certified hair restoration physician. You have to find a specialist if you're want to get accurate diagnosis and, consequently, effective treatment. A lot of what we do here is technology driven, but also human resource driven. Each procedure necessitates 20 man-hours of labor for each patient every day. And to have the highest quality people to get these procedures done requires a lot of resources and training. And so that's what goes into a hair transplant.
NOW, TYPICALLY YOU HEAR ABOUT MEN GETTING HAIR TRANSPLANTS OR HAIR RESTORATION SERVICES, BUT HOW OFTEN IS IT WOMEN? Women make up roughly 40% of our practice. In my practice, we've worked very closely with salons and hairstylists for over a decade. It’s important to offer treatments that actually work for women, whether it be medications or redlight therapy or PRP regenerative medicine treatments that are non-surgical. In those early stages, we can really help women. And women's hair loss can look different too. They can have eyebrow loss or eyelash loss or scars from plastic surgery before they have a receding hairline later in life. All of those things may need slightly more invasive procedures. In fact, I have written textbook chapters on eyelash transplantation in all the major textbooks in the world of hair transplant.
WHERE DID YOU GET THIS PASSION FOR ALWAYS LEARNING, INNOVATING AND PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF YOUR INDUSTRY? I think part of it is just being a gadget person. I had a computer from the time I was in grade
school and I loved putting models together whether it was like a Lego or Erector sets. My dad is like that. He's a dentist, but it pains him to call a repair person. Whether he fixes it or not is not really the point. It's just whether he tried. He basically taught me at a very young age how to take apart anything and how to put it together again.
THAT KIND OF SEGUES PERFECTLY INTO THE BIOHACKING. HOW MUCH WOULD YOU SAY THAT HAS ACTUALLY HELPED YOU OVER THE YEARS? I've been a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine for over 20 years. So I've always been around the people who were interested in longevity. Besides wearables that track sleep or glucose levels, or calorie restrictions or water fasts, the best biohack is Vitamin G – gratitude. It's free but I wouldn't say it's easy because you have to think about what you're thankful for.
WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR PRACTICE, WHAT IS THE ONE THING THAT YOU FEEL MOST GRATEFUL FOR? My team, because I know there are many practitioners around the world that would love to be able to provide the services and the skills and, and the procedures that we do. But they have trouble finding and keeping their team members. I’ve been blessed with an amazing team for a very long time. Most of my team members have been with me for over a decade. Whether it's someone that just is compassionate at the first call or visit, making patients feel comfortable, or doing the initial hair measurements. So to the people that help me do procedures and treatments and coordinate the running of the business, I'm very grateful.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings
As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH AFTER BARRE Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SATUR DAY Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.
Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 40
S PA DAY | WEL L N ESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
