Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. In South Florida, it gets particularly hot in the summer, so in this issue we share ways to cool down, unwind, and dress comfortably for the season. I hope you are able to enjoy some of the many things our city offers during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you that you love.

Raising the bar for Boca men’s style

Dapper
The first thing you notice when you enter Raise the Bar is the décor: the distressed wood floors, bold modern art and the bright pops of color sprinkled through the store. But it’s owner Tony Pianta who is the biggest asset, expertly guiding his clients through the eclectic selection of high-end menswear. When Tony Pianta, with his wife Pam, opened the store in July 2021, he saw a need for a store in Boca that fit today’s men: modern, vibrant, and everyday elegant. Tony brings with him a wealth of sartorial knowledge. He has spent the last three decades refining his understanding of men’s style while working at Burdine’s, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus and Guy La Ferrara. Tony has lived, for the most part, in California and Florida, but it was his 14-year stint in Chicago working at Neiman Marcus that proved to be pivotal in learning about seasonal style and luxury merchandise. And he uses this expertise to both outfit a beautifully curated store and to advise each of his clients on exactly what will work for them. Tony is a natural storyteller. His love for people is clearly seen through his personable, witty and hands-on approach. We sat down with him to learn more about his life, his style and top tips for men looking to up their style game. CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BO CA R ATO N

What are your top 5 style tips you have for men who want to dress better? 1. Don’t buy a size, buy the correct fit. 2. Don’t be afraid to wear color. 3. Not all shirts are meant to be worn untucked. Tuck it in and show off that beautiful belt. 4. Invest in a few pairs of quality dress sneakers. 5. Trousers should be flat front, slimmer fitting and have little to no break.
How did you meet your wife, Pam? I met Pam in 2016, shortly after my first wife, Paula, died of pancreatic cancer. Pam lost her husband earlier that same year. We were married the following May. My wife is the inspiration for the store and my business partner. I would not have taken a chance if it were not for her encouragement. Pam is truly beautiful, inside and out. She genuinely cares about being a good and kind person. I know that she has my back, no questions asked. We helped each other through very dark and sad times, and now we have something incredibly special. Our shared loss reminds us to fully appreciate each day as it comes. How did you develop your sense of style? My sense of style has changed so many times. I have always been drawn to vibrant colors, particularly purple and orange. Right now, I’m all about being comfortable yet looking pulled together. Jeans and sneakers are great once the jeans fit properly and the sneakers are not intended for the gym. Always have a soft sport jacket available. What is your favorite thing about running RTB, and what is the most challenging? I love meeting new people daily. I do my best to personally greet every person that walks into my store and get a sense of what they need. I like to encourage my clients to step out of their comfort zone and not shy away from color. The most challenging aspect about running the store is trying to have everything in stock that clients are looking for. I do my best to keep fresh inventory rolling into my shop monthly. I now own nearly three times the volume of inventory that I opened with last summer, and I consistently speak with my vendors to stay abreast of their most important items. Who is your typical customer? Right now, most of my clients are looking to refresh their wardrobe. They are ready to start

going out again and want to look good while feeling comfortable. My best-selling products are anything with a little stretch. What is one thing you think customers should know about your store that they may not be aware of? We also offer made to measure clothing from Paul Betenly, Sartorio and Pal Zileri. What are a few must-have items right now? Saxx underwear, Michael’s swimwear, Desoto shirts, Fradi suit, Mark Chris suede loafer, Bugatchi Ooocotton Florida summers get very hot. How would you advise your clients to dress? Opt for white jeans, lightweight cotton trousers or linen pants. Business is so much more informal now. Sports coat, cotton trousers, performance fabric shirt and a great pocket square. I love no show socks with a great driver. My personal favorite summer outfit is Monfrere white jeans, The Good Man Brand sneakers, and a colorful short sleeve shirt from Bugatchi, Eton or Desoto. What’s your favorite summer activity? It’s always been traveling, which is not really an option right now. I enjoy spending time at the beach with Pam and hanging out with my son as often as we can. Father and son cigar time is very important to both of us. What have you learnt the most serving your clientele in the last year? I have the most wonderful client base! They trust me and know that I will never sell something that is not right for them. I have learned most people just need a little encouragement to step out of their comfort zone.

DECADENT DELIGHT A DAY AT EAU SPA IN PALM BEACH
I’m going to say it right here: I’m a spa aficionado. From my very first experience as a teenager getting a facial with my mother, to sampling the intricacies of resort spas in Jamaica, to exploring the subtleties of heat and steam at the Russian & Turkish Baths on Miami Beach, I’ve done it all. Hot rock therapy, coffee scrubs, chocolate wraps, organic facials. My spa resume is a litany of self-care rituals that have spanned thirty years. A necessary punctuation to a hectic work schedule and a fleeting release from chronic pain.
“Now, at last, on my spa journey, I’ve reached the mountain top. The 42,000 square-foot spa at Eau Palm Beach is the quintessence of everything a spa should be. There are absolutely no corners cut here. Every detail is carefully considered and immaculately executed.” Setting a tealight candle in the bronze wishing well in the circular vestibule prepares your mind for the experience ahead; a quiet reminder to leave your stresses at the door.
ARTICLE BY KEISHA VIRTUE
After donning my plush spa robe and ergonomically fitted spa slippers, I was ushered into an exquisite lounge, airy with whispery curtains, and giving a peek into the SelfCentered Garden, scattered with cabanas, swinging chairs and water features. My husband gifted me a Pause package, which started with a 90-minute aromatherapy hot-stone massage. I was wonderfully surprised by an experience that catered to all five senses, not just touch. I was able to choose the hue of lighting in the room, the spa soundtrack (subtle sounds of piano for me), the scent blend for my aromatherapy oils, and then taste: a straw filled with sweet local honey – the perfect kick-off as I prepared to have the rest of my senses indulged. After my massage, my therapist gently guided me over to the float bed. I’ve never before been on a float bed, and I’m almost hesitant to describe it. The discovery itself is part of the delight. As someone who carries a lot of tension in her body from long hours at a computer, the initial sensation of release and ensuing cocooned weightlessness is simply indescribable. My package ended with a trip to the DIY scrub & polish bar where a mixologist expertly blended my scrub with a combination of salt, eucalyptus, citrus and, at my request, sand! I was invited to test it at the sink, and I did not find it wanting. My spa day was by no means over, however. I sauntered over to the Finnish sauna and

inhaled the curative scent of cedar as the heat continued its work on my muscles. Next up was a dip in the Jacuzzi, letting my limbs float languorously atop the bubbles and taking time to duck under the rain shower pattering lightly from the ceiling. Bliss. I spread my towel to pause and rest on the heated (indeed, no detail is too small) lounge chairs, and then made my way over to the blue-mosaic tiled steam room. Then a trip to the garden, reposing like a jewel in the center of the spa. With my glass of champagne handy, I stretched out on a chaise lounge draped with striped cabana towels and allowed the sun and breeze to kiss my skin. I closed my eyes and listened to songbirds trilling among the trees and the tinkle of running water. Decadence. Delight. I returned inside and once more savored the sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Truly, one can do this all day. I tore myself away, finally, to pick up my daughter. But as I drove down A1A with windows down and moon roof open to the sun, I sighed, refreshed, and like General MacArthur whispered ,“I shall return.”

Water f ront Di n i ng on Atlant ic Ave . There are dozens of restaurants along Delray’s famed Atlantic Avenue, but few command the breathtaking waterfront view of Deck 84. Situated right by the Florida Intercoastal, Deck 84 has been named among the Top 100 Al Fresco Dining Restaurants by OpenTable on multiple occasions. With 150 feet of dock space, diners can arrive by boat and even bring their own fish to be cooked. The sprawling covered patio offers unobstructed views of the water. With a refreshing breeze coming off the Intercoastal, and a Florida-casual vibe, this is a place to linger. Deck 84 offers live music from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm on weekends, so it can get pretty lively. There may be a wait for a table, but there is ample seating at the generous outdoor bar. Burt Rapoport’s dedication to excellent service is evident here. The wait staff are helpful, quick, and knowledgeable. A special hat tip to my waitress, Lisa, who expertly guided me through the array of choices and knew absolutely everything about the menu. Brunch is served on Saturdays and Sundays. The smoked brisket hash is a crowd pleaser. It is slow smoked in house and served with crispy potatoes, caramelized onions, peppers and spinach, then topped with two fried eggs and creamy hollandaise sauce. Another brunch favorite is the caprese avocado toast. While avocado toast seems to be ubiquitous these days, the fresh local burrata and oven-blistered tomatoes coupled with arugula pesto and balsamic reduction all combine to bring this dish to another level. Starters include typical favorites like spinach & artichoke dip and shrimp cocktails, but a highlight is the “Green Goddess” hummus, made with lime and roasted garlic. The vibrant green dip is accompanied by a wonderfully warm and zesty za’atar-spiced pita, quinoa tabouleh and a light, tangy tzatziki. This dish simply bursts with fresh, healthy ingredients and is safe for those with nut allergies.

For those craving something more substantial, the prime deck burger is a winner. The patty is made with a special blend of brisket, sirloin and chuck and assembled with asiago aioli, juicy vine-ripe tomatoes, lettuce and American cheese and topped with crispy onions, fried egg and applewood bacon for added crunch. New to the menu and very popular with diners is the coconut chicken Milanese, served with marinated arugula salad, a sweet corn-tomato relish, pickled onion, toasted coconut, mango-pineapple chutney, and charred lemon. Situated as it is beside the Intercoastal, Deck 84’s menu is naturally replete with a variety of seafood options. The trio of baja fish tacos served blackened, fried or grilled is a solid choice. The tacos are topped with a light cilantro-lime coleslaw, crema, and hot, crisp house-pickled jalapenos and are served with a charred tomato salsa. The truffle fries are a tasty foil for these tacos – perfectly crispy with a subtle hit of umami. This dish pairs well with the Benvolio pinot grigio, which is light with a pleasingly subtle mouthfeel. For those in the mood for something stronger, the deck punch is a good option for fans of rum runners. It is made with Bacardi Pineapple Fusion Rum, orange and pineapple juices, grenadine, and a Bacardi 8 Dark Rum Floater. The Key Lime martini is crafted with Grey Goose Vodka, KeKe Key Lime liqueur and house-made sour mix and is finished with a coconut flake rim. This positively tart martini tastes exactly like key lime pie. There are lots of local IPAs here for tourists and residents who are serious about their craft beers. One to try is Saltwater Screaming Reels IPA, brewed just down the road on Atlantic Avenue. Dog lovers are not only welcome but accommodated with a special chef-prepared doggie menu. Owners and their pups can choose chicken, fish or beef, coupled with brown rice and Greek yogurt. Canine diners are served in their very own doggie bowl.
