Celebrating Men

An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make our lives. This month we are honoring men who work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it. I would like to thank Scott Sonnier and Tony Pianta for their time and energy. Thanks, Tony, for personally styling Scott for our photo shoot. Also, thanks to Amber Clark, Director of Marketing and PR for Max’s Grille and Rapoport’s Restaurant group.

S KIN CA R E | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S
It’s a misconception that men aren’t as concerned about skincare as women. We all want to look good and making sure that we treat our skin well is a big part of taking good care of ourselves. To this end, we consulted with Jillian Frieder of Frieder Dermatology to get expert advice on how men can best take care of their skin. Dr. Frieder is a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in psoriasis and the early detection and treatment of skin cancers. Here are 5 tips Dr. Frieder gives men to improve the condition and appearance of their skin:
1. WEAR SUNSCREEN EVERY DAY Here in South Florida, we have a high degree of UV exposure, so sun protection is vital. Many men think that throwing on a hat or long sleeves is sufficient, but it’s not. Even if you’re just running out to do casual errands, the cumulative sun exposure from just driving in the car and running into a store adds up over time. This puts us at risk for skin cancers as well as photoaging, which leads to wrinkles and skin pigmentation. Wear an SPF of at least 30 daily and reapply every 2-3 hours, especially if you’re physically active. If you are going to be in the water, make sure you’re wearing water-resistant sunscreen. For those who have more sensitive skin, I recommend a physical sunscreen blocker with ingredients like zinc oxide. 2. USE A GENTLE CLEANSER AND MOISTURIZE Lots of guys think it’s ok to just use bar soap, but it is extremely drying. Instead, get a gentle facial cleanser. I really like Cetaphil or Galderma, which are great for sensitive skin types. The best time to moisturize is right out of the shower to lock in maximum moisture. If you have acne-prone or oily skin, look for moisturizers that are non-oily and non-comedogenic – meaning that they do not clog the pores. 3. USE A RAZOR WITH FEWER BLADES A big complaint that I get from men is irritation around the beard from shaving. You can combat this by sticking with a single or double razor blade. Five-blade razors may work better but they can lead to more irritation. Also make sure that you’re shaving with the skin and hair wet. Shave with the direction of the hair growth and use a moisturizing, shaving cream and then a post-shave moisturizer. 4. WATCH FOR SIGNS OF SKIN CANCER This goes hand in hand with being in the sun all the time down here in Florida. In dermatology, we like to refer to the ABCDEs of melanoma: A – Asymmetry: cancerous moles are usually irregular in shape. B – Border: any that are changing, becoming larger or irregular. C – Color: if you start noticing that the moles are getting darker or uneven in color, those are red flags for skin cancer. D – Diameter: the diameter of moles should be smaller than a pencil eraser. E – Evolving: This is a big one. Any moles that are changing or becoming larger or darker should be looked at. U – Ugly duckling: generally, everyone has signature mole pattern. If suddenly you start noticing that you have a mole that just doesn’t look like the rest of your moles, get it checked out. 5. GET ANNUAL SKIN CHECKS You should consult your board-certified dermatologist to have all your moles evaluated. And I think for any adult living down in Florida and other parts of the country that have significant amount of sun exposure, it’s important to get an annual skin check. LOCA L’S CH OICE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Sunday Steak with French Butter SOURCE: FOOD 52, 4 SERVINGS
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •
2 porterhouse steaks, 1 pound each 1 pinch kosher salt 1 stick unsalted butter 1 1/2 tablespoons flat leaf parsley, chopped 1/2 teaspoon garlic, minced 1 teaspoon shallot, minced 1 pinch freshly ground white pepper 1/2 fresh lemon 1 splash high heat oil
DIRECTIONS 1. At least 6 hours, and up to 1 day before you plan to cook the steaks, place them on a cooling rack set over a tray with edges to catch the drips. 2. Season both sides of the steaks with salt. Put them back into the fridge uncovered until an hour before you plan to cook them. 3. Allow the butter to soften at room temperature. Meanwhile place the garlic, shallot, and parsley into a mortar. Using the pestle, crush and pulverize the aromatics until they are mushy. 4. Place the butter into a small mixing bowl and smear it around with a rubber spatula. Add the aromatics, a few drops of lemon juice, a pinch of salt and a few grinds of white pepper. Blend the butter until it is one shade of green with no streaks. 5. You can either refrigerate the butter as is or you can roll it up in parchment pepper,
then foil and twist the ends to form a round log. The foil allows the ends to stay sealed. 6. When you are ready to cook the steaks, season both sides with fresh ground black pepper. Place a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add enough oil to coat the bottom of the pan. When the oil is hot -- you don’t want it too hot, but you want it to start searing right away -- add the steak. Cook the steak on both sides until it is very brown and caramelized. Remove the steak from the pan when it has reached one temperature below where you like. If you want it cooked medium then cook the steak to medium-rare and so on. Remove the steak to a sheet tray. 7. Cook the second steak in the same fashion. Both steaks can be cooked up to an hour in advance and left to sit at room temperature. Do not refrigerate them. 8. In your oven place the top rack so it is about 8 to 10 inches from the broiler. Heat the broiler. 9. Using a filet knife, cut the meat from each side of the bone then slice the meat into smaller bit size pieces. Re-assemble the steaks on the sheet tray. Smear each steak with some softened maitre’d butter then place a small glob on each steak. 10. Place the steaks under the broiler just long enough to melt the butter and heat the steaks through. Serve.

Scott Sonnier – The Educator “THOSE WHO KNOW, DO. THOSE THAT UNDERSTAND, TEACH.” - ARISTOTLE
Scott Sonnier has always been, by nature, a teacher. In his prior experience as a personal trainer, he taught clients not only how to exercise but also educated them on nutrition and proper dieting. Scott took his passion for imparting knowledge and discipline over the body and seamlessly transitioned into educating people on how to gain mastery over their finances. As founder and CEO of Financial Management Services of America (FMSA), Scott is in the business of building and managing wealth. But to this he adds a singular zeal for knowledge: a thorough understanding of his clients and what they need, coupled with the innate skills he has honed to educate and advise others. In addition to his investment advisory role, Scott is a wellknown and highly respected speaker who conducts popular series of financial workshops throughout the year. We sat down with Scott to dig into what he’s passionate about and how he approaches his work.

Can you tell us a little about your family? My wonderful wife Tallie and I have 2 boys, Jacques (17 years old) and Tyler (14 years). Jacques has been swimming for 8 years and competitively for 5 years. Tyler has been riding BMX for 8 years now. We’re an active family and enjoy spending time together. We love to travel, take bike rides, go to the beach; we are always outside doing something. A recent Fortune article stated that nearly two thirds of Americans can’t pass a basic test of financial literacy. What are your thoughts on that? This is one of my soapbox issues. We are vastly undereducated about money, as a society. You can go to 98% of high school students and they don’t know what a stock or a bond is. They don’t know what debt is. They don’t know what equity is, but they all have a credit card or know what a credit card is. People are being taught the wrong way. We’re teaching them to get in debt versus educating them on how to build wealth with multiple streams of income. It’s very unfortunate. How do you teach your own children about finances? With my two sons, we always go through, what is this money for? What’s it buying? They have brokerage accounts that they fund themselves. I don’t give them an allowance, but they do earn money working for me in the business and through small neighborhood jobs. This is how they learn what the value of a dollar is, so that it’s no big surprise when they get out there in the real world. I tell people I deal with two of the greatest taboos in American society, which are death and money. I make sure to talk to my boys about these because it’s important they learn how to invest, what to invest in and what to stay away from.
Is there anything you do to ‘sharpen the saw’, so to speak? I am a part of several study groups and I have a mastermind group of people from different industries, where we share new ideas with each other. I also have a synergistic relationship with my tax attorney where we work together devising strategies to help people. Consistent learning and improvement are critical to long-term success. In this business, we strive to help our clients better achieve their goals. What do you think makes FMSA stand out from other firms? Undoubtedly, it’s service. We’re a boutique operation. We don’t try to market to every person. Our job is to connect with a handful of people per year and really make a difference in their lives. It’s so important to learn about our clients and what makes them tick. Without that knowledge and data, you really can’t help people as much as they think you can. So, it’s important that we get as much information as possible to give them the best advice and recommendations. Overall, what’s your investment philosophy? We’re very much a value-oriented investment firm. I’ve been doing this for 24 years and we follow the Warren Buffet/ Benjamin Graham/ Seth Klarman mentality. We stay away from extreme highflyers that, with any miss on earnings, experience massive fluctuations. Can you discuss your fee structure at all? We’re a fee-based investment advisor. We receive no commissions from any products we provide. Like your CPA or your attorney, we work for you. We have a fiduciary duty to work for the client’s best interest. Can you share the most interesting or funny moment that occurred to you in your career so far? I had a meeting with a client who was in the hospital, and he had a bunch of nurses and his doctor in the room. He and I were going over finance and I said that we don’t have to do this now. But he said, “No, I’ve got nothing else to do. I can’t go anywhere, so this is perfect!”

THE PRO GOLFER’S FITNESS JOURNEY
SCOTT
STALLINGS’
WORKOUT
LIKE MANY IMPRESSIONABLE KIDS WITH GIDDY ENTHUSIASM FOR THEIR FAVORITE SPORT, SCOTT STALLINGS DISCOVERED HIS INTEREST FOR GOLF AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 3.
But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors. Little did he know at the time, however, not just how successful he would become, but also how an unforeseen health compromise would also rock his world, and his cross training, for the better.

FROM 3-YEAR-OLD PUTTER TO ALL-AMERICAN GOLFER: STALLINGS’ BACKGROUND Born in Boston and raised in Oak Ridge, TN, Scott set off on his golf career at the early age of 3 and trained his way through achieving all-state golfer and Dean’s List status in high school. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer. Upon realizing earlier in ‘97 “that Woods wasn’t that much older than him,'' Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best. CONTINUED >

SCOTT’S HEALTH PROBLEMS AND DEVELOPING A NEW WORKOUT
Flash forward to the year 2016: It became a life-changing year he never would have anticipated; one filled with strife as he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete. With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night.

THE WORKOUT BASICS:
STALLINGS’ PRIMARY EQUIPMENT: KETTLEBELLS - Cast iron or cast steel ball with a handle attached to the top; ideal for exercises that combine cardio, strength and flexibility training. BARS AND WEIGHTS - A long iron bar on which weight plates are placed. Weights come in a variety of styles, including weight plates, barbells and dumbbells. DUMBBELLS - Short barbells, usually held in each hand MEDICINE BALLS - Weighted balls roughly the diameter of the shoulders that are used for strength training and rehabilitation
HIS TOP EXERCISES:

take ownership, you take power in that,” Scott says. “The voice within gave me some scary realizations that I always hated the doctor, and that they would tell me something was wrong. tomorrow, and you’ll never look back.” Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed. “You only get one body,” he says. Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life. He still was driven to be one the best PGA Tour players and the best family guy he could be, and he would do all of the discovery, the surgeries, and the daily changes all over again to continue living his best life. “I legitimately have some great people push me and stay around me,” Scott says. Scott has traveled the world over, playing on some of the best courses around, from Augusta National twice, to courses across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the hope to cross the Middle East and more stunning destinations in New Zealand off his global travel list. His next “bucket list” trip? Golfing 36 holes a day across seven courses on Long Island, some of the top in the country all within 20 miles of one another— and you better believe Scott “teed up” a “fitness test” among him and his two buddies to see who would fare the best in the end.
Today, Scott happily shares healthy time with his wife and kids and is leading up The Scott Stallings Kids Play Free Junior Golf Initiative, a partnership with the Tennessee Golf Foundation to bring free junior golf to the Knoxville area. “The mission is simple: Provide Knoxville's youth with unrestricted, free access to the game of golf at multiple facilities, 365 days a year,” he says. Look for Scott Stallings to be the first PGA Tour professional and mainstream athlete to represent NOBULL, a footwear, apparel and accessory brand that aligns perfectly with Scott’s train-hard story.

“I love you so much.” It’s one of Austin’s many remarkable and Instagrammable street murals but is also a love letter from locals and visitors alike who adore this “weird” and wonderful city in the South. The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to GET AWAY!

the must-have margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. It all started with Franklin Barbecue, helmed by Aaron Franklin who was the first pitmaster to win a James Beard award for Best Chef, which was inducted into the American Royal Hall of Fame and was credited for ushering in a new era of food into the city. Austin’s slowcooked, fall-off-the-bone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss. Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th floor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef’s contemporary menu. Perhaps a hidden gem is Austin’s mark on the forefront of the booming food truck scene, a foundation for famed, award-winning chefs getting started before getting the funding to open their own brick and mortars. Whether you indulge in one in a gas station parking lot or parked next to a music venue, you’ll find them all over town, serving up a variety of dishes to be devoured. But first you should start your day with a cup of joe from Jo’s Coffee. Known for its iconic “i love you so much” mural-clad exterior on South Congress Avenue, patrons come for the hot coffee, good food, cold beer and people-watching. The creative menu includes everything from its house blend to its Cowboy Cookie Cold Brew you can pair with a hash brown or local-favorite “migas” taco. As for Austin’s retail and local maker scene, the possibilities are endless and elevated. 2ND Street District boasts a mix of boutiques and shops to get your fashion fix and new home decor. For the gentlemen, embrace the full district experience, shopping League of Rebels, a bespoke experience with tailor made lifestyle wear, or Bonobos, the pioneers of custom fit chinos. Then enjoy a fresh shave from Austin’s premier Finley’s Barber Shop. For the women, shop local and find the perfect gift for yourself or someone you love from Luxe Apothetique, then drape yourself in artisan jewelry from Eliza Page before falling for the modern designs from Blu Dot. Following some retail therapy, head over to Upstairs Circus, a unique concept where DIY meets the bar; pick your project, enjoy a libation, create a masterpiece and be merry. Or shop The Domain district in North Austin, a newer shopping center offering upscale hotels and fantastic restaurants. Shop luxury brands such as Saint Laurent Paris and Gucci and reward yourself with sweet and savory bites from a multitude of eateries. Nearby is the home of the new Austin FC Major League Soccer team, so you can take in a professional soccer match as part of your metropolitan experience, cheering on the club team partially owned by Matthew McConaughy. Even if you’re not a soccer fan, the energy is incredible, and the stadium is a stunner.

Other Austin districts worth checking out include well-known South Congress Avenue. You can stroll boutiques and additional eateries and check out the uniquely converted bungalows that now offer day and nightlife entertainment destinations. While East Austin is a larger neighborhood, the depth of culture here is noteworthy. Six Square is Austin’s premier Black Cultural District near the beautiful grounds of the Texas State Cemetery. And, as one would expect, you’ll find a plethora of great restaurants such as local favorites la Barbecue and Bird Bird Biscuit that was just listed as one of Yelp’s Top 5 restaurants to eat at in America.
