May your holidays be merry and bright! The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love. Happy Holidays!

Holiday Appeti zers BL ACK PEPPER POPOVERS Source: Familystyle Food INGREDIENTS • 2 cups milk • 4 eggs • 4 tablespoons butter, melted • 10 ounces all purpose flour • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives • 1 teaspoon grated fresh lemon zest • 1/2 cup sliced, toasted almonds • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 1 cup pomegranate arils • crackers for serving DIRECTIONS 1. Heat oven to 450 degrees. Lightly coat a 12-cup popover pan or muffin tin with melted butter or oil. 2. Whisk together the milk, eggs and butter in a large bowl until blended. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well. 3. Place the empty pan in the oven to heat for 7 minutes. Carefully remove from the oven and fill the cups evenly with the batter (this is less messy if you transfer batter to a 4 cup liquid measuring cup). 4. Bake for 18 - 20 minutes, then lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees. Continue baking until the popovers are deep golden brown, 15 18 more minutes. 5. Cool briefly in the pan before removing and serving. You can reheat cooled popovers in a 350 degree oven for about 5 minutes

P O M E G R A N AT E JEWELED CHEESEBALL Source: How Sweet Eats Yield: serves about 4 to 6 Total time: 1 hour (mostly down time) INGREDIENTS • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 10 fresh sage leaves • 1 (8-ounce) block cream cheese, softened • 4 ounces mascarpone cheese, softened • 6 ounces freshly grated sharp white cheddar cheese • 1/2 cup sliced, toasted almonds • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 1 cup pomegranate arils • crackers for serving DIRECTIONS 1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add butter. Once it’s sizzling, toss in the sage leaves and cook until crispy - flipping once and cooking about 1 minute per side. Remove the sage leaves and place them on a paper towel to crisp up a bit. Set the butter aside. 2. In the bowl of your electric mixer, combine the cream cheese, mascarpone and cheddar cheese. Beat until combined, then add in the almonds, sage leaves, remaining butter, salt and pepper. Mix on low speed until combined, about 1 minute, scraping down the sides and the bottom if needed. Take the cheese mixture out of the bowl and mold it into a big ball as best you can. Roll it in plastic wrap and place it in the fridge for 30 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, place the arils on a paper towel and pat them completely dry. Let them sit out while the cheese is chilling to remove as much liquid from them as possible. This will keep the cheeseball pretty! 4. After 30 minutes, mold the cheese into more of a smooth ball. Add the arils to a plate or baking sheet and roll the ball through them, using your hands to press arils into all the cracks and crevices. You will need to gently press so the arils adhere to the cheese. At this time, you can serve it immediately or keep it in the fridge until ready to use. If you want to make it ahead of time, you can rolls the ball 1 to 2 days beforehand. I’d wait until

the night before or morning of to add the pomegranate arils, and you may need to let the cheese come to room temp a bit so it’s sticky enough.

PASTRY WR APPED CR ANBERRY BAKED BRIE Source: Half Baked Harvest

INGREDIENTS • Cranberry Sauce • 2 cups fresh cranberries • 1/2 cup orange juice • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 pinch sea salt • Brie • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed • 1 8-12 ounce wheel of brie cheese • 2/3 cup toasted pecans, roughly chopped • 1 egg, beaten • coarse sugar, for sprinkling

DIRECTIONS 1. To make the cranberry sauce: in a medium pot, bring the cranberries, orange juice, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt to a boil over medium heat. Boil 10-15 minutes or until the cranberries burst and the sauce becomes jammy. 2. Preheat the oven to 425° F. 3. Lay the puff pastry flat on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Place the brie in the center of the pastry and remove a little of the rind from the top of the brie. I leave the rind on the bottom and sides intact. Spread the cranberry sauce over top and then sprinkle over the pecans. Fold the corners of the pastry over the brie. Brush the pastry with beaten egg and sprinkle lightly with sugar. 4. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is deep golden brown. 5. EAT and enjoy with your favorite bread or crackers...or just with a spoon.

It all started with a Jerry Lewis Telethon. Instead of slogging around his neighborhood, collecting pennies in a cardboard milk carton, a six-year-old Keith Willard brought the party to his home. He organized a neighborhood event with a swing and bale of hay for other kids, and people would pay a penny to get in. Keith was able to raise a lot of money, and his love for throwing events was born.

BORN TO COORDINATE “I want people to have a good time. I like to see people laugh and smile and have all the feel-goods. Life is hard enough as it is. And if I can make a moment in time where people forget what's happening in the outside world and bond with their fellow human beings, I love that.” Keith continued to hone his skills through high school and college, coordinating football home game celebrations, glamorous proms, breakfasts for the Kiwanis Club, and even mud races and volleyball as part of the Traditions Council of the University of Texas. After college, as a director for a not-for-profit, he specialized in creating experiences that people wanted to buy tickets to. When he moved to South Florida, Keith’s attention to detail and flair for the unexpected helped him make a name for himself and opened up a slew of opportunities. For a Halloween event at what is now Rosie’s Bar & Grill, Keith spent three days building a 6,000-squarefoot, self-supported spider web, after carefully watching how spiders built their own. It was a phenomenal hit, with people coming to take pictures, and landed him a job, creating events for the restaurant. From there, Keith moved on to catering sales manager at Hyatt Pier 66 and then to Director of Catering at Ritz Carlton Bal Harbor. The seed for his own event planning firm germinated when couples considering the Ritz for their wedding asked him to plan their weddings himself. The requests came so often that Keith took the cue and Keith Willard Events was born. Seven years and some 400 weddings later, Keith took time out of his very busy schedule to share some tips for throwing a successful holiday party. “A successful event accomplishes two big things. Firstly, the hosts can look back on the event for years to come and be proud of it. Secondly, guests have a smooth, enjoyable evening. There should be good food and good music. A balance between quiet zones, where people can talk and relax, and loud zones where people can celebrate.”

TIPS ON PLANNING A SMALL HOLIDAY DINNER (10 OR SO PEOPLE) 1. Plan in reverse order. When you’re planning, try to think backwards from the end of the night. The first thing, then, to consider is cleanup. Where does the trash go? Who will be taking care of the cleanup? At the end of the night, hosts will be tired, so they need to arrange for help with clearing up everything. 2. Plan for parking. Make sure the HOA is notified, if necessary, and specify exactly where guests can and cannot park. 3. Stock the restrooms. Empty restrooms of all personal effects to guard against looky-loos. Provide extra supplies: soap, toilet paper, towels and – yes – air spray. Guests should not be embarrassed. 4. Create mood lighting. Drop the brightness of lights in your home by 50%. Lighting outside should not be ignored: use tiki torches or bistro lights to create warmth and illumination. 5. Let your décor shine with a simple trick. Use candlelight and glass to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Arrange candles on your dining table at different levels. The glasses will reflect the warmth of the candlelight and produce a beautiful effect. 6. Be mindful of comfort. Comfortable chairs invite people to linger. A successful dinner is where people remain at the table after dinner, enjoying conversation and company.

7. Choose your guests carefully. If you would not have dinner with them at a restaurant, don’t invite them to your home! 8. Make them welcome. Don’t’ skimp on the budget or on service. The host’s job is to interact with guests and ensure their comfort and enjoyment. If you’re running around trying to take care of everything yourself, you won’t have time for your guests. 9. Ensure a closing time. There must be an end time on the invitation to manage expectations.

TIPS ON THROWING A LARGER HOLIDAY SOIREE AT YOUR HOME All ingredients for small holiday parties should apply to larger functions but there are some additional considerations: 1. Assign a greeter. Have someone greet who knows the guests and can usher them into the party area. 2. Create a welcome “path”. Set up different stations from when guests come through the door until they are in the thick of the festivities. A coat drop-off area. Wine station. Small bite station. Guest introduction to other attendees. 3. Set a schedule. Have a timeline of events and stick to it. Respect people’s time. 4. Provide ample seating. Get high boys and stools so people can eat at a table. Don’t make guests eat from their laps. 5. Spread out the lighting. Have candlelight sprinkled throughout home. Use lamps for warm light. 6. Ensure ongoing clean-up. Hire staff to walk around and clear up trash during the event. 7. Keep it moving. Don’t get stuck in one place too long. Anticipate guests needs and desires. Provide detailed introduction between friends.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR A LARGE CORPORATE EVENT: 1. Allow a plus one. Employees do not want to come to the party alone. 2. Don’t mix business with pleasure. Refrain from showing a PowerPoint presentation during the party. 3. Eschew an open bar. Provide drink tickets, or limit bar to wine, beer and a signature drink, like mojitos. 4. Make it optional. Assure employees that they don’t have to come, so they don’t feel pressured. CONTINUED >

The event planner’s job is to interview the clients and to listen. Make sure you’re working with a reputable planner, and that you get along, because you will be working with them for a long time. Don’t devalue the time, effort and skill it takes to pull off a successful event. My husband has been known to pop into my office to ask how many hours it has been since I’ve been sitting and that maybe I should at least get a glass of water. Hold on, going to do that now.... Clearly, self-care is not natural for me, and that isn’t something to be proud of. I have learned the hard way that self-care is not selfish but critical for a healthy and thriving life. The older I get, the more that I know and believe that putting my best foot forward means taking a step back from productivity for rest. True growth is slow growth.

H OW TO | STY L E + BEAU TY

Since I am one to struggle in the area of self-care, I find it helpful to include rest on my calendar to ensure it happens. My practiced rhythm of rest is taking one hour per day, one day per week and one week per year that is set aside for “nothing” (as in, nothing that I would label productive). When I started practicing this time of rest I was left with feelings of guilt and panic. These are the sure tell signs of a workaholic in detox mode, let me tell you. But practice makes perfect, and I’m happy to say that rest is getting easier for me, and if you struggle with rest as well then I know that it will get easier for you, too. I hope that you join me as we practice the art of self-care by trying these wonderful DIY recipes for putting together an at-home spa to relax and enjoy. Recipes that include Young Living Oils are gifted to us by my gal-pal and oils expert, Theresa Jones. Follow her over @theresamjones1 to watch her highlights as she demonstrates how to assemble and use these recipes. GIFT-GIVING Along with enjoying these DIY treatments yourself, you can also assemble them as gifts for friends! All of these self-care recipes can be made into beautiful gifts for your friends and family to be celebrated and loved. Simply assemble the recipes as directed and place them in wide mouth mason jars with bamboo lids. Include a wooden spoon or scoop, instructions on how to use it and attach with ribbon or twine. And don’t forget that Mother’s Day is on May 9 (hint, hint!).

Lemon Sugar Scrub INGREDIENTS • 1 cup sugar • 1/2 cup avocado or fractionated coconut oil • 20 drops of Lemon essential oil • Juice from one lemon

DIRECTIONS Mix the ingredients in a bowl adding more or less oil until desired consistency is achieved. Store in a glass jar with a lid and use within a few days. To use, gently rub over skin. Rinse with warm water and dry with a towel. Your skin will be left silky smooth! You can place the scrub by the sink to be used on hands after washing or left in the shower to be used as a body scrub (just do not use on face). Detox Foot Soak

Lavender Salt Bath

INGREDIENTS

• 1 cup epsom salts • 1/4 cup dried lavender flowers (optional) • 20 drops of Lavender oil

1/4 cup epsom salts 2 tablespoons baking soda 2 tablespoons salt Rose Petals (optional) 5 drops of essential oil of your choice

DIRECTIONS

DIRECTIONS Mix salts, baking soda and oil combination of your choice. Fill a foot basin large bowl with warm water and add your mix to the water. Gently stir to dissolve ingredients. Sprinkle rose petals on top of water. Soak your feet for 15 minutes or until the water has cooled. This recipe is for a single foot soak, but I like to make larger batches (2 cups epsom salts, 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup salt) to keep it on the counter until ready to use. If you’re making a large batch for later, just make sure to exclude the oils and dried flowers until you’re ready to use the soak.

Combine salt and flowers. When ready to use, add the mix to a full tub of bath water. Lastly, add the oil to your bath before enjoying it. This recipe is for a single bath, but I like to make a larger batch (4 cups epsom salt, 1 cup dried lavender f lowers) to keep it on the counter until ready to use. If you’re making a large batch for later, just make sure to exclude the oils until you’re ready to use. *Warning that if using dried f lowers it will take extra time to clean the bath after wards. Before draining the bathwater, use a skimmer to remove the f lowers and if needed rinse your body in the shower.

Honey Lip Rub INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • 1 tablespoon coconut oil • 1/2 teaspoon local honey

DIRECTIONS Mix all ingredients. For dryer texture add more brown sugar as needed. Gently rub onto lips and rinse with cool water. Use once per week. Keep unused rub in the fridge with a lid.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

The holiday season is a time where we feel very grateful for everything we’ve been given, and we naturally want to share our abundance with others. Here’s a wonderful way to give back as well as to imbue your children with a sense of gratitude, compassion and generosity. Touch a Heart Foundation is conducting its annual Adopta-Family program for the 20th year. The Adopt-A-Family holiday program matches up local families who are struggling during this often stressful time of year, with a sponsor. If you choose to sponsor, you will receive a profile and wish list from your selected family and will provide them with gifts and a holiday meal. All families are chosen by Touch a Heart’s Community Partners - other local nonprofit organizations in South Florida - so that caseworkers can choose families with the greatest needs. You can opt to join up with a friend or co-worker to adopt a family. It's so rewarding to know you are helping children who might otherwise go without any gifts this year. Best of all, you have the opportunity to meet the family you are helping and share the joy.
