The Explore Issue

Making Space for What Matters

We live in an age obsessed with efficiency and productivity—and I’ll admit, I fall into that trap more often than I’d like. I find myself valuing only the things I can measure: how much time something will take, what it will cost, and how much control I’ll have over the outcome. But I’ve come to realize there’s little real fulfillment in living that way.

We have to leave space for exploring. For trying new things. For being beginners—and even for getting lost. It’s in those open-ended, unstructured moments that real connection happens. Friendships form, trust builds, and memories are made.

One recent example: Katt and I went on a yoga retreat (a big leap outside our comfort zones). Neda, the owner of Trinity Wellness, encouraged us to go, even though we hadn’t practiced much yoga recently. We took a chance, and it turned out to be one of the most meaningful experiences we’ve had. We met incredible people, many of whom felt just as unsure as we did at the start. By the end, we had formed bonds that felt like the beginning of lifelong friendships.

In the last few months, I’ve been reflecting on my relationship with Katt— how we spend our time and what brings us joy. We made a simple list of our weekly activities and then split it into three columns: things to keep doing, things to stop doing, and things we want to start. Just this small act of awareness opened up time and energy for what really matters—a meal around the table, a spontaneous board game, or finally trying that new ice cream shop. I encourage you to try this yourself.

Our hope is that this issue inspires you to make room for exploration. To step away from the to-do list. To get lost in a good book, wander a trail, or finally book that trip you’ve been dreaming about. Let’s make time for what matters most—before it gets pushed to the bottom of the calendar again. Honoring Heroes: A Blue Springs Memorial Day Tradition

The Blue Springs Memorial Day Parade, a tradition for nearly 80 years, honored those who gave their lives for our freedom. Stepping off at 9:15 a.m. from 11th and Main, the parade concluded with a memorial service at Blue Springs Cemetery. Along the route, participants paused briefly at Meyers Funeral Chapel, reflecting the community’s dedication to honoring life and those who serve.

HEALING IN CONTRAST

TRU Elements brings wellness to Blue Springs with cold plunge, sauna, and red light therapy

Patty Warren never set out to open a wellness studio. But like many great things in life, TRU Elements was born from a winding road, a little curiosity, and a lot of heart.

Located just off NE Coronado Drive in Blue Springs, TRU Elements offers cold plunge, infrared sauna, and red light

“We could’ve opened anywhere—but we wanted to bring something meaningful to the community we call home.”
– Patty Warren

therapy—treatments rooted in science and gaining traction in the mainstream. But for Patty and her husband, Brandon, this isn’t just a trend. It’s personal.

“I’ve always loved the science behind how the body works,” says Patty, a former nurse who has battled psoriasis since childhood. “During my second pregnancy, I couldn’t take steroids, so my midwife suggested light therapy. That’s when I saw how powerful this could be.”

That experience launched a journey. First came a tanning salon, Image Sun, next door, then years of research into UV, infrared, and red light therapy. But the Warrens wanted something more—a calming, intentional space focused on healing, recovery, and everyday wellness.

“We’re all about accessibility,” Patty says. “Not everyone tans. But everyone can benefit from what

we offer here—young athletes, tired parents, people dealing with chronic pain or just everyday stress.”

A SCIENCE-BACKED RESET

TRU Elements isn’t your average spa. Step inside and you’ll find private rooms equipped with hightech infrared saunas, red light beds, and plunge tubs set to a bracing 55 degrees. Guests can book one service or combine treatments for contrast therapy—starting with heat to open blood vessels, then cooling down to flush toxins and promote recovery. Each service offers unique benefits. “The sauna promotes detox, reduces inflammation, and helps you relax,” Patty explains. “Red light therapy energizes your cells and supports skin health, while the cold plunge is incredible for mood, pain relief, and circulation.”

While the benefits are wide-ranging—better sleep, less stress, more energy—Patty is quick to note that each person’s journey is different. “Some people can only do 30 seconds in the cold plunge at first,” she says with a laugh. “That was me. It took me six weeks just to sit down in it.”

The studio’s atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and clients can come solo or bring a friend— rooms are designed for two. “We see sisters, couples, even groups of teenage athletes,” she says. “I’ve been surprised by how many men come in, especially younger guys who are really dialed into recovery and long-term health.”

WELLNESS WITH HEART

Patty and Brandon are no strangers to the Blue Springs area. They bought their first home here at 19, raised four kids between Blue Springs and Grain Valley, and now run both of their businesses side by side.

“We could’ve opened this anywhere,” Patty says. “But this community means something to us. There’s nothing else like this here, and we wanted to bring something new to our neighbors—something that helps them feel better, naturally.”

They’re not tied to a franchise, either. Every piece of equipment—like their Sunlighten saunas or industry-leading red light bed—was handpicked by Patty after years of research. “I wanted the best, and I wanted it close to home,” she says.

At its core, TRU Elements is a family effort. Their 18-year-old son works alongside them and even designed their logo. “We’ve built something that reflects our values,” Patty says. “It’s about feeling good, taking care of your body, and making wellness something everyone can try.”

MORE THAN A SCHOOL

INSIDE THE COMMUNITY THAT’S CHANGING LIVES ONE STUDENT AT A TIME

For students, parents, and staff alike, Plaza Heights Christian Academy (PHCA) is more than a school—it’s a Christ-centered community where students are challenged to grow intellectually and nurtured spiritually, emotionally, and personally. Recently, voted Kansas City’s Best Private School and Best Preschool of 2025, PHCA is recognized for more than academic excellence; it’s known for changing lives.

At PHCA, education goes beyond textbooks and test scores—it’s about cultivating hearts, shaping character, and building a foundation rooted in faith. Families and faculty describe the school as a place where every student is known, loved, and inspired.

Whether it’s stepping up to lead in chapel, serving others with purpose, or being challenged academically, PHCA is shaping students to make a lasting impact in their families, their communities, and the world around them.

IMPACT THAT LASTS

Students, parents, and staff open up about the impact Plaza Heights Christian Academy has on their lives—inside the classroom and far beyond.

JOSEPHINE: 6th Grade

“As a new student, I’ve become more aware of God’s grace through the kindness teachers and classmates. At Plaza, people genuinely care for you. I’ll never forget when Mrs. Briscoe prayed for me while I was sick—it made me feel truly valued. Being in a Christian environment has helped me build strong friendships and reminds me to glorify God in all I do.”

KINGSTON: 10th Grade

“I love how connected we are as a student body. Smaller classes make it easy to build real relationships. The Student Awakening was unforgettable, and my faith has grown so much since coming to Plaza Heights.”

CALEB: 5th Grade

“What I love most about Plaza Heights is that we get to learn about God at school. I’m especially thankful for teacher like Mrs. Winegart—she’s always patient and encouraging, even when I was struggling with a tough math problem.”

NATE JONES: Parent

“Plaza Heights has been one of the best decisions for our family. Our kids are thriving—academically, socially, and spiritually. We’re grateful to know that what we teach at home is reinforced by teachers who truly care.”

RYLEE: 8th Grade

“The community at Plaza Heights is special. From chapel to lunch with friends, I see God’s blessings every day through the people around me. I rededicated my life to Christ in sixth grade and was baptized in eighth, thanks to the support here. I’ll never forget how Mrs. Gamber welcomed me—her faith changed my walk with God.”

MEAGAN JACKSON: Parent

“What began as a practical choice quickly became much more. From our first tour, we knew PHCA wasn’t just about learning—it’s about discipleship. Our child is growing in confidence and faith, thanks to teachers who model God’s love.”

JOHN MYRICK: 7th - 12th History

“What sets PHCA apart is our mission to help students know Jesus and His love. I integrate faith into every lesson to help students apply God’s truths daily. The student-led Revival showed how students are choosing Christ for themselves.”

RICK AND KATHRYN ADAMS:

Parents

“We chose Plaza Heights for its strong leadership and values. Our son has grown academically and personally, supported by caring staff and friends. This school is more than education—it’s a community where kids truly belong.”

DANNY DYER: 7th - 12th Grade Bible

“I’m inspired by our students’ spiritual hunger. As a Bible teacher, I don’t just share Scripture—I walk alongside them in their faith journeys. I’ve seen them pray for classmates and grow in understanding. Here, students don’t just learn the Bible—they learn to love it.”

KAITLYN JOHNSON: K-12 Theatre, Speech, and Debate

“At PHCA, we don’t just teach—we guide, mentor, and disciple. Whether it’s praying with students, leading Bible studies, or helping a shy child find their voice, we see God at work every day. From hesitant performers stepping into the spotlight to girls planning summer Bible studies, these are the moments that show the heart of our school.”

EMILY GRAY: Parent

“We wanted a place where our daughters could grow in their faith—and Plaza Heights has been a true blessing. They’re thriving and come home excited about what they’re learning. The strong community confirmed we’re right where we should be.”

The travel advisor helping you explore with ease and style

made MEMORIES EASY

Laura Legg has always had a love for traveling the world, but it wasn’t just the breathtaking views or bucket-list destinations that hooked her. It was the planning she put into crafting the perfect vacation. What she found thrilling, others found overwhelming. So she began helping friends and family organize their trips. In 2018, Laura launched Castaway Destinations , a boutique, full-service travel agency based in Blue Springs.

When you meet Laura, you will quickly see how important family is to her. “As a mom of three with a busy household, I understand how valuable time together can be,” Laura shared. This year, with her oldest graduating from high school, Laura has reflected even more on how fleeting these years are and how important it is to take time to build memories with family. “It goes by so fast,” Laura said. “That’s why I love helping families carve out time to travel together—whether it’s a big trip overseas or a beach week with grandparents and grandkids. I want to help people create memories.”

Castaway Destinations specializes in custom, luxury vacations—seamlessly planned and deeply personal. From European escapes and tropical getaways to small ship cruises and family adventures, Laura works with each client to design a unique trip that is as effortless as it is unforgettable.

TRAVELING… AS A FAMILY:

Whether traveling with extended family or little ones, you are sure to experience the best excursions hand-catered to your specific interests, making each family member, even the youngest traveler, feel special. One standout memory for Laura was planning a multigenerational vacation to England, Ireland, and Scotland. “They enjoyed private tours, including a behind-the-scenes visit to the Tower of London, castle exploring in Scotland, and a traditional Irish music night. And you can’t forget a little downtime built into the itinerary so the family can explore at their own pace.”

AS A COUPLE:

Imagine candlelit dinners under the stars, a private yacht sailing along Croatia’s coast, or a curated wine tour through Naxos, Greece—Castaway Destinations partners with authentic properties around the world to create unique experiences tailored to every individual couple. “Romance travel is about creating space to reconnect,” Laura explained. “I listen closely to each couple’s needs and tailor the trip to their relationship, not just their bucket list.”

WITH FRIENDS:

Friend groups often bring a mix of different personalities, energy levels, and interests. Taking each individual into account, Laura creates the perfect itinerary with optional activities to balance those shared experiences with free time. “One special trip I planned was to an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica for a 40th birthday,” Laura said with a smile. “They enjoyed specially arranged excursions including a private catamaran cruise, spa days, and exclusive cabanas—making space for togetherness and independence.”

YOUR NEXT VACATION IS SURE TO BE A LUXURIOUS, ONE-OF-A-KIND TRAVEL EXPERIENCE

“For every trip, I begin with a blank slate,” Laura shared. “I start by listening, then begin planning with care, while adding in thoughtful details that elevate the entire experience.” From flights, hotel stays, private tours, dinner reservations, museum passes, and even airport transfers, Castaway Destinations handles every element with precision and heart.

“No two trips are the same because no two travelers are the same,” Laura explained. “Whether someone wants to feel adventurous, pampered, or deeply connected, I design the experience around their vision and make it effortless. I want my clients to feel truly cared for, from the moment they leave their house until the day they return.”

Don’t let planning your next vacation be ‘one more thing’ on your to-do list. Contact Castaway Destinations today and let Laura create the experience of a lifetime!

ROAD-TRIP READY

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

EXPERT ADVICE FOR A SAFE AND SMOOTH JOURNEY

There’s nothing like a summer road trip with family or friends—full of scenic views, laughs, and new adventures. Before hitting the open road, ensuring your vehicle is road-trip ready is essential for a safe and stress-free journey. Tim Porter, owner of Christian Brothers Automotive in Independence, shares four tips you should do before pulling out of the driveway to help you avoid surprises and keep the focus on fun—from smart packing to basic vehicle checks, a little preparation goes a long way.

CHECK YOUR TIRES

Tires are easy to overlook—until there’s a problem. Before you leave, inspect the tread; if it’s 4/32” or less, consider replacing them. Verify tire pressure by using the guide inside the driver’s door (usually 30-35 psi). Make sure your spare is properly inflated—just in case you need it.

ENSURE CLEAR VISIBILITY

Safe driving starts with clear visibility. Examine your windshield for chips or cracks, replace worn wiper blades, and make sure your headlights are bright and working properly. Good visibility makes spotting other vehicles, pedestrians, and wildlife much easier, especially in lowlight or bad weather conditions.

PACK SMART ESSENTIALS

A well-stocked emergency kit is a road-trip must. Include flares or reflective triangles, basic tools, and a portable jump pack—often easier to use than jumper cables and not reliant on another vehicle. Even if you’re not handy, having tools could make it easier for someone to assist you. Don’t forget helpful extras from home: a first aid kit for minor scrapes and a cooler with snacks and drinks to save time, avoid unnecessary stops, and keep everyone comfortable on the journey.

02 03 04

DON’T RELY SOLELY ON TECHNOLOGY

Having a GPS is great—until you lose signal. In remote areas like national parks, cell service can disappear for miles. Download offline maps beforehand, or bring a paper map as backup. It may seem old-school, but it’s a reliable way to stay on track when tech fails.

Traditions & Local Treasures

My family loves spending time at Centerline Volleyball and browsing the Blue Springs Farmers Market. We also enjoy afternoons at Deanna Rose Farm, shopping at local boutiques, and dining at Marina 27. One of our favorite summer traditions is Lake Lotawana’s Fourth of July fireworks. With so many parks and growing activities, this community offers something special for everyone to enjoy and explore.

From early morning coffee runs to sunset strolls, these local favorites reflect the rhythm of everyday life. It’s not just about where to go—it’s about the moments you create along

the way. Whether you’re discovering a hidden gem or returning to a tried-and-true favorite, these spots remind us why this community is such a special place to call home.

Charming Strolls & Global Bites

My perfect local day starts with biscuits and gravy at Bean Counter Café, followed by fresh finds at Colonial Gardens, and ends with a coastal-style stroll at Sail Boat Cove in Lake Jacomo. I love exploring our town—KC’s blend of charm, culture, and flavor is truly one-of-a-kind. Each summer, I look forward to the Ethnic Food Festival at Swope Park for incredible global cuisine.

Elizabeth Selaya

Peaceful Views & Friendly Faces

I love starting the day with a workout at the community center, coffee from 7 Brew, and a sunrise drive over Lake Jacomo. If you haven’t watched the sunset from the rocky outcropping on Jacomo’s north side, it’s one of my favorite hidden gems. What makes it all even better is the people—this friendly, community-minded area truly makes every day feel special.

Lindsay Perkins

Landmarks & Hidden Beauty

Sometimes it takes a moment to pause and appreciate just how special this area is—even for those who’ve lived here their whole lives. Some of my local favorites include Union Station, Crown Center, and the scenic Love Lock Bridge. They all offer fun, family-friendly experiences and hidden beauty, making them unforgettable spots to explore.

Christina McCord

Countryside Calm & Local Charm

A perfect local day might include brunch at First Watch, shopping along Coronado Drive, and pedicures in Grain Valley. I love the peaceful beauty of Powell Gardens and evenings at Arcadian Moon Winery in Odessa. Between charming communities and scenic spots, Kansas City offers something for everyone seeking comfort and calm.

Faith Mantia

Stylish Stops & Rooftop Views

My perfect KC day starts with breakfast at Ginger Sue’s, poolside relaxation, and a visit to Bar K with our pups. I love shopping at The Lucca Collection and spending evenings at First Fridays in the Crossroads. From rooftops to sushi, KC shines with local flavor, vibrant spirit, and heart—something for everyone to enjoy.
