LIFESTYLE LETTER
Dive into the Unexpected We live in a world that values productivity and efficiency, where every moment seems to be mapped out and planned. I’ll admit, I fall into this mindset sometimes too, thinking that the only worthwhile activities are those that can be measured, calculated and optimized. But the truth is, a life that is too structured is missing something vital — space for exploration. We need room for discovery, for trying new things, for being a beginner. Sometimes, it’s in those unplanned moments where connections are made, memories are created and trust is built. In recent months, I’ve been reflecting on how my family spends our time together. We’ve realized that our happiest moments often come when we step away from screens and routines. Our "adventures" don’t always involve grand trips — they could be as simple as playing a board game on the patio, trying out a new trail or exploring a new part of town to find a quirky little café. This issue is all about giving yourself permission to explore — whether it’s a spontaneous trip, a new hobby or simply making time for those unstructured moments with the people you love. Let’s make space for the unexpected and the unexplored, and remember that it’s often in these moments that the richest connections are formed. Happy exploring!

A local couple’s Key Largo home brings the outdoors in — and the indoors out.
The patio is enveloped by sliding doors that open to the inside, with the kitchen to the right and the living room to the left — multiplying the space for entertaining while creating an easy, breezy flow. “People can sit inside at the kitchen table or island or they can sit by the pool, and all feel like they’re together,” Kasprowicz says. “The goal was to keep it all connected and airy — it was all about keeping the structure but also connected and open.” Although she could not change the footprint due to the canal (glimpsed beyond the trees) restrictions, Kasprowicz raised the infinity pool to the main level. The sofa, she says, “is amazing — it’s made of different pieces that can move around and be rearranged according to the need.” To the right of the pool, a hot tub has an outdoor tv.
“I love creating a connection between the indoors and outdoors when designing a home,” says Armina Kasprowicz, owner and principal designer of Rochester Hills-based Armina Interiors (arminainteriors.com). So when her West Bloomfield client called in a panic about his Florida home being damaged by Hurricane Irma, she flew into gear — literally taking the next flight out to inspect the damage.

This is how she operates — forging friendships with clients who trust she will swoop in with creativity, decisiveness and calm. The family’s beloved home in the Ocean Reef Club on Key Largo had suffered severe smoke and water damage throughout the entire house, sparked by an electrical fire in the basement. “Everything was black,” Kasprowicz says. Although the home didn’t burn, it had to be gutted.
LEFT: The family entertains often, with family, friends and their community — the full wall of doors open to the patio, pool and outdoor kitchen, creating an expansive indoor-outdoor space. The kitchen’s enormous porcelain waterfall island is just one example of Kasprowicz’ ability to unite function with a light, airy vibe. Both the island and the backsplash have a milky opaqueness that adds depth, grounded by the custom white oak cabinets. BELOW, LEFT: A round teak dining table opens to the kitchen, which then opens to the covered patio; dining chairs softened with round inside cushions echo the organic flow. The table is flanked by Phillip Jeffries wallpaper, intended to echo the water theme throughout the home. Kasprowicz wanted to reflect light as much as possible — in details from chandeliers, like this crystal bubbled one, to glass doorknobs. BELOW: Before: The French Provincial home's original kitchen, post fire.
“The client loves to spend winters there,” Kasprowicz says. “They have a beautiful community, a lot of friends — it’s their favorite place. They go boating, the wife loves fishing, they play tennis, golf, yoga. They have a new grandchild who visits. They love the lifestyle. “But it was also an opportunity to update a very traditional home into something lighter and brighter,” she says. Originally in a French Provincial style, the home was purchased with all of its furniture, much of it from France. “We wanted to remove the darkness and heaviness, and open it up, with large windows and making the most of the beautiful views.” Beginning with the living room and kitchen, Kasprowicz leaned toward a modern contemporary feel, bright and airy with light wood tones and accents in blues and emerald greens.

BELOW: Kasprowicz gutted the primary bathroom to completely open it up — a different floor plan, warm wood tones and lots of windows with views of palm trees and bougainvillea. RIGHT: Kasprowicz won the National Coverings Award for Tile and Stone Use for this design: In the second-floor guest bath, she chose a glossy, milky white vanity to float against the stunning turquoise tile floor. “The turquoise keeps the bath looking crisp, which is then reflected in the painting,” Kasprowicz says. BELOW, RIGHT: A detail of the shower’s circle floor tile, from Ann Sacks. “It looks like reflective water, with a beautiful glaze,” Kasprowicz says.
Although the back of the home faced a lovely canal that pours into the Atlantic Ocean, prior to the renovation, there was not a lot of space for the couple to spend time on the patio. “It wasn’t functional,” Kasprowicz says. “There wasn’t even room for lounge chairs, so they didn’t use the space very much.” Because she faced regulations about the distance between the home and the canal, she worked with what she had: She raised the pool from the ground level to a first-level infinity pool, opened up the doors from inside the home and created an outdoor kitchen where there was previously a caged-in (for bug-control) jacuzzi.
“We ended up changing the layout quite a bit, and updated the exterior to give it more dimension,” she says. “In the beginning, the homeowner thought we’d quickly update it in a pretty similar way, with brown tile and original details. He said, ‘Just put it together so we can get back into the house.’ He had no idea that I would change the layout to the point where he would actually love every inch of this house. And now he does,” she says. “It’s such a bright, beautiful and functional home,” Kasprowicz says. “They were beyond happy.”

BIRMINGHAM CITY LIFESTYLE: How did you get started in this industry? KRISTINA RAYKINSTEIN: I hold a BBA and an MBA with a concentration in finance and originally worked in banking for many years, most recently at Comerica Bank. Travel has always been a passion — something I inherited from my father — but I never imagined it would become my career. Years ago, I planned trips for my family, and soon friends began asking me to help with theirs, just for fun. But in late 2014, with my youngest starting kindergarten the following fall, I found myself brainstorming what to do next. Surrounded by friends and fueled by curiosity, the idea of becoming a travel advisor came up — and I ran with it. I bought an e-book on ‘How to Become a Home-Based Travel Agent’ that same night. BCL: Tell us about your company. KR: To name my company, I put together my initials — KVR (pronounced ‘caviar’) — I knew it was meant to be. I threw myself into learning, found a host agency so I could attend in-person training and haven’t looked back. More than a decade later, KVR Travel Group continues to design exceptional journeys for clients around the world. Whether planning a milestone celebration, a family adventure or a multi-country escape, I take care of every detail — hotels, transfers, guides, flights, train tickets and special experiences. My role is to make your travel effortless and unforgettable, so you can focus on making memories. But more than that — I really listen. Every trip I plan is personal. I don’t use preset packages or templates. I create meaningful, one-of-a-kind itineraries that reflect your style and your story. I’m also here for you before, during and after the trip — a real person who knows what’s happening and who genuinely cares. BCL: What do you offer? KR: My travelers don’t board big buses — I focus on private or small-group experiences with elevated service and curated details. Europe is a major niche for me, but truly, the world is my playground. A few recent favorite itineraries include a 40-day journey through Australia; an epic French Polynesia escape; a multigenerational family trip across Scotland staying in castles; and custom African safaris for extended families.

TRAVEL MUSTHAVES: • Noise-canceling headphones (a game-changer for flights) • A lightweight cashmere wrap — works for the plane, chilly restaurants or a glam layer • Packing cubes (I don’t know how I lived without them) • A great crossbody bag that zips (a must!) • An international phone plan — makes life so much easier • Travel-size steamer • A power bank and universal adapter (never forget it!) • I love the app I use for most of my clients (and myself) for the full itinerary, with all the docs attached electronically. Saving this planet one trip at a time! • Airtags! These have been a game changer in tracking your luggage. • And of course — champagne for the room

RAYKINSTEIN’S TOP HIDDEN GEMS
• Naxos, Greece: Skip crowded Santorini and Mykonos. Naxos has charming villages, golden beaches, authentic tavernas and barely any cruise ships. • Umbria, Italy: Tuscany’s quieter (and more soulful) neighbor. Medieval hill towns, truffle hunts and vineyards with zero crowds. • Ischia, Italy: The under-the-radar sister to Capri. Gorgeous thermal spas, lush garden and chic seaside hotels — at a fraction of the price. • The Azores, Portugal: Think Icelandmeets-Hawaii. Volcanoes, waterfalls, whale watching and surreal green cliffs — a paradise for nature lovers. • Lofoten Islands, Norway: Picturepostcard fishing villages, dramatic fjords and midnight sun magic. Great for adventure seekers or photographers. • Menorca, Spain: Quieter and more refined than Ibiza or Mallorca. Turquoise coves, elegant boutique hotels and a strong slow-travel vibe. • Šibenik, Croatia: A coastal gem with Venetian charm, close to Krka waterfalls and great sailing access — without Dubrovnik’s crowds. • Hokkaido, Japan (in summer): While everyone heads to Tokyo and Kyoto, Hokkaido is stunning in the summer — wildflowers, hiking, seafood and cool weather. • Puglia, Italy: Think whitewashed villages, olive groves, cliffside beaches and incredible food — all without the Tuscany price tag. Stay in a masseria and explore from Bari to Ostuni to Lecce.

BCL: Do you have any favorite destinations? KR: I always struggle with this question — I love it all: beaches and mountains, cities and deserts. This world is stunning, and I feel like I’ve only just begun to explore it [see Tips: Raykinstein’s Top Hidden Gems, below]. Some standouts? Visiting Peru — Machu Picchu and exploring Lake Titicaca. Antarctica, Italy (I’ve been 12 times and counting), Kenya and Tanzania. I recently returned from Croatia where I experienced a private yacht charter for island-hopping — and I might just have a new favorite. As of now, I’ve visited 68 countries — and still so many more I want to see. This year, I hope to add at least two new countries and finally check off my last continent. I’m planning a work trip to Morocco in September and a long-awaited family adventure to Australia over the holidays. I truly believe that to be a great travel advisor, you have to love to travel yourself. Nothing replaces the insight and inspiration that comes from firsthand experience. It’s not always easy to work while I’m traveling, but every trip I take helps me design even better journeys for my clients. And that makes it all worth it. RAYKINSTEIN’S PRO TIPS: 1. Don’t Chase Every Landmark — Create Moments Instead You don’t have to ‘do it all’” You’re not collecting checkmarks — you’re collecting memories. Slow down, savor a long lunch, sit at the café where locals linger and give yourself time to fall in love with the place. 2. Book the Private Guide — Always A well-connected local guide will elevate your experience more than any 5-star hotel ever could. They bring places to life, open doors you didn’t know existed and help you feel the heartbeat of a destination in a way no app ever will. 3. Your Time Is Your Most Valuable Currency Flights can be rebooked. Luggage can be replaced. But your time? That’s non-refundable. Don’t waste it on logistics, lineups or mediocre experiences. Let someone who does this for a living handle it. 4. The Best Tables Aren’t on Google They’re held by hotel concierges, unlocked by relationships and reserved weeks in advance. If you want magic — think private terraces in Santorini or hidden wine cellars in Tuscany — ask your advisor. We know people who know people.
5. Leave Room for Magic Not every hour of your itinerary needs to be scheduled. The most unforgettable travel moments are often unplanned: a sunset you didn’t expect, a local festival you stumble upon or a shop owner who invites you in for coffee. Build in time for the magic to find you. 6. Always Upgrade the Transfer It sounds silly — until it isn’t. After a long flight, nothing feels better than being met at the airport by a professional driver with cold water, a clean car and zero stress. You’re worth the ease. 7. Luxury Isn’t Always What You Think Sometimes it’s a private rooftop breakfast, a sunrise over Machu Picchu with no one around or knowing your entire trip is seamlessly handled before you pack a single bag. The Road y l s u o i r u x u L Traveled
ARTICLE BY BIRMINGHAM CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF
Pack the family, the bags, the snacks and the anticipation for the best summer road trip ever, with the 2025 Lincoln Navigator.
Family’s schedules cleared? Check. Road trip destination mapped out? Check. Best car for the job, that will provide luxurious comfort, family unity and pleasure on the road — a sanctuary on wheels? Lincoln of Troy suggests the all-new 2025 Lincoln Navigator. Long live the luxury SUV. At least, that’s what it’s looking like, as families trade up from utilitarian people-movers to something that actually makes the journey as enjoyable as the destination. The whole concept of what a family vehicle should be is changing, and parents are clamoring for transportation that actually enhances their family time.
34
D R IV E R’S N OT E BOOK | TRAVE L
Enter the completely redesigned 2025 Lincoln Navigator, which is turning heads not just for its commanding presence, but for features that sound more like a high-end spa than a vehicle. Picture this: You're three hours into a family road trip. The kids are getting restless and your back is aching. Now imagine hitting a button labeled “Rejuvenate” and watching your SUV transform into a wellness retreat. Ambient lighting shifts to calming hues, your seat begins a gentle massage, soothing scents fill the cabin and the dashboard displays a virtual waterfall or aurora borealis. It sounds like science fiction, but it’s standard in Lincoln’s flagship SUV. “With the 2025 Navigator, Lincoln has redefined what a luxury SUV should be,” says Michael Sabatini, general manager at Lincoln of Troy (lincolnoftroy.com). “This vehicle is bold, connected and truly restorative. We invite you to visit us and experience it for yourself.” The Navigator’s 48-inch panoramic display is perhaps the clearest sign of this shift. Rather than fighting over phone chargers and entertainment, families can seamlessly integrate everyone’s apps, music and streaming services into one central hub — it’s like having a family-room entertainment center that happens to travel at 70 mph. But the real innovation might be in the small details that address actual family-travel pain points. The Lincoln Split Gate, for instance, solves the age-old problem of accessing cargo when you’re parked too close to another car — the lower section drops down like a traditional tailgate while the upper section lifts up like a hatch. Revolutionary? Maybe not. Incredibly practical when you’re trying to grab snacks from the back while your toddler naps in their car seat? Absolutely. Safety technology has evolved beyond basic collision avoidance. Features like Intersection Assist and Turn Signal View use cameras to show you what's in your blind spots and what’s coming from side streets — crucial when you're navigating unfamiliar territory with precious cargo aboard. The design itself represents a departure from the aggressive, truck-like aesthetic many luxury SUVs have embraced. The Navigator’s clean lines and full-width LED light bar project confidence without intimidation — important when you’re pulling up to your childs school or a family gathering. For families considering the jump from their current vehicle, the math is compelling. With seating for up to eight and the option for power-adjustable
second-row captain’s chairs, every passenger gets a firstclass experience. The available Black Label themes — Enlighten and Atmospheric — elevate materials and craftsmanship to levels typically reserved for luxury sedans. The question isn’t whether the 2025 Navigator represents the future of family transportation — it’s whether other manufacturers can keep up. When your daily driver can double as a mobile wellness center, the old rules about what constitutes practical family transportation start to seem pretty outdated. If you're going to spend hours together in a confined space, shouldn’t that space be as comfortable and connected as your living room? The Navigator suggests the answer is a resounding yes. P u re Birmingham Discover the charm of our city, through the eyes of a local Instagram content creator.
ARTICLE BY LYNNE KONSTANTIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY FARRAH LAVIOLETTE
Rivage Day Spa
Farrah Laviolette
By day, Farrah Laviolette, known as Dr. Farrah to her young clients, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist. But in her spare time, the Birmingham resident has combined her passions for photography and the Birmingham community and launched Pure Birmingham (@purebirmingham), an Instagram page dedicated to showcasing, as she says, the “magic of this incredible city.” Below, she gave us a look behind the camera for an opportunity to see what she sees. BIRMINGHAM CITY LIFESTYLE: Tell us about your day job? Farrah Laviolette: I’m a child and adolescent psychiatrist with a particular interest in those living with ADHD as they discover their strengths and unique paths in a world that often misunderstands them. But in my free time — or whenever inspiration strikes — I step behind my camera to capture the essence of the city that I call home.

BCL: How did Pure Birmingham come about? FL: In 2018, I combined my love for photography with my deep connection to Birmingham and launched Pure Birmingham. I wanted to create a space where people could discover, celebrate and connect with the vibrant community around them. For me, Pure Birmingham is more than just a collection of images. It’s my love letter to the streets, culture and people that make Birmingham special. Through my lens, I aim to find beauty in the everyday — whether it’s a historic landmark, a bustling neighborhood, a quiet corner or a vibrant local event. But the heart of it lies in its mission: to bring the community closer, one post at a time. BCL: What makes Pure Birmingham unique? FL: Its authenticity. Every post reflects not only what I see but how I feel about this city. I like to think that every caption is warm, inviting and deeply personal. It’s about sharing stories, celebrating hidden gems and creating meaningful connections. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of building a community of followers looking for inspiration, updates and a sense of belonging. I’ve made countless connections, participated in advocacy events and brought attention to causes close to my heart, from championing children’s rights to supporting local initiatives.
BCL: What do you hope to achieve with it? FL: This is not just a hobby for me — it’s a purpose. It’s about fostering meaningful conversations. Looking ahead, I hope to collaborate with community leaders to amplify the platform’s impact and build something lasting. I strive to create a space where artistry meets advocacy, where photographs spark connection and where the heart of the city is captured for all to see. BCL: What are some of your favorite local spots? FL: It’s hard to choose among so many gems! The Townsend Hotel holds a special place in my heart — their tea service is a classic tradition. Recently, I discovered the tea experience at the Daxton, and it was nothing short of spectacular. For steaks, The Rugby Grille is my go-to. When it comes to local bars, Luxe Bar steals the show. It’s small, intimate and effortlessly charming — a cozy spot frequented by locals and recently reopened after renovations. For coffee, Birmingham Roast is a favorite. The café’s inviting atmosphere pairs perfectly with their exceptional coffee selection. But what I love most are the events that bring the community together. Movies in the Park is a tradition I cherish with my nephews every year. And the Birmingham Art Fair — it’s a true celebration of talent, bringing the city alive with creativity and inspiration.

WORTH THE DRIVE ARTICLE BY LYNNE KONSTANTIN A short 20-plus minute drive from Birmingham lies a hidden gem — and the world is about to take notice. Saint John’s Resort was once a quiet seminary and retreat center. Nestled across 200 lush acres in the charming town of Plymouth, Saint John’s has evolved into a premier destination. And from Aug. 22-24, it will host the 2025 LIV Golf Michigan Team Championship, welcoming golf superstars like Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson.

Unveiling a new 50,000-square-foot event space just in time to greet LIV Golf guests, Saint John’s Resort (saintjohnsresort.com) is positioned to become a major player in the luxury hospitality market. “Hosting the LIV Golf Team Championship marks a defining moment for us,” says Kevin Doyle, Chief Operating Officer of the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation, which owns the resort. “Our transformation into a destination that blends timeless beauty with modern luxury has created an exceptional experience
Head to Saint John’s Resort for a family adventure, a day of golf — or a quick weekend getaway.
where guests can enjoy everything they need without ever leaving the grounds. We look forward to welcoming the world to our resort and building on this exciting momentum.” But long after the crowds disperse and the cameras leave, Saint John’s Resort will continue offering an exceptional escape that few visitors expect to find in Michigan. At the heart of the resort’s transformation is The Cardinal, an 18-hole championship golf course designed by renowned architect Raymond Hearn, just opened in June 2024. With 200 acres of undulating terrain, this course challenges players of all skill levels while showcasing the natural beauty of southeastern Michigan. Seeking a more relaxed round? The Little Cardinal offers a seven-hole par-3 experience, complemented by The Cardinal Putting Course.
LIV GOLF: THE DETAILS LIV Golf burst onto the scene in 2022 with a simple mission: shake up the sport and take it global. Launched with the mission of expanding the sport on a global level, it features 13 teams battling it out across 14 tournaments worldwide, featuring some of the biggest names in the game. LIV also launched The International Series, creating a pathway for rising stars from every corner of the globe to earn their shot at the big leagues. These 10 supercharged tournaments, backed by the Asian Tour, are happening across North and Latin Americas, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Europe, with elevated prize money. Owned and operated by LIV Golf Investments with a mission centered around making holistic and sustainable investments to enhance the global golf ecosystem and unlock the sport’s untapped worldwide potential. The resort’s commitment to luxury extends well beyond golf, starting with three distinctive dining options that cater to every palate: the upscale FIVE Steakhouse for sophisticated dining, The Wine Grotto for intimate tastings and Doyle’s Irish Pub for casual gatherings. With 118 luxurious hotel rooms and 56,000 square feet of meeting space, Saint John’s provides the perfect setting for both leisure travelers and business groups. A stunning backdrop for an all-in-one destination wedding, the resort offers multiple ballroom options and a gazebo garden. Craving a staycation? Tuck into luxuriously plush Egyptian cotton bedding and order an in-room spa treatment, take a dip in the indoor pool and hot tub (or rouse yourself for a quick workout at the fitness center), schedule a golf lesson at the Golf Academy and partake in carefully curated entertainment and events against the backdrop of serene elegance and meticulous design. But what really sets Saint John’s apart isn’t just its amenities — it’s the mission behind them. Owned by the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation, the resort operates under the innovative “Humanitarian Hotels” model, dedicating 100 percent of net profits to educational and humanitarian initiatives. Meaning guests can enjoy world-class hospitality while knowing their stay contributes to meaningful community impact.
The resort’s strategic location offers easy access to the area’s cultural treasures. Downtown Detroit, Ann Arbor and the historic charm of Plymouth and Northville are all within day-trip distance. Saint John’s authentic sophistication is infused with genuine purpose. The secret is out — but there’s still time to be part of the story.

Gear: You don’t have to own a picnic basket to have a picnic. But if you do bring a basket, make sure to have some way to chill your perishables and drinks. Reusable silverware, plastic wine or drink cups, and plates often come with a picnic basket set, but can also be purchased separately. Keeping it elegant, but easy (and cool) is the key!

Accompaniments: A cheese plate with fruit is the perfect start to your picnic fare. As with the cheese, your drink selections should coordinate with the main dish. For salads, pair accoutrements with the dressing in mind. A lemony herb vinaigrette dressing goes well with smooth cheeses and tart beverages such as lemonade, prosecco, or sauvignon blanc.
