LIFESTYLE LETTER
Health & Wellness Issue For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this month’s issue from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life—business, finance, food, home and personal health—it’s not what you do some days that move the needle—it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and crème brûlée every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make; it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days—it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

While we don’t offer “beginner” classes, our instructors will modify moves to make them more suitable for specific skill levels. It isn’t about doing them perfectly but pushing yourself past your comfort level and getting stronger in the process!
Any tips for newcomers? If you’re a new client, you can expect a warm welcome from a studio advisor who will give you a complete tour of our studio. Your instructor will then give you a detailed orientation of the workout and our BODYROK reformers. Do you need to hit rock bottom to book the trip? And do you need to “heal” if you aren’t that broken? These were just some of the questions I asked myself upon arrival for my solo retreat, aka “Soul Adventure,” among the red rocks of Sedona. It was a trip–a timeout–strongly suggested by my inner circle. Burnout, overwhelm, anxiety, and a general feeling of ickiness. Whatever you call it, I had it, and maybe a last-minute sojourn to Sedona would be the magic elixir to fix me. I left Phoenix Sky Harbor and headed north. As usual, I was operating on very little sleep (deadlines!) and just wanted the two-hour drive to end. Then I turned on State Route 179, and the magic began. Locally known as the Red Rock Scenic Byway, this 7.5-mile highway showcases Sedona’s otherworldly burnt red vistas–a landscape that feels like God made a God-sized drip sand castle. I arrived at Ambiente® Sedona, a luxe new “landscape” hotel just off the “Y,” Sedona’s busy main intersection. After being greeted with a glass of bubbles, I’m whisked to my Atrium, one of the property’s 40 elevated glass-shrouded stand-alone structures built above and alongside a flowing creek. Each Atrium is built into the landscape, rising and falling with the rocks. The property is barely visible from the highway, thanks in part to rust-colored rooftops that mimic the surrounding Brins Mesa mountains. The red rocks of Sedona are reflected brilliantly on the bronzed glass of each Atrium. Accommodations at Ambiente® feature enormous Hinoki soaking tubs, wrap-around windows (with dreamy automated blackout curtains that make waking up a glorious experience), a spiral staircase leading to a rooftop observatory with a fire pit, and a perfectly curated complimentary snack and mini bar. My first order of business was a massage at the hotel’s spa, Velvet, where I was asked to pick a ZENTS scent blend to accompany my experience. I chose Sun, a warming blend of vanilla, sandalwood, and amber. My “Ultimate Zen” massage was transportive. I floated back to my Atrium, aware of how the consistent burble of water over rocks gives Ambiente® a feeling of calm. Koi fish swim in pools of water, and hummingbirds–so many hummingbirds–flit about overhead. If my Soul Adventure sessions couldn’t shake me from my funk, I was pretty sure my serene and luxurious accommodations would. CONTINUED >

When we travel alone, we notice synchronicities. As I parked my car outside where my first retreat session would occur, my rental car radio played “Beast of Burden.” I met my practitioner, a Brit with a raspy voice. “You sound like a female Keith Richards,” I say. “I’m friends with his son, actually,” she says. When we travel alone, we are seen for the first time, out of context, by strangers. Strangers who see us clearly without pretext. It’s enlightening. We see possibilities and linkages where, before, we just saw blocks. Ideas come quickly and easily. What might take a year to figure out in one’s everyday environment is resolved in a new landscape. In this way, time expands. I didn’t think I could do the Holotropic Breathwork® session. As someone who has always struggled with the concept of meditation, 75+ minutes of deep, accelerated breathing sounded exhausting and scary. But I did it, and I loved it. The time passed in what felt like 10 minutes–it was a time-bending miracle. I didn’t have to be “good” or “talented;” I just had to breathe.

This same practitioner who coached me through the breathwork gave me a piece of anxiety-soothing wisdom when I asked her where I should go hiking. “All of Sedona is a vortex. You don’t have to go to a special spot and hope to feel something. Just being here is the thing. That’s it.” A medicine woman talked to me about “wild horse medicine.” I can’t tell you precisely what that means, but something curious happened. The next day, I saw a group of Native American artisans selling their wares along State Route 89A headed toward Flagstaff. I pulled over. A huge brown and white ring caught my eye. “That’s Wild Horse Turquoise,” the vendor said. I later looked up the stone. Wild Horse is said to be a calming and soothing stone. It is believed to be a powerful emotional balancer. Wild Horse benefits those under extreme stress and who cannot release control. Wild Horse promotes joy and emotional harmony. The next day, a friend, out of the blue, sent a video clip of The Rolling Stones recording “Wild Horses.” What do these specific synchronicities mean? Who knows. Maybe nothing. I’m sure they happen daily, but we don’t notice if we don’t pay attention. Did Sedona fix my life forever? Definitely not. But maybe it is like the instructor said: “You don’t have to go to a special spot….Just being here is the thing.” While that may be true for vortexes, Ambiente® Sedona proved a special spot with the ability to attune at least this guest to the magic all around us for a few glorious days.

One Sunday night, a young mother of three was preparing to rush to the emergency room with chest pain, a condition she’d never experienced before. The thought of long waits, endless forms, and the potential of racking up thousands of dollars in medical bills weighed on her as heavily as the pain itself. But instead of gearing up for a long night, she made a single call to Dr. Joseph Wu. Within an hour, he was at her front door, medical bag in hand, ready to assess her condition in the comfort of her home—and thankfully, it was not an emergency. In a world where typical medical appointments often feel rushed and impersonal, concierge medicine offers a refreshing alternative. Dr. Wu, who recently transitioned to concierge care after 20 years in traditional internal medicine, has found the shift transformative for both his patients and himself. In his former role, Dr. Wu’s day would begin at 7 a.m. with hospital rounds before a quick transition to the office, where a packed waiting room and numerous messages awaited him. “Each visit was limited to about 15 minutes, including documentation,” he recalls. “Often, I felt like I was just scratching the surface of what my patients really needed.” With a patient roster nearing 3,000, the demands left little room for the compassionate, in-depth care he believed in. As the years progressed, Dr. Wu felt corporate priorities crowding out his ability to practice medicine effectively. “The focus shifted toward financial goals, and we were incentivized in ways that did not directly benefit the patient,” he explains. “Patients
had a hard time even getting through on the phone. That’s when I knew something had to change.” Armed with experience and industry knowledge, Dr. Wu launched Brightmark Health last year. His vision was simple: to create a place where patients feel genuinely valued. The clinic was designed to feel open and welcoming, with large windows allowing natural light to pour in. “We want patients to feel cared for from the moment they walk in.” The change of pace has made a noticeable difference. “Now, I see far fewer patients each day,” he says. “We have time to not only address the immediate health issues, but also discuss lifestyle changes and preventative measures that target the root of the problem.” With more time for every visit, he can listen more, ensuring that patients feel understood and supported. “Everyone who’s joined the practice has been very happy.” For Dr. John Featheringill, an orthopedic surgeon, the personalized care Dr. Wu provides has been invaluable. “I went through a very complicated and serious open heart procedure about 10 weeks ago,” he explains. “There were times when I needed coordination between my surgeon, cardiologist, nephrologist, and hematologist, and Dr. Wu was key in getting that done. I never had to feel like I was bothering him, and I sent and received many texts after hours and on weekends.” One post-surgery experience especially highlighted the difference between concierge and traditional care. “I was having quite a bit of difficulty breathing, and CONTINUED >

even though I’m a doctor, I was anxious and uncertain about what was happening,” Dr. Featheringill recalls. “I phoned Dr. Wu that morning, and he made some suggestions, but I was worse later. He was out of town visiting his mother, but came to my house late that afternoon to check me. After examining me and making an assessment, he phoned my surgeon, and they discussed what to do. I was comforted and reassured that I was going to be okay.” Another patient, Caroline Malatesta, also appreciates the accessibility of Dr. Wu’s care. “It's being able to get care when I actually need it,” she says. She describes the comfort of unrushed visits and being personally greeted the moment she walks into the office. “He has the time to listen to you from start to finish.” The flexibility of concierge medicine has reinvigorated Dr. Wu’s passion for his work. “It’s a more sustainable model,” he explains. “I have a better work-life balance and more energy and time to listen to my patients.” Patients can reach Dr. Wu directly by phone, text, or email—and he even offers house calls when needed. “It’s about making health care more convenient and tailored to the individual,” he says. Cost transparency is another feature that appeals to patients. “Traditionally, people might face unexpected bills weeks after a visit—fees that don't align with their treatment expectations,” Dr. Wu explains. His model offers complete clarity on fees,
often at rates far below typical insurance-billed amounts. “For example, a vitamin D test is only $15, and patients don’t have to battle insurance companies to get it approved,” he says. “More information empowers patients to make their own informed health decisions.” Caroline echoes this sentiment, noting that “full cost transparency” helps her avoid the burden of spiraling healthcare expenses. She values how the thoroughness of concierge care reduces the likelihood of misdiagnoses and costly follow-ups. “It’s brought the common sense back to medicine,” she says. For Dr. Wu, the ability to offer personalized service is essential. Patients receive prompt follow-ups, regular check-ins, and even the occasional house call. This dedicated approach has not only built trust but also prevented unnecessary ER visits, easing both patient stress and financial burdens. “You’re not just paying for a one-time visit,” Dr. Wu says. “You’re building a relationship with a physician who knows your history and can guide you through each health challenge as you age.” As health care evolves, concierge medicine offers a compelling option for patients seeking a more individualized experience with a strong emphasis on human connection. “At the end of the day, it’s about trust, time, and care,” Dr. Wu says. “That’s what patients really want, and now, I can give it to them.”

Simple Steps to Maximize Men’s Health ARTICLE BY BLAIR MOORE PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMBRE AMARI
Every man has a personal reason that drives him to prioritize his health. Whether it’s the desire to be a better partner, the need for energy to keep up with young kids, or the goal of reclaiming vitality with age, identifying this “why” is essential for making meaningful life changes—ones that affect not only physical health but overall well-being.

“MY INITIAL RESULTS SHOWED ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT, AND I SIGNED UP ON THE SPOT.”
More and more men are discovering that lasting health improvements don’t require a complete lifestyle overhaul. Instead, they often stem from micro habits—small, consistent actions that are easy to implement and maintain. Gameday Men’s Health in Vestavia Hills is at the forefront of this approach, offering tailored solutions for men of all ages who want to live life at their healthiest. Gameday isn’t your typical medical office. Leather chairs face TVs tuned to ESPN, the walls feature sports murals, and a sense of camaraderie fills the space. It’s designed to be a place where men can relax and discuss their health openly, supported by a team that understands their needs. “Men's health hasn’t been a large focus in our culture for a long time, so we aim to provide education and shine a light on men’s health,” says clinic owner Athens McLaughlin. At Gameday Men’s Health, patients range from 24 to 74 years old. Each first visit includes testosterone testing to assess baseline levels. “The reason all men should come in, regardless of age, is that testosterone levels will inevitably decline,” explains Athens. “It’s a medical fact that typically around age 30—or sometimes even earlier—testosterone begins to drop.” For some, this decline feels sudden, like “falling off a cliff,” while it’s more gradual for others. “Either way, you won’t know where you stand until you get tested and have someone to talk to about it.” For Greg Mihaly, a father of two young sons and a business owner, Gameday has been a game-changer. “There isn’t a lot of free time or sleep in my life, so when I heard what Gameday could offer, I had to check it out,” he says. “My initial results showed room for improvement, and I signed up on the spot.” Weekly visits have become his path to restoring his energy and health. “I don’t have more time in my day, but I just feel better,” he adds. “MY WIFE AND I STARTED PLAYING TENNIS AS PART OF MY LIFESTYLE CHANGES, AND IT’S BEEN GREAT. WE GET OUT ON THE COURT, ENJOY QUALITY TIME, AND LEARN SOMETHING NEW TOGETHER.” Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a cornerstone of Gameday’s approach, but it’s not a one-size-fitsall solution. The team at Gameday customizes a holistic plan for each patient, aimed at helping them reach optimal health. Each plan includes diet recommendations from a licensed nutritionist and practical tips for increasing fitness. For some, this means simply incorporating more movement into their daily routines. “One thing we tell fathers is to take their kids to the park and play,” Athens says. “Just 45 minutes outdoors can make a big difference, and the kids love it.” He also suggests walking a dog. “If you have a dog, take it for a walk. Dogs never refuse a walk!” For those with a partner, Athens encourages activities together, like trying a new sport. “My wife and I started playing tennis as part of my lifestyle changes, and it’s been great. We get out on the court, enjoy quality time, and learn something new together.” Since adopting these changes, Athens has lost 26 pounds, and his wife, who joined him in making these lifestyle changes, has lost 8 pounds without following any specific diet plan. “It’s all about small, sustainable changes,” he emphasizes. As the excitement of New Year’s resolutions fades, having accountability becomes crucial. “It’s easy to fall off track by February without a support system,” Athens says. “The great thing about our practice is that we see our patients regularly for weekly injections, and during those visits, we remind them of the goals they set when they first came in.” This regular check-in helps reignite their motivation. “If someone starts slipping or losing confidence, we’re here to lift them up and remind them why they started this journey in the first place.” With a supportive team behind them, patients at Gameday gain the confidence and consistency they need to reach their health goals and enjoy better health for years to come.

“If I can get people to taste the food, that’s the key to encouraging a plant-based lifestyle.”
In 2011, Kim McNair Brock encountered a fork in the road when she took a hiatus as owner of Bitty’s Back Porch to care for her family. One afternoon, she experienced a conversation that cleared the path ahead: a nurse practitioner took interest in her culinary skills and passion for wellness, suggesting Kim become a certified holistic health coach. The idea felt like a seamless fit. “She was asking so many questions, I thought she was just getting into my business,” Kim laughs. “Then, I realized that she cared. Our visit lasted almost an hour!” Soon after completing the certification, Kim found herself with the opportunity to become a vendor at the Pizitz Food Hall. For six months, she revised and perfected her culinary brand at Pizitz, changing names from Bitty’s Back Porch to Bitty’s Living Kitchen. “People would check us out because they’d seen me on the news – no one really wanted a salad,” she chuckles. “But every time someone got their meal and sat down to eat, they would say, ‘This is the best salad I’ve ever had!’” Though the contract at the Pizitz was for six months, the reimagined Bitty’s Living Kitchen was able to pivot. As Kim questioned what to do next, someone on Facebook inquired about prepared meals, then another woman confessed she “hated to cook” and would appreciate the option. “We started meal prepping, and we’ve done it every year since 2018,” Kim says. At the time, Kim’s parents, as well as her dog – a beloved corgi husky mix named Banjo – were her “guinea pigs” for perfecting recipes, and everyone’s lives changed for the better. Kim’s mother, who was heading toward stage six of Alzheimer’s
disease when her daughter moved in, had improved to stage two at the time of her passing in 2022. Banjo, too, lived a better life following a cancer diagnosis, thanks to Kim’s dedication to his health. “I would fix him salmon, chickpeas, roasted sweet potatoes, and some nutritional yeast – and he loved it,” she says. Even her sister, initially a skeptic, had to concede that Kim’s way of looking at food seemed to work. “Lisa eats everything, and she’d have these horrible pains in her ankles because she loved cured meats,” Kim says. “She didn’t believe what I would tell her about food until she stopped eating the meat, and the pain would go away. Now, she believes it!” Kim’s next venture is a brick-and-mortar business, opening in early spring. Part production hub for Bitty’s Living Kitchen and part healing space, the new spot will offer beloved grab-and-go meals and fresh juices, as well as opportunities to learn more about holistic health through infrared therapy, consultations, and plantbased recipe tastings. “I might put together a few dishes with plant-based cheeses, for example, so people can taste them,” Kim says. “So, different nights might have various themes. If I can get people to taste the food, that’s the key to encouraging a plant-based lifestyle.” When she isn’t working on her new space, Kim changes perceptions of food through speaking events and retreats in locations such as New Water Farms. “I tell people about my journey, and I prepare a meal in front of them,” she says. “And it’s interesting – they always say things like, ‘I never eat red bell peppers.’ Then they’re surprised when they love it.”

TA K I NG C H A RGE OF YOU R S l e e p i n 2 02 5 It’s happening again! You felt exhausted all day and were determined to get in bed by 10 p.m. Unfortunately, the minute you got into bed, your brain decided it was time to review your entire to-do list, worry about the rude comment your boss made, and contemplate that embarrassing thing you did in 3rd grade. You finally drift off after an hour but wake again at 3 a.m. You know you will be tired tomorrow…yawning through meetings, having difficulty focusing, feeling sleepy as you drive, tamping down your irritation with others, and dozing off on the couch after dinner, only to be wide awake at bedtime. You stay in bed and try to force your body to sleep, but you just get more and more frustrated. The worst part? You know you will probably face the same scenario again tomorrow night. How can you break this cycle? With around 30% of Americans meeting clinical criteria for insomnia, you certainly aren’t alone if you experience nights like the one described above. Insomnia is officially defined as trouble falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, or waking earlier than desired at least three nights per week for at least three months. Many who experience insomnia are prescribed various sleep medications, as these are relatively accessible at most medical offices. Medications can sometimes be helpful for short-term insomnia that is related to stress, but these medications come with a host of side effects, such as daytime grogginess and increased fall risk, as well as unusual and dangerous behaviors during sleep,

such as cooking food, impulsive internet shopping, or driving. Additionally, any gains in sleep are usually not maintained once the medication is stopped. The good news is that mental and behavioral health professionals specializing in sleep disorders can help! Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a medication-free behavioral treatment that is highly effective in resolving insomnia symptoms permanently. CBT-I has existed for about 35 years but has only become readily accessible in Alabama in the past several years. It is a brief treatment, usually requiring only six sessions for significant improvement. Research shows it is effective for a range of ages, from children to older adults, and can be delivered individually or in small groups. It has also been shown to be equally effective in traditional in-person sessions or via video telehealth. Participants learn to relax the body, quiet the mind, and associate the bed with sleep rather than wakefulness and frustration. They also learn to set a consistent sleep schedule. Participants generally report that their sleep quality improves rapidly with CBT-I, and the total amount of sleep per night increases as they continue practicing their new skills. Good sleep is crucial for your physical and mental health. Poor sleep is associated with a wide array of health problems, including obesity, cardiac disease, anxiety, and dementia. You don’t have to live with insomnia. Let good sleep be your New Year’s resolution this year. Commit now, and you could be sleeping well by spring!

NO RISK, NO REWARD
A MEASURED APPROACH TO FINANCIAL RISK ENHANCES YOUR INVESTMENTS

REWARD In the investing world, risk holds two meanings: uncertainty and loss coupled with opportunity and growth. When working with clients, I have a framework to ensure we’re taking an appropriate level of risk. We start with an advanced plan that outlines someone’s values and goals. Next, we gather quantitative inputs. This might be information about lifestyle costs, vision for retirement lifestyle, timing for retirement, and what gifts to charity or family are to be made during life or as a bequest. Once we have a picture of what the current lifestyle looks like and what the future hopefully holds, we can answer three important questions. 1. HOW MUCH RISK DO YOU NEED TO TAKE? Taking some level of investment risk is often necessary to reach your goals. For those who are more riskaverse, it’s important to know certain risks can hedge against other risks, like inflation being higher than expected or the risk of outliving your nest egg. On the flip side, maybe you have reached your financial goals and no longer need to take the level of risk that you took earlier in your career. Remember the important adage, “never risk more than you can afford to lose.” 2. HOW MUCH RISK ARE YOU ABLE TO TAKE? The ability to take risk has to do with several factors, including how long until you need to access the funds and your lifestyle costs. Stock markets can be volatile and can take a long time to recover in a recession. Could you adjust your lifestyle or continue working if we encounter another large loss in the stock market? Investors who can weather the ups and downs without drawing money from a portfolio will have a better outcome.
“Never risk more than you can afford to lose.”
3. HOW MUCH RISK ARE YOU WILLING TO TAKE? This last question relates to your mental threshold and can trump the other two. Is there a level of loss in your portfolio that would keep you from sleeping at night? Or a level that would cause you to panic and sell your investment holdings? We don’t want to cross that threshold. Often, after we work through the first two questions, the third is easier to answer. So, how much risk are you taking now in your portfolio? The first big indicator is the percentage of stocks (high risk, high potential reward) vs. the percentage of bonds (low risk, low potential reward). Other elements of your portfolio that can bring in additional risk are having a concentrated holding, using debt to buy investments, investing in a holding that uses debt (or leverage), or making frequent trades based on trying to predict the direction of the market. Whether the word risk makes you nervous or excited, make sure that your investments match your plan.
